It easily had the best coffee I drank in Boston and the only shop in the city I thought measured up to the top coffee shops around the country. The microfoam and latte art were perfect. There was a hint of bitterness at the top of the drink but the beans were basically extracted flawlessly (the sweetness and not the bitterness flavor of the beans). The latte was rich and smooth throughout the entire drink. Gracenote is a cute, boutique shop in Chinatown. There was limited seating. Accordingly, it has great coffee but may not be the best place to sit and hang around. Short and sweet, the visit and the service. This city coffee shop is tucked-in a block off one of the main streets. It's a smaller shop, yet still makes room to sell pastries like muffins and scones, and they even had retail items like cups and coffee brewing needs. We both had a nitro cold brew to go. I absolutely adore Gracenote Coffee! It's a quaint, grab-and-go type of coffee shop located near Chinatown Boston. I was in town for a business conference and decided to stop by for a cup of morning coffee...did not regret it one bit! It's a very small shop with no seating area, just standing tables on the side, so it's more appealing to the early work crowd. The shop itself has the perfect aesthetics, with a vibe mixed with a historical library and a trendy coffee shop. They roast their own beans, and the quality is great! However, they do have just limited selection of pastries/food items...but that's alright because that's not their specialty. This review is for the Cardamom latte only. I typically get Cortados or cappuccinos in most places because they have less milk than a latte. The cardamom latte I got today was in a to go cup because there's no indoor seating right now at this location. This cup was probably your standard size to go coffee cup for a latte. That said, I feel as though to go cups often are larger than a cup you would get if you had the drink "for here"- so you might end up with a drink with more milk in a to go cup to fill that remaining cup volume. My cardamom latte had a lot more milk that what I would prefer. Also, the overall flavor profile of the drink was kind of weak and I think that is where this latte really fell short. It needs a bolder kick in terms of taste. I'd like to see this cardamom offering in a cappuccino or something with a lot less milk than a latte. I have been here once before and ordered something completely different. That experience was good. I'll try these guys again. read more

I travel a lot and ask people for recommendations. This was one of them. I walked from Arlington St in pouring rain just to try it and was met with two people who looked bored when I walked in but still somehow seemed bothered by me being there. I asked about what they were brewing that day, because that's a reasonable question to ask at a coffee shop who switch espresso and/or pour overs periodically. Their answer was that they have a pretty standard coffee menu. I got an espresso and it was fine. Not bad, not great. I asked about beans and they really were not very helpful, but I bought a bag of beans to try out at home, anyways. I just finished off the bag and they kept pretty well over time, as the bags are resealable. Their prices are okay, but not great compared to the quality. There are plenty of local places to support around Boston but I just can't say this is one of them. read more

I have not left a Yelp review in years, but have broken my silence for Gracenote. Gracenote is a coffee shop for people who actually love COFFEE, not just milk and sugar. They not only make some of the best drinks you can get in Boston, but also the most consistent. There are plenty of shops where you can get decent drinks, but then you return on another day and there's a different barista on shift and the drink is disappointing. Gracenote has never failed me in the four years I've been patronizing the business. Consistency requires high standards for everything: roasting, ingredients, cleanliness, and above all else, training. Most shops never achieve this. And I've been to many and worked in many. Gracenote is pure craftsmanship. It's true that they are a little more expensive than the average coffee shop, but what you get in return is that guarantee that your drink will be good every time. And they don't have seating or wifi and they don't have coffee-themed blended milkshakes with ten ounces of syrup and whip cream. If you're traveling to Boston and want to hit a few good shops, this should be at the top of your list. It's a few blocks from South Station and well worth the stopover. If you're not a coffee snob like me, I still recommend the place. Just don't approach it like a Starbucks or Nero or even Tatte. This is a different type of business that makes a different class of product. The people you order from are the ones making your drinks and they know what they're doing. Talk to them and give them a chance to impress you. Once you're hooked, Dunkies and Starbucks will seem bland by comparison. Very nice spot if you are looking for a quick stop for coffee and a snack. There are no sitting tables - only standing tables where they offer hooks to put down your stuff. I really enjoyed my time here and was very calming. I ordered their oats and cranberry cookie and an iced matcha. That was one of the best tasting cookies I've ever had and will come back for it. I went with two of my friends to Boston this past Monday and we decided to stop in this tiny coffee shop in the middle of Chinatown. The only downside of Gracenote is there is not much seating. There is a bar-style table along the left window, but few stools. But that is hardly noticeable when you're taken in by the minimalistic/hipster décor and the absolutely delicious coffee! I took a leap of faith and trusted the barista's recommendation of the Cardamom Latte and I was definitely not disappointed! It was delicious! As others mentioned, Gracenote are truly expert coffee makers. Recommend going for the drip coffee of the day, and standing up and drinking while enjoying the bustle of Boston outside. The coffee here is pretty standard. I am not sure why this place has such a high rating. There is not enough seating or space for that matter. When I was here, I had to awkwardly stand by the trash can and condiments area because all of the seats were taken up. By the time a seat open, there were a few people waiting for the same spot, so whoever was closest to the empty seat got a spot. And here I was, stuck in the same spot again. It's like playing musical chair, except there isn't any space for you to move around. The latte I got here was pretty standard. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here for coffee though. There are better coffee shops in the area. But if you just need to grab some coffee, you can give this place a try. You definitely can't enjoy your coffee inside the shop. I miss coffee. I really, really do. I've now resorted to having tea in the mornings. Acid reflux has a vendetta against my obsession with coffee and cold brews. But my husband has a Bialetti and makes coffee every weekend for himself, so I decided to pop in and grab some coffee for him. Gracenote was closed for the day, but I was able to snag a bag of espresso coffee beans. San and his team were super awesome, and offered to grind the beans for me. I was asked how it was brewed, and I said that we have a Bialetti (mispronounced this horribly haha - I work at Sur La Table and I've heard Bialetti pronounced by customers as "Bee-a-letti" as opposed to "Bi-a-letti" - oh well), and my coffee beans were grinded to Bialetti settings. Conveniently located near South Station T and Chinatown, came here for a hot bev. Tried their new Chai Tea Latte (hard choice between this and their also new Cardamom Latte), as well as had a drip coffee. Their chai was good - the full fat milk was definitely steamed and frothed well. The chai flavor pulled through, but not well enough for 5 stars. Also thought it was a little sweet? I didn't notice, but the sweetness makes me think they haven't exactly perfected the balance between their chai concentrate and milk volumes. Drip coffee was super interesting. I had a light roast. When it was super hot, I didn't think it was good/had any complex citrus flavors I expect from a light roast. Give it 5-10 minutes to cool down, and the flavors really blossomed! In the end, I love Gracenote for their baristas (knowledgeable and friendly!), but are there drinks worth the price / would I consistently pick Gracenote over all the great coffee shops in Boston? I got an iced latte and while it was decent, it became more bitter as I drank it. I noticed there were coffee grounds at the bottom of my cup... not sure if that's why it tasted off and bitter?
