I have trained jiujitsu a little over 5 years.  I have been training at Gracie Barra Bothell for more than a year now.  I have trained in Martial Arts both on the East and West coasts of the US in various styles including karate, aikido, krav maga, and Brazilian jiujitsu.  Gracie Barra Bothell is one of the best locations I have ever trained at!  Your first day at any new gym or dojo can seem scary.  However, Gracie Barra Bothell has a very welcoming/down to earth atmosphere.  Professor Rocky and Professor Melvin will welcome you with open arms!  You will feel apart of the Gracie Barra Bothell Family from your very first class.  In addition to being a comfortable place to train, you will be taught by instructors who are among the best in the north west. Professor Melvin is one of the highest ranked Brazilian Jiujitsu instructors in the North West.   In some ways, he reminds me of my high school trigonometry teacher.  My high school trigonometry teacher once told me to do well in his class, I either need to memorize all the formulas for the test or I need to understand how a few of the formulas work so that I can derive all the other formulas on my own.  Professor Melvin has an engineering background and therefore approaches Jiujitsu from an engineering perspective.  You will not hear him say "Just copy what I do."  He doesn't just show you what to do.  He explains the mechanics and the "Why" behind what you do.  He also encourages his students to ask questions.  As a software engineer, I find his teaching methodology to be very helpful. Professor Rocky trains my oldest Daughter, who is six years old, in the kid's jiujitsu class.  I have been impressed by the way he engages the kids in his classes.  In the future, I plan on having him train my youngest Daughter, who is currently three years old, as well.  Professor Rocky is amazing with Kids!  I trained martial arts growing up and I can say that martial arts would have been way more fun to learn had Professor Rocky been my teacher!  He just gets kids.  He understands how to keep the kids engaged by having fun while teaching them fundamental jiujitsu techniques that will pay dividends in their jiujitsu journey.  As an Adult who trains Jiujitsu, I also learn a lot from the kids classes!  Professor Rocky ingrains the fundamentals and adapts the techniques so that they can be efficiently internalized and absorbed by the kids.  In addition to being very knowledgeable about Jiujitsu, Professor Rocky spends a lot of time reading books on how to be a more effective teacher and communicator.  If your Child attends the kids jiujitsu class, they won't just learn jiujitsu.  They will learn key life skills like not giving up when things get hard or uncomfortable.  They will also learn to be more confident while at the same time taking care of their teammates.  To increase their confidence, the kids are given opportunities to lead in class.  This can involve leading an exercise or teaching a technique that they have learned.  Gracie Barra Bothell kids are taught that there are winners and learners.  You only lose if you don't learn. Let's be real. It's intimidating for a child/youth to walk into a place where things don't go the way they want it to. That's reality and that's why we signed up our 9 year old girl. It took us months to reach out the Gracie Barra Bothell because our daughter is the sweetest, most fair, kind, never hurt a fly kind of girl. She's tough and her passion is riding 1,000 lb horses going as fast as possible since she was 3. Barrel racer. Although that's what she loves, this place has taught her strength, hard work and consistency. They teach the kids to keep on going even in bitter days. The coaches are fantastic. All so great in their own way! Coach Melvin gets you going! Never give up even if it's rough. You got it kind of attitude. Coach Rocky does the same and is a wonderful with the kids. All the coaches give that drive that they need. The "you can conquer what you're doing if you just try and give it all you got!" The kids all work together and help each other out. Overall, I was hesitant about this place prior to joining as so many parents are but so glad we stuck to it. Our daughter is strong mentally, physically and emotionally. Ps. Every time I see classes at Gracie Barra Bothell they are professional, organized, and everyone is working hard and learning. The best training for learning self defense for all ages. I have two children ages 8 and 9 and they come twice a week for lessons. Very professional and kid friendly for children who have never done any type of actual sports activities before now. It's also great exercise. They are learning discipline and getting a routine as well as learning how to be able to defend themselves in the event of being bullied or attacked. It's a must take class. read more

The Barrafit program is a great workout and Jason is willing to move the intensity up or down depending on your fitness level or if you are injured.
