I greatly enjoyed my time studying at Gracie Barra Kirkland. This was my first Jiu-Jitsu gym and I couldn't have been more satisfied starting here. Professor Josh, Coach Garrick, Coach Solange, and other training partners learning there were welcoming, friendly, and extremely helpful with learning techniques. I mostly took gi classes and was very satisfied with the quality of instruction. They were extremely patient with someone who didn't know a thing about grappling. There is alot great about this gym: 1. The instruction is fantastic - Josh and Solange bring a ton of competitive and thoughtful experience to the mat. Because of their athleticism and knowledge of grappling, their students get great information to help them form and improve their game. 2. The team is great - Simply put, this is a nice group of folks to roll with and that is exactly what you want in a club. 3. They encourage their students to be their best but still respect that everyone is in their own place. This is a rare trait in coaches and professors who often push people beyond their own limits for the sake of the club. I really like GB Kirkland. I have been training at the Kirkland Gracie Barra, and GB Seattle, for the past 3 years and have loved my experience there. The training is second to none and the competition level is as difficult as you're interested in making it. My wife, daughter, and son also train in the classes with Professor Cindy, and are proud to have someone so renowned teaching us. The vibe is extremely inclusive, so if you are brand new to a martial art, jiu jitsu, or experienced you will be welcomed. Safety is emphasized and this is important for me and my family. Even though I was signed up at a different Gracie Barra school, they allow you to attend classes at different locations. I would regularly attend the Nogi class on saturdays at the Kirkland Gracie Barra. They always make me feel super welcome there even though I'm not a full time student at their location. Cindy is a top notch martial arts instructor. Not only is she a genius at Jiu Jitsu, but a very accomplished MMA fighter as well. More importantly she and Dave the other instructor do a really amazing job at explaining things for beginners. They'll demonstrate the techniques over and over and over again until everyone has a clear idea how to do it. The other students are all very friendly and supportive as well. My only complaint which is due to what I've experienced at both of the Gracie Barra locations I've trained at is that many of the advanced students are often way too aggressive and competitive with the beginner students. I don't mind "losing" or being tapped out by more advanced students, but I do mind them being so aggressive about it that I never get the opportunity to try any of the techniques I've learned, or feeling like I'm going to sustain a serious injury. I believe I learn better when I'm paired off with students around my level or 1 or 2 steps ahead of me. read more

I've been doing Jui Jitsu off and on for 5 years, I've received plenty of injures. I suffered an inguinal hernia during training back in early December of 2015. I had to beg "Dave" not to charge me for the time off to recover. "Dave" was very business like about everything and didn't bother checking up on me during my recovery time. It felt like a slap in the face!!! Once March rolled around. I decided to train else where as a result of this behavior. You'd think Professor Cindy or "Dave" would have checked on one of their students during this time line. read more

Great place to train. Prof. Cindy and Coach Dave run a well organized and maintained facility. The other professors and coaches whom regularly visit and a students practicing make the dojo a place to continue your BJJ lifestyle if you live in the area and a place to visit if your passing thru. I've been training at Gracie Barra Kirkland for a little over 3 months and it's already been one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The enthusiasm and positivity brought by Professor Cindy, Coach Dave, and everyone on the team is remarkable. They have created a positive learning environment unlike any I have ever experienced in Martial Arts; you genuinely feel that everyone is happy to have you there. The physical fitness and self defense aspects have also been amazing, I've been able to watch my skills grow over the past few months, which I fully attribute to Professor Cindy and Coach Dave's attention to detail, and patience with new students, as well as help from other students. I truly believe that you cannot find a better place to grow both physically and mentally. This gym is not only a gym but a safe place to find your own value and confidence! The instructors are amazing and really have the teaching spirit that many people lack. You can come here either experienced or with zero experience and either way you will feel extremely comfortable. Gracie Barra Kirkland is a hidden gem. I've been training with the Gracie Barra team for over five years primarily at the Bellevue location, but I also train at the Kirkland branch when I can. If you sign up with Gracie Barra, you're allowed to drop-in and train at any Gracie Barra in the world. That benefit is great for those of us who travel frequently or like to train with other training partners occasionally. One of the places I love to visit is Gracie Barra Kirkland, which has an amazing head instructor named Cindy Hales, as well as an amazing coach and manager Dave H. Cindy is a long-time Jiu-Jitsu practitioner who is a world champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and MMA fighter. But don't let those credentials scare you--Cindy is one of the nicest, most inclusive and approachable people I've met. She's a patient and knowledgeable instructor and welcomes both kids and adults to her school. Coach Dave H. is also a really great person with a passion for Jiu-Jitsu and a great sense of humor. He's a knowledgeable instructor and a great team mate. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced martial artist, Dave will be happy to have you.
