My family and I love Graeters. It's always delicious no matter what flavor you get and the people are always happy, patient and kind. My favorite thing to do is try out the seasonal flavors. I usually enjoy Graeter's, so this review is about the service at this location--not the ice cream itself. Ordering a simple item turned into an unnecessarily complicated experience with question after question. To make matters worse, I didn't even receive what I ordered. I ordered an ice cream cone, but instead of handing it to me, they made it and let it sit in a cup while we waited at the window. We sat there for about five minutes until another customer pulled up behind us, and only then did they hand us our order. By that point, the ice cream was already half melted. Graeter's isn't cheap, and I'm happy to pay premium prices for premium ice cream. But if I'm paying those prices, I expect to receive ice cream that's actually frozen--not half melted before it's even handed to me. While we were waiting, I could clearly hear the employees talking about me with the drive-thru window still cracked open. That was disappointing and unprofessional. The staff appeared to be very young, so this isn't meant as a personal criticism of them. However, the customer service at this location needs significant improvement. A simple order shouldn't be this difficult, and customers should be treated with courtesy and respect. Unfortunately, this experience left a very poor impression. read more

We got a kid's cup, chocolate cone, and traditional single scoop sundae and it was $27, which is far beyond what we usually budget for our family of 3 to get ice cream at other nearby spots. This was my first time at Graeter's, and it was so good! They have a drive thru and in store seating. Their menu is very big and they have season flavors as well. They have allergies listed on their website. We got butter pecan and the seasonal strawberry sorbet. So so soo good!!! Especially the sorbet! Despite what we read in the reviews the service was friendly and on point. We usually enjoy this in Cincinnati and love that they have a spot in Pittsburgh. Ample parking and with a little kid on warmer days, you can sit out on the patio and let them watch the cars at the car wash next door. The French pot ice cream with the irregularly crazy chocolate chunks are a fan favorite. Smooth and creamy chocolate chunks makes each scoop a fun adventure. Black raspberry chip is the signature but anything with the chunks is good. They do have dairy free and also some specials like Skyline spice and bearcat. I am definitely a repeat customer, even if it's only for the s'mores ice cream. It is the best s'mores ice cream around. The fact that they can also make anything into a milkshake and have it still be drinkable is admirable. (You know how some places you want to get a milkshake, but it's too thick to even drink or the ingredients get stuck in the straw...They don't have this problem here!) They're always pretty busy, which is to expect for a smaller actually good ice cream place. Lines go relatively fast. They do have some outdoor tables, which is a nice offering . The ice cream was delicious. Hard serve that was actually frozen is hard to find!! The prices were a little steep but the portions were large so I can't complain about that. While Graeter's in Castle Shannon right on Mt Lebanon Blvd is open until 11 PM seven days a week! That's amazing but they also have what you are looking for - great ice cream. There is limited outside seating, a walk in counter and drive through so all options are on the table. They also have their full selection of ice cream including all the chocolate chunk French pot flavors you devour from the pints in the grocery store and milkshakes. My wife enjoyed the special peach milkshake which she rated higher than chic fila (the medium is massive by the way) whereas I also was in the summer mood and tried the banana chocolate chunk special in the bowl. The 2nd location of Graeter's has now officially opened in the former Wendy's that stood here in Castle Shannon. When I used to visit their Wexford location I had asked about a rewards program which now they have. Having downloaded the app I am able to get "points for purchases" as well as earn rewards here or there. The place is very clean and well organized. Staff were very friendly and we were allowed to sample as many flavors as we'd like. They gave us a "take out" menu to keep with a complete listing of their products. They do have a "drive thru" but it is in the same format as the Wendy's that stood here previously. Their specialty is called "the French press" process using huge chocolate chunks which they make into various chocolate chips that are listed under the flavors by their own category. Since this method makes it thick they have to pack the ice cream into containers thus making it denser. This is why they cost more than your traditional ice cream shop. Be aware of the fact that there is an up-charge to the type of cone you select such as a waffle or pretzel cone as well as for toppings and syrups. They also have classic flavors as well and now I learned that their sorbets which they make are vegan. Each month or two they have a "specialty" flavor which in this case was strawberry chocolate chip. The sample was very good but I chose a dish of the dark chocolate brownie. My husband went with the peanut butter chocolate chip. Needless to say we both thoroughly loved our selections. I could taste the denseness in mine and one scoop was plenty for me. In addition to ice cream they sell candy, their famous stuffed bear, and have ice cream pints for sale on the premises. I am aware of the fact that you can buy this same ice cream at Giant Eagle but they don't carry the full selection and if you are after the seasonal flavor then you would have to buy it here. They have bottled water for sale but they do have small cups for tap water. Seating is limited both inside and out but I loved the layout of how the use ice cream spoons as door knobs as well as looking at the various candy selections, especially those they prepared for Easter. In addition to ice cream they serve all your traditional ice cream flair including sundaes, frozen drinks including coffee, and sodas. Graeter's is a franchise and they are located in various states nearby. You can also order their ice cream online through their website. They have their own lot which makes it a bit tricky to get out since they are located near the junction of Castle Shannon Blvd and next to a car wash. You also have to "go around" the drive through in order to get out since I can see this being problematic as the weather gets nicer. They are located at 437 Mt Lebanon Blvd and open daily. read more

This is the newest addition to the Castle Shannon business scene, and second location in the chain, not including the food truck. Located in the former Wendy's restaurant on Mount Lebanon Boulevard, it's next to Mr. Magic Car Wash. This is a small store with only eight tables and a long bar by the window (overlooking parking lot) with about 10 bar stools. There are a few tables outside in front (overlooking traffic). They have classic flavors and "famous" chip flavors of ice cream, classic sundaes, milkshakes, malts, double-dip sodas and smoothies. They sell boxed candy and small gift items. There's a case, half with chilled soda, half with frozen treats for sale. I ordered the Chunky Chunky Hippo (1 scoop) ice cream on a waffle cone. It was okay, but pricey ($5.30 with tax), especially since ice cream just reached the top of the cone (which I told a manager about when asked how I liked it; he did not comment). It also melted quickly. My flavor was vanilla icecream, toffee, peanuts, and milk chocolate chunks. Solid, nutritious lunch. However, considering it's expensive for what you get, and it was okay, nothing special. I won't be back. I'll stick with Shannon Sweet Stop nearby, and Betsy's in Mt. Lebanon, both reasonably priced mom & pop places. I've always been big on supporting small businesses. Since taking over this location, they have not improved the parking lot. It's still very small; you might have to park across the street at the T Station and walk (which stinks in bad weather), and cross a very busy street (3 lanes). They still use the drive-thru, which backs up traffic in the parking lot. It's also extremely difficult to make a left turn out of here. Bottom line: Located on the border of (well-heeled) Mt. Lebanon, okay, pricey ice cream, nice employees, and very limited outdoor seating. Should do well. read more

Now open after having their Ribbon-Cutting and Grand Opening yesterday, April 5th, this is the second location in the Pittsburgh area for this Cincinnati-based Ice Cream Company. I have been a fan of their ice cream for several years, and am glad to have a location in the South Hills. I have been to the location in Wexford, and have also visited them in Ohio. So I read the reviews on yelp and thought people were being a bit knitpicky, but I was wrong. It is located in the old Wendy's. The parking lot is an accident waiting to happen. It is incredibly narrow. We came in a pickup truck and will never do that again. I read reviews also complaining about the parking lot and thought they might have been exaggerating. They weren't. They have a lot of flavors and tons of employees. The employees aren't particularly friendly or happy. There are a few tables to eat at both inside and outside and there is a drive through which is convenient. The ice cream itself was a bit disappointing. It was served pretty much melted. I love soft gooey ice cream, but this was a bit too melted even for my liking. I remember reading a review where someone also mentioned that the ice cream melted too quickly and I kind of rolled my eyes... they weren't kidding. It literally barely holds its shape when scooped. The ice cream also isn't very flavorful. I got the coconut chocolate chip, malt ball and s'mores and it honestly tasted pretty much the same. It was very bland. My bf got the raspberry sorbet, the salted caramel and the maple cinnamon crunch and the only thing that really had a strong flavor was the raspberry. It's also incredibly expensive. Our ice cream cost $16. You could go to Giant Eagle and buy multiple pints for that price. We thought we'd give it a chance, but won't be back. Biggest issue here is that it's currently drive thru only. It makes for long lines and it's frustrating for a 1st time customer to browse the menu when there are a bunch of antsy annoyed people behind you lol I do recognize this is partially out of their control due to current labor "shortages". Ok, let's talk how absolutely AH-MAZING the Brown Butter Bourbon is!!! It is seriously the perfect mixture of boozy to sweet. It has candied pecans in it and it's truly drool worthy! I'm obsessed with Graeter's, even if I've only had one item there: the maple cinnamon crunch ice cream is amazing. You can definitely tell from the texture of the ice cream that it's homemade. My boyfriend is an EMT and he's become addicted to their milkshakes. On his most recent visit, they saw he was in uniform and gave him his milkshake for free. I discovered Graeter's while hosting my Ice Cream Social event and was SUPER stoked to see that they were opening one right in my area. Basically I pass it every day AND they have a drive-thru sooooo... there's that convenience factor when you're craving ice cream! I actually had the peach ice cream the first time I tried Graeter's and I just couldn't resist getting it again. Especially since it's a limited time flavor. It's legit so good. Real slices of peaches, not just flimsy little flecks of peach. My only ask for them is that they mark their menu what is gluten free. I understand they have a sign posted saying nothing is "safe" from cross contamination, but they did do an awesome job of accommodating me and immediately asked if it was an allergy. Since I'm celiac, they opened up a brand new container. They have the names of each ice cream, but no description of what exactly is in it on their menu. Even that would have been helpful to see if there's any gluten. I'm a big fan of Graeter's ice cream. Having one nearby means I rarely have other brands in my freezer. I agree that it is expensive by the scoop, but offer suggestions: 1. Get the app. Not only do you accumulate points for every dollar you spend, but you also get first notice of specials like $2 off on pints every Tuesday in July, and the arrival of special flavors. Admittedly,you only get a $5 credit for every hundred spent, but it's something. 2. If possible buy pints from the freezer inside. That's a big savings over a scoop of ice cream in the cone. Often the special flavors are available by the pint, but not always. 3. If you must order a scoop, think about a kiddie scoop in a cup. It's still a lot of ice cream and very satisfying. Plus you will save some calories. 4. Just enjoy your $5 cone of ice cream - after all, we have gotten used to the $5 latte. My very favorite flavor is Elena's blueberry pie.
