Sarris Candies is truly a Pittsburgh staple. Their chocolate is by far the best around, and their ice cream parlor is amazing! The portions are practically double what they claim, meaning "1 scoop" is more equivalent to 2-2.5 scoops, and their hard shell topping is the best. I can't believe I've never reviewed Sarris before. It's only my favorite ice cream of all time! I will drive 45 minutes any time for a chocolate peanut butter milk shake. This is a super cute place to visit for ice cream or any chocolate confection. During the holidays the entire chocolate shop is filled with fun Christmas decor. So many great reviews I had to try it. Came in and wow, ice cream and a candy store. Having no idea what I wanted, I asked the woman behind the counter what are they known for. Hard crust! So you put this topping on and it hardens to the ice cream. So... 2 scoops, 1 coffee and 1 cookies and cream. PB hard crust and some blueberries and whipped cream. Stopped in this week to try the Dubai Sundae & it didn't disappoint! Although I didn't love the pistachio ice cream ( I'd prefer the pistachios to be chopped in pieces not whole!). Do not visit Sarris if you are Jewish. When we visited today the store was filled with chocolate bunnies as well as religious Christian Easter chocolates. I asked a senior store associate whether they had any Passover chocolate items. The associate said that they did not have any Jewish themed chocolates. I told her that I could give her links to companies that made moulds for Jewish candies. She abruptly said that it would NEVER happen and shut me down. Another customer nearby overheard the conversation and was offended at how the associate had acted. The chocolates were overpriced. The ice cream scoops were very generous but the flavor was bland. Love the vibe of Sarris Candies - over the top candy store! Every type of chocolate candy you could imagine and more. There are so many options and the walls are lined floor to ceiling! I went during the Holidays & it was decorated with all different decor and gift options. I didn't even know they made sugar free chocolate covered pretzels so that was exciting to see! In the candy shop, they have a variety of interesting candies. With things like sherbet, jelly beans, jawbreakers, etc. They also have their own chocolate treats made in their factory, which is nearby. I've always had fond memories of Sarris, which is why I wanted to bring a friend who was visiting the U.S. from abroad to experience it. We arrived about 10 minutes before closing, which I completely understand is close to the end of the night. I was very apologetic and respectful, and the woman at the door was kind and welcoming. Unfortunately, the experience at the counter was disappointing. The employee who took our order visibly rolled her eyes and seemed annoyed that we were there. I tried to explain that this was my friend's first time and that I wanted to show him the chocolate castle, but she seemed uninterested and rushed us through the order. When I asked if the other half of the store was still open so he could see the chocolate castle, I was told, "Well, we're basically closed, it's almost 9," and the rope was then put up to block off that area. I understand closing procedures and respecting employees' time, but the attitude made the experience feel unwelcoming -- especially for a place that's meant to feel special and nostalgic. My family loves Sarris chocolate. We do not often get it as we live in Florida. As a treat, I decided to surprise my kids with Chocolate crosses for Easter. Not only did they arrive very timely, but the packaging was to be applauded. The size of the box initially made me concerned that I had gotten a different order or had accidently ordered more than I had intended. The mudslide (or was it mud pie flavored ice cream?) was very good. It was like a coffee with Oreos in it. Get ready for it to be packed if you come around a holiday. People drive very aggressively in the free private parking lot when it's busy. We went on a Wednesday evening before Easter, and it was filled with so many modeled shapes of chocolate. The holiday themed candies are definitely more expensive than just the standard bars which are perfectly wonderful! I knew not to spend all my money here because my coworkers told me they drop $200 whenever they go there. Luckily my date and I only paid $70 for everything we wanted, which still felt like a lot. I do think the ice cream parlor staff could be trained better. It is primarily all high schoolers, which is understandable for an ice cream shop. The ordering process can be confusing, especially if it's busy in the parlor (which it typically is). I often find that you have to repeat your order 2, 3, even 4 times, and sometimes it still doesn't come out right. The place is just as I remembered with an ice cream and soda parlor at one end complete with a pay organ. The center section is loaded with holiday decorations for sale and for Christmas-a large Christmas castle made out of chocolate that took 3 months to build! Stuffed animals abound throughout the store. They have candy to suit your every craving. Need a personalized box? Then go to their fresh loose candy and have a box made up to your size and liking. Pricing is based on weight. The far right of the store has chocolate covered pretzels, bash cakes, chocolate covered oreos, mugs filled with chocolate bars, and holiday themed shaped chocolates in both dark and milk chocolate. I'm a dark chocolate fan so I couldn't resist getting the dark chocolate Christmas tree. So good! I also got a box of dark chocolates which included truffles, chocolate covered angels, chocolate covered pecans, and cordial cherries. Sarris also has vegan chocolates as well as diabetic candy. Some of their ornate boxes are so lovely to look at but indeed come with a hefty price tag. It's so pretty but since it is candy you are paying for the looks and presentation. Sarris also does fund raising and you can find some of their merchandise in grocery stores as well as specialty stores. It's a Pittsburgh special but for quality candy expect to pay more. Growing up in Pittsburgh, Sarris Candies (their chocolate covered pretzels and peanut butter meltaways especially!) has been my favorite chocolate and sentimental comfort craving now that I no longer live in PA.
