My CMU alumni friends raved about Graeter's Ice Cream which was our last stop in the Pittsburgh area after lunch a couple Sundays ago. We decided to share a double scoop, which was more than enough for us. After sampling a few different ice creams, we decided to go with two very "summer" flavors: summer peach and lemon meringue pie. The summer peach was super juicy and refreshing. I've never had peach-flavored ice cream before, so this was a really nice treat. I'm usually not the biggest fan of citrus-based desserts, but the lemon meringue pie ice cream blew me away. There was a good balance of bright acidity mixed with pie crumbles without being overly tart. Overall, solid ice cream flavors. Graeter's is an old brand that stays on point with their flavors, especially their signature chips which are big chunks of dark chocolate mixed into a variety of bases, every flavor I tried was amazing! Also loved all their merch and take home options, they have a ton of indoor and outdoor outdoor seating, and the staff was really nice and knowledgeable, offering samples and answering all our questions. Today was my first-ever visit to Graeter's Ice Cream. According to their website, they have several locations across several states. Their menu includes dozens of flavors of ice cream, several sundaes, and several frozen drinks. Flavors can be very unique and interesting, such as Buckeye Blitz, Blueberry Pie, and Dark Chocolate Brownie. My husband and I visited this location in Wexford on a Saturday evening. Several employees were ready to serve us. They courteously greeted us, promptly took our orders, expertly created our ice creams, and accurately processed our payment. Prices were several dollars per ice cream. Here are my reviews for the foods and one other thing that I bought: Waffle cone with 2 scoops - 5 stars - My husband ate this ice cream cone. For his flavors, he selected Dutch Milk Chocolate and Butter Pecan. I taste-tested a few bites. These ice creams were very chocolately and pecany! The cone was a large size, and it was not soggy or leaky. Peach Melba Sundae - 5 stars - This sundae had a bundt cake on the bottom, peach ice cream in the middle, and toppings of rasperry, whipped cream, and praline almonds. The ice cream was so deliciously peachy! The bundt cake was not soggy. The toppings were sweet. Yum, yum, yum! S'mores ice cream - 5 stars - I had one scoop of this ice cream. I really enjoyed the taste of the marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers. Lip balm - 4 stars - Graeter's sold lip balm for only $1.49, which was a low price. The lip balm included sunscreen. According to the label, the flavor was supposed to be peach, but it did not taste peachy. The lip balm does moisturize my lips well. read more

I ordered an ice cream sunday thingy and I SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR NO CANDY FACE ON IT and guess what they did. I felt betrayal unlike any I've ever experienced before. The best spot in Pittsburgh for high quality ice cream. Damn this spot blew me and my wife away. The tall guy working there is super friendly and chill. I'm a big coffee ice cream flavor lover. Me and my wife wanted dessert after lunch and we found this place. The guy working suggested 3 flavors and he mentioned the "Vienna coffee" flavor which sounded interesting. I went ahead and got coconut chip as well. Let me tell you... the Vienna coffee flavor is probably one of the best coffee flavors I've ever had, especially here in Pittsburgh. Mixed in with the coconut chip, it's so delicious. The ice cream tastes creamy and very smooth. I'm a fan favorite of Millie's homemade and Bruster's real ice cream but I firmly believe this place has them beat. My wife got mocha chocolate chip which I took a bite out of and that flavor was extremely amazing. She opted for the double chocolate dipped cone and that cone was absolutely delicious. I was glad to see that a Graeter's shop has made its way into Pittsburgh. And they have quickly become my 2nd favorite ice creamery in the area (a close second, but one of their neighbors still reigns supreme). I've had their ice cream before in other cities and this location holds to their standard. First time I tried Graeter's. I'm pretty sure the company stems from Ohio, but they have a few shops in the Pittsburgh area as well. I was thinking about trying a coffee or fruity flavor, but finally settled on what seems to be one of their more popular and state-related flavors: Buckeye Blitz. Buckeye Blitz is actually quite tasty. It's described as a peanut butter ice cream with peanut butter cookie dough and chocolate chips inside of it. To me, the ice cream base is not very peanut buttery and tastes almost like chocolate. The chocolate chips are huge! They are more like mini flat chocolate truffles. Very good. There's also a fair amount of peanut butter cookie dough, although it's nothing too special. My only real qualm with Graeter's is the price point. To me, it's definitely a splurge for the portion size, since there are many other places in Pittsburgh that offer similar tasty ice cream at a lower price. If you're a chocolate-lover, you'll love the double-chocolate chunk ice cream which is loaded with giant pieces of divine chocolate goodness. The service is generally great. At this location, the associate making up your sundae is the determining factor on if they skimp on the hot fudge/toppings or administer liberally. We were so happy when Graeter's came in. They have really unusual flavors and all were better than the last. The people who work there are all really friendly and willing to help you find the right flavor. The buckeye flavor is really good. Peppermint is my absolute favorite. I wish they had it all year. We also love their chocolate. My mom loves their peach. I can't remember all the flavors that I tried. We've never had a bad flavor. They are all good. We also liked their chocolate covered nuts. Weird review. So, this place is adorable- it's neat, impeccably clean, inviting and well-decorated... the 21st century Wonka of ice cream shops. Tried a couple yummy samples, ordered a coffee milkshake annd.... It wasn't right. First off, for $6 I expected something much thicker, something you'd have to work at to get through a straw. Nope! This was all dairy, but thin like a frappe. Secondly, that was about the sweetest milkshake I'd ever had in my entire life. It was less a milkshake than a thin, tasty, cold coffee syrup in a cup. Definitely diabetes in there. If I had to guess, they added extra coffee syrup to my milkshake and gave me half the ice cream. Damn if my teeth weren't screaming abuse. Yikes. The ice cream samples I had were definitely good. I'll give it another shot and maybe just get a scoop. read more

Graeter's came highly recommended for my short stay in Pittsburgh. We set out to get some for dessert after dinner. I usually like fruit flavored ice cream flavors but was told I HAD to sample the cheese crown flavor. I did and I loved it! Cheesecake flavored ice cream with cinnamon sugar pastry pieces and fondant icing flakes. If you know me, cheesecake anything makes this girl happy and this did not disappoint. The ice cream itself had a nice amount of sweet cream cheese flavor with a hint of savory, complemented by the cinnamon flavor of the pastry pieces, and the icing flakes which I initially thought was weird gave a nice textural bite. Man, I was sold! The ice cream was rich, which, I later learned was due to the special French process that they use to make it. I also picked up a pint of strawberry cheesecake to-go. My husband and I have bought a few pints here in the past when we celebrate birthdays. We tried the mint chocolate chip and the peanut butter and chocolate which were both spectacular. Recently, we went on a Monday evening as a spur of the moment trip. I ordered one scoop of the Chunky Chunky Hippo which was a toffee ice cream filled with peanuts, chocolate covered caramel pieces and one other crunchy item (it is slipping my mind). The employee offered a pump of hot fudge on top - who can turn that down! The caveat was that one scoop was a decent size but fairly expensive, a little more price than other ice cream shops in the area. And I felt the Hippo had a little too many crunchy pieces throughout the ice cream (I know, it is usually the other way around!) than I wanted. But some people enjoy that so do not hesitate to try the flavor if that does not bother you! Oh yeah, the final reason we came here was for a pup cup for the dogs! We bought one cup (they have them sealed and in the cooler) to share between our pups which was enough. We will be back here, probably more for pints for special occasions than for a scoop of ice cream. It is so close and convenient and is a nice treat to amp up any homemade dessert! read more

I have heard many good things about this ice cream shop so I decided to try it out for myself. They are located in a strip mall in Wexford which also houses Whole Foods. The place is decked out as a very clean ice cream parlor. It is decked out with coolers, stuffed animals, and remnants of 4th of July decor. The store manager Matthew Howell was extremely nice and friendly to me in explaining their concept. Their ice cream is homemade not in this store but from their main headquarters in Cincinnati. The chain is now at least 4 generations old and all their ice cream is made by an old practice called French press which is a complicated process to make the ice cream denser and then it can be packed in pint containers. It is sold in most supermarkets usually a Giant Eagle. The chain opened in Cincinnati and then expanded to surrounding cities with this one being their first Pittsburgh location. Matt told me they are exploring the city to set up another location which I thought would be a great idea since it is difficult for people to travel so far for good quality ice cream. On to the flavors. They have a regular menu, and seasonal favorites. If you wish to get any cone but a standard one then there is a slight upcharge for it. They also offer for kids "baseball" cap ice cream holders with team logos on them for a keepsake. I was thrilled that they had peach and was delighted to learn that it does have actual peach pieces in it. Matt recommended that I pair it with a cheesecake blend which consists of ingredients made in their Cincinnati store. I learned that the Ohio store also has a bakery which sells this time of cheesecake so they made a flavor after it. They do catering as well. In addition to ice cream Graeter's offers sundaes and sodas. Yes, the have a soda jerk that actually works! What a nice throwback! They also serve coffee which is a blend roasted in Ohio so that will be on a future visit. They also sell greeting cards and various other items if you look around the store. After sampling both I was hooked so I had one scoop of each in a bowl. If you are not doing take out then you get a plastic bowl otherwise you get the traditional plastic cup. Outdoor seating is available as well. These flavors were literally two of the best I've ever tasted. As I was enjoying my ice cream Matt explained to me the importance of their keeping the establishment clean at all times so that when people walk in here you have a welcoming appearance and of course sanitary conditions. After I finished my ice cream I decided to purchase a pint of the peach to take home. Worried a little bit that it might melt en route, he packed it in dry ice so that I could get it safely to my freezer. I asked about a rewards program and learned that they are working on an app for that. Matt told me if I returned when it is operable today's visit would be credited to my purchase. They also have a food truck which is expected to be in the Pittsburgh area sometime in August for about two weeks to accommodate a kid's activity. Graeter's is open year round and easily accessible once you are in the strip mall. Plenty of parking is available. Great ice cream and customer friendly. read more

If you're not familiar with graders this is artisan level ice cream. They make all their ice cream French pot small batch even the stuff they sell in the grocery stores which is why it tends to be more expensive. However with the bigger price tag comes the better flavor and texture. They're very good my son and I love the vanilla, I love the peanut butter and my husband loves the bourbon pecan I think it is very good ice cream little pricey but so worth it. read more
