This rating is based on a casual dining restaurant experience. 3 of us came in for dinner on a Thursday night. I made the reservation in advance and wasn't sure what to expect. The place has been here for years but this was my first visit. It's located in a plaza on the south side of Hwy 7 so there's private parking. As you come in, there's the bar and the entrances to both the main and private party dining rooms. We were quickly greeted and given our choice of seating in either room, as the private party room had only a small birthday party in a little section. We could enjoy a colder temperature in the private room, or average room temperature in the main room where it would be less noisy. We chose the main room and it wasn't uncomfortable. Our host provided our menus and gave a choice of bottled, mineral, or tap water. Tap water in stemmed glasses with ice was fine with us. To my surprise, it came with a full basket of complimentary bread, butter and spicy oil. I have not seen this for years and we appreciated it. We ordered a rice balls (4 pcs) appetizer which came with marinara. They were a good size and had some cheese pull. Our entrees were a Ricky pizza (one of their 20 specialty pizzas); chicken parmigiana; and home made pappardelle with chicken and pesto cream sauce. Our orders were served within a few minutes of each other, all huge, and piping hot. We were offered additional grated cheese tableside. Besides our host, the owner (I assume) came round to serve my husband's Montecristo cocktail and wish him a happy birthday. He continued to check in along the way as well. This restaurant reminds me of being in Calabria at eateries just like this, meaning, the Italian equivalent of the British neighbourhood pub experience. There are families with children who may roam, groups of ladies getting together for a meal, singles having their pizza and beer after work, all in a space that somehow makes you aware of being connected in your mealtime. The food is what you may remember enjoying as a kid at your Italian friend's house: nonna's home made everything, from the bread and oil to the pasta and tomato sauce. It's not fancy, it's plentiful and hearty home food. The tomato sauce is fresh, exactly what all my family produces from their own jarred tomatoes. My chicken was cooked through without being dry. The pizza was nicely crisp and charred, straight from their wood oven. The pesto cream pappardelle was delicious, with plentiful pieces of grilled chicken. Both my daughter and I had half our meals left to enjoy later. You can order half portions for half the price. My husband managed to devour his whole pizza. He even ate the crust - which he never does. We didn't order wine or dessert as that was waiting at home. I didn't think to check if they offer any prosecco besides the basic wine list but their website is very well done, so I will look again, because I would definitely return. I first heard of this restaurant through my sister. We were looking for an authentic Italian restaurant to celebrate a birthday and Chinese New Year. It was very busy when we arrived and we could tell by the packed tables that we had found the right place for Italian food. They had so many options and it didn't matter what was ordered, the portions were HUGE! I had the fettuccine boacaiola and it was soooo good! Gran Gusto was a big let-down. I was ready to be wow-ed given some of the high praise I've read/heard about this place. And upon entering, my expectations rose even further as the first two things that greeted me were the sight of a large wood burning oven for the pizza, and the sound of people speaking in Italian. And so we eagerly sat down and ordered, and... were hugely disappointed. We got: - Arancini (rice balls) appetizer: These were nowhere near the great arancinis I've had in the past. This had too much rice and I couldn't even taste a hint of cheese. So while the bread crumb coating was fine (just the right amount of thickness), the inside was unflavourful. - Penne Alla Vodka: We got 2 pastas and between them, this was the one I preferred. Good cook on the noodles and the sauce had just enough of the vodka taste (though would have liked if it had been a bit stronger). There was supposed to be bacon on it but hardly tasted that as its flavour was drowned by the sauce. - Gnocchi Piemontese: This was labelled as home made pasta on the menu so was expecting much more. The potato flavour of the gnocchi didn't come through, the tomato sauce was bland, and the ground beef was non-existent. - Frittura Mista: A medley of fried seafood (calamari, shrimps, fillet of sole, cuttlefish) that was ok anf at least broke the monotony of the bland pastas. - Chocolate Fudge Cake: Gran Gusto said their cakes are fresh but this was definitely not the case here. The fudge had frozen hard and this tasted like it had been in the fridge for days. Even if I had never read any of the previous reviews and bought into the hype, it's sad to say that Gran Gusto would be average at best. Lots of better Italian restaurants elsewhere in the city. read more

This place seems like a family-owned restaurant. Located in Woodbridge near Weston and Highway7. It is a very quiet restaurant with an authentic family feel to it. They host private functions. A little bit on the pricier side. We ordered the Penne Alla Vodka, Mussels and Lucia pizza. Mussels: tomato sauce was very flavourful, we put some of the house special oil into it which made it taste so much better Penne Alla Vodka: pasta was cooked to perfection - al dante style, tomatoey creamy sauce was the right consistency and it tasted like maple bacon in the sauce which gave it a different taste that im normally used to in pastas Lucia Pizza: cheesy and proscuitto not too salty like it normally is (wished there was more meat though) i like more meats on my pizza so we shouldve ordered something else Overall it was a good experience, always nice to try something new when youre in the area read more

Once again another **HIDDEN GEM ALERT** Hidden Gems are the types of restaurants I live for and love trying. I love to try mom and pop shops that are hidden and places that some people I know wont try because they are not big box restaurants or because of how they look. Little do they understand is that some of the best food in the world comes from mom and pop shops. Well Gran Gusto is one of those place. Its in a small plaza with minimum parking and to be quite honest with you if you are not looking for it you will pass right by. If you live in Woodbridge I am sure that you know of Gran Gusto but if you live on the out skirts I'm sure you may have never even known that its there. Well next time you are hungry and driving on hwy 7 slow down and pull in. When you walk in you are greeted by the very old decor, run down bar. A few steps in you are then faced with an Italian speaking waiter and a wood oven imported from Italy. You will notice the smell as soon as you walk in. The chairs and the tables are just as old as the restaurant is but put all that aside and you are faced with some of the best tasting food in the 905. Please don't expect fancy garnish just expect HUGE portions of some of the tastiest Italian food you have ever tried. This is as authentic as it gets. Feels like I'm eating at my grandmothers dining room table for Sunday lunch. This review will go on forever with me describing all the different dishes I have tried at Gran Gusto so I will post pictures of a few of the dishes I have tried and will continue to update them as I keep visiting. I have been going to Gran Gusto for family dining, family functions and business entertaining for almost 10 years. The pizza here is from a wood burning oven and have been consistently very very good. For family functions we usually go "family style" filling the table with antipasto, pasta and pizza. For business, our guests are always pleased not only with the food, but the family environment. I can't speak to the menu, as after literally hundreds of visits, I have hardly ever looked at it. I just tell them what I want and they make it. It's that kind of place. In short, it's our go-to place for any occasion that calls for good food in a freindly and inviting environment. read more

Definitely some regulars at this restaurant. Sat near the entrance but there was more of a dining room area around the corner from where we sat. We ordered take out: crispy calamari, gnocchi and Quattro pizza. It was so good. The calamari was crispy and the inside tender. It was even better with dip although next time, I will ask for two dips with our order because one wasn't enough. It was put in a box with vents to keep it crispy. Gnocchi was homemade and better then what I tried to make from scratch at home. They wrapped it in plastic saran so the sauce wouldn't leak in the car. The pizza was also pretty good with homemade pizza sauce. They were kind enough to put our order in a box so our food wouldn't tip over in the car. This is much better then a take out bag where all your food can cause a mess in the car when it shifts around. I overall, highly recommend. This isn't "Eastside Mario" but a real Italian restaurant serving great food. Definitley going back to try their other dishes. read more

Simply marvellous. Here's our take-out experience. Service: Fast, courteous, and friendly, both over the phone and in person. I was given options I never knew I had and it allowed us to have our meals prepared just the way we wanted. Restaurant: We didn't dine-in, we couldn't, but could see it's a family restaurant, not overly classy but clean, cozy and quite nice. Great for families. Food: Very good! The hand made pasta was excellent, great texture and flavour with a very home-style sauce that we loved so much. Calamari was good, crispy outside and soft inside, not rubbery at all, lovely dipping sauce. The star of the show was the pizza, it looked just as beautiful as it tasted, fine quality ingredients, thin crust, just the right amount of cheese, and tasty pizza sauce! The best part is, everything tasted perfect without being overly salty or overly greasy. Well done. I have to say the calamari portion is huge. Over the phone, when I was ordering, the gentleman asked me if I wanted the regular size or large calamari. I ordered just the regular, but what we got was a very generous helping that could have easily satisfied 3 or possibly 4 people as an appetizer. Thanks! Very down home - humble italian food. Visited this restaurant with my big italian family. They are picky eaters, particularly about dishes they can easily make at home, like penne with meat sauce and veal parm. However, this restaurant knocked it out of the park. RE: Food -the calamari is amazing. Huge portion. The rings themselves are huge and the batter is not heavy. -The kids had penne all a vodka - a staple at home. They loved it. A classic recipe done right. Just wish I knew how big the portions were. 1 plate would have been enough for two children under 10 years old. We ended up taking home a plate, but it warmed well the next day. -lots of choice for pizza, I had the Americana with green peppers, mushrooms and pepperoni. So good! One of my guests had the bruschetta pizza with melted bocconcino on the bottom. I would get that, looked light and fresh -spaghetti all chitarra - a huge hit with the two guests who ordered it at my table. The sauce is very similar to what we would make at home. Nothing like a thin crust stone oven pizza. This is my favourite place to go to for homemade pizza. Their Caesar salad is delicious also. There is a good variety of pasta and meat dishes too. What they may lack in decor, they more than make up for in their food quality and hospitality. Came here after a close friend recommended this place. Was even considering having my son's baptism, based on my friend's referral. Thank God my husband and I decided to come for date night, because after our experience at this restaurant we will never ever come back, and will not be having our son's baptism here. Came on recommendation from a friend. We had a party of 17 so we pre-ordered our menu. Food was very good for the most part. Tasty and served hot. No complaints from anybody. Had 4 children but only served 3 of their dishes but still charged us for four without explanation. The service on the second hand was terrible....especially when they auto charge you 15% gratuity. Not a single ask for seconds when we were told there would be more then enough for seconds, not a single ask if we wanted anything to drink like water, pop, juice that was of course to be included. The only time we could get a drink is if we flagged down a waiter running from table to table. After a friendly mention to the owner, then and only then did somebody come and ask if anybody wanted a drink. We had a rowdy group of people who walked in thinking they were in a sports bar using extremely loud and foul language in front of our kids, but yet nobody working there said a thing to them. Food again was good but took what seemed forever between courses. But when it started to get late, they rushed us through desert and coffee. I wish I could give it at the very least a 4 star, but the experience was not what we were told or expected. Suggestion: Hire more wait staff and tell the loud foul mouthed customers to keep it down in front of children. read more
