I would take honesty and quality out of the vocabulary for this barbershop. My father has been constant customer for Jerry's but it took two bad visits to end the relationship. First, my father's request for a haircut wasn't what he wanted. He was serviced by Mimi, but my father noticed some parts of the hair was longer than other parts. He then returned to Jerry's , told Jerry the problem, and Jerry gave him a refund but no apology. Second, my dad went for another haircut and he got cut in the back of his head twice. He was only given a little dash of alcohol to cover the mistakes and was sent on his way. When my father arrived to his home, he was shocked at how deep and bloody the cut was when he looked on the mirror. He decided to take his business elsewhere. I'm writing this because it's deeply upsetting that a long time barbershop would not be empathetic, admit their mistakes and apologize. This damages the customer seller relationship and it's pretty disappointing. I would not recommend this business. read more

I wanted to support a local barbershop, and Grand Barber Shop in El Cerrito seemed like a great choice--it has that classic, old-school feel, like it's been there forever. I went in for a beard trim, and while the barber I was originally supposed to see was finishing up with another client, another gentleman offered to take me. He was friendly, and the conversation was great, which made me feel at ease. I told him I wanted to square up my beard and trim it while keeping it long. He assured me he'd give me a good trim. When he finished, I checked in the mirror and thought it looked fine, so I paid $40 and headed out. However, once I got home, my wife immediately noticed that my beard was uneven--one side was longer than the other, and there were long stray hairs under my chin that were completely missed. Basically, it was a mess. I ended up having to trim it all off just to fix it. I walked in expecting a professional beard trim and left feeling like I got scammed out of $40 and lost my beard in the process. I definitely won't be coming back for beard services. That said, the shop has a solid reputation for haircuts, so if that's what you're looking for, it might be worth checking out. But if you need a beard trim, I'd recommend going elsewhere. read more

I was looking for a barber shop in the area after moving here and found this one. I saw the positive reviews, so was very hopeful. I called in for a same day appointment and was immediately noted down and though I spelled my name, the person on the phone kept misidentifying me which left me feeling pretty uneasy. I arrive 5 minutes before my scheduled time and there are two people working the shop, I believe it's Jerry and Mimi, but despite making an appointment, they're still working on the people in the chair. While I usually wouldn't be upset and am patient, I ended up waiting for around 20-30 minutes for my turn. Already I was feeling uneasy but was hoping the cut will make up for it, especially after reading so many positive reviews. I sat down with Jerry and told him my specifics. A 1.5 on the sides, thin out the top, keep the length, and do a hard part. The sides started out alright with him using an electric razor and blending it in. Was nothing special though I'll note that it was more so tapered than a fade. He didn't ask if I wanted it faded in or tapered, which I found odd for a barbershop but kept moving along with the taper. We get to the top and he begins using thinning shears which made me a little hopeful and he also switched out to flat blade scissors to clean up the area around the part. Without asking or checking in if it's thin enough with me, he immediately began applying gel or product but my hair was still too thick. I shared that my hair grows thick instead of long and would like to thin it out more which he said ok. This is the rough part. Instead of thing it out or wetting my hair, he immediately starts cutting length (you can tell by the scissors and the technique where they put the hair between their fingers and begin snipping away) and that's when i knew it was over for me. From cutting it while there's product to slashing length, I knew the haircut wasn't going to look good. They also use a large far away mirror for you to see the cut instead of a close one. A positive was the hot lather and razor to clean up the sides and back but it also ended up being disappointing because they didn't even give me a mirror to check the back. Wrapping up, he began taking off the cover without even doing the hard part which I had to ask and remind him to. When he began doing the part, he had a hard time finding it despite me pointing it out and then began using an electric razor. Using the electric razor didn't bother me too much but it didn't even define the part, so he had to switch to another electric razor to finally get the definition. Left me wondering why he didn't use the razor blade instead when previous barbers I've had done that for less. I got up immediately checked my hair but it was hardened from the product, again, I didn't ask to use any product, and I've only had experiences where barbers and hair stylists would ask first. When I did, what was once a styled hairstyle was more like a buzzcut mixed with an undercut except there's barely any length on the top. Someone immediately commented too "yikes, he took off too much." It made sense since the other reviews on here mention to come if you want a buzz cut or to have your hair chopped off, especially with the military background. Price overall wasn't too bad with it being $30 (cash preferred but I paid in card and left a 10% tip to cover the processing fee). I wish they had a sign or something online saying cash preferred. Now the ambience, it is very much like an old school barbershop and Jerry is a nice guy, I won't fault him for that. He was conversational and asked me questions about myself. While the other reviews mention it's a local small business where they know their patrons' names, I didn't get asked what my name was so felt very in and out. I left the barbershop pretty unhappy but bit the bullet with a smile and paid and left to which he said thank you and he hopes to see me again. I'm still deciding if I'll come back or not. To close this review, I'll leave it at 2.5 stars with the deductions being: lacking appointment recognition, lacking attention to detail, and lacking service. The 2.5 stars comes with the grace that the price isn't bad and Jerry is a nice guy. They're all very nice, but for what I was left with, I'm feeling underwhelmed and disappointed enough that I have to leave this review as a warning. My appointment was not honored, my haircut was not listened to, and the personalized service I requested was not granted. Echoing another review here, if you're looking for a place to cut your hair and leave it styled at a good price, this is not the place. If you're looking for a place to chop off your hair and leave it short and fresh, this is your place. On the cultural awareness part, if you're an Asian American with straight hair that requires attention to detail and would like the modern style such as those seen at @12pell on Instagram, this might not be the place. read more

Called to setup an appointment and they told me the time would I scheduled would work. Drove 20 minutes out of my way and arrived to my appointment on time. Soon as I walk in they told me to sit down and that they had 2 people ahead of me. Wtf??? The point of the appointment was to be seen relatively close to the time I scheduled, not an hour later. I walked out and the woman stopped me to ask when my appointment was and I said "now actually. I'm the person who called in to schedule." Instead of making it right she told me to call her instead to make an appointment not the shop. Well that doesn't help me now and/or the fact that I pushed plans and went out of my way to go there. $35 haircut, no shampoo. Went in yesterday and asked for a simple cut. 8 on top and 4 on the side. Instead, everything is off-balance. There's at least 2 inches left on the top. I've been going to Grand Barber for probably 15 years and there's a lot to like about it. It's an old time barber shop, local small business which is what I like to support. The barbers are friendly and the price is pretty reasonable, $30 for a men's cut. However, I am really considering moving on to another barber for one simple and frustrating reason. Jerry, the shop owner, consistently cuts my hair much shorter than I specifically ask. I recently had a cut and showed him, "Leave this much," with my fingers, 1.5-2" long. "On the top?" he asked and I said, "No, all over." Yet, he continues cutting my hair to 1/3-1/2" leaving the top a bit longer. I don't know how to cut hair and I'm not telling him how to do his job. But it's not his job to decide what length I want my hair. The other obvious problem is that once he starts cutting it too short, it's not like he can put it back. It's too late to tell him to leave it longer. read more

So I find myself here in Oakland for two months on business. Since I am prior service Army, I figured I'd give a military owned barber shop my business. Made my reservation a couple days prior. Arrive at shop on time, both barbers were friendly and greeted me. My barber was Rosa. I asked for my haircut and she proceeded to cut my hair. As she is cutting my hair the other female barber was telling her how to cut my hair. I was ok with it, but found it out of place for one barber to tell another how to cut my hair. So as I'm getting my haircut I then ask Rosa if she knows how to do a hard part. She says yes. Well guess what, she didn't know. Left me with a bald spot where my part should've been. Got my vaccine jab this week and was feeling bold so had my first haircut in over a year. Back when things were normal I used to come here a lot - a walk-in place where you could wait for a bit on a comfy sofa and get a good hair cut at less than 20 bucks. It's a really nice place, family owned and operated and definitely family friendly. There's something great about a place that has toys and videos for kids and you see entire generations coming in for a trim and a chat. Anyway, after a year of using clippers and experimenting with unusual hair styles it was time for a proper cut. The Grand is now open to walk ins again and it was a pleasure to go back. Got an excellent cut, some nice chat and a feeling of normality again, and my wife is raving about the improvement. Nice to have this neighbourhood staple back. read more

Walked in 4 people ahead of me in the shop. Two barbers, Jerry and daughter. Man sat in Jerry's chair. He was there over an hour having a complete haircut and shave. Daughter Cut next persons hair with very much conversation and little haircutting. Completed finally and next person sat down, apparently a friend of the daughter as she spent more time talking than cutting. Finally finished him and his son, the third person waiting got into the chair. Over an hour had passed. The four person then got into Jerry's chair and I was prepared to get into the next available chair. An hour and a half had passed. As the young man, who talked with the lady barber about schools etc. and she also talked with the father who now was sitting across from the chair his son was in. Finally she completed the haircut of the son and as he was about to stand up another young man came into the shop and the lady barber said "your next " to him. I stood up and said " He's next? " And both barbers said " That's right". I left the shop without the intention of ever returning. If I had been advised that there was 4 persons ahead of me and then that there were reservations after that. I could have made a decision to stay or leave. I used to be a big fan of this shop. Fellow Marine Corps veteran-owned, great set of barbers. Went in a few days ago and got a haircut+beard trim though and it was pretty sloppy. I paid 40$ for the whole affair, didn't even check the work first because I've had such good experiences historically. However, when I checked later, Jerry left a lot of hair at the base of my neck completely untouched, didn't fade into the neckline at all, and the top is choppier than when I cut it myself. There was some of the shaving goop stuck on the back of my head also. I've never heard of anything like that except when customers are hella rude and deserve it. However, I came in and sat down quietly on my phone to wait and kept silent through most of the cut like always so I'm not sure what was different this time. 3 stars in tragic memory of a once loved shop. read more

Had my daughter first haircut done by Laura when she was just over a year and I'm planning on going back in this week for anothe one!! She's a magician!! Very glad that I live down the street from this place! I almost only ever get my hair done at barber shops. Both Laura and Rosa have done a great job with my hair, and I've only heard good things about the two other barbers. It's to the point now where I actively look forward to my next haircut! Pretty cool little place. Only accepts cash. Has a pleasant old-school feel to the shop. Price is about the same as somewhere like Supercuts, but this spot is a lot better, so might as well come here than go to some generic big name place. Nice, friendly, experienced people working here. Great experience overall. I would definitely recommend Rosa. A few months back I came here and got a haircut from some other guy and it wasn't bad but it wasn't exactly what I had wanted. Rosa is really easy to talk to and doesn't make you feel uncomfortable in the slightest when you ask for something like "can you trim a little shorter here" etc. She will even tell you what she is doing and explain and what not.
