With Le's expertise, we both looked, and felt, better in no time at all. Plus, she is a nice person to deal with. Appointments were easy to book over the phone, and her shop definitely felt safe. Highly disappointing experience. I called to schedule an appointment for my son's haircut 2 days in advance, only to be lectured about how I need to show up because her business depends on us showing up for our haircut. The call already put a sour taste in my mouth, but I assured her we were making the appointment because we do in fact plan to come, and could be there early. Come time for the appointment, we arrive 10 minutes early to find the shop is dark, closed and locked up. I called to see if any more info could be gathered, no answer. A voicemail was left with my phone number, but no returned call was received. No explanation seen or given for why the shop was closed. We will unfortunately not be returning to this business again. read more

This is a trusty place to get a basic trim. As a woman, there are times when I just want a little pick me up, in the form of a simple haircut to get rid of any dry split ends. That is exactly what I got! For a simple, non fancy haircut, the older woman (Jenny? Linh?) is my touch up go-to hairstylist! I know that I won't go to her to get my highlights retouched or to change the face framing layers, but for a trim, yes she's the woman! She's also so friendly and such a cute little asian lady! Haircuts are great and they're usually very nice but the service is pretty bad. It became a real struggle to walk-in so I started making appointments. That worked until today When I had a 9:30am appointment, arrived at 9:25am. The person in the chair finished at 9:32am and then she took a walk-in in front of me saying he had been waiting a long time. There was no discussion of it was okay with me or if I had somewhere I needed to be (I did). Since I couldn't wait I asked to make an appointment for the next weekend but she said they're closed next weekend. It's too bad, because I really like the haircuts to the point I was making appointments a month in advance and arranging my weekend plans around being able to fit in a Saturday morning once a month (she closes Sundays and too early on weekdays to make after work an option). At this point though I've been a customer for five years and this is the fourth time I can remember leaving frustrated and without a haircut due to similar issues. I don't see how I can go back if it's going to be like this. read more

I live near by, and decided to give it a try. The first time the cut was OK, it was done by a woman, and I probably would give it 3.5 rating. After a $1 haircuts I have experienced traveling in a wilderness of Central America I am not too picky anymore. However the second time around I was served by a old guy with "bicycle handle" mustache, and he gave me really bad cut. I really like Lee. She's fabulous with my kids and has been cutting their hair forever. She does a good job with my hair too. The only problem with the place is that hours aren't posted on Yelp, which I hope I have remedied today by sending in a photo. If not, the current hours are 9 to 5:30 Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday. Note: after I submitted the hours to Yelp they posted incorrect hours. I like my sides and the back of my head shaved bald. So I'm always on a quest for the best barber. Let's call it the Quest for the BEST Bay Area Barber. This was my 2nd time here, first time was about 8 years ago. Today this place has changed since then. The place was ok, just not the barber shop I remember it being. What a beautiful hybrid. It's a true barber shop:outdated magazines combs resting in bluish disinfectant, I believe you can even get a shave. In short it's everything that is right with America. Now the general downside to these kinds of places is that they are run by guys whose philosophy is that if you leave with less hair than you walked in with, it's a haircut. These guys are good. Not hair stylist good, they don't have shelves full of different hair products for curly hair, limp hair, brittle hair and the like, rather this place is full of people who have been cutting hair for decades. The owner has a handlebar mustache to be proud of, and it's always waxed and twirlled to a mervelous degree. Aside from cool facial hair, they know what to do with long hair. I know this might seem trivial, but as a guy with shoulder length curly hair, it can be a difficult task to get it cut reasonably well. All to often I've had it all chopped off, or hardly touched at all. Leon's Baber Shop knows what to do, and that takes 5 star skill. read more

What a gem of a discovery in the middle of all the mini-mall centers along San Pablo Avenue! Despite living in the East Bay, I'd been going to San Francisco for 10+ years for haircuts because I loved the hair place I found when living there (City Hair and Nail) -- they gave me great, reliable, stylish cuts for $15. I never thought I'd be able to beat it. Tired of commuting just to get a haircut, I turned to Yelp and learned about Leon's. I was a little skeptical, but figured it was worth a shot -- and I'm thrilled that I did! Leon's is utterly unassuming in appearance -- not a place I would likely stop without a recommendation (thanks, Yelp folks). At the same time, it is a reassuring throwback to the old-school barber shop I went to as a kid (without the old-school approach to hair cutting). I got an excellent cut for $15 from a woman named Lee, and will definitely return. The owner, Gene, is a very friendly guy with a perfectly styled handlebar/Rollie Fingers-style mustache -- if he cuts hair half as well as he grooms his mustache, I'm sure I would be a happy customer. I've finally found my barber! Gem of a discovery is right! I came here based on the Yelp recommendations below, and boy were they spot on. I've been looking for a decent barber here in the Berkeley area for three years now, and I've been dreading looking for a new one (again) -- so much so that I haven't had my hair cut for 2 months now. Gene was excellent; very clean, very quick, very personable, and very polite. He's one of the lost, great barbers -- with a real barbers' license. The cut was only $15, but I simply had to give Gene a $5 tip for the quality service, so I paid $20 total (which is what I had gotten used to paying elsewhere anyway). read more

Leon's is a great place for a good cut. I've had both Le & Lisa cut my hair. I personally liked Le's haircut better, maybe it's because she understood what I wanted since I described it in detail. Before moving to the bay area I used to pay $50 + tip for a haircut from a stylist. Now I pay less than half of that with tip and I can't tell the difference! read more

I came in on a Monday with 2.5 months worth of scruff to play with. Before entering the chair I asked the older asian woman if she knew how to do a flat top/crew cut...she assured me that she did. I told her I wanted it 0 on the sides and tapered in a little bit near the top, then flat on top. After 2 customers walked in shortly after she started, I was wondering if she was going to give me the attention I deserved, after all, before coming in, I sat in my car contemplating this place while I watched her put 20 minutes of finishing touches on the previous customer who had no more than 8 white hairs on his head. I thought I was gonna be in for a real treat today, man was I wrong! As soon as those 2 extra customers came in, I was done for. She did the sides perfect, cut some triangular line into the front of my hair line for some reason, then must have gotten sidetracked and forgot about the FLAT FUCKING TOP I asked for!!! I could have done the same job, if not better with a flowbee at #3. Ya see, a Flowbee doesn't leave a coneheaded point on the top of your head, it just follows the contours of your scalp. Somehow, this bitch decided that I looked better as a sharpened pencil tip than I do as a man with a flat top. So, I was in and out of the chair in about 8 minutes, a record setting haircut in my opinion, with the most embarrassing frock I've ever had in my life. Even when I told her at the end, I wanted this flat, all she said was, yes, I cut it to a 3, in broken English, like, that's ok, u look fine, it will grow back, now MOVE, I have more money to make, get lost! So, off to my hotel I go to use my own clippers to salvage what I can...then off to the store to buy a nice hat! This place SUCKS! read more

I've had my hair cut by Lee two times now and I must say, she is very, very skilled. She'll give you a great cut for not much money. However, a warning to any other men that have longish hair: Both times I went in I had shoulder length hair that I wanted trimmed up and shortened "a little bit." I ended up with bangs each time, my hair a good six inches shorter than I had wanted. It's NOT a bad cut, in fact it's VERY good, just much shorter than I wanted. Just make sure to specify EXACTLY how much hair you want left before she starts and be ready for a great cut. read more

I tried Leon's haircutters due to its proximity to shopping areas (fuel costs make one pay attention to such convenience factors) and was pleasantly surprised at the service quality and skill of the two ladies at Leon's.
