You know you have a master barber when you can barely feel the comb and the scissor. Yes, Sam was very skilled at using shears, mark of a true barber. The man is an artist. All these tatted young barbers these days only capable of cutting one style of hair (high fade) with a clipper need to learn from this guy. I walked in with at least 6-8 inches long mane and of course, he had to use a clipper to get rid of a lot of it and the rest was done with shears and comb. The haircut is clean, looks great, and Sam definitely knows the game better than most. The shop has a long history at Point Richmond and everything you see on the walls including the music playing in the background takes you back to a different place and time. Updating my review & refreshing my love for visiting Park Place. The last time I went was a couple of months ago... I had an afternoon appointment, but had to race back from work on the Peninsula. I called my husband and asked him to let Sam know I was running late. "No worries; stay safe!" was the reply... I showed up right before closing and dealt with me and my motorcycle hair. Wow I haven't been to a real barber in decades! Normally my hair is short and simple and I frequent the unisex stylists like Great Clips, Sports Clips, Supercuts, etc. I decided to use part of my lunch break to try the local barber near my work. I immediately thought about my boyhood in Seattle when my dad always took me to the same barber for crewcuts. When that barber lost his lease, he opened up shop in the basement of his house for his regular customers! LOL! Park Place Barbers brought back some of those memories. Old school, comfy and inviting, and yes they know how to cut men's hair with a razor. I left feeling very good with my haircut for the upcoming weekend (we have a friend's wedding and another graduation party to attend). Sam and Maria have cut my hair for about 9 months. I was so happy to see them re-open this month. I've been isolating at home -- really strict about it -- and was nervous about having my hair cut today. But I should not have worried. They are taking the safety concerns really seriously. The shop was extremely clean, everyone had masks, they sanitized and cleaned constantly. Sam and Maria even took courses about COVID-19 while the shop was closed. Actually, "Miss First to Review"; it's just John and Gene - haven't you actually been to the place you're reviewing? The third chair is storage and has been for the 15 years or so I've been having my hair cut here. These gentlemen barbers are really something else and they have provided excellent life long service to the male community of Contra Costa and surrounding customers. My husband and I really enjoy doing business with them and have never had a problem with a haircut, even on special requests. They are comfortable, easy going straight men, both married and into various interests. If you're looking for an ice breaker, talk about travel or business. Savvy guys with a smart, well traveled outlook. From recent conversation, I expect they'll be there for another 10 years so it's not too late to establish yourself as a regular. John runs the seat closest to the door and is clean shaven. He enjoys travel and golf. Gene has the middle chair and enjoys politics and business and as you get to know them, probably many other things will emerge. Classical barber shop talk and they remember you if you introduce yourself. Feel free to call ahead to check on the wait. Busy days can be up to 45 minutes, but they keep the shop stocked with dozens of magazines and current issues. There's places to eat in the area and a few coffee shops and a nice little park in front, if you have people waiting for you. New owners shifted vibe to more hipster-like. I was not entirely pleased with my first two haircuts here with Anjel. I was going to try Carlos but when I showed up at 3 pm and found "Out for lunch; Be back soon" sign on the door with no one in sight I figured out they weren't interested in my business. The first haircut was good, however you had to listen to the complain about how COVID affected the business and makes you feel bad and give more tips. The second was also an appointment with the men but when I got there he offer the lady to cut my hair, so I agree and it was one of worst haircut. With all the bad vibes, I decided to give the business another chance given I want to support local business, so I call and ask for appointment and was told they are very busy and the only appointment available is late Friday. I took the appointment and rearrange all my work schedule so I get a haircut. As I enter the business 5 min before my appointment, he is finishing up with a customer and thought I'm set, but I'm wrong; he told me there is a few people in front of me and he said, you have to wait 1hr, before your turn !!!!
