A terrible experience we arrive 10 min early for lunch. The woman who was the waitress was rude from the beginning. Another couple came in ( we were the only people in the restaurant) and she took their order as I was on the phone with my husband. I had just come from the Billings hospital, and on our way home and thought that the Grand would be a great place to get a bite of food. The waitress intentionally went about clearing tables, washing glasses and refused to wait on us. After about 20 minutes we realized she was not interested in helping us. When we got up to leave she continued to be rude. I will never go back. People like that should not be in the "service" industry. We have been stopping g there for years. Pretty cool little boutique hotel that was built in 1890! My brother-in-law and I stayed in a two bed room (queen and daybed) that used the common bathrooms during a road trip. The room was simple, but comfortable and the bathrooms and showers were clean and well-stocked with shampoo, etc. We ate dinner and breakfast at the attached restaurant and, while it was a tad on the pricey side, the food was delicious and the service was great. My wife and were traveling over Thanksgiving. We looked for restaurants open on Thanksgiving and found that the Grand Hotel was serving a holiday meal. Luckily, we were able to get reservations! The entire experience was outstanding. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. I wouldn't have imagined that a Thanksgiving buffet could be so good. The food here is delicious. We had the shrimp scampi and the steak special. Both were yum. The salad isn't the typical iceberg lettuce varietal which was nice. We had the brussel sprout app which was also good. Mind you, we live in an area where food is often farm to table, so our palate is spoiled. That being said, we were not disappointed in the meal or the wine. What removed a star was the service. The server, while very sweet, didn't ask whether we wanted another glass of wine (when empty glass - ask!) and then brought our bill without asking if we wanted dessert first (which we did). Another thing we noticed is that the bartender, while interacting with guests talked about himself a lot. He should be asking guests more questions about themselves rather than talking about himself so much. Again, NICE guy ! So... minor errors. Still highly recommend! read more

This place truly has it all. Beautiful rooms, excellent food and cocktails, great ambiance, and incredibly friendly staff. Perfect for a date night, weekend getaway, or as a venue for meetings or celebrations. We hosted a board meeting and Christmas party here and the private banquet room worked perfectly for our group. I can't say enough good things about the staff and the way they bent over backwards to accommodate us. Big Timber certainly has a hidden gem in the Grand Hotel and Restaurant! read more

HOTEL REVIEW: Very disappointed from our stay. The check-in process was non-existant: the hotel was closed with no one at the front desk, and after calling the number at the front desk, I was informed that I should have received a text and phone call with instructions on how to check-in and where to obtain a key. Not only did I not receive the text and phone call, but when provided the instructions over the phone, the key box was empty. The assistant manager/supervisor arrived at the hotel to hand us the key. This was completely ridiculous. Regarding the room, it is a historic hotel so I wasn't expecting anything particularly modern. However, the door knob was missing on the bathroom door so we couldn't shut it for fear of getting stuck inside. It is possible to keep the historic nature of the room while also ensuring that it's safe and repaired correctly. Check-out was strange too. I noted the times that the front desk was supposed to be open and staffed - 8am - and went to drop my key off around 8:10am with the expectation that someone was going to be there. No one was at the front desk. I heard voices down the hall just a bit and saw two people talking. I inquired if the front desk was open and they said not yet. I asked if they were other guests - no - and then if they were staff - yes. I then told them I was trying to check out, gave one of them a key, asked if I had to do anything else to check out, and left. This stay was such a weird and disappointing experience. I have never encountered this level of poor service, mismanagement, and pure apathy before. Will not return nor recommend anyone else to stay here. read more

Must be hard to operate a restaurant kitchen. I did not think it were possible to improperly prepare Pasta Alfredo. Very simple dish with very few requirements. Last night and on multiple other attendances at the The Grand I paid $25.00 to learn that it is not only possible but perpetual. The dish arrived and I almost said to the server that you forgot the pasta... then I realized the pasta was completely submerged in the vat of "Alfredo" sauce. Which was sort of morphing in a state between liquid and solid. Some of the pasta was cooked beyond the realm of al dente (firm when bitten) and the rest was nice and crunchy. The "dinner" salad was a joke. Half of it was red Onion, a quarter was soggy carrots and a couple of large slices of inedible zucchini. Lettuce was apparently optional...four bites was it. I live in Big Timber. I have been to the Grand numerous times over the years but only when I am invited by others. Typically I have had one dinner menu choice that is not meat. Pasta Alfredo. Years of sending it back has never made a difference. I guess shame on me for giving them a second through fortieth chance. I really do not like to send a dish back to a kitchen anyway, one never knows what "special ingredient" will be included when the dish returns to the table. I am just one of many. read more

We stayed here for a work function and prior to heading out to Clydehurst Christian Ranch. Great place to stay if you don't mind a boutique feel. Clean original decor and great staff. We arrived really late and staff opened door to get us our rooms. Enjoyed breakfast and lunch at the restaurant. Basics are covered for breakfast. Had bacon and toast. Other members of my party had eggs and fruit. All were good. Service was amazing and kept the drinks full the whole time. For lunch we had the Grand Burger and fries. It was recommended and they were right. Original and delicious flavor using coffee grounds as a seasoning. I don't like coffee but loved this burger. Doesn't taste like coffee. Give it a unique flavor. When I'm Big Tibet I'll be keeping this place as a regular spot. read more

The food is good. The servers want to be good. They need to be trained. Tables sit with dirty dishes, dirty glasses and plates sit on the bar, etc. There is no efficiency at all. Biggest disappointment in Montana! Waited 20 minutes for a table, took them another 10 minutes to get our drink order after we sat down. We ordered our food at that time because we waited so long. Nobody came back for 45 minutes and still didn't have our dinner. We left without eating. The bad part was they were not busy at all. Don't bother. Go to Thirsty Turtle or Iron Star pizza. I usually time my trips around eating lunch and dinner at the Grand. I really need to rethink this in the future. My wife and I stopped for dinner recently and we were very disappointed. She ordered the Grand burger and I had the fish and chips. The Grand burger was served with a dried out bun and meat not cooked medium well/ no pink. My fish and chips was very bad. Two preformed fish patties made from some variety of fish meal that came off of a Sysco truck for $21. Seriously, this is the best The Grand could offer? If I wanted this quality I would buy a box of Mrs Paul's much cheaper than $21. The salad was very good. read more

oh boy. I know I shouldn't have had high expectations (we are in the middle of nowhere, Montana) but foolishly, I did. We arrived at around 7:00 PM, and get seated relatively fast after a waitress notices us awkwardly standing in the door. We get our drink orders in (three waters and a Manhattan) and the waters come out pretty fast. The Manhattan however, had still not appeared after about 10 minutes. The waitress came back to let us know that the manhattan only came in a double, not single (which isn't really a thing for manhattans) and before we had even confirmed that it was fine with her, someone else was already bringing the drink over. About 15-20 minutes after that, we get our food orders in. For context, there were only two other occupied tables at the time. We ordered a ribeye, potato skins, alfredo, and chicken tenders. The food didn't arrive until after 8:00 The ribeye was fine, cooked right but not overly special. The chicken tenders were good, surprisingly. The potato skins looked like they had been cooking for about 14 hours, very burnt and stuck to the bottom of the plate. The alfredo was unusually thick and had, of all things, green onions in the sauce. Creative liberties, I guess? Either way it was weird. There was just too much parmesan in it, and it made the whole dish very unappetizing. None of the waitresses seemed to know what they were doing or anything about the menu. When asked about the soup of the day, our waitress simply said "something Italian." (Additionally, they all looked to be about 14) The prices were high, but we expected that, as it is a hotel restaurant. Overall, pretty disappointing. read more

Extremely disappointing Thanksgiving dinner this year. We have a tradition of doing this dinner ever year, but we won't be back. Very few choices, food available was bland. No carving stations. The WORST hotel experience we have ever had and we have had some bad ones!! The Grand Hotel was grand, but sadly it is no longer, due to the new ownership. The new owners abandoned the hotel during our recent stay. They gave all guests a code to let themselves in the back door. We never saw an employee during our 3 day stay over the 4th of July weekend. The front door was locked the entire time. The restaurant and saloon were closed. There was no one to call for help with anything, and believe me people needed it. A guest next to us was locked inside his room because the door knob fell off his door and into to the hallway. Another older gentleman was locked out because he never got the code to the back door and was left banging on the front door. Finally another guest let him in. Unbelievable!!! The temperature of the hotel was set at 80° so you couldn't use any of the common areas. There was no cleaning service. The shower water was scalding. If you called them for a service, they never answered the phone or returned your call. In the lobby, you could constantly hear the phone ring and ring and ring. The hotel was deserted of employees and management. We checked out days early. We left messages on the phone with no reply. When we arrived home, we did send a letter to the hotel manager requesting a refund. They did honor this request, but never did they contact us. I'd like to give a shout out to the Timber Bar across the street who saved everyone. They were absolutely swamped for two nights, because they were the only place serving food. They were extremely gracious and polite even though they were busting their butts to take care of all the unexpected customers. Their food, beer and service was fantastic!!! Also, Nancy at Thistle Creek next door to the Grand served us hot, fresh, and delicious coffee and peach pie. Thank you all so much!!! read more

Good Lord we loved this place! My girlfriend and I were on a cross-country trip on our way back to our hometown for a huge high school reunion. We stopped here on a whim and ate at their restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed both the hotel and the restaurant. I'd give them 10 stars if I could. Charming, delicious, comfortable with the most friendly people. The only negative is they put us in a back room of the hotel and on Sunday night and Monday morning, their delivery guy came at 4:30 and started with the backing up of the truck with the BEEP BEEP BEEP. Super annoying but I certainly wouldn't take a star off for it. If you're going through this tiny little town, stop here. Stay here. read more

I used to love this place. Amy, their chef was always spot on and made this place a town staple. I have now given this place 3 try's since Amy's retirement, let me say that each time I have been more and more disappointed with the food. I don't know how hard it is to mess up a Caesar salad but the grand seemed to mess it up all 3 times. They must have switched vendors because the lettuce mix they are using is horrible, the so called "Caesar dressing" tasted like water and vinegar. The croutons have changed as well. And don't get me started on the fries, what used to be the perfectly cut- not to thick not too skinny- perfectly salted and crispy fries are now too thick and soggy. I hope this place can get it together because it is really losing the support of the town read more

This is a grand old hotel with lots of history. The inside has the old west decor and the old bar is spectacular. They have local cuisine along with traditional favorites. My husband and I have been staying at The Grand Hotel for over 20 years on our way between Montana and Colorado. The food has always been outstanding, Amy is the best Chef ever. Diana in the morning is a gem, she always knows what I will order and how I like my coffee. However we unfortunately were totally disappointed with this last visit and will never return The new owners have completely destroyed this beautiful iconic building. They have taken away all of the Montana feel to it and turned it into a very dark place. Raising the prices and taking away the $6.00 breakfast that was complimentary to the staying guests that used to be offered forever in the past just feels like corporate America at its best. With my dad driving from Boise ID to Rapid City SD and got this under the results for a hotel for about halfway to our destination from home. I didn't have high expectations but sometimes you get a once in a while experience that turns out better than anything like a holiday or days inn. By better than any hotel chain I mean a LOT better. This took me on a pleasant step back in history while providing me and my dad the best food I've ever had at the service of a hotel business. My dad was especially impressed with the quality. The business owners were super nice and even told us some interesting stuff about the town of Big Timber. I will definitely come back again if I'm ever traveling the I 90 through Montana read more

This is one of those places that you think twice before submitting a review, because you don't want anyone else to find out how awesome it is! We stayed a night in the hotel as we traveled from Washington to Minnesota. I wasn't sure what to expect, but came away extremely pleased. The hotel/B&B is in great shape and certainly, for such a historic place, it offers most modern comforts. And, the staff at the hotel is amazingly pleasant. Don't even consider anywhere else of staying the night in or near Big Timber. You can't beat this place. Also, if you get the chance, grab dinner at their restaurant. Food was amazing. Expertly prepared. Served beautifully. Wine list wasn't deep, but broad enough to offer many good choices. We enjoyed this place so much that we are thinking of making a destination trip just to stay at the Grand and enjoy the local surroundings. read more

Tried to have dinner in the dining room last night...not the grill/ bar side. Had a reservation at 6 p.m. for 3 people. Not crowded in the dining room but the bar side was hopping. We had read really great reviews about the grand but only now realize the reviews were of the grill/bar side. 30 minutes with our drink orders not delivered...we left. But one further note about the traffic through the dining room. Staff were running from the kitchen (sqeaky double doors) through the dining room, past tables, to get to the grill/ bar. Not just a few staff, but many, many staff. It was distracting to say the least. When a waitress kicked one of the swinging doors to the kitchen and it slammed against the wall (of course we were seated near the kitchen ) we just left. The Mint in Livingston was our next stop. An excellent overall experience and I cannot wait for my next visit. A very cozy bed and breakfast, the Grand also has a great kitchen with a surprisingly ample wine list, considering its location in Montana. The room I stayed in did not have the most comfortable of beds (a little too springy), but it really had the feel of staying at a friend's house while visiting in town. The communal bathroom facilities were nice enough, and although I thought I might have trouble in the morning with finding an available shower/bath, this fear prove unfounded. At the time (summer 08), I believe I spent around $50 a night for a double bed, which, considering it included breakfast, was a steal. In my opinion, the real draw of the Grand is its restaurant. The hearty breakfast each morning was more than satisfying, and each dinner there I thoroughly enjoyed. In all honesty, I was very impressed that a hotel/restaurant in a relatively remote place such as Big Timber could have such refinement. As previously mentioned, the wine list is surprisingly sophisticated and with a wide selection. However, I do wonder how they are storing the wines, as they seemed mostly room temperature when they were served (and this was during July). I wouldn't be surprised if their cellar was simply a large closet. Nevertheless, to even find such a selection in that part of Montana cannot be understated. The bar was also a source of great enjoyment, with friendly bartenders who really made me feel like I was at my neighborhood bar. The service throughout my stay was always responsive, polite, and friendly. I really can't wait for my next visit to this hotel befitting its name, Grand. read more

I can't believe I even need to write this review. We just experienced terrible customer service that the hotel should be ashamed of. Our wedding is in one month in Big Timber, and we have had a block of hotel rooms on hold for our wedding. I just called to check in and see how many rooms we have left and low and behold, they have been giving our rooms away to people who have nothing to do with our wedding. When I asked the hotel to please call these people back and tell them they can't have the rooms we have saved, they said no, they aren't able to take these rooms from those people. So, the hotel is not fixing THEIR mistake and now, we are unable to house certain people for our wedding. They should be ashamed of themselves. read more
