Palmyra Cafe is a friendly neighborhood restaurant in Gronland serving authentic Tamil food with a…read moretropical flavor profile that's all its own! The Masala Dosai was a crepe made from a fermented rice and uridhal (lentil) batter, served with a filling of spiced potatoes and served with dhal (lentil soup), coconut chutney, and sambar (vegetable/lentil soup) on the side. The crepe was perfectly thin and crispy, and each of the accompaniments was perfectly spiced (especially with lots of mustard seeds). I also tried the Kottu Rotti Chicken, a dish made of chopped roti flatbreads stir-fried with shredded chicken, egg, onion, and chilli. The rotis retained a chewy texture, and the meaty chicken and spices turned the boring leftovers into an exciting new dish. Even more memorable than the food, however, was our server, a new immigrant from Nepal, who made us feel right at home and made special accommodations to serve us even close to closing time. This is a great, local, small business worth supporting!

Likewise, my mom ordered the string hopper(idiyappam) with fish curry, she said the fish curry reminded her of my Achi's (grandmother) fish curry. Very authentic, delicious Tamil food!

From the second we walked into the restaurant and sat down a short Indian man with glasses kept staring at us making it very uncomfortable.. I don't know if he was trying to pick us up or what but he just kept staring at us and I even commented to my friend ..I said that guy keeps staring at us It's kind of weird. and when we were ordering drinks I said I'd like a draft beer and he told me what was on tap and I said okay that sounds good, and then my friend ordered a gin and tonic and he looked at him he kept asking "are you okay" and my friend was like what do you mean am I okay yeah I'm okay I'm fine why do you ask and he kept going like making an odd expression and moving his head and his hands around like are you okay are you okay? I think he was implying that we were both intoxicated which was the furthest thing from the truth. We haven't had a drink in weeks. This was so bizarre and this guy with the glasses, short Indian man and I took a picture of him to send to his boss accused us of either being a toxicated or I don't know what the hell he was talking about so we just got up and left. It was the most ridiculous experience I've ever had. Shame on him! I asked if I could speak with his manager and he refused and then I started talking to his other co-workers who seemed concerned about what was going on and I tried to explain to them and he kept yelling at them something like don't listen to him or blah blah blah I don't know but it sure was bizarre. Maybe it was because two guys were eating together I don't know but the whole thing was just so weird and a horrible way to leave Oslo. Go elsewhere!

You step down into the basement of an typical Oslo building and the good smell of the tandoori oven invites you already. I guess it is a also a very cozy place to for dinner (middag) Ordering is simple and can be done in Norwegian or English - for sure also in more Indian languages which I don't speak. The food tastes like in good restaurants in India and the "spiciness" is somewhere between the more moderate style in Germany and the hotter one found in the United Kingdom. On request all other "levels" would have been possible. The mango lassie was as expected and the food delicious and to the point. In case of even colder weather than the day I visited the place additional electric heaters are held ready for your convenience. Me being very picky about the excess usage of air-condition and exaggerated ventilation was helped by kindly shutting down these devices for a while - mange takk!. The lady who serves had a smile and was obviously aware that it is worthwhile working there. The toilets are clean and spacy. Go there! - is was the best Indian place I could find in Oslo so far (March 2011). smoke-free environment
