OK. This is a super short and super easy hike. It is slightly challenging if you take the direct…read moreroute straight up. Going this direction, it is paved all the way to the base of the rock formation forming the top. Going this direction is also steeper than going the opposite direction (CCW). From here, you're climbing, not hiking. But that part is pretty easy too...just be careful and stay within your limits. Perigrin falcons nest on the top rock section and this section does have a nesting closure period which I believe is summer through fall...but you should research the exact range as I'm not sure. If you keep your eyes open, you can see them most times of the year...but they're fast! You can also get to the base of the rock section forming the top, by a dirt path. The grade is easier, but the path there is longer. You'll occasionally see mountain bikes on this path, so heads up. Regardless of which path you use to get to the top, keep your eyes open (& ears a listening) for rattlesnake. I've seen them multiple times hiking this area. I've also seen numerous hikers that let their dogs run free (against park rule). It would not be a good day for your dog if it gets bitten.

There is a large parking lot that costs $5, or you can buy an annual pass that gets you into other area parks as well. It is mostly flat, mostly dirt/rock. There were a few off-shoots we could've taken. There was a porta-potty a ways in. The scenery is spectacular, with stunning rock formations, and some sections showing you the gorgeous Watson Lake. It was used by lots of walkers, a couple of joggers, several bikes, and even a horse. Fun morning.

It can be exhausting or rough, but there are plenty of benches you can stop at along the way to take a breather. As well as bring plenty of water too. You can also stop by the nearby radio towers too but can't go inside but that's good. Overall I would recommend this spot to get some air and enjoy the scenery. Just make sure to use your GPS so you don't get lost along the way.

The parking area is found at the SW intersection of Antelope Ln and N Castle Dr and is quite large. I went on a cold weekday and only saw 5 other hikers but undoubtedly this gets very busy on a weekend judging by the size of the parking lot. There is an installation of contemporary artwork of foraging deer / horses as you start the trail. The trail itself is very wide and a mix of dirt with some rock and climbs at a gradual incline all the way up. At each of the major switchbacks there are nicely maintained picnic tables offering great views of the valleys to the east and north. A handful of interpretive signs offer information about wildlife, geology and history of the hill. There are also GPS and mile markers at regular intervals. As you approach the top a few of the switchbacks are a bit steeper but the view at the top is worth it as you are now able to see the southern and western mountain ranges as well as all the way around to the east and north. A picnic table is also situated the top along with additional historical info. The top can be windy so be prepared, also this is not the best trail to take right after a rain or snow. I went two days after a snow and even though the majority of snow had melted it felt like I had an extra 2 pounds of mud on my boots at times !

She loves to see who her new friends will be each time we are there. There is also an outdoor roller rink, several ball diamonds, and pickle ball courts. People also enjoy the hiking/biking trails; and we often see horse trailers there for going out on trail rides. There are bathrooms available too.

Start on Vista Trail and Connect to the Panorama and Petroglyph trails that head up to a high point. Here you will find a nice collection of petroglyph rocks that have been found in the area and arranged for everyone to enjoy. There are also interpretive signs at the top that identify the surrounding mountains.

There several trails from this parking lot located a couple miles west of the Thumb Butte…read moreRecreation area. We did a loop of the 318, 332 and 325 trails. Portions of this hike were in valleys near drainage areas, some with paths wide enough for ATVs, though I am not sure if they are allowed. You cross through Willow Creek about a third of the way in and in February it was flowing with a small stream and was quite peaceful and lush. There are views towards Thumb Butte from the 318. Overall the is a nice, relatively easy workout close to town. The trails can be busy with cyclists and hikers, no doubt due to the easy access on a paved road and free parking. Go on a weekday if you can.

This is an excellent 1.0+ miles one way walk hike along Aspen Creek, which in winter flows nicely…read moreand includes a small waterfall and pool. The trail is easy, though have good shoes or boots if you want to hike down to the water. There is no parking at the trail head, so have someone drop you off or park at Strickland park and walk south along the road until you get to the trailhead which is just slightly north of Golf Club lane on the east side and is signposted. Do not confuse this urban creek hike with the Aspen trail further west on Copper Basin Road. This is an out and back and other than a group of school children, I didn't see anyone else on a Sunday, likely due to the lack of parking.

A parking fee is required, though it is free with a National Parks America the Beautiful pass. We went on a Monday in August just after the monsoon rains and ran into only one other hiker despite the beautiful lush vegetation, cool mushrooms and interesting geology. For a slightly longer trek, park at Cayuse and take trail 351 west through the forest, then make a loop of 350 and 349, the latter trail is the Balancing rock trail. Trail 350 is also excellent and there is an arched rock feature halfway down the trail on the east side that you do not want to miss. We had good shade most of the way despite starting a bit late at 9:30 am. There is not a lot of total elevation gain but you will have some ups and downs to get the heart rate going
