It had a gash on its head and was too small to fly. Our dog was really sad and worried for the bird. We had heard about Gold Country and how they are known to help injured animals. I searched them on Yelp and luckily they were open. With our dog and baby bird in a small Amazon box in tow, we were off! They told us that they would put the bird in an incubator and nurse it back. They gave us their email and we could contact them to check on it. We were right about it being a baby dove. We were saddened to hear that after two days, the morning dove didn't make it. It's great to know we have a place close by to take animals that have been injured or displaced. Also, we bought several Tie Dye tees to support this wonderful organization.

One stay, between Thanksgiving time and between Christmas time, they were at Grocery Outlet! I was doing Bell Ringing for Auburn Salvation Army, one gentleman asks if Salvation Army takes turkey donations! Not wanting say I just visiting Auburn, "I am somewhat new to town, Sir! However, I think is call Grocery Outlet, I saw a Food Bank truck there just last Saturday! They are taking turkey donations, I sure other food donations!" Maybe fifteen minutes later, same gentleman comes back! "Thank you, young lady! They did indeed take my turkey donations." Wow, so my information that day was correct! Thank you to Auburn Food Bank for always helping people! Glad any Food Bank that I write, glad any Salvation Army Corps that I write, used help the children in that town, in that state! This situation, children of serene, peaceful, child friendly Auburn, California! This Food Bank does a good job! I wish them best of luck!

No cc. Early February 40 degree rainstorm for days. Couldn't sleep in the box I found the first night due to violent shivering. Found the shelter and a warm place to sleep the next. We were invited to a birthday party at the Placer Nature Center. This was the first time we've…read moreever been or even heard of it. It was super easy to find. Parking was easy. The party was such a great idea. Something different. And it was a beautiful day to be outdoors. We were able to look around different rooms filled with all different things from water animals, local animals, even dinosaurs!!!! Then we went on a nature walk with scavenger hunt. Everyone was engaged and having fun! Then the kids got to check out the pond....and catch tadpoles! So fun. My daughter had such a good time, she didn't want to leave.

My youngest son had a field trip here and it was just perfect. We were bussed in and split into…read moreserval groups, each group had a different activity but in the end was able to do them all. We had a nature walk, guess who, got to check out butterflies and all the stages they go through. All staff was so informative and kept the small aged kiddos engaged!

I'm sure Seniors First still has good volunteers does good things for those in dire need. (hence…read morethe two stars) But in my opinion, (24 years as a volunteer) the management "went corporate" a few years ago when chairwoman Betty Powell left. Then a new administration took over and the non profit's financial profile (the annual budget) began to look surprisingly profitable. The budget now is in the millions, with impressive headquarters and high salaries for those at the top. It became a numbers game as "clients" were gathered that wouldn't have qualified as "shut-ins" under the old regime. Funding seemed to be the new goal, and large donors come with strings attached. We were all given free background checks, which were OK but seemed unnecessary before. Then detailed reports were required after each visit and mileage reports were required, even though I never sought the reimbursement. The most discouraging change for me was the "new" clients. I had always had clients that were truly alone and needed someone, anyone, to talk to. Those that only spoke to food delivery people (who don't have time for a conversation) and maybe the mailman...and that was IT. Seeing the joy in their faces as you arrived was perhaps the main reward and reason for my volunteering. The loss of that reward motivated my departure. My first client after "the change" was a sixty-something man recovering from an injury living in a recovery home for a few weeks before returning to his actual home. The house had multiple adults with the same status and seemed more like a fraternity house with a main living room for TV and conversation. We were both a little puzzled as to why I was there. The next client had a full time caretaker and two adult children nearby, with one moving into his house. Neither of these were shut ins, in my opinion. This client was also verbally abusive and delusional and impossible to talk to. He didn't care whether I was there or not. In my ideal world, I would have continued the very rewarding work for many years to come. I'd love to talk with some of the very high quality volunteers I met to compare notes and see if, or how many, of them also quit. Bigger numbers are needed for greater funding. But forcing the numbers of clients and volunteers upward must have a downside. Betty Powell received either a minimum stipend or worked (tirelessly) for free. I'd love to compare her pay to that of today's "CEO". And so money, once again, enters the scene and the quality of life takes its usual, sickening path downward.

My mother ended up needing some specialized care that the first facility could not do, so we started out on a second search. The second time was much more difficult because we needed to find a facility that could perform some of the additional requirements. Kristina was just awesome calling the huge number of care homes in Placer County, keeping in mind other requirements that I had requested like a good social atmosphere, aesthetics, programs, etc. Thank you so much Kristina and Seniors First for being there in my family's time of need!!!!! A woman may be in need of help…read moreand because of these comments that woman could miss out on a life changing blessing for her and her children. I lived in this facility for over a year with my children. The women who work there, the people who volunteer there, the things you learn, the love you feel. Even to this day they reach out to me, check on me, and support me when I'm in need. Acres of hope taught me SO much i wouldnt know where to begin. It's hard work and of course there are rules and it's hard to live with a bunch of women and their kids sometimes and always get along but this place is a gift from God and if you are a homeless woman, in a domestic violence situation, if you and your child need help...PLEASE reach out to them and do the work. Stay when it gets hard, stay when you want to leave, and do the work! Take it from me, it'll change your life if you want it bad enough.

My daughter is 5 and loves going to shelters to cuddle cats but we were looking for somewhere to hang out for a bit. A few weeks ago, we found this place. We brought a chapter book in, sat and cuddled cats while reading and then shopped at the thrift shop! It's really cute. It would be amazing if someone could make a little coffee kiosk with really coffee machine, espresso machine or pastries!
