Our tour guide told us this is one of the oldest places for churros and hot chocolate so we decided we had to come here. The churros were light and crispy. If you go with a few people, I recommend that you get your own plate of churros and share the chocolate as it is very thick and rich. We loved this place. Unfortunately we went there only one time because it was always crowded so we did not want to waste our time standing in line. After the holidays early in a morning we stopped by (our hotel was not far away from this place) and there was no crowd at all. So when I visited Barcelona recently, I had to try their churros with a Suiza (a rich, decadent hot chocolate served with whipped cream on top). It was a perfect mid day treat after meandering through the Gothic Quarter. The place is small and quaint. It was almost completely packed, but that's a good thing! Although their signature item is the hot chocolate, they sell xurros, and teas, and coffees, along with pastries and other assorted sweet (and even some savory) treats. I love the hot chocolate here. So delicious. Great flavor, and you can always ask for more milk if it's too much for you. Staff is nice too, a little overworked because of all the people. Be ready for a big line, although not a long wait, especially if you're looking to go on a Friday or Saturday night. Get ready also for a fair amount of noise. When we asked for a menu our waiter refused, saying that he would tell us everything then rambled off a vague list, completely forgetting to mention the churros which they are supposedly known for. The food here is very simple, but done very well. I think of it as more of a breakfast/lunch place, but they do open later in the evening as well. The cafe con leche, churros con chocolate, bikini sandwiches and various meat/cheese plates are all superb. Seating is an "every man for himself" proposition and it can be crowded at times. The wait staff are a bit aloof, but they will get to you eventually. Knowing some Spanish here is helpful, but not an absolute necessity. Saw this place on a travel TV show. They recommended the Bikini sandwich which is basically and grilled ham and cheese sandwich and the churros con chocolate which is fried dough with chocolate dipping sauce. My experience here was great! -- we came in for their infamous crema catalana and we also tried their cacaolat amb nata and they were both pretty damn good. I think that I'd like to minus one star because the crema catalana, though very traditional in preparation with the freshest ingredients possible, had a whole lot of cinnamon flavor and I was really missing out on the citrusy aspects of it. That seems so granular, but I oddly felt like I've had a better version of it elsewhere (to my liking).
