Date: 7/14/2023 Time: 11:45 AM 70° Sunny Today was a funeral service for one of my aunts. She was blessed to live to the age of 91 years old. My family and I have been to this mortuary several times in the past to pay our respect to our departed loved ones. The service was a peaceful one. Traditional Chinese music was softly playing in the background while video slide show of my aunt and her family were displayed. Poems were read by two of my nieces and memories were shared by my cousins. One of my cousins mentioned the family lived in East Oakland on 22nd Avenue in the 60's. I told him where the home was and it was a duplex. Oh, what wonderful childhood memories from over 60 years ago, and this service was a celebration of life. As always the employees are compassionate, helpful and pleasant despite the sadness of the loss of a loved one. This was personally my first time using their services although my family have used their services in the past, this is the first time I got into the essentials for doing a funeral. I met with Thomas who was very compassionate with the lost of a family member. He took about an hour and a half to explain the process with me and what traditionally a Chinese funeral would be done. I told him I was not at all knowledgeable about the Chinese tradition and he worked with me on it. He was very helpful in finding a viewing date and worked with me within my budget. He also guided me with the process of burial with a cemetery. During the service, he was very professional. We had different generations of family attending and he explained to us all what to do. My 99 year old uncle passed away and had a preneed contract set up with Grant Miller-John Cox Mortuary. I had no experience how to make funeral arrangements or what was involved. I phoned Grant Miller-John Cox to get started and was assigned family funeral director Lily Wong. Lily is not only very knowledgeable and experienced in funeral planning, but she is a compassionate and kindhearted person. Lily clearly explained the process and patiently reviewed all of my options and costs, one by one. I never realized the challenges of coordinating a full service funeral could be setting up a date and time that was available by the church, the mortuary and the cemetery. Lily coached me through it all. She walked me through filling out and submitted all the required forms for embalming, death certificate and burial permit and when they would be approved. Lily guided me through all my options like casket selection, motorcycle escort, flowers, holy cards, memorial book and dressing. I found the pricing to be very reasonable and competitive, compared to other mortuaries. Lily is very organized and efficient and gets things done without hesitation. She communicated progress and issues with me every step of the way. The end result was a funeral service that was beautiful and exceeded my expectations. When we had a close family member pass away and seeing that Grant Miller - John Cox Mortuary has someone (Jenny) who does traditional Chinese services for funerals. When a loved one passes away, this is of course a very hard and tragic time in our life, and while the funeral would be very difficult and sad, one would think that at least the funeral preparations would be taken care of and go smoothly. Unfortunately, this was not the case with Jenny at this mortuary - she was rude and unprofessional, and she always had an attitude and some sort of scowl on her face when you asked her questions, especially if you asked her what to do during the funeral (as in with the incense or what order to go in, etc.). If one of my family members/family friends did the wrong thing and made the wrong move, she would get really annoyed and aggressively tell us to fix it, which is not right because we hired her for a reason - it is because we needed guidance and help with the correct customs/traditions in the correct order as well, not for someone to get mad at us for not knowing what to do and/or doing it incorrectly. Jenny also followed us to the cemetery to help us complete/perform the Chinese traditions there. Out of all the disrespectful things she had done already during the whole funeral process - the worst thing she done was when she got all pissed off when a family member and family friend told her to be more careful and told her what to do, she aggressively tossed the floral arrangements/flowers on the ground, which was very disrespectful. This is not the kind of coordinator or funeral service worker one would want to deal/work with, especially during this tough time. I did not want to make this kind of review, especially for a mortuary, but I feel like my fellow Yelpers should know my personal experience with this place before considering to choose this place because losing a loved one is already difficult, so finding and having a good funeral service/mortuary home should be an easy and a stress free experience/process. read more

DO NOT CONSIDER GOING HERE!!! My overall experience with the funeral home was less than satisfactory, I found an employee, Jenny to be unhelpful. She appeared impatient, unwilling to answer questions, and unfortunately, didn't seem knowledgeable about Asian funeral traditions despite being labeled as a 'counselor of Asian services.' Maybe if she felt an ounce of empathy for our grieving family, I would have given this place a better rating. Sad to say but this place is starting to feel like home. I've visited this place 2 times in the past 5 months; 5 times in the past 12 years. Jenny, the lady who is in charge of the Chinese funeral service, has been nothing but amazing towards my family. She's knowledgeable about the ceremonial rituals required for the spirit to pass on to the other side, to join the rest of the ancestral spirits. Jenny is pretty patient with my family, especially with my aunt, who likes to wail somewhat uncontrollably during the ceremony. One time it got out of hand and Jenny had the politely shush her. We hired professional wailers and my aunt's voice overpowered theirs. The other day Jenny had to follow my aunt around, mopping up the flood of tears surrounding the coffin. Jenny is awesome because she takes the mystery out of the whole funeral process such as rituals, burial sites, paperwork etc. Death of a loved one is hard enough without trying to figure out what to do when a loved one passes. She makes the process much easier. Pros: 1. They have a flat screen TV for displaying pictures 2. They have a microphone for speeches Cons: 1. small parking lot 2. Men's bathroom set up is odd. Thankfully, no one was using the urinal or I would have walked in on him taking a whiz. Then again, what am I doing there in the first place? Well, I really had to go before delievering my speech and the women's bathroom was occupied. read more

My Mother passed away on April 8, 2021. Grant Miller-John Cox Mortuary was superb in the handling of My Mother's service from beginning to end. Jenny was the main coordinator in handling My Mother's traditional Chinese service. She kept me informed and directed me along the entire process. I would have been totally lost without her help at one of the most difficult times in my life. Phone calls, text messages, and scheduled meetings were always handled promptly and efficiently. The rest of the staff were in the shadows doing all that was necessary to accommodate My Mother's final wishes. Traditional Chinese burials depends on the lunar calendar that dictates which days are "good" days for conducting business. I was hoping for April 14th, Jenny along with her staff worked diligently to make that happen. Amazingly, they were able to jump over all the hurdles in a short period of time; but the cemetery was booked. The following week had only 2 "good" days; I was able to confirm the cemetery, but the mortuary was booked. Feeling my grief, disappointment, and anxiety to lay My Mother to rest, Jenny once again worked her magic and scheduled Mom's service for April 22nd (one of the "good" days). Thanks to the diligence, compassion, and professionalism of the staff at Grant Miller-John Cox Mortuary; I was able to lay My Mother to rest with the dignity and respect she so deserved. read more

This place usually holds the Asian funerals, I have been here many times, is that good or bad? I was here for the past few days and the place does need some updating, the entrance is always the side door in the driveway...... I met one of the service people there, her name was Jenny, very helpful for the families in mourning..... I can see why there isn't much made in this type of business, the garbage fees, electrical, water, geez, the overhead itself is quite expensive.....I know because I am also a business owner....... They were very courteous and also very kind in not asking for payment yet until funeral procession is over..... OPD directed traffic as usual and did a great job......... read more

We were referred to Grant-Miller by St. Mary's Cemetery. Background: We had past positive experience with Chapel of the Chimes, and expected to utilize them. Went to CofC on the day of our loved one's passing, and were extremely disappointed by their staff. After waiting 10 minutes to be greeted/acknowledged, we were told nobody was available to meet with us for 3 days! Really? Somebody just passed, and you can't meet with us for 3 days? And we feel like we are getting attitude from the front desk person? So wrong, especially when dealing with the death of a loved one. We called Grant-Miller. Jerome answered, and offered to meet with us immediately. He was kind, compassionate, and very helpful and accommodating in every detail. He made an extremely difficult time go very smoothly. I cannot say enough good about Jerome. He is just a good, kind, caring human, and is a huge asset to Grant-Miller. read more

Here is the timeline: 2/16 - My aunt passed away. I contacted our mortuary service counselor, Michael, from Grant Miller and he scheduled us to meet with him on Monday 2/19 to go over the details for my aunt's funeral 2/19 - We met with Michael at Grant Miller. He was very patient and went through all the details with us including all the religious traditions. He also gave us his work cell phone number so we could contact him for anything we need regarding the funeral that was scheduled for 3/5 2/20 I texted Michael to schedule a time when I could drop off my aunt's clothes for her funeral. Michael scheduled for 2/23. 2/23 I met with Michael to drop off my aunt's clothes. He also took the time to go through the details and the run down with me again. 2/24 I asked Michael if we could meet again on Friday to drop off other stuff that we might have forgotten for my aunt's funeral. Michael agreed to 3/2 (3 days before my aunt's funeral service). 3/2 My uncle went to Grant Miller to drop off my aunt's stuff then to find out Michael no longer works there. He was told another counselor will be taking over but did not get introduced even the counselor (Jenny) happened to be there at the same time. It is very shocking to us because no one followed up with us from Grant Miller that another counselor will be working with us on my aunt's funeral. Management is very unprofessional on working and following up with us because Michael was fired on 2/26, a week before my aunt's funeral and 5 days before our scheduled appointment but we did not get notified until my uncle showed up. I called Grant Miller to confirm that and told me another counselor, Jenny, will be taking over. Jenny took over while I was still talking to the staff there and that was the FIRST TIME I had the chance to talk to her. I was disappointed because Jenny wouldn't give me her work cell number and asked me to call Grant Miller instead. Jenny explained how experienced she is in this kind funeral but she was not able to keep track of what my uncle just dropped off at Grant Miller 2 hours ago when she happened to be there as well. She also LIED to me that she is temporary and doesn't work for them but I found her on the staff site and in the middle of the staff picture on Grant Miller's official company site. I do understand management needs time to plan and organize but this type of management is very RIDICULOUS and IRRESPONSIBLE. NO FAMILY who lost their loved ones should deserve experience and service like this because how could the family follow through the funeral that's happening in 3 days and they had to find out by themselves about this change. read more

"Every beginning has an end, so do not be sad." - my uncle, 5.02.10 On the 100th day after his youngest son passed away, my uncle learned that he had acute myeloid leukemia. He was told he had two weeks to live and 15 days later (an extra day just to spite the doctors), my uncle was gone. Again, Jenny the funeral director at Miller Grant took care of us. Her kindness and patience with my large family made it easy for us to focus on each other. When a group of mourners came in at closing time (8 pm), she made them feel welcome and never made us feel rushed. I had attended a funeral at the mortuary in San Pablo just weeks before. Yes, it's been a tough year for me. That facility is beautiful and new but there is no question, even though Miller Grant is smaller and older, it will always be my family's first choice. read more
