On my shopping local this Christmas hit list was Gravity Pope. I don't know why I'd never been in before but somehow now it's got Holy Roller next door, it feels more approachable. I've walked by the Gateway Boulevard shop window many times and admired the displays every time. Now I know the inside of the store is just as impressive. Gravity Pope is a YEG original and here to stay. Offering so many amazing designer goods that they somehow select with a unique individuality that really keeps the vibe of the store throughout. There are no bad items that drag down this places street cred. Even the sock are displayed on a cure washing line. They sell really funky sunglasses which my husband will love, I can't wait to take him with me next time. Really smart, fashionable street and work wear for bold Edmontonians. I love it. read more

I think I'm a bigger fan of Gravity Pope shoes than I am of their clothing branch. They are generally expensive to begin with, but the prices of their clothes are just ridiculously up there. I mean, $65 for a pair of nylon socks, are you kidding me? Most of their items are different from what you see at other stores, but I'm still not sure it's worth the price. They carry high-end designer brands such as Betsey Johnson and Hugo Boss. There is a wide selection in jeans, which include the Diesel brand. I think I saw some Diesel underwear for guys too ... Gravity Pope Tailored Goods also sells colognes and perfumes, along with a matching line of scented candles. The candles smelled really nice (especially the dark rum and mochito), but again, I didn't bother checking the price because I saw no point. The shop is fairly large, with another half extending past a ramp. They've got the old wooden floors that creak, and really creepy-looking dummies on either side of the entrance at the ramp. They were also playing creepy music when I was there, but I guess that's beside the main point. Maybe if most of the items weren't made in either China or Turkey, I would consider buying something on sale. But since they are, it's not even worth an exclusive Betsey Johnson dress, in my opinion. read more

Tucked a little ways off the quieter end of Whyte Ave, Gravity Pope really is something unique. It sells designer clothes but manages to maintain a very quirky, individualistic feel, with its creaky wooden floors and old alternative music. I think the brand selection here is excellent, as Gravity Pope seems to consciously avoid most of the mass market and overproduced made-in-China designer brands, and focus more upon utilitarian designer brands. The clothes are not too showy, and the focus is more upon casual pieces that one could wear over and over. They also have an interesting selection of fragrances and apothecary products which are difficult to find elsewhere. To be sure, everything here is very expensive. However, it's not as overpriced as it used to be, as they seem to align their prices more closely to each designer's webstore instead of inflating it. The staff aren't as pretentious as one might fear. They will greet you, then leave you to your own devices. Most of them seem to enjoy their jobs, which is more than you can say about Holt Renfrew. The manager is very knowledgeable and can answer almost any question you may have about a particular brand or piece. They are also able to special order items if you can't find a style or size. Their return policy isn't good - refunds on full priced items within 24 hours only, exchange for 14 days thereafter, but from my experience, they are fairly accommodating if people have quality issues with their purchase. Be careful though, as they don't offer cash or credit card refunds. To be perfectly honest, I don't think Gravity Pope is good for frequent shopping just because it's too expensive. But it's an excellent store that's a step ahead of the others, carrying unique designer brands instead of the trendy ones. All the while, they maintain a good shopping experience. read more

This is a cool store located around Whyte Ave. I really didn't realize it was there until I was walking to Artifacts and I almost walked into the wrong place. Well I decided to check it out. They have an array of items from clothes for men and women, perfumes, soaps and powders and I think some different kinds of cream also. The store smelt really nice because of the items they have in the front part of the store. Their store is actually quite large; it just keeps going and going. In the second half or back part of the store is where they keep all of their clothes. As I was walking around I notices some cool items. They have these brands of socks called Happy Socks and they're pretty colorful and they have some interesting designs; they look happy. They also have a nice collection of jeans, I believe they were skinny jeans; but they were a bit expensive. I guess you do pay a price for fashion. They did have many things on sale, including tops, pants and winter coats (these were on for over $400). I noticed these really nice bags at the very back of the store; they were very simple looking, solid colors (blue or white) with a brown strap; I think the bag was actually on sale but it was over $200. I think I need to keep saving before I can shop at this place. But a lot of their items were pretty nice. They have a really great selection of winter coats and like I said I really, really liked their jeans. The girl who was working the day I came in was really nice and super friendly. She let me look around, she told me about the sale they have going on and she answered any questions that I had. It's a good place to check out. The store is really nice and neat with nice open spaces. The large window at the front of the store really brightens the front part of the store; it's really nice. read more

This round-the-corner clothing version of the fabulous and famous Gravity Pope shoe store is similarly fabulous. The space is amazing and really fits the GP image. It's antiquey and trendy all at the same time, with creaky old wooden floors and and a gorgeous interior. I love how huge this shop is, too. It just keeps going and going! And of course, the clothes here are amazing. I'm a bag girl, and their leather totes, travel bags, and laptop bags are out-of-this world gorgeous. But for $800? I just can't do it. I love the items and brands they carry, but I have yet to purchase anything from Gravity Pope, even though I love the store. It's just too darn expensive! Call me when they have a sale. read more

Gorgeous items that I simply could never afford and I wonder how Edmontonians my age manage to keep this place in business! Gravity Pope Tailored Goods carries a full range of designer wear for both men and women, including Fred Perry, Ben Sherman, Betsey Johnson, etc. I spied a beautiful pair of quilted black leather gloves that perfectly match my favourite pair of ankle boots, picked up in the summer from Goodwill - unfortunately, at $130, they cost literally 10 times as much. Great space for this store. I love how it feels when you first walk in....the clothing is very nice and the whole atmosphere makes you want to buy everything you like. The first time that I went to GP tailor store, it stunned me with its unique old fashion creaky wooden floor and inner decoration, which made you think you were in an 1930's black and white movie. They sells all kinds of brands that are quite different from massive production. The bands are not flamboyant but consistent ,steady. Some of them may be trendy but many of them are ahead of current fashion such as the ones in Holt Renfrew a lot, no mention that they can be your lifetime collection that serves you many years. Also it focus on alternative designers across the whole world from Japan to France which you may never find in other stores in Edmonton, Canada, or even States. Personally that day I bought one dress T-shirt, three causal T-shirts, one belt and two jeans. The sales people there are helpful and patient, and once you clique with them, they become very helpful and are willing to help you choose the right cloth that fits you even it means they have to fetch many times to get you the one you want and explain every question you wanna ask. I tried almost all brands in GP and tons of clothes, the staff greeted me very much and brought me some drinks which were surely an extra perk. I spend the whole afternoon in the store and I find some very unique and splendid cloth and trousers. The only thing I dislike is when the first time I talked with the sales people, she said the discounts are 50% then turned out to be 15%. Surly it were pretty expensive already, and 50% would be a huge relief. 15% discount didn't make it much different. If I knew it in advance I would only buy one pair of Levis' jeans and two shirts in total. And that costed me almost 15 hundred at once which were a shock to me and made me feel I were shopping in Holt Renfrew. However they never give any discount above 40% and that's just for season clearance as for limited brands and quantity. Anyway you pay for what you get. I want to give it fives stars but I feel kind like being scammed, so deduce two stars and made it three. However one of the sales ladies is pretty cute and gave me soda drinks with fruits. It would be pretty difficult to suggest a way in which this boutique could be improved. The product assortment, merchandising, and store design rival the best of the best in North America (it would be hard to say that even Opening Ceremony in New York was significantly better in any way but size). Gravity Pope is really the only retailer in Alberta that consistently offers great fashion-forward product. Sorry Holt Renfrew, your tactic of buying the same labels as Gravity Pope (usually four seasons later) isn't working, because your buying staff simply does not have the eye for it! If you're shopping here, look for Ari - the guy has forgotten more about fashion than most of us could ever hope to know. read more
