This tour was a big waste of money. They don't have enough buses, so each stop takes a long time to load/unload, and if you aren't lucky enough to get a seat up top then you're stuck I. The stuffy non-air conditioned bottom. The stops are very far apart. We waited nearly half an hour for a bus and counted 4 of a competitor service ("Big Bus") go by. In the end we just walked. Also the kids had trouble getting the audio commentary to work--some of the audio jacks might need maintenance. Your mileage may vary. Oh yeah, and now we have some e-waste cheap ear buds to get rid of. We saw more than one pair on the ground during our walks. read more

The Pink Bus (Grey Line) was a great way to explore Rome! You can pre-purchase your tickets online but you can also purchase tickets at any bus stop, from one of their agents. Note that the ticket prices were actually cheaper if purchased by these agents! No need to pre-purchase! ** If you do pre-purchase your bus tickets online, you can get a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hrs ahead. We actually purchased one day passes online, but opted to request a refund; in lieu, purchasing 2 day passes from an agent at the bus stop for the same price as the one day tkt! Tip: stay on the bus for a full loop to get a preview of all the stops. Then, decide which stops you'd like to get off to explore more in depth. read more

One day in Rome and wanted to see as much as possible. The hop on hop off bus was perfect for our needs. We didn't have a reservation...just walked up to one of the many kiosks in the area and purchased a ticket. We paid $20 each (said it was $22 however). Stopped at 8 locations. ( see my attached picture for the stops). You can get off at any of the stops and get back on a different bus. There is a hop on representative at every stop, it is managed extremely well. Waiting for a bus is not bad at all as one stops every 15 minutes. Not a long wait. Headphones are provided and you plug in right at your seat. A friendly voice recording informs you of the sights. The recording has volume control and channels for different languages. For example, English was #2. It is very easy to spot the pink bus. If you stayed on the bus without stopping I believe it is an hour and a half long. Never thought I would ever do a hop on hop off bus and surprisingly I was quite pleased and impressed. read more

Great guide, but not recommended if you are on a tight schedule. Theyare not punctual and they will change your times with really short notice. First off, I want to start off saying how when the tour began, I was getting very disappointed with how it was running. This was our last day in Rome and I booked the morning tour for 9:30am, with pick up around 9am. This was strategically done to avoid the heavy crowds, and so when it finished at around 12:30pm, I would have time to do last minute errands, (souvenir shopping etc). The tour company then texted me 2 days prior that they would have to move my tour to 11:30am, (which would now end around 2:30pm). This would be smack dab in the middle of full crowds. I had no choice but to keep the tour at that point because since it was my last day, that was the only opportunity I'd have to see the Colosseum. The day of the tour came and the driver picking is up arrived a little late. Not a big deal at all, but he was not friendly. He wasn't rude or anything, he just wasn't friendly. No greeting, no good morning. He just jumped out of the van, asked if I was waiting for the Colosseum tour, and when I said yes, he motioned us to get inside. The reason I gave this a 4 star review was because of our tour guide, Rita. She was AMAZING to say the least. She was so informative, and so passionate, and very funny. She was the sunshine to what started as a cloudy day. We loved her. She ended the tour taking everyone's photos with the great colosseum background. Completely disappointed and ripped off by this company. Emailed a complaint and no reply. We were told to be at the bus stop no later than 7am as they leave at 7.15am. Multiple times we were told not to be late as the bus would leave at 7.15am without us if we were at all late. 6.35am we arrived there. We never got on a bus until after 8am, unsure what time it eventually left at all because two people were late, and supposedly didn't turn up. After the trip was booked we got a WhatsApp telling us that the Naples part of the trip is cancelled and they would give us 3.30hours at Pompeii instead of the 2 hours. Sadly we only got the 2 hours and the tour guide was in such a rush we missed so many things to see. This was something I personally wanted to see for over 10 years. The tour guide spoke 100mph, us and many others couldn't understand him. We felt like we were constantly running after the guide as he was extremely quick walking through the place in such a rush. The hotel they took us to for breakfast that we had to pay for was more than 3x times the price of anything else in Rome. Advising us to eat breakfast which we did, but not saying your getting your lunch in just over an hours time. Absolutely disappointed in everything from the start to finish in this trip and basically feel it wasn't worth the money one bit. The fact a part of the trip was cancelled and not rectified and we still got charged the full amount is disgusting. read more

We did the Vatican City, Sistine Chapel, St Peter's Bascilica skip the line tour - and let me tell you "ROBERTA" was one of the most entertaining guides we have ever used! She had so much energy and you can truly see her passion for the arts. It was a warm day in July so make sure you're prepared with water and sunscreen. Also for inside the Vatican make sure you have your shoulders covered, they are pretty strict about this. I would recommend this tour for anyone visiting Rome, I'm not a big on religion but seeing all of the ancient architecture and art was really incredible! read more

We did the Pompeii and Naples 1-day tour through Gate One with this tour agency. The day before I called to confirm pick up time and they said 730AM pick up but our paper from gate one said to come an hour earlier than assigned time 730AM for pick up. Later that night, luckily, we were in the room and received a call to be picked up at 630AM. Next day 630AM: the minivan driver was nice enough to allow all of us five minutes to grab a quick breakfast at our hotel. He dropped us off at the main tour bus at 7AM for take off. The bus then departed at 720AM. Our bus guide was Steffano and driver Luigi. The official tour guide was a lady. They were very wonderful. One hour into the ride, we stopped at a visitor resting point for coffee & toilets. 90 minutes later we arrived at Naples and this was disappointing. 45 minutes walking through the city center, looking at buildings, and back into the bus. I was expecting to be at the coastal side for a close up picture of the shore/piers! Such a waste of valuable time. Then bus ride an hour later, we arrived at a restaurant for the included lunch. It was so mediocre. But I don't expect much when anyone says lunch with guided tour is included. We stayed for an hour. Then when I thought we were going into the excavation site finally, we stopped at a seashell/ jewelry shop for 30 minutes. Honestly this can be edited out of the itinerary. POMPEII entrance site was right next to it and I wished they mentioned that so we can just start ahead on our own instead of waiting around. Suggestion: They can briefly mention this place for those who want to visit/buy and the rest can go ahead. Finally the tour started and it was quick, about 1.5 hour total at the site. Our lady guide was great - very entertaining but I wished we had more time to freely roam INSIDE the site!!! Seriously, POMPEII site is SO BIG. I felt rushed. We didn't get to enjoy everything, just briefly the main stuff. I saw skeletal bones tucked away in the corner catching nobody's attention bc it was so incognito from the ancient vases showcasing, hence, throwing people off that the rest of the room wasn't interesting. Our tour guide didn't even walked to the bones to show the group but she probably didn't know? They all briskly left that room. We didn't venture beyond the center square at the end of the three mummies. After 1.5 hrs inside, I noticed she took us to the exit for a free 20 minutes time to roam, I turned back but we were already past the no entry sign and was stopped by the security guy... luckily I had proof that I was already here and didn't mean to exit. I rushed back in and tried to take the majestic of it all in. Later I found out from the divided group, the Spanish group who came with us, saw more things we didn't see. Then after 90 minutes on the return bus, we stopped at the same resting point for 30 minutes. Then another hour into Rome. I felt this rest was unnecessary because the lady guide already gave the group that half hour post exit of Pompeii to rest/ toileting. I was okay at this point, the group were of older people and I guess they needed more rest. Here is the worst part: at the drop off from the main bus, we were personally directed to the wrong minivan driver although I asked our guide twice and he pointed to the driver who doesn't speak English. I tried to show the driver my hotel name from my phone to confirm but he just gestured for me to get on the minivan. I already felt iffy when the first passenger was dropped off bc it was not on my side of town where my hotel is. After the driver dropped off most of the people, he asked us our hotel, we replied, and he said that our hotel was not on his list! After it was just us on the minivan, he said he can't do anything about us. We reasoned that this was not on us. GREY LINE is still liable but with a language barrier it was frustrating. He offered to take us to the agency or we pay him personally to take us to the hotel. I was vexed at this point. We refused to pay more for transportation so he took us to the agency. I called their local GL phone enroute (kudos here to google voice for 1 cent/ minute or my phone bill would be outrageous) about the situation and they spoke to each other. I was feeling so sketchy because we were at the very back of the minivan and climbing over seats to try to give my phone to the driver so he can talk with GREY LINE rep. First they said we ourselves asked to be dropped off with this group on that side of town, no we did not. Then at the agency, they said we went to the wrong driver, no we did not because we were pointed to him witnessed by other tourists. GL did step up and provided us a taxi to our hotel. Communication with the rep on the phone helped but the people at the agency didn't initiate to talk to us so I had to be cautious and asked everything twice for insurance. read more

Upon our last stop in Italy, we only had an evening in Rome. Wanting to see something of the City, we dialed up these guys. This review is for the "Rome by night" bus tour (sans dinner). One cavaet I will add is, i'm not big on bus tours, as pictures are typically hard to come by (unless you have a great camera). We drove by all the typical sights (Forum, Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica, Trevi Fountain & Vatican from a distance). Got to step off the bus @ Trevi, Colosseum & Trastevere which was our drop off point (or hotel was outside of city center). Colosseum was absolutely amazing, even though we didn't get to go in, just seeing such a masterpiece in person was awesome. My reason for the downgrade is there was quite a bit of walking. I didn't so much mind, but some older folks on our tour were quite annoyed & understandably so. That would be my heads up for this tour -- definitely inquire about that. Other than that, the guide was very knowledgeable & the tour gave a flavor of Rome. As they say, Rome wasn't built in a day & certainly can't be covered in one (much less an evening). We purchased a tour on Get Your Guide for the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill. Elize (sp?) was fabulous. Probably one of the best tour guides I've ever had. She was so knowledgeable and thorough, and she was super about making sure we saw everything. Something to know if you tour in winter- they close the forum to tourists at 3:30- so even if you're in line, you don't get to go in. Luckily, our guide got is in just as the gates were closing. Also, they will start to shoo you out at 4:15- even though you have until 4:30. But I still prefer the winter, since it's not hot. I wouldn't want to do it in the rain (you'll be slogging through mud). There is an elevator at the Colosseum for the handicapped- make sure you use it! The stairs are difficult. read more

After purchasing the Rome in a Day tour which included a morning at the Vatican exploring the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basillica, and the shops in within the Vatican, and an afternoon exploring the Colosseum thru Expedia the instructions on where to meet were vague. We followed the instructions, walked 20 minutes to the "meeting point" and found out we were in the wrong spot. We were lucky though and were able to catch a ride to the correct location. It was 8am, and am so glad it worked out! Our tour guide for the morning session was very informative, but damn his accent was heavy! I am not an ignorant American, and expect everyone to k ow perfect English abroad, but when you are a tour guide, I do hold you to a certain standard. We were expected to get to the Colosseum on our own, and with the half ass metro directions, we decided to use our hop on/off bus tour guide to get us there faster. We found our pick up spot and we were on our way. Our afternoon guide's English was perfect and more energetic foe this forever day. He had great stories and information about Roman history, gladiators, and we got to take some great pictures! I booked an "Ancient Rome Walking Tour: Colosseum & Roman Forum" but then needed to cancel. How to cancel is not explained well at all. The voice system of the "main office" phone number says to call the local office. The local office says to contact the main office. I could not speak to a service representative on the phone for the central office in the USA but I have to say that I did get a response after a few days by email that they had process my cancellation and refund. read more

Ruined my trip to the Colosseum. The Tour started off great at the Vatican. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, I have no complaints here. The nightmare started when we got to the Colosseum. We were told to be at the meeting spot 30 minutes prior to the start of the tour. We were there over an hour early. Upon checking in we were told the English tour was closed and that they would issue us a refund and give us tickets to tour on our own, and our join the Spanish group. Not knowing where to walk etc we just followed the Spanish group (the tour guide was very nice but unfortunately the 4 of us not knowing and Spanish could not understand anything that was being said). After arriving back to the Stated I contacted the company and they have a multitude of excuses to why we couldn't receive a refund, 1. They said we took the tour in English, after showing Videos to Expedia showing that the tour guide was speaking Spanish they came back and said 2. We arrived late and the English tour had already left, we then emailed pictures with time stamps showing we arrived over an hour earlier. Now they are unresponsive regarding our partial refund for the second part of the tour. I would highly recommend finding another tour company to avoid ruining your tour as this did to ours. The vast knowledge of this Art Historian has influenced the knowledge and thinking of myself (NYC DOE Educator, husband(Retired NYPD) and two teens who both attend Catholic HS. The worst. I'd ask them for my money. They are not even close to following the map they hand out. What a mess. In my mind they are charging each person and playing the game how long will it take to lose this customer in Rome. For the Trevi Fountain we had to walk from what they said was stop 9 but it was not more like 8.5. We actually got dropped off at least a 15 minute brisk walk away. I would love to rate higher, but unfortunately, my 1st tour was perfect, but not the 2nd. 1st thing I would say is that Grayline is making money by saying "skip the line" and "combo tour" but it's not really the case. It's just 2 separate tours. You get to the meeting point for the Vatican, see everything, then if you don't book lunch with them, you're totally on your own and the tour is over!! We had maybe 2 or 3 hours to get to Colosseum on our own. I had to ask several people for train directions. We ended up taking a taxi since they just leave you on your own. So really it's not a combo tour. It is simply 2 tours booked together. The 1st guide Rita was great and it is only because of her, that I gave the 3 stars. She waited for all group members, walked at a pace to make sure we were all together, stopped periodically, kept asking for my party of "cinco," gave useful and relevant information. Her pacing was perfect and she kept her tour engaged. No one was bored and we all had a great/interesting time. She was very pleasant. We were left in (of course) the souvenir shop, where she gets commission for any purchases. We made our way to the Colosseum tour and ate lunch on our own in the restaurant right across the street. Our tour was on August 20th and the meeting point was the Constantine Arch at 2:15. This tour was terrible. What Grayline does not tell you is you see the Colosseum 4 hours later! There is so much walking & up and down stairs. Our guide was HORRIBLE! She was in a race the whole time! Group members kept getting lost bc her pacing was too fast. She did not keep checking on us like Rita did. In fact, I had to go up to her and say "Other groups are getting in front of us, you need to slow down and check bc people are getting lost." Her response was " I check periodically." She also did not consistently hold the flag up the way Rita did. Anyhow, I don't know what was worse, the layout/logistics of the Colosseum tour or the tour guide herself. We could not go straight to the Colosseum, we had to wait for her and had to go all together. So 3 hours walking around the grounds. Her tour was miserable. Had she known how to properly assess us and look at our faces, she would have saw we were ALL BORED . People had no energy and were looking to sit down. She rambled on and on about making cement and even the water in Rome. It would be useful if she spoke about more engaging topics like the Gladiators, told us what the Colosseum was used for, how long did it take to build etc. When we finally arrives at the Colosseum, we had to stand near the stairs/elevator for about 30 minutes in the middle of a large hall and eveyone kept wondering, "WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?" We were in the way and all other traffic was trying to get through us. Total nightmare. Needless to say, we finally got in and took our pix. And I kid you not, we left early. I handed in our radios and headsets and said we had to go. She would have kept us there another 45 minutes rambling before taking us to a souvenir shop. My advice is split the tours in 2 days and just get up early enough so that lines will not present an issue. Grayline is making money by claiming "all day tour" or "9 hour" tour. But this is nonsense! She has to purposely go slow and stall to stretch the tour out! Waste of several hours. But who knows maybe if she was better at her job, it would not have been so awful. read more

When we got there our name was on the English tour but they kept giving us a hard time and send us to the Spanish group. We where trying to figure out our situation for over an hour! They have very strict timings, which I totally understand and have no issues with. However, upon leaving my hotel which was on a very tight one way road like most in Rome, we got stuck in our taxi due to some accident or something that had occurred ahead. I knew I was going to be late and I totally understand responsibility for this lies on me. However, I called Carrani Tours (the company name) and I informed them I would be 10 minutes late. The operator on the phone told me that's absolutely no problem and that she would let the staff know. I got there a few minutes before this time and there was no one there at the meeting point. So I call again, I am placed on hold for over 15 minutes whilst the operator says she will check with the staff. In the end the call was disconnected. The bar staff at the meeting point had another direct number and was very nice to pass me his phone and call the number for me. Upon speaking to another operator I was told that now I was far too late and the only option was to complete the afternoon tour today and come back for the Vatican tour tomorrow morning and that my name would be on the list. I was not happy with this as I had just paid nearly 15 euros for a taxi ride for no reason when I could've turned around and stayed in the hotel room if they had instructed me correctly when I called initially. None the less I complete the afternoon tour, the tour guide Gabrielle, herself was lovely, not a very good tour guide as I found her very boring but overall it was a nice time in the Colloseum and Roman forums. The next morning I caught a taxi again to the meet up point, I am well on time this time but what do I find once getting there? Our names are not on the list, first they point blank refused and demanded I pay for the whole tour. After I explained the situation, they checked with the operators who had no record of either calls from the day before! They falsely accused me of making the stuff up until I showed them the call logs on my phone as proof that I had called several times! The staff are extremely rude and very off putting. One said if you want to go pay 20 euros each for entry into the Vatican and that's better for us as we won't be charged for the full tour again. When I complained she spoke in Italian to the operator telling them to make me pay the 40 Euros. She passed me the phone and the operator was adamant there was no record of any calls, nothing could be done and that either I paid 40 Euros or I left. The tour in itself was paid in full before going so because of their incompetency and rudeness I was forced to pay another 40 Euros. What added injury to insult was the fact that after receiving the tickets, the price was actually 17.50 euros and so they should have only charged me 35 euros. This tour guide Linda was absolutely brilliant, very lovely woman and very enthusiastic. It was brilliant learning the history of the Vatican with her. I booked this tour through Expedia and that's why I trusted the booking but even after contacting Expedia, who got in touch with the company they argued that I was lying and that they would not refund any amount of the tour. In summary, Make sure you are on time. The tour guides are lovely but the company in itself is horrendous. Very rude staff and very poor customer service. As long as you don't have to contact them with any problems you will have a great time. If you do need to contact them be sure to take a name and maybe even record the calls as evidence. They will say anything, not keep a record and then deny all knowledge at your expense! Personally, I think it is much cheaper to book skip the line tickets to avoid queues but to download apps which give you all the main information for free anyway. This way you can spend time looking at the things that interest you and skip things that don't. The tours are on tight schedules so a lot is missed out, not many opportunities to take pictures and feels more like a school trip than a nice glance around. read more

Small-Group Cooking Lesson in Roman Countryside. This got us out of the city and out to a quiet, intimate little town with tiny winding passages, crisp fresh air, and a feel of the past. We shopped for meat and vegetables to make our lunch then retired to a little apartment overlooking the mountains and stream to cook. I booked the Vatican /Colloseum skip the line tours through Tours4fun. Our flight was delayed 24 hours & we were not going to make the tour, so the concierge at our hotel called the emergency number on our confirmation. He talked to a woman at Gray Line and explained the situation. She told him, no problem, she'd change our tour to the next day and confirmed it with him. The day of the tour we got up early and took the train to Rome, only to find out that they would not honor the new reservation and would not refund our money. My suggestion to never use Gray Line or Tours4Fun. They are both a rip off. read more
