I bought 3 gallons of stain. I only used two and returned the other. The employees in the store agreed I bought it from them. But would not return my money because I did not have my receipt. They do this to make money and hope you cant return it. I have done 20 years worth of business with them and Im done. This was a open attempt to make money because I lost my receipt. It is shameful, because they admit I bought it there. I would never use them again. So for a 80.00 can of paint they lost my business, which will cost them more than refunding my money. I should have read the reviews first... I sent my contractor there to get some premium boards for a deck, and they claimed they didnt have the boards I was looking for, and sold him some crappy framing wood, with knots, etc. Plus they wouldnt take my charge card over the phone. Returning the wood, they wanted a 15% restocking charge, but they sold me the wrong wood. Turns out they didnt charge me, so appreciated that part. Went to Pinnacle, they took my card over the phone and we got a better grade of boards. read more

Just moved into the area, and needed to get a wooden closet rod cut down to fit. Every lumber yard has a saw for ripping down plywood, etc so I thought I'd pop in, grab a few other items, and see if they'd help the new neighbor out. Perfectly willing to pay if needed, a 2 second job. Grumpy old man behind the counter told me I could buy a saw but that was the only option. "I'm not going to pull people in the yard off their work for just that". It wasn't exactly rocket science, I would have gladly done it myself but he couldn't be bothered (neither could the 3 or 4 other people just standing around behind the counter shooting the breeze). Older, established places like this get away with charging more because they're supposed to be THE place with expert knowledge, professional staff, etc and people go there because they don't want to deal with oblivious teenage workers, but they couldn't be bothered with a friendly request from someone who just moved into town. A small kindness goes a long way. I went home, unpacked my jigsaw, and did it myself later that day. Big deal. If you're not a big contractor I wouldn't waste my time here, and having worked at two home improvement stores myself I'm a little sad to say you'll probably be better off at Home Depot. We all know basic service and decency is dead in retail, and if you're not doing it better than the big box stores then you'd better compete on price. Good luck with that here. read more

We first found Gray Lumber Company when we needed a very specific, hard-to-find cedar siding material. I think they were the only company that had it available, so we really lucked out. Around the same time, we were looking for a new front door, so we decided to ask them about some options--that's when I first got in touch with Christine. I think I checked in with her first in early 2022, and she responded super quickly with a quote for what I was looking for as well as several other options. We ended up putting it off and checking back in with her about a very specific door model we liked several months later, and she was still quick to respond and helped us figure out all the details for it. Christine was incredibly organized, and really informed and knowledgable about the different door varieties and details involved in ordering one. Honestly, she was the entire reason we chose to continue with Gray Lumber Company instead of the others we looked at. They weren't the lowest quote, but they were the most professional and when we went to visit the store, they just had a really nice vibe. The whole team, from the people at the desk downstairs to the staff upstairs--everyone was friendly and greeted us quickly which made such a comfy/trusting first impression. Christine was also really communicative when the door was delayed (only a few days), which was super nice because I had an installer scheduled shortly after the expected delivery and needed to make sure the door was available for that appointment. In the past, I've had to follow up myself to confirm details, but with Christine, I could trust that she'd keep an eye on it and make sure things went well. When we brought the door home, it was in perfect condition, and we're beyond happy with it now that it's installed. The sizing and everything are just perfect, thanks to Christine. I had a deck built last fall and my contractor ordered the lumber and Dry Space (under deck waterproofing) material from Gray Lumber. The deck was completed October 1st, and I decided to find someone with experience to install the under-deck waterproofing. About 4 weeks later I found a contractor that came out and determined that the material that was delivered was the wrong size. Specifically, the panels were supposed to be 16 inches wide and 12 feet long, but they were 12 inches wide and 16 feet long. I immediately contacted Gray Lumber. I spoke to the salesperson (Blake) responsible for the order and he found that the order to the vendor was correct, but the wrong size was sent. However, he said that since the Dry Space material was a special-order item and that too much time had passed since the material was ordered/delivered, it could not be returned/refunded. I pointed out that he was supposed to verify the order before it was delivered to my home but apparently, he did not. I asked him to have the store manager call me to discuss. When I did not receive a call by late morning, I decided to call back and ask to speak to the manager. I did, and after he researched the issue and spoke to the owner of Gray Lumber, he agreed that I should not be responsible for the error and that he would have Blake work with me to take care of the issue. Blake came to my home the next day and took pictures of the boxed material. I asked when I should expect them to pick up the material, he said he would be out with the vendor the next day. By early afternoon the next day I had not heard from Blake so I called and asked when they were planning to come over to pick up the material. He then informed me that the vendor would not accept the material and there would be no refund because the boxes were not in pristine condition. Seriously? The boxes (3) had little dirt on them and they had been opened on one end. I asked him when he was intending to let me know this, he stated that he had contacted his customer (my deck contractor) to let him know of the issue. I again asked why he hadn't contacted me since I was the person who is in possession of the material and he had been working with me up to that point. He said that my contractor's name was on the order and that he had emailed him and was waiting for a response. I was completely frustrated at this point, and ended the conversation. A few weeks later after sending a demand letter and receiving no response, I filed a small claims lawsuit. Within days, to my surprise I received a refund (forwarded to me from my contractor). I would definitely not recommend doing business with this company. read more

I really want to support the local businesses, but Gray Lumber's policies are such that I can't support them. First: the restocking fee. It's a minimum of 15% (and at times higher, based on other reviews). It's not noticeably posted by the cash register. The first time I heard of it, it was when I received my receipt and noticed it mentioned. What project involving a hardware store doesn't involve returns? Gray Lumber can charge the restocking fee, but I don't have to ever shop there again. (They also keep the tax that was paid on the 15% they don't return, so from what you paid, you don't get back 16.5%. Hopefully they're sending the money charged as tax to the Washington State Revenue department; if they're not, they're breaking the law.) Second: If I'm going to pay a premium price for lumber, I expect a premium product. As mentioned by other reviewers, Gray Lumber's quality isn't always good, and unlike HD or Lowe's, you don't get to select your lumber. I bought a piece of (roughly 1.5x 2.25") moulding - it should have been straight. The first piece that was brought out was really curved, to the point of being unusable - it wasn't going to straighten out. So he took it back, and I had to wait for him to bring another piece. I was wondering if contractors got to make returns without the restocking fee - apparently not, based on other reviews. I don't understand why any contractor would use this business. First and Last time doing business with Gray Lumber! We built an 1100 sq. ft. shop in the fall of 2020 when lumber prices were high due to COVID. The plans were professionally drawn and engineered. We submitted the plans to Gray Lumber and paid $143.26 for an estimate on the lumber package. We had the material delivered in two drop offs and paid the applicable truck charges. When the building was completed and the waste was removed (about 10%), we had enough new material remaining to add another 30% to the building. As we had paid to have the amount of material estimated we were surprised at the amount of remaining material and hardware. Some of the material was not even called out on the drawing. We contacted our project manager Max and explained the situation. He said there would be a 30% restocking fee. We asked to negotiate the restocking fee as they had caused the oversupply. All items have been protected from the weather and are in excellent condition. We submitted an itemized list and pictures to Max - he said he could get back to us. No response We called back to Max and he said that now the restocking fee would be 50%. We ended up hanging up on that call. We called and asked for a store manager, who ended up sending us back to Max. No results. Called back and asked for a store manager. We repeated our story and he sent us to the voicemail for one of the store owners. The voicemail from the owner is as follows: "This is Mac Gray and today is 1 -22 - 2021. Get it? 2, 2. So, for today we are charging double (heh heh)." We left a message on his voicemail and did not hear back from Mac Gray. We called again and talked to a store manager, Derek, and he said he would investigate. The end result is that we are on the hook for a 30% restocking fee. In my opinion - Horrible Service and Poor Communication.. Seems to be consistent with other reviews. I rented a Budget truck to pick up what I needed and was told over the phone three times that it was available at their store. Needless to say, it wasn't. The salesman was quick to get me off the phone vs ask questions to understand and get it right. So, I just finished a phone call with the sales man, whose communication and service is poor. Guess my order was too small. I asked where was he getting my molding from and he said "why would you want to know that? I replied "why wouldn't I"? Maybe he was concerned I'd go to them. He said "this is not going to work out and we will credit your card. I said 'perfect". This is a review from an experience I had a month ago. I had come into the store to purchase a miter bit for my router and was at first happy with my ability to find it, but was soon greatly disapointed. After spending almost $50 on this bit, a stand of shirts in the same brand of my favorite european work pants, were on a display next to the register area and caught my eye. I asked if they carried the pants and was directed to the apparel isle. As myself and a cowerker were looking at what they had, I noticed an older man wearing a Grey lumber apron watching us. I got a uneasy feeling as I turned to walk towards an isle in his vecinity he made a quick movement to act like he was "checking" a product. This classic form of racism went unnoticed by my caucasian coworker but forced me to quickly leave the store in disgust. NEVER AGAIN! We ordered about $3000 in lumber from Gray and it was a terrible experience! Their communication was horrible and their lumber was worse! It must have taken them a long time to find every junk piece of lumber they had to fill our order. Almost every piece they sent was split, had bark on the edges, big chunks missing, or had the lack of wood on the corners all along the length of a piece of lumber. They also sent us the wrong siding and then charged us a 15% restocking fee to return it! We figured we should buy our lumber from a lumber yard to get high quality wood...Huh! What a joke! I really wanted them to do their best, they just didn't. I was doing an addition on my house and gave them a call. They said stop on in and they would get someone to help. I came by later that day and met with one of their residential sales reps. We had an awesome conversation, I gave him some blueprints and we went over everything. He had a ton of knowledge and we walked through everything that they could quote me on. He asked if I had gone to any of his competitors to get bids and I said no, I was only talking to them. I advised him of my time constraints and urgency to get pricing so I could get permits and such. He said he would have it done next week, due to current backlogs. I was agreeable and left. I got home and emailed him copies of my blueprints to ensure he had everything he needed. A week went by and no word. I emailed and nothing. I called the next Monday and talked to him. He said he would work to get it in the system and back to me by Wed. Wed came and went and no word. I emailed and called with no response. Maybe my $10k in building supplies wasn't high enough on the bar to be a customer. It has been over a month and still nothing. Good thing there are other businesses in this area to work with. read more

They lost an on-going customer and future recommendations with their attitude and service. I have a remodel starting in two weeks. They aren't getting a single 2x4 or nail. I have 25 years of experience in construction with 15 of those as a General Contractor, so I've dealt with a lot of lumber yards over the years. Most have been pretty good. My problems with Gray started when the salesman added a delivery charge of $75 to my order. The work site was probably only 1 mile from their office. The first I heard of the extra charge was when he was finishing writing up my order. I have never paid for a lumber delivery before with any lumber yard, so this was a surprise to me. I have since found out that over the years this has become common tactic for lumberyards to pad their prices. I will also temper this with the fact that I had a good driver, and he actually helped offload and stack all of the materials rather than just dumping them in the alley for me to move. Anyhow, off to a rough start. The second problem was the salesman added on a 'Bank Processing Fee' to the transaction. Really? They didn't charge me 2% when I spend $20 at the front desk, but I spend $800 and they add a 2% surcharge. When I was contracting, I got a 2% discount for paying my bill by the 10th of the following month, not a 2% surcharge for paying in advance. OK, I'm not happy, but I went ahead and ordered everything just to keep things moving, and we scheduled the delivery for noon on Friday. Ok, now it's 12:25 on Friday. I call to see if the truck is on it's way yet. No. It won't be until after 2 pm. I say that doesn't work for me. I forget his exact words, but it was to the effect of 'Tuff, we're slammed, and you're not getting it until after 2pm.' Now that's a great response. As if I had nothing to do but sit around waiting for a delivery. Why couldn't he have said something like, 'We're sorry for not calling you and letting you know that we're running a couple of hours behind. Is that OK or can we reschedule for a better time?'. In fact, if you're talking customer service, when they discovered they were running that late, why couldn't they take 5 minutes and call the downstream deliveries to let them know. And yes, they could have rescheduled for a better time. Well, when I got the tuff response, I said fine. Cancel the order. I'm not sitting here waiting for it, and I'm not going to have it dumped in the middle of an alley with no one around for hours. The response - 'You can't cancel the order'. I go huh? He responds: 'You'll have to talk to your salesman'. OK, give me the salesman. Salesman, Max, 'you can't cancel the order. If you do we'll have to charge you a 30% restocking fee.' I respond I won't pay the restocking fee. The materials haven't even left your yard yet for delivery. I'll go buy them somewhere else. On top of that who has heard of a 30% restock fee. I have typically seen restock fees in the 10-15% range. 30% for restocking is outrageous. He insists he will charge me 30% if I cancel, also adding in a comment of 'you can go buy the cheap stuff at Home Depot or Lowes, because we sell quality here." Really? You make a comment like that to a customer? Do you really know what you're selling? You might stock more of the higher grades of lumber than the box stores do, but a Simpson bracket it still a Simpson bracket, a 2&Btr Fir is still a 2&Btr Fir no matter where you buy it. On top of that, he probably didn't know that I don't like buying lumber at the box stores, because I don't like their selection. What you should be selling is service & selection. Can you say Failure? I finally got delivery the following morning. Salesman said it would be the first delivery, around 9 am. It did show around 9am like he stated. I did find it interesting that it was actually the driver's second delivery for the day. Is it a matter of honesty, or the salesman just plain not knowing what he was talking about? read more

This business needs an overhaul. I called at 4:25 to confirm hours, they close at 5pm. I talked to a live human being who confirmed, yes, they close at 5pm. We went straight to the 6th ave location, met with locked gates at 4:45. I called the live human being, and she confirmed that they close at 5pm. I told her about the gates locked, so she transferred me to a voicemail. I called again. 5pm means 5pm, right??? All we need to do was see a color of composite decking before ordering. Management; please advertise your hours to reflect your reality, because taking an hour off of work to meet with a locked gate was really upsetting. I have learned to stay away from gray lumber after terrible customer service on placing a large order on tiger wood decking 3 years previous. Also, most smaller business in the area don't have many positive things to say about Chrissy. What brought me there was the Festool domino they had advertised for $959.99. I buy all my high end Festool from summer woodworking because they are very knowledgeable and helpful. Dennis helps me out , is initially nice as I asked him to unlock the product as I would like to purchase. keep in mind this is THE ONLY FESTOOL on-site . They must have lost their contract with Festool. He rings it up and it's now just shy of $1200.00 I explain even with tax at 10% there's no way. Dennis responds "well Festool sets the price and must have increased it", Most people would probably say ok fine but I'm a carpenter and have a shop full of Festool. They increase prices once a year and it's usually in the springtime. There is also plenty of notice. I explain this . Now Chrissy response "sir this isn't Home Depot or Lowe's" no idea what she was implying , she kept saying that's the price it is what it is, Festool controls the price and they increased it. I explained no that's not true , tried to explain MAP pricing and realized as Chrissy for more and more frustrated with me that I'd just call up the local Festool rep. I got him on the phone and started explaining to him what was going on. He said he would call the location, about that time Dennis walks over and acts like what are you doing? It's ready , we are honoring the price and flips it back around on me like I'm making a big deal out of nothing. Like they were going to honor the price the whole time. Now there're acting condescending, I simply say if that was your plan from the beginning why wouldn't you have said that, how you guys handled this situation was terrible. Had I ever treated my customers this way I wouldn't have any. People would write terrible reviews about me. Chrissy stands up and says "are you threatening me?" I ask threaten you about what?? She starts acting like a victim so customers that had just walked in hear her saying I'm threatening her!!! So manipulating. I was in shock. I bought my $1000 dollar tool and walked out. Don't expect customer service , don't expect anything extra. Chrissy has a huge chip on her shoulder , if she doesn't know about a particular tool, item, sale rather than admit she is not familiar with it but would be happy to find out she would rather act like she knows about, give you wrong information or point you in the wrong direction. If you're a working on a carpentry project, this is where you go. Their prices are fair, and their products are significantly better than what you will get at a big box stores. Their employee turnover is extremely low - I've been going there for years and its the same people - and they know their stuff. Many times they remind me that I need something that is not on my list, because they know the items I am purchasing will require it. That would never happen anywhere else. The selection is a little different: They don't have everything the big box stores do, but they are set of for building an remodeling contractors have every type of framing and siding you could ever need, but just the basics for specialty items like plumbing and electrical. I purchased about 6k in custom cabinets from Gray. It wasn't a large or difficult order, but it took four different deliveries to get the order materials because they kept forgetting items and we had to REORDER doors and drawer fronts because they were painted so badly the first time around. The original order didn't have the cabinet sides, had the wrong configuration of one cabinet, and had no hardware included. They said a credit would be given because of all the rework and extra time required by my contractor, but refused to provide an updated invoice. Then, while I was trying to pay them, they wouldn't take a credit card over the phone. When I said that they were difficult to work with and a lot had been messed up, Melinda got very rude and said she had done nothing wrong, even though she had managed the whole order. I tried to explain that i wasn't attacking her personally, that I'm a customer trying to record a complaint and she just kept cutting me off. I eventually hung up because I couldn't get a word in. Had lots of problems with these guys! Had a big order, $11,000 for a new deck and cover and they delivered it with no dolly, to be dumped in my driveway, composite decking! Then they didn't tell me the screws I needed to put the deck together weren't included in the delivery cause it takes 4 days to get them. Then they sent terrible cracked 6x6s that I couldn't use. Then when I tried to get a refund for skylights that weren't delivered and other material I had returned, it took about a month... First no one would call back, then they said the check was coming soon, then finally after a 4th call, they actually cut and mailed the rebate check... Not helpful at all :( read more

From a contractors point of view Gray lumber is a "quantity not quality" lumber store. They will sell you cull lumber to an unsuspecting customer so beware. Gray sent way too much lumber for a project I was working on. I called the salesman who did the take off and he said, no problem, bring it back and we will only charge you a 10% restocking fee. WHAT!!!! You are charging me? I called Steve Gray and he said, what do you want me to do about it? Unbelivable. I've been shopping at Gray on and off for 35 years and have spent close to a million dollars here, that was the last straw. There's a lumber yard in Fife that treats you with respect and has no restocking fee and has good quality lumber, this is where I spend my money. read more

I've been shopping at Gray Lumber for years. They're BY FAR the best lumber company in Pierce County. They have the advantage of being big enough that their pricing is very competitive, but they're small enough that they really focus on customer service. Their staff is very knowledgeable and most of them have been working there for years. In my line of work, I use lots of random supply-houses to get appliances, fixtures, etc. In most cases, if you're not a "regular" at these places, or you don't know if the part you're looking for is a "bushing, ferrule or round copper disk thingy" they'll treat you like an idiot and you're wasting their time. I've found the people at Gray Lumber are always helpful and they're very good at talking to average homeowners that aren't in construction for a living. They've got almost any type of building material you can imagine in their yard. They also have a half-dozen forklift drivers pulling material in their yard and they load your truck for free. We are very lucky to have such a great family-owned lumber company right in the middle of Tacoma. I just hope they're around for another 100 years. read more

I've done a decent amount of shopping here for tools and repair parts, but most recently I went in simply to get keys made. Everyone I've dealt with is super friendly, the keys are made in 3 minutes and cost about two bucks, and they have free coffee! All in all, I can't really speak to the more important elements of the services they provide, unfortunately, but a friendly staff and fast, efficient service in the simpler of requests certainly suggests that if it ever comes to be that I need lumber/fixtures-windows-doors and the like, this place will be a good spot to go! read more

The framing material blows the big stores out of the water Doug fir in all sizes and specialty hardware with people with knowledge of new tech for building industry. They excel at what they do. And what they do is lumber. Customer service personnel are knowledgeable, friendly, prompt, and courteous. They also carry a great deal of contractor grade and contractor type materials. I'm grateful for them: I needed a 6x6x8 Douglas fir curb for a piece of equipment I am mounting on a roof, and they were the only shop in town that had What I needed.
