This place has gotten really crappy in the past few years. Selling over priced junk that we could get at Walmart for 1/3 cost if wanted, or selling crap quality lumber for 2-4x more than Gray Lumber just down the road on 6th ave. Probably has something to do with them being sold 9 years ago. The intelligence of the people who work at the store is something that I don't know how to measure it or rate it. The people here look at you like they are a deer jumping in front of your car about to get ran over. If that gives you an idea how dumb the people are who work here! Just went to mclendons to get a few annuals. I Asked where the boxes were. She pointed to the stack of flat cardboard. "Put them together yourself " Went to pay and the cashier leaned on one elbow the whole time. A man with seniority in the nursery was "training" about 5 high schoolers (probably their first job)to rotate the plants. He was so mean to them. I wanted to slap his arrogant face. Today was a frustrating day for me at the checkout stand. I usually have great service and am familiar with a few of the personable checkout ladies. Today however, I was trying to get going and get busy so I opted not to wait for one of my favorite clerks. The young lady was new and when I showed her the piece of 10 foot EMT and I told her it was missing its barcode panel. She told me she couldn't help me. She didn't want to try and look it up. I had already been waiting in line a few minutes, the other clerk was involved with a long transaction and I want to get underway with my project. The young lady just flat out refused to help me so I was forced to stand in line and wait for the other clerk to finish with her complex transaction. The second clerk looked at what I was buying, looked it up in her data base and got me checked out quickly. I'm hoping that McClendons does a better job of training their clerks and they get familiar with the product lines. It is a hardware store and there is a lot of stuff. Very impressed with the customer service. As a first time shopper at McLendon's with a very large to-buy list, each employee I encountered knew where the most obscure items could be found, by aisle number. The seasonal items manager (a name starting with A, can't remember) was sooo awesome! She helped us with a Traeger grill offering an assembled or boxed option at the same price. Outdoor flowers are super healthy and reasonably priced. McLendon's offers a 10% military discount for all regular priced items. We will be back now that we live in the area!! read more

Stopped in today to buy 3 tomato cages. I don't usually shop at this store so I don't know where anything is. I headed to the garden department and walked around for a bit but couldn't find the tomato cages. I saw an employee just outside the door who was watering some plants and I when I approached her with an "excuse me" she snapped her head and said "Yeah?" in a pretty rude way. I asked what I was looking for and she directed me to an aisle. I went in but still couldn't find it. I saw another employee and I asked her about the tomato cages. She kind of rudely told me they were outside "by the tomatoes" the last part she said condescendingly. Anyway, finally found the dang tomato cages, paid for them and left. The only nice employee was the cashier, she gets the only two stars. I'll never shop at McLendon again. read more

Even though they are not really local anymore, the service and products are superior to Lowe's or Home Depot. They employ staff who actually know the store, the merchandise and know about "stuff." You can describe a problem or a "thingee" that you need and they can find it/direct you or help you learn what it is that might help you. I love that! read more

I like going to Home Depot, but good luck getting help. Today I went to McLendons because I needed some specific PVC pieces. I was helped not once, but twice, and I didn't need to go up and down 6 aisles to get the help. A PVC 1" male to a garden hose adapter? No problem, the employee grabbed some pieces from two isles away and put them together: "Here you go, does that work?" It saved me a lot of time, it worked, and I will be back. read more

The store has gone straight downhill ever since they changed store managers from Bobby to Lee. I am an ex-employee at this store and NONE of the employees are happy at all with how they're treated, which in turn provides absolute garbage customer service. I made complaints to HR against Lee, and he cut my hours illegally down to 7 hours a week without any notice, which is criminal. Then proceeded to firing me because "I didn't look customers in the eyes" even though I act as friendly and hard working as I can. He retaliated against me. The only reason I'm.giving it 3 stars is because this is the second year in a row I bought something that broke as soon as I got home. So glad this place exists. Being a local chain, it is a great alternative to the 'big box stores'. The footprint and stock is large enough to feel the competition, but not so small that I feel like I'm paying their rent through bug mark ups. Their nursery/gardening section is wonderful. I really like it so much better than Lowe's or Home Depot and it is just as plentious. Their stock is so healthy and varied. This is mostly what I've come for since I haven't been at the DIY stuff lately, but I have no doubt this is where I'll go when I get the bug to get 'er did!! I have to admit that I'm a frequent flyer at McClendon on Pearl. I also tend to purchase items and not need them, which McClendon Hardware is always happy to help with returns. On 7/23/24 and 7/24/24 I received amazing customer service from two young men in the lumber area. Jared and Avery helped me with some scrap pieces that I was able to find use for. I would not recommend this location only because the employees are RUDE!! I had one lady (the only one) that asked if I needed help and she was Very nice! The other two... cashier and other cashier were not nice at all!! The sales tag was wrong and granted it was in total only a $4.63 adjustment however if the cashier that rang me up was nicer .... not even "nice" maybe even just said Hello or Greet me with a "Whats up" I would not have pushed the issue (since it's the holidays). I think with all going on in the world people need to look up the definition of Customer Service! While coming to Mclendon's because they were the only store to carry the size of insulation I needed for our remodel. We were assisted by 4 different people with smiles on their faces. They didn't have one item that showed in stock. Immediately after verifying inventory of an alternative they were quick to help get two pallets down from the ceiling, loading and answering all our questions. Best hardware store around. read more

Went on Sunday 3/3/19 to look at deck material options. From the beginning it was not a good experience. There were stocking boxes everywhere, blocking aisles, things haphazardly tossed around (or so it appeared to be), making it difficult to go down some aisles, yet there was no staff working it - it was as if they dropped it and left. Next we asked where lumber for decking was (first time at this McLendon, typically go to the one on Canyon). We were sent to an aisle that was full of interior trim. Next we found another employee, asked him where lumber for decking was. He hesitated, then said "come with me". He took us to what appeared to be a house inside the store, where you could see through the entry a man sitting at a desk. The employee says "These people need help with decks, do you want to help them or should I just send them to the yard?" The employee begins asking us questions from his seated position, while we are still out in the store - he then gets up and takes us outside to the lumber. From the beginning he spoke to my fiance, who has never built a deck, yet I have flipped 11 homes. He was condescending, and tried to tell me you can only build decks with untreated lumber you seal or with Trex type decking, or you get splinters and there is poison in the sealant they treat the lumber with. We then asked him to show us the Trex type decking, he took us outside, and immediately began telling us the prices. When I expressed an avid interest in one style, he told me it was $89 a board, then repeated himself again when I told my fiance I liked the texture and look of that product. He then repeated for the third time it was $89 a board. He then took us inside to the middle of the store where he showed us 1' square "click it" type product, saying we can just lay it right down over our patio and then our grass, some grass will get through but it is really flexible. He kept going on about the colors, variety, ease of use and being a cheaper alternative, it was offensive. FYI - I have a budget of $17,000 calculated for a Trex type deck. This man lost my $17,000 budget from your store, as he was condescending, did not once ask us any questions that might dictate what direction to take us in, i.e. freestanding or attached? height - how many levels? railing? privacy needed? materials? using contractor or DYI? On average I spend approximately $80,000 - $120,000 per year at McLendon, Home Depot and Lowe's in Puyallup. Your staff was horrid, sexist and lost my business. I would have asked to speak to a manager but there was no one available at the front to ask, as the cashier was on their cell phone. read more

This is a family service nursery with lots of knowledgeable individuals working. My mother my father my grandparents aunts and uncles and cousins all come here during specific times of the year to celebrate our loved ones that have passed. We have always done the pancake breakfast in honor of a grandfather, we've always gotten are fuchsias on the fuchsius sales to have represent our grandmother and the relationship we had with her as well as coming on Mother's Day and Easter for different types of plants to give as gifts. I love our local stores and will continue to go local as opposed to going to the bigger chains that have no concepts and their customers services arent as great read more

This place has gone downhill fast after sold to some corporate. It's no longer "family-owned store" or local business anymore. They are still more expensive but really lacking the helpfulness and warm feeling that I were willing to pay more to support local business. Staff are not helpful at all. At the garden, they just ignore you with unapproachable cold faces. Was going to ask about a plant I was hoping they might have.... I was walking in the store and this big young lady just walked towards me and yelling loudly to greet another employee. I yielded to avoid being ran into. She just kept talking loudly. At the cashier, the lady told me the plastic tube I bought can not be returned. I said yes, I am aware of it. (since it is cut to order, I never thought of returning. And it's just a few dollars ). After my ackownledgement, she would find this big marker to highlight on the receipt where it says no return. She really didn't have to do that since it's already written on the receipt. I have purchased so much from them throughout the years and always go there rather than the bigbox stores even they are closer to me. I will AVOID going there from now. I have shopped at the Tacoma McLendon store several times. The clerks are mainly people who have been employed in there fields for a long time. While the original family left the business they incorporated with a national company who picks up these local smaller groups, leaves local management in place, and uses size to provide price and supplies that come with size. I find the people to be most helpful, knowledgable, and attentive to my needs. My view is they are still a local business with local people of knowledge and care. read more
