Gray's landscaping is coming out Friday morning. I went over all the projects that need to be done. Tom the owner & I did a walk through last Friday. Dead branches will be cut down from old trees. We are getting patio pavers installed in back of our patio. There will be some patio repair & washing. I am getting a large Oak tree stump planted in my nature area. My original one got burned down. This company was contracted to remove a dead and split tree and grind the stump from my property. My only interaction with Gray's outdoor Services was via phone with the owner, Thomas Gray. He assured me that they have been in business for 28 years and he could be trusted. He said that he wanted 750 dollars to cut the tree down and remove the debris and an additional 100 dollars to grind the stump which I agreed to. They showed up at the correct time to remove the tree, when finished I received a call from Tom requesting that I pay him for the tree portion and the "stump guy" would be along shortly and I was to pay him the additional 100 dollars when completed. Once I transfered him the money for the tree there was no contact and the "stump guy" never showed. Several attempts to call and text went unanswered and it soon became clear to me that he never intended to grind the stump and just lied to me to get the gravy of the tree removal. I would HIGHLY recommend that if you use this company DO NOT pay any monies until the job is completely done. Did they remove the tree,Yes Did they clean the debris, Yes Did he Lie to me, Yes Did he ghost me afterword's, Yes Would I ever use a contractor that lies to me, NO P.S. When I conveyed my disappointment in how this transaction went down he accused me of being a KAREN. Wow, I just was looking to receive what we agreed to and what I paid for. They have have done 2 jobs for me. Both were done Great. 1 had 29 Large Trees and they were in and out in 3/4 day. All debris gone, street cleaned, stumps ground - all at a very reasonable price. Today I had a 5 foot stump removed that was left when Gray's outdoor service brought down two of my trees last winter. Once the snow had melted and I got a good look at what was left, it took alot to get my back yard in order. The sloppy work wasn't enough. My biggest complaint - Tom (the owner) didn't get the stump grinder out to finish the job. The crew damaged my fence and never apologized. Neither Rob (sales) or Tom are responding to text or phone messages asking about the stump grinding that was one of the reasons I hired them to do the work. They were efficient and prompt with the tree removal. The pricing was good for what they did.. Poor communication. Incomplete work. Collateral damage. Follow through, don't tell someone what you're going to do, and then don't do it. Even after, rewriting the contract, you failed to complete what you wrote, again. The salesman lied and it can not be put on "miscommunication"! You just said, "f it" and did not do it. Tree removal itself was done well, especially after alerting supervisor Louis of branches hitting my roof. Clean up was going very well until after supervisor left and I had to leave. Apparently when some workers know no one is looking, they are not as careful. The street itself could have been cleaned up better, as well as my porch and the sidewalk. I keep a very neat home. Had to use my blower to clean off porch and sidewalk. Btw..city of Detroit hired this company for removal of dead/diseased trees. read more

Booked the appointment 12/14/2023 for Cortland. Louis with his team arrived on time and performed the job as promising. They cut off all trees with stumps in backyard and front yard, removed the bushes, and cleaned up after their job. Outdoor Service is worth to have business with them. I am really amazed by all the negative reviews because I had an excellent experience. I was looking for a company to trim back my neighbor's huge trees that were overhanging my property (and have been for a long time) and had caused $4,000 damage before. I found them through HomeAdvisor explained what I needed and the issues in trimming them. They are very close between my yard and my neighbor's, so there is no easy way to get to them or get equipment back there. I have been looking for a solution for years and hadn't found one yet. I posted the review in December, he contacted me by text, I sent him a picture of my house and the trees. He came and looked at what I needed done. Said they could do it but workers would have to climb the trees (so it cost more, which I understand). Unless they took down fences or come through neighbors' yards, they couldn't reach them without doing it the hard way. I paid him NOTHING down. I told him I wanted an invoice and copy of their license and insurance, which he sent me. He quoted me a price of $5500 (it involved 2 or 3 large Cottonwood trees and two other big trees right near my house, it took almost the entire day, and they finished it in one day. I constantly dealt with branches and leaves falling on my roof and in my yard. I told him I wanted him on-site (didn't want a bunch of young kids). He and his crew came when he told me they would, did what he said PLUS cleaned my gutters and cut down other stray nuisance bushes and small trees. Did no damage except a couple patio blocks I had near the fence which I wasn't that worried about. Not only that, but I referred them to my daughter who had a worrisome tree branch over her house. She was happy with them also. The only problem is.....he told me he could fill in a low spot in my front yard, but he told me, frankly, he'd be busy this year on a city job. I haven't been able to get an answer back from him. He told me he could do the job but now I can't reach him. Maybe he's just busy. I called the office and the guy said he would check into where he was at. 3:45 came, and no updates on whereabouts. So I called again... TWICE. Both times I got sent straight to voicemail. A big oak on our church property split down the middle due to wind on Sunday afternoon. Half of it was leaning toward the sanctuary and could have caused $20k damage easily. I called Tom on Sunday night because his crew had done an excellent job for my daughter's house in Royal Oak. He rearranged his schedule, and sent his team there the next morning due to the emergency situation. They arrived at 8:30 am as scheduled. This was a difficult job because the tree was tall and the half leaning toward the sanctuary could fall at any moment. There was also an electrical wire running through the tree on the opposite side of the sanctuary. They took down the electric wire (and put it back up when done). The foreman, Matt, went up in a bucket and they tied the 2 halves of the tree together so that it wouldn't fall while they worked on it. They worked on it all day, and were done about 3:30 pm. The equipment was all top notch and shiny. All the workers were hard working and conscientious. They gave us high quality walnut wood chips from a previous job, which we will use for a church work day, (which will help us get back together physically during this pandemic). read more

Despite other negative reviews I decided to try them out anyway, as the price and timeline they quoted for me was much better than I got from other companies. Had them remove a cherry tree from my front yard and grind the stump down. The quote, phone calls, and appointment went off without a hitch. They had quite a few guys, all in uniform, their own equipment/trucks with their logo on them, etc. A real company, not just some dude in a pickup truck with a chainsaw (like many other offers I got). Everything was quick, everyone was courteous, and I now have one less crusty old tree in my yard. read more

Grays Outdoor Services was contracted to do a full landscape , using a ditch witch bobcat to pick up small piles of debris these geniuses cracked my driveway with the steel bucket on the machine. After they finished my driveway pavement was cracked , after notifying Tom ("owner") , he failed to act on the repairs or take responsibility for the damage to my driveway . Tom started a job for me last summer (2018), and he has yet to finish. His crew dumped the leftover cement mix in the back corner of my backyard. My kid obviously found a way to fall on it and skin his knee. His crew took off a section of my fence, then put it back wrong. While also stripping the screws making it a real pain to fix. He also messed up the pattern of the pavers used for our patio. To top it off he is not good at getting back via phone or text, and constantly says he will be there, but no shows. I would never hire Gray's again. When taking down a tree in my yard, their grinder broke. Instead of telling me and scheduling a time to come back and finish up, they covered the 7 foot wide stump with wood chips and told me the chips were to fill in the area once things started decaying. I wondered about that and eventually raked the wood chips away, only to find a ragged stump, still several inches above ground. I contacted Tom Gray, who basically said, "F**k you". I notified the Better Business Bureau. Tom just laughed at that. Then I contacted the Michigan Attorney General's office. That got his attention. He then sent someone out to remove the stump. But I shouldn't have had to fight to get what I'd paid for in the first place. read more

This is the worst experience with a contractor. Tom Gray ( the owner) came and gave me an estimate. We agreed on the price. They came to start the job on Tuesday. They were supposed to cut, remove and grind the stumps of two trees. Day 1: Tom came with his crew. He asked for 1/2 the amount upfront before they started the work. I gave him a check. The check was cashed that day. He left and his crew started the job. By the end of Tuesday they cut down one tree to the stump. Cleaned everything and said they will be back to finish the following day. Day 2 : the crew came and started removing the branches on the second tree. They de-limbed the tree by lunch. after lunch they said that they can not finish the job because they need to get a better harness than the one they had and said they had ordered one and should be in within 1 or 2 days. I said ok. They left my house and went across the street to my neighbor's house to do a side job for him the rest of the afternoon. This was the last I have seen of them. After several attempts to reach Tom Gray he finally answered (a week later) and said they don't have the harness yet but maybe will get the next day. The next day no one showed up. I called Tom Gray but no one will answer my calls any more. I left him many messages but still no answer. It has been 2 weeks now and still no show and still no one answering my messages or my calls. I thought I had hired a well respected company. I was wrong. Now I need to hire a new company to come and finish the job that Gray's Outdoor services left incomplete. If you decide to use this creep for ANYTHING, do not pay him ANY money up front! If he asks for a deposit, tell him you will only pay when the job is finished. Why? Because his modus operandi is: once he has your money, he doesn't think he has to stick to the schedule he agreed to or even finish the job. It is also his method of doing business to not take your calls when you're wondering why he or his crew didn't show up. Instead, he will send a text message with some excuse such as (1) he is in a meeting, had equipment problems, etc., and will call you later or (2) he or his crew will come the next day or some other day. Neither of these things will actually happen and he will perform this nasty trick over and over again ... I hired him to trim some trees. His crew was polite and did an ok job -- not great (they left some small things undone and some piles of branches for me to clean up). Nonetheless, I was ok with it and paid him at the end of the job. He and I had discussed ripping out my old deck and installing a paver patio. Since they did an ok job with the trees, and he sounded like he knew what he was doing, I thought I could trust him with a bigger job. I should have delved deeper into the reviews. Unfortunately, I gave him a deposit on the second job. The job was supposed to take no more than one week to finish (there was a signed agreement stating this). His crew showed up to rip out the deck, leaving a big hole in the ground and didn't come back until the following week. Over the course of two more weeks they managed to dig the hole a little more and fill it with gravel. During this time, I heard nothing from Thomas Gray unless it was a lie. He would not answer my calls, I had no idea when or if his crew was coming to continue the work. After a month, I was tired of being inconvenienced, left a message telling him not to come back, and found another contractor. I figure that I lost approximately $1200, as that was the difference between the deposit amount I had paid him and what I had to pay the second contractor. It has been 2 weeks and the weeds are back already meaning that either they did not put down preen like they said they would or they did not get the root.
