This review is for the paint itself, not the staff. Bought 2 gallons of ceiling paint since Gray's is 15 minutes closer than H.D. Ben Moore's is surprisingly watery compared to behr and costs almost twice the price. I'm needing to do 2-3 coats while behr was single coat. Driving the extra distance would've saved me time overall. Lesson learned. read more

Gray's paint employees have always been helpful. I go to the Burlingame store. Jeffrey Gray is the owner of the franchise, and he works behind the counter here. His stain matches are excellent, and I've gone there for matches on floor repair jobs. Other reviews don't always mention which location they went to. I will say that thr Burlingame location has given me consistent good service for 16 years. read more

Outstanding service! I was in the store the other day looking for a specific product. One of their employees behind the counter said it was due in today. I went back today to buy to product and while it wasn't on the shelf, the employee said he went to another one of their locations to get a few bottles for me. I'm flabbergasted that the reviews are what I see on here for Grays/Benjamin Moore. We went in a busy afternoon and were subtly acknowledged almost right away which I liked a lot. We browsed around and was met with someone a few minutes later. George was beyond knowledgeable, immensely helpful and so patient my inexperience with the color wheel! He gave me two samples, that I thought would be perfect. When I returned to finetune, he gave me the third sample, which ended up being in my whole house on every wall! I absolutely love it! Shopping for paint is not easy. Our eyes and what we see are as unique as our DNA sometimes (and out color wheel knowledge). Lucky for you this guy George has got your covered. Outstanding customer service! I went in to Gray's Paint toward the end of January to purchase paint for my daughter's room. I have painted before, but I am no expert and it has been years. George was amazing - so knowledgeable, kind and helpful. I told him what we were going for and he asked if I had a picture of the room, which I did. He paid specific attention to the color of the wood flooring and the lighting. He immediately had one color in mind and showed me two other similar colors. He prepared sample jars of each of these three colors and I grabbed a small brush. I was surprised how little they charged for this. I asked him for painting advice, which he was happy to share. I painted the three patches that day and went back the next day to purchase the paint we had chosen.... which was actually the first color that George suggested! Thank you, George, for being awesome! The room looks perfect - we are so happy with the color. read more

2024 UPDATE: The Redwood City store is still horribly rude to women AND they refuse to comply with ADA. Nonhandicapped people (incl. Gray's staff) regularly park in the disabled space. The staff still laughs about it. Gray's recently painted their entire store exterior, BUT did not repaint the blue handicapped parking space WHICH THEY'VE LET ERODE almost completely (where is the wall sign?). PLEASE don't support this Gray's store in any way whatsoever. They don't care about our community at all. read more

I ordered paint in the store and they said it would be ready later. I understood and came back over an hour later to ask just to ask if they knew when it would be ready (I was not in a hurry but wanted to know if I should head home or wait). They said it would be done by the end of the day. As I was leaving, the guy complains and makes fun of me behind my back with other customers in line. I won't get paint there again and will head to Sherman Williams where their customer service was helpful and kind. read more

Personalized service and beyond!! Recently, I needed guidance on choosing some paint for a large project. I contacted Gray's Paint in RWC. They were so personable. They helped me to identify the type of paint and finish that would be a good fit for my dining room, bathroom and Master Bedroom. They also worked with me to help PERSONALIZE the "perfect" color and tint for my home. The whole process was so easy!!! The staff was very detail oriented, friendly and wonderful to work with. I truly appreciated that they listened and helped me to identify the best materials for my project. These days when so much is online, I forget how much in person service means. Gray's Paint reminded me of how nice it is to be able to go into a store and get one to one help on my project. I really felt like the staff at Gray's Paint wants their customers to leave with the right product for their project because they truly care about their customers--that means a lot!! I love coming into this store. The staff is so friendly and knowledgable. I had a few projects I wanted to do around the house with all this free time during quarantine, but really didn't know where to start. I was asked thorough questions about the details of my project and assisted in finding and buying all my materials like drop cloths and tape. Would definitely recommend this store to anyone looking to start a painting project. THE WORST! I cannot believe the bad service I got here yesterday. One star is because Yelp forces at least one. What the guys must not understand is that paint is about the most basic commodity there is, we can literally go anywhere to get it. As a designer, I look for the place where the staff is open to discussing the nuance of color, advising me on finishes, and addressing my challenges with curiosity and a helpful attitude. They are SO RUDE at the Redwood City Gray's! The guy who helped me hardly looked at me and when he did it was just at my chest. When I asked if he had the larger Benjamin Moore swatches available (and that I would pay) he said (rudely) "no, just buy a quart". When I asked if I could see the BM fan deck - it's how my mind works - he said (rudely) "no, you need to buy one". When I asked about the formula for the custom blend of Sansin I was mixing vs. their stock color, in order to understand the difference and perhaps save my client time and money, he literally just ignored me and made some snide comment about "what does she know about the formula" to his co-worker. I am working on a huge residential farm project in Woodside, we are ordering custom Sansin stain for the entire scope, four buildings in total, and will be painting the interior with Benjamin Moore. The total project is approx. 30,000 s.f. I will tell the painting contractor where to buy the materials and you can BET it will not be at the Redwood City Gray's. I'm so happy I can honestly say I will never step foot in here again. With so many choices, I'll go to the showrooms where I find collaborators and colleagues. I do color consulting and have purchased over 200 colors or more, in small sample pots, pints, and quarts. I have given these guys way too much credit and way too much money. YOUR ATTITUDE IS TERRIBLE. I am a customer. Why wrong me? This store has lost my business for good. Bob, your guys need to be kicked in the butt and learn how to be nice and courteous. I just spent the last two weeks trying to work with this location and they make it very difficult. I needed stain for cedar siding and went with Sansin, which is a great product, but gets complex when it comes to which product(s) to use. There are base coats and finish coats in each of the different products, etc. My first experience was similar to others, if you are not a paint expert you are treated very poorly. I had to pry to get basic questions answered. I've done a fair amount of painting over the years but have never used this particular (and very expensive) product. There is one helpful person who was the reason I kept going back. He recommended two coats of SDF at 100% tint and a third coat of SDF "top coat) at 25%. I had the top coat already and went back to get it tinted. A different person was there and seemed irritated at my request and stated that 25% won't even be noticeable. He said I should do 75%. I said the current stain is darker than I prefer anyway. so 25% is good. We went back and fourth. Finally, he went to back to prepare it. As I was walking out I noticed the label said 75%. I went back to clarify what that meant and he said "The last question I asked you was if you wanted the original tint reduced by 25%, or 75%" I said I wanted 25%. So, he Jedi-mind-tricked me by flipping the question until he got the answer he wanted. He had to make a new gallon ($100/gal) at 25%. Or, I think he did. I now have no trust in what he did with my product. The Irony of this store is that there are people who work at the store who will say "oh, I don't know about that product, you need to ask someone else" But, as a customer, if you don't know about a product you are treated less than. Lastly, since they have few samples in stock I had to drive to the other location less than 10 minutes away to pick some up. They were MUCH more helpful. I did not read the reviews prior to going in to the store. Many other Yelpers have captured my sentiments. These guys are rude; they are not helpful. I think some of them might even be color blind. Who knew there could so many subtleties in color?That would all be fine, if someone behind the counter could do more than greet with a surly acknowledgment and do something other than ring up your purchase. And then keep your credit card and blame you for leaving it there when you go back to retrieve it! My painter (interior) likes BM paints so that's why I went into to the store. I could open my own little store of little pot samples based on the fact that I probably have around 40. Other hard facts to swallow: the little paint chip does not resemble the paint in the little test jar which does not resemble the paint once it's on your wall. Oh, sure maybe with a test swatch. But cover your entire wall with it, two coats even and you will be flummoxed. BTW: Silver gray is actually a blue in disguise. Found out the hard way. So, not impressed with the paints; the counter help is pathetic. I went to Sherwin Williams in RWC and bought the rest of my paint there. They were even having a sale and open on Memorial Day Gray's Paints has terrible hours. Why do you have to close on three on Saturdays? Whom are you servicing by doing this? I had consistent great service from this place. I really don't understand the negative reviews. Here is my experience in a nutshell. On a Friday afternoon, 10 minutes before the store closes (got caught in traffic), I show up like a layman in need of help demystifying what paint line I should go for. I was in over my head with this aspect of remodeling my home. They sat with me patiently, explained the product line, and gave me a few recommendations. I also had some colors picked out, and they helped me get some swatches, and suggestions on other colors that would work with my theme. I had brought a counter top, backsplash tile and wood samples. The owner asked me if I was going to paint myself or hire a painter. I explained to him my frustrating situation finding a painter, let alone one that is willing to work with Benjaman Moore and not try the bait an switch with a lower end line. He gave me references to two painters that sounded great. I hired one of them that did a fantastic job on my house. I then visited the store another time to help me narrow down this ever elusive shade of white I wanted my trim and ceilings to be painted with without it looking muddy or too bright. A different staff member sat and worked with me this time around and helped me narrow down the colors. Amazing staff all around, very friendly. They played an integral part in my home remodel and I would highly recommend the store and their products! read more

We learned long ago to steer away from the big stores (Home Depot, OSH, etc...) for painting supplies; they always seem to have a tremendous turnover of untrained, unhelpful employees. They can push the buttons on the paint mixing machine, but that's about it. Gray's employs professionals who know their products. Mr. Gray has been a generous parishioner at nearby St. Pius for years and has earned the reputation of a reliable supplier with high quality products. Don't come here for bargains - go buy the cheap paint at Home Depot if that's what you want. But if you spend any time at all at Gray's you will see a steady stream of contractors and pros who buy their supplies there. The showroom always seems a big overcrowded and disorganized, but if you ask for help you will get it from a knowledgeable person. I was about to buy a quart to use as a tester and the clerk went out of his way to find me one of the small paint pots instead, saving me many bucks... I'm surprised to read the other negative reviews, perhaps it a matter of expectations. Mine are high and have been consistently met by shopping at Gray's. Several years ago when Kelly Moore decided to move in to the store across the intersection, Mr. Gray was not concerned. He knows that he can retain his loyal clientele with skillful service and good products. read more

Since moving to the neighborhood 3years ago we've probably been to this store 15 times and spent close to $2000 on paint and supplies. There seems to be some friendly and knowledgeable staff mixed in with mediocre staff. The one time I asked for advice on a product, I was referred to a primer which was the WORST possible primer to use for my kitchen cabinets. This simple mistake lead to probably 20x more labor and effort in my cabinet refinishing. It was thick, nasty stuff with no leveling characteristics. It wasn't until I had to call a professional to finish the job that I saw just how badly this wrong primer had affected my project. On the positive side, they have many samples, they carry C2 as well as Fine Paints of Europe. Not to go off on a tangent but the Fine Paints of Europe is such a wonderful paint, not nearly as hard to work with as some would have you believe, FPE USA has such exceptional customer support that I need to find them on Yelp and write a glowing review. I don't mean to be too harsh on Gray's, they mean well and are 1000x better than Home Depot, but they definitely have room for improvement. read more

I love this store! I was a Kelley Moore fan, but the store near me didn't offer much customer service if you had questions and I wanted more color samples, so I tried Gray's and I'm so glad I did. I got wonderful advice on exterior paint finishes and color from Daniel and when I went in another time, one of the guys gave me good advice on how to fix an issue with the paint on my interior door trim peeling. They also have wallpaper books which I appreciated looking through (though I eventually went with paint). I do a bunch of small DIY projects and I was impressed with their selection of primers, specialty paints like rustoleum, and tools. I'll be going back to Gray's for my next project. read more

Regarding Gray's Paint, the company, I found the counter service friendly, I appreciate the paint quality and had no problem color matching. The paint itself will run less as it is just a little less thick than some competitors. Also noteworthy is that Gray's provides the paint in what might be considered a more environment friendly paint can. These work fine though seem veritably more fragile than the older thick walled cans. I have only visited the Woodside store, and found the setting appropriate for most attire. I am giving the store a 5-star rating based on Paul, a manager's skill at color matching. If your like me, and obsessed at getting the perfect color - not just 'sort' of the right color - shop here. Home Depot paint is less, however, I wasted two days and endless trips back and forth to HD buying samples that looked right in the store but not in my room. I finally carved out a minuscle chip of color from my wall - more like a flake - and took it into Gray's where Paul was able to find a color chip that matched exactly, all based on his eye and knowledge. No machine, no technology, just skill. Once the entire room was completed, it turned out to be a perfect color match. A lesson - the paint probably cost $15-$20 more but the results are stellar. read more

We won't be going to Gray's for a long time... My disappointment was with multiple errors as well as their lack of concern for their mistakes. This is not a big box retailer with cheap paint and self service. 1. They mixed the wrong type of paint, as well as the color. I discovered the paint type error after painting the room. 2. When I pointed out their mistake of the wrong paint type on the phone, the manager/owner gave me a hard time. On the plus side, he told me to come in & pick up replacement paint. 3. When I came in, they mixed the 2 quarts and gave me the paint. Very cold, very brusque. 4. When I finished the first coat, I realized that it too was not the paint color requested; with a far, far different color than the mistake type. The second quart was correct color. Gray's errors resulted in taking a 3 coat job to 6 coats (had to re-prime...) 5. I called Benjamin Moore & told them that I wanted to go to a different distributor. They sent me to California Paint on California in Palo Alto, where I picked up 2 quarts and a new brush, no charge. Hey, we all make mistakes; it's how the mistakes are corrected that weighs into where we spend our $$$ and our time. My time to drive to Palo Alto will be worth it in the future. read more

Color matching by the color blind... and rude to boot! The guy at the counter was a jerk to me and flip with my very pregnant wife. A real a-hole. Our painter sent us to Gray's to discuss the issues they had with their attempt to color match another company's color. They were NOT pleasant about it and didn't want to try, but said they would.... in the end, I think they re-delivered the same gallon of paint. They told us they wouldn't try and it was close enough (it wasn't, our painter, decorator and contractor said it was wrong). I can understand not being able to perfectly match someone else's color. There are two things they need to note: 1. Be honest about it and say you can't match it perfectly - don't claim that it's just us or that it's close enough. When everyone involved says you did it wrong and what the issue with the 2. Don't be jerks about it. When a customer has a problem, deal with it pleasantly. Our painter sent us in because you were jerks to him - then you were jerks to us. We're customers - if you ever want to see us back, be pleasant. Our painter uses Grays a lot, but likely won't be back in this store. There are plenty of paint dealers and I'm sure other Benjamin Moore dealers. Go elsewhere and save yourself the trouble of the horrible service and the color-blind color matching. read more

I wish I could post ZERO stars. I'm hoping that my review will help others. Our painter recommended that we select Benjamin Moore colors because they are nice, but go with Dunn Edwards paint due to the quality and longevity. When I asked to find a particular color, Cloud Grey, the four lazy guys behind the counter couldn't even get it together to point me in the right direction. There was a gentleman with light brown hair who overheard and saw no action, so he came and helped (from the other side of the store). I selected a number of colors and purchased the sample pots so that I could go see how they would show up on my walls. The guy who helped me then gave me a few sponge brushes because of all the paint I was buying. Note that I stated that he gave them to me. I even confirmed this as he said, "Don't worry about it. I'm throwing it in." I thought it was a nice gesture, one that would bring a customer back to buy more paint. Not so fast ... As I was leaving, the four lazy dumbos decided that it was time to come tell me that I could not take the brushes that were given to me, even as they were there when the other guy had given it to me. I was mortified and made to look like a criminal. What terrible service. Either make this standard practice or better train your staff. Either way, this store had lazy staff with attitudes that seemed to think it was okay to yell at customers. I will never buy anything from this paint store again!!! And I'll make sure those I know won't either!!! You're better off going across the street. Those guys were much nicer and ultimately where I bought my sponge brushes. read more

I had to bicker with 2 employees then a supervisor to get a price adjustment on already extremely high priced paint. Then the supervisor hassled me to send a fax proving that i had purchased it for that price. When I went to the store on another occasion they had a long line of disgruntled customers and could only help 2 people at a time when there was 5 people at the counter. For a massive store they sure dont anticipate spike sales or they would have a 3rd register. I love bm paint, dont love this store read more

I gave Gray's my visa so my painter could come in to get the needed paint over a few days to paint my house. When I saw the entire bill, I thought it was quite high. I called the store on 2 occassions to get an itemized list of what was purchased and they never sent me the info. Bottom line, I don't trust these guys. Also the paint used ended up bubbling, so the painter had to come out to paint again. read more

I went to this store to buy stain for interior doors and needed to select/match the stain color. To do that, I had to buy 6 small, sample size containers and try it at home using the wood of our doors. Stains looks very different on different wood species, so the color you see in the store is poor prediction of what you will get in your house. I spent over 60 dollars on samples (which are not returnable) and the stain match was not ideal. I went to a different store and had a completely different experience: I was asked to bring the wood pieces and the store staff applied 6 different stains for me. I was able to find the right stain without wasting time and money. The gallon of stain cost me less that all the samples I had to buy from Gray's. Additionally, I asked for oil or gel based stain, but 2 out of 6 samples sold to me at Gray's were water-based. They pushed that particular brand, but either did not know their products well or did not listen to their customer. If you are shopping for wood stain, do not go to this store: there are much better options! read more
