Wanted a local place for paint to fix a few rooms, and every single person there was approachable, friendly, and helpful. I'd gone in with a few choices for primer, and they helped narrow down my pick. They also carry smaller containers of specialty items (e.g. Modern Masters metallics), great for both smaller projects and testing for larger projects. A huge range of tools was fantastic to go through to fill the gaps in my painting tools collection, too. If you need it, they have it. If they don't have it, they'll order it for you. Wrong color paint followed by horrible customer service. I ordered an off-white color which I was able to confirm it was wrong when I purchased a second of the same kind. Brought the cans in and they realized they had given me a base white by mistake instead of the color that I had ordered. OK, definitely not the level of service one should expect from any paint company. Mistakes happen. But this male employee doesn't even apologize for the inconvenience and offers me a "free" can. What do you mean "free"? I'm finally getting the product that I paid for, minus hours and hours of labor that needs to be reversed. When I asked to get at least an apology he yells "Jesus! What do you want?" A female employee apologized instead. This male employee really shouldn't be dealing with customers. read more

This is a small Benjamin Moore store and its as good as it gets. We recently redid our entire house from a paint perspective and could not have been happier with our experience here. Friendly / helpful staff (from helping show us colors to mixing the paint promptly) was top notch. Color Selection: A whole range, plus those from pottery barn makes it it both easy and hard (too many choices) Tons of colors in tiny sample sizes that makes it easier and cheaper to see what that color will really look like when you get it home. The Natura brand Zero VOC paint made painting the interior better for the entire family. It also was easier to paint and stuck better than the Home Depot alternative (It was more expensive though) We bought a lot of furniture at Room and Board and the showroom in SF is painted Benjamin Moore paints and they can give you the color there. Take it to the store and boom, your ready to go. We were very happy with our experience here and have given up Home Depot paint for good. read more

I am absolutely amazed with their customer service! Isabelle went above and beyond in helping me understand colors and textures( I have zero exposure to paints) and tried to match the sherwin Williams colors for me. They have samples you can purchase for $5 as opposed to sherwin Williams making us purchased quarts:( Isabelle was extremely helpful and even called home depot to check if they have the colors i might like! We extensively remodeled our house in the past year, and required a lot of interior and exterior paint. My wife discussed with Hugo on an initial order $1500 and we were told we would get the contractor pricing. We then arrived to pick up our order and found out that Hugo lied to us and charged us a higher amount. We asked him about it and he said no one gets that contractor pricing. We called Gray's immediately and were told we could get that pricing. On another occasion we again came by and Hugo again lied to us about another pricing issue. We do not recommend dealing with Hugo and will not come to California Paint ever again. read more

It's a free service so call in advance to make sure she's there and not too busy. Pratt and Lambert has excellent exterior colors and benjamin moore Aura is what I recommend for interior walls. There is also a color consultant available to answer questions and recommend colors (especially if you bring in pictures of what you want). I want to like this store, really. We need one on California Ave.. But, honestly, the people who work there are so weird. Maybe they inhale too much paint. The advice I got yesterday was terrible. The person wasn't listening to me - I asked for paint, he pulled a can of varnish; I suggested paint (hello!), and eventually he practically threw it at me. It always seems like they just want the contractors' business. On the plus side, one of the employees noticed the rudeness and offered to help me out with my paint. That was nice. There is one color consultant who is really brilliant. She remembered my paint color (if you are reading this, ma'am, it was "lemon chiffon" - which is what you call me now) several years later. read more

Upon having multiple issues with another local paint company (matching colors and rude staff). I found CA paint company and decided to try them. The staff was awesome, they were able to match the colors I needed and were responsive to my timeline and questions. On my first visit they were really busy, but the manager and his staff took their time to answer all of my questions without feeling rushed. I can't thank Isabell enough for helping me with some difficult color matching, both trim and wall colors that were originally painted 20 years ago. Isabell has a great eye for color and is super patient and helpful. The hall matched the foyer color perfectly, so I ended up saving a ton of money not having to repaint the entire two story main stair case area. We bought several hundred dollars worth of paint here, and 3 tray liners that didn't end up fitting our tray. We tried to return the perfect condition trays while on a walk, but forgot the receipt. They wouldn't do a return without a receipt. They lost our future business over $3 by showing that they don't really care about customer service. read more

The customer service is as good as it gets. Casey had the patience to tweak the color formula MULTIPLE times for me. I had started with Benjamin Moore at OSH but their computer was all off as were the colors (and they actually referred me to California Paint, saying that's who they called when they had problems). I knew I was being crazy and told Casey as much, but he said "We want you to get the color you want." If it were me behind the counter, I would have called someone to "get the crazy lady out of the store!!" They have the patience and expertise to get you what you want - I can't recommend this store more. read more

We are replacing the counter tops in our kitchen, and the previous owner painted the cabinets a really cool mint color. Since the previous counter tops hung over and the new ones do not, I needed to touch up a bit on the top of the cabinets. As she seems to have purchased all her paint from the cal ave Benjamin Moore store, I took a drawer and headed down to see if either they had it on file or could match the paint. They did not have it on file (they keep files for 5 years) and told me that they could not match the color for less than a gallon (WAY more than I needed - apparently this is a manager's policy so may be different at other locations) and that in order to match the color (assuming I decided to buy a gallon) it would take 2 days! Needless to say I left. I called the Kelly Moore store (on page mill). They guy there was happy to match my color, in a quart - no need to buy a gallon- and it only took him 10 min to do as I waited. The color matches really well. If you know what you want skip Benjamin Moore and head straight to the Kelly Moore store! read more

Great local business! All the guys (Adam, Hugo, Casey, Michelle) are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They've helped me with deck stain, paints, rust proofing. They have all the tiny sample jars of paint so you can try various colors without spending a lot of money. BTW, Benjamin Moore Aura is the absolute best paint -- no fumes, thick and creamy, easy to apply. read more

Buyer beware. Posted prices in the back of wallpaper books are outdated. I was quoted one price by one representative and given a price 60% higher by another person. When I went back a week later, the person I ordered from had quit and the representative had to ask me to come back because it looked like only half my order was there. By that time, I had lost confidence in that company and cancelled the order. I was told that I had to pay a $200.00 restocking fee and $40.00 shipping fee. The order was only for $496.00. This policy was not disclosed to me at the time of purchase. After a lot of talking with corporate and the store manager, it was settled but I still had to pay $155.00 for being dumb enough to order from them. I learned a lesson. Don't buy anything if your intuition says there's something wrong. I found the same wallpaper at Gray's Paints in Redwood City for 1/5 the price and double the amount of paper. They were much nicer, no money down until it comes in and a full refund if dissatisfied. read more

Last Tues I brought in a sample of paint to purchase a quart. The guy told me it would be ready after 4 on Wed. Having worked with this store a while back, I waited till Thurs morning, called to be sure it was done and was told it was not done yet.... I needed the paint and made sure it was done in 1/2 hour.... got to the store and the quart was done in the wrong finish plus the color was off from what was on the order slip.and had to redo - while i waited. The guy was rude and arrogant........not so great for custoer service. Next time I need paint, even thought they are closer, I will go to Grey's in Menlo Park - paint the same, service much better. Unfortunate as we could use a good paint store in Palo Alto. read more

WARNING: DON'T COLOR MATCH THERE I brought in a sample and had it color matched. When I received the can they don't show the formula for the color mix, but rather a code that forces you to return to buy future cans of paint from them. I asked for the code and they said the manager has a policy not to release that. All other stores show the formula, which would be useful if the store is not open when I need another can. read more

My husband and I went to this store today after the reviews and after a friend told us that a color consultant at another benjamin moore store had really helped them out. We found Gina, the color consultant, to be very rude. She told us to just go look at the paint sample chips and the brochures they had to get an idea of colors. She then went about doing other work for 15 minutes. When she came back (for only 5 minutes), I showed her the layout of our home, the look from pictures I had brought and concepts of what we were looking for, she told us again that she could not help since she does not know the lighting of our home and just to take color chips and then purchase a small amount to put on the wall. I also asked about grasscloth wallpaper and she just said here are all the books of wallpaper, take a look yourself and see what you like (there are literally hundreds of books!). She then excused herself to go talk to another customer even though there were several others in the store that could have helped the other customer. When she came back after another 15 minutes, she told us that we should just book a color consultation for $75 dollars and then someone would help us out! I would think twice before going in to get a full color consultation or call ahead and make sure Gina is not the color consultant. read more

I gave four stars, instead of five, cause they've made some mistakes here and there when they get too busy (paint tint off, too much sheen on the eggshell finish, etc). Went into the store to get samples of paint for the exterior of my house. Asked for three samples. One of the color I chose and two others of the same color in 75% and 50%. Paid $63 and was told to return the next day. The next day I got the samples and it was clear they were wrong. A new salesman explained they did it wrong and I need to add more money and come back again to get the samples I asked for. I gave the new samples to my contractor to mix with the stucco. Now I find out that the samples are wrong again. Next time I'll go to Gray's paint in Menlo Park, they seem to know their job a lot better. read more

Benjamin Moore reformulated their paints a few years ago. A custom mix that I had the formula for had to be redone and matched. When i went into the store the person behind the counter told me that they would not give me the formula once it was done (even though I was buying a gallon of the paint). Last time I ever visit that Benjamin Moore store-there is one in San Jose who had no problem doing the reformulation and giving the new color mix. read more

There is only one place I go, and that is California Ave Paint and Wallpaper because they have serious expertise and knowledge, proper tools, and good grade paints and stains. The worst experience I have ever had in a paint store. DO NOT BUY YOUR PAINT HERE....TERRIBLE COLOR SPECIALISTS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE. Wanted to get a match for a Pratt and Lambert paint. I was told that Pratt and Lambert didnt make this particular base(NOT TRUE) so they gave me the same color in a Ben Moore product. They also didn't inform me that the company reformulated the color since the last time I used it so not until I spent two hours painting did I realize it was slightly different. They should have noted the numbers on the color swatches were different when making this, it is not rocket science. When I went back to the store to fix the problem they told me it was my fault for not checking the color before I left. UNACCEPTABLE especially since I had both the old paint can and color with me! My beautiful caramel paint color was close but dried an ugly orange. I ate the price of the paint which is just wrong!!!!!!!!! Went to Grays in Menlo Park and they got the match right in 20 minutes. This is not how you want to spend you day so I advise never to go there if you want it done right!!!!!!!! Wasted five hours visiting paint stores and repainting my pantry because of stupidity. read more
