This place typically has the lowest prices you'll find, but their customer service is not good. I've had a number of interactions here that have left me feeling bad and not wanting to shop here anymore. 1) There was a time when they weren't sure if they had my dog's food in stock. They called the back to see if they had it, and it was a lot of back and forth about whether or not they had it. The phone call ended with them saying it was out of stock. Then a minute later they called and said they did have it after all. So I pay and pull around back, only to be told they don't have it and I would have to get a refund. This was followed by "just kidding." I was prepared to let this go, but the other interactions on top of this...it all adds up. 2) My dog hates car rides, so I put my sleeping bag on the back seat for her. It smells like me and calms her down. Someone working in the warehouse saw it and asked me if I'm homeless and live in my car, as he laughed. 3) Someone gifted me a bag of dog food in the correct brand and wrong line of food. I brought it here (unopened and brand new) to exchange it for the correct one, and was told I couldn't do that, because I had no proof it was from there, and they don't know how it's stored. This would make sense if they didn't take their own product back either, because they also don't know how the person stored it. They told me I was trying to get a free bag of food from them, which makes zero sense, considering I was trying to exchange an unopened unexpired product that actually cost more than the one I wanted, and I didn't even want the difference given back to me. It didn't matter to them I'm a long time customer of theirs. They treated me like I just randomly walked in off of the street and was demanding they hand me a free bag of food for nothing. 4) I purchased a bag of dog food, and afterwards, realized there was a small hole in the bag. I brought it back to them, and they told me if I kept the bag they would refund me $1. One dollar. They have raised the price of my dog's food by $10 per bag in the last six months or so, when it has remained the same price everywhere else. They are now about the same price as any other brick and mortar or online store. I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Well we have been buying bird seed here for over 20 years. Last year we bought three bags of Niger seed, it was different 50lb bags than we usually buy. The seed was bad, the birds would not eat. I thought it was the birds or something, when we tried to exchange the food for the regular seed they finally got back in stock, the manager or whoever was very rude And would not exchange the food. We will never go back and buy bird food there again!! Their loss!! read more

UPDATE 2019 August 20: I picked up 2 bags of fertilizer and 1 bag of pelletized lime for my New Improved Sanctuary last week and asked the owner John if he carried the herbicide Quinclorac at that time. I'm trying to kill the Barnyard grass in my Big Bluestem, Switchgrass and Indian grass around the perimeter of my property. John said he did but he introduced me to a different product Acclaim Extra. After a little research I decided this could be a better herbicide for what I am trying to achieve.  John is a very modest person but don't let him fool you, he has a wealth of knowledge. He helped me tremendously in battling the undesirable weeds and grasses in my yard and I assure you he can help you also. This is where I purchased much of the seed and fertilizer for the land I was defrauded  out of by false servant con artist realtor Betty Spiller. It was 6.5 acres I turned into a Whitetail paradise that I called The Sanctuary. John the owner is a good man and took good care of me. If they didnt have something I wanted in stock they were happy to order it for me.  Overall I will rate this experience the highest possible because this establishment is the best around for habitat improvement essentials. read more

I am adding to a short review my husband gave after he tried to talk w/another representative from the store to no avail this morning. My issue is the poor customer service and inability to listen. Their main point seems to be we didn't bring back the bad thistle at the time (March '22) ... even tho I called *in real time* and was shut down and told "something's going on with the birds" and that it wasn't a problem with the thistle (the thistle was packaged differently, in plain white unmarked bags). The woman I spoke to on Thursday last week acknowledged that they had seed at that time that "the birds did not eat". We were spring cleaning last week and found two remaining unopened bags of the bad seed. I was planning to buy new seed ... we've purchased at least 20 50lb bags a year from here for the last 20 years or so. When we ran across the two unopened bags my husband said why don't you take these with you and see if they'll credit us a bag or something. So I did. I started off my conversation with "I'm not heavily invested in how this ends but I'd like to explain my situation." I started to explain and opened my phone to a picture my husband had taken of two feeders side by side, one w/their bad seed and one with seed we purchased elsewhere after my phone call w/them when they said it was the bird's issue, not the seed ... the birds would only eat the new thistle. The woman I was speaking to quickly understood the situation and immediately started shaking her head no and said "this is over a year ago, I am not giving you your money back" ... I said I don't want my money back, can I just finish what I'm saying. She accused me of becoming defensive (a clear projection). I tried to just finish and she kept shaking her head and saying "I'm not giving you your money back". At one point she said "do you have a receipt" and I said no ... and before I could add that I was sure I could find my credit card record of the transaction she said "No, I'm not giving you your money back". I decided it was fruitless and left the store. I recall my first job in retail as a young kid ... my supervisor told me "Always remember, the customer isn't always right but *the customer is always the customer* hear them out, be respectful and find me if you can't work a problem out." ... it's customer service 101 ... it seems that the leadership in that store could use some basic training. That said, we did find a different feedstore near us, locally owned and operated, that we will be taking our business to in the future. read more

One of the best places in the neighborhood to stock up on goods for our furry and feathered friends. (yes, if you have hoofed friends you should check them out too.) Always well-staffed with knowledgeable and friendly folks. They have an incredible selection of bird seed--doesn't matter what kind of bird you've got they've got what you need to feed 'em! Dog and cat food too if you buy pre-made vittles for your furry pals. Prices are so much better than the local pet store chains which I actually find to be a little sparse and depressing. Lots and lots of doggy treats and toys, leads, bowls and other supplies--but I'm still looking for that great toy that my Staffie can't destroy. (The closet I've found is a tough rubber ring sold at the major pet chains.) But GFS has some really unique doggy treats that my pooches find quite satisfying. Excellent service and care by the staff! We are more than an hour away, but they are the only ones close enough that carry the horse feed we like. This is the only place I've found where I can buy Canidae and Felidae, and the prices are better than I have found online. They have a great selection that you won't find at a chain store. The first visit might be intimidating for someone new since it's a little old school with the paper ticket and driving around back to pick it up, but everyone is really nice and will tell you what to do. I wanted to share the following story to show how they care about their customers, but please don't start dropping off wildlife at their place or they will hate me for sharing! Awhile back I saw a momma duck get hit by a car, leaving all the babies stranded in the street. So I'm crying in the pouring rain, stopping traffic on 120 to round them up, and I'm sure I looked pretty pathetic when I stopped by the feed store to get them something to eat. They gave me a heat lamp to borrow and I don't think they charged me for the food. I got the ducks home and all set up in the bathtub while I called around to find a place to take them. Then found out I underestimated how loud the chirping would be, and I also underestimated the time it would take for the excitement to wear off for my dogs (it never did). So after an hour or two of chirping and barking, I called the feed store for advice and they told me to bring them back so they could stay at the store for the night. PLUS they knew of a customer that has had experience raising ducks & got in touch with him. I didn't exactly think the whole thing through when I picked them up, so I have no idea what I would have done with 20 ducklings, but I didn't have to worry about it since they saved the day! The only gripe I have is their hours - only open until 5 on weekdays & Sat morning & no Sundays. So I really have to plan ahead to make sure I have a free Sat morning coinciding with when my food is running low. As I visited to replenish our bird feeding supplies this afternoon, I was reminded of 2 more reasons why I will remain a loyal GFS customer. I was about to purchase 20 lbs. of feed in 2 packages and my sales clerk, who was manually noting my purchase items on an invoice while also handling an incoming sales call, momentarily ceased what she was doing to suggest that I could purchase 25 lbs. of feed in one package for less than 20 lbs in 2 packages. Save more money aside from GFS's already low price? Heck yeah! Sign me up! As my sales clerk resumed her tasks, I was engaged in an internal debate about whether to report a recent first-time-ever service glitch pursuant to a brief encounter during my last visit (which after my original review). I soon realized that I was OBLIGED to do so, since I wrote about my GFS experiences to fairly offer feedback, and GFS should be afforded an opportunity to address and remedy the glitch that I encountered. So, I advised sales my clerk of the glitch. No exaggeration whatsoever; my sales clerk appeared to be genuinely distressed by my report, so much so, that I found myself assuring her that it was the first glitch that I have encountered in well over the 10 years that I have been a GFS customer. As we discussed details about what occurred, GFS's owner's daughter, herself a sales clerk, a shelf stocker, a floor sweep and pretty much whatever else a situation du jour may demand, overheard our interaction, and then she appeared even more distressed; crestfallen in fact. Both ladies readily offered their sincere apologies, assured me that I had a valid concern and that it would be promptly addressed. Both ladies asked, if I should ever encounter a service glitch, that I immediately advise someone at the desk so the glitch may be remedied to my satisfaction right then and there. THAT, dear reader, was excellence and grace through adversity in action, and it also why I upgraded my assessment of GFS from 4 stars (or, "Yay! I'm a fan.") to 5 (or "Woohoo! As good as it gets!") After all, can anyone reasonably demand better than a single service misstep, spanning well over 10 years, and a genuinely credible, empathetic and gracious response? Great for the better brands of dog food and cat food. They have a great selection of no-grain and all-meat brands for our more carnivorous furry friends. They don't have a huge variety of small mammal food (it's OK, it's not their specialty), but they have enough that I can get all my pet needs in one trip. Check out can take a little long if they have more than a couple customers in their small store, but again, that's just the type of store it is. I'm happy to make the extra trip here to get my specialty pet food. read more

I don't usually do a lot of reviews however after the fantastic customer service I received today to buy grass seed from a feed store the experience was one that will cause me to return to buy anything from this locally owned family feed store. I went in looking for advice on the type of grass seed for my type of lawn. New to the area I wasn't sure what would do best. I found the place busy with people buying dog food and supplies, but since early in the season for lawn was not a lot of people looking for what I needed. The clerk sent the owner out to help and wow it was great. He spent the time explaining the types of fertilizer along with how to prepare and best plant the grass to be successful. Not having done this before he also provided additional helpful information on how best to deal with the big trees. Not only that his prices were so reasonable I would highly recommend this business they have so much to offer. This store exemplifies why we all need to support our local stores and the kind of service you don't always receive from big box stores. I have been looking for hay bales all over Lake County. Someone mentioned Grayslake feed. I called and talked to the friendliest woman who confirmed they did have the bales there.
