The brown slatted architecture and design of Virginia Hills Shopping Center remind me of Countrywood Shopping Center in Walnut Creek: www.tinyurl.com/y73y9ntp That must have been the building style of the time. And for that reason, I have enjoyed stopping by here when visiting friends who live nearby. I've hung out outside chatting in the shade in front of Starbucks, which doesn't seem to have a rush. The main tenants are Safeway, on one end of the center, and CVS right in the middle of the center. Other tenants are tucked under the awning and span the length of the shopping center. Crystal Cleaners seems to have been in this location forever! Additional tenants: The UPS Store Bank of America Nails Spa and More Perfect Haircuts Home Thai Kitchen Mirch Indian Cuisine Subway Burger King Mariachi Mexican Grill Sunrise Health Center Pleasant Dental Chevron

The Chevron was on the corner. The rest of the strip mall was probably built prior to 1979. I worked there at Safeway through the entire construction. That Safeway Store number was 720, that number meant that it was a very old store. During the time that the strip mall was being built Safeway kicked out the front and side of the building making it much larger. At that point they gave the store a new number. It was 720 and they added a 9 to the front of the store number and eliminated the zero at the end making the new store number 972 which at that time reflected a much newer building.

I come to Pleasant Hill quite often since it's one of the closest neighboring cities to Concord…read more One of my most frequented shopping plazas is the Sandalwood Center. It's a tiny shopping center located off of Gregory lane right between the Contra Costa Canal trail and the nearby Zio Fraedo's restaurant. There are two main reasons why I frequent this Plaza: 1) La Mordida Mexican restaurant And 2) Mirage Nails I'm completely addicted to La Mordida! I started coming here over a year ago and it has quickly become my favorite hole in the wall Mexican spot! Recently, I discovered Mirage Nails next door and have started coming here to get my nails done. It's the perfect combo, right?! Pamper myself with a mani and then right after, pamper myself with some Mexican goodness. Yep... this is why I can't stay away from Sandalwood! I'll admit that I haven't visited any of the other businesses in this plaza quite yet, but there really isn't too much else going on in there. There's a bike shop across the way that's been for quite sometimes. There's also a fitness center, a yoga place, a day spa, and a liquor store. Not sure if I'll be visiting any of these businesses anytime soon, but I'm sure I'll end up hitting up a few of them in the future since I come to this shopping center about once a week or so. There's always parking available in their parking lot since this a plaza that is far less frequented than many others in the neighborhood. However, parking can be tight since the lot is small. All in all, it's a nice local shopping center with a great Mexican restaurant and a nice nail salon.

But I usually go here to go to the store on the way to Walnut Creek or on my way back home. I have walked around this spot, hoping to find another there, there, but there isn't one. I don't know what an update would look like, because it's so old and past it's time. And some of the places that I'd go to - there was a health store - gone, a burger joint - gone, the fancy, healthy food spot - gone, the cupcake spot - gone. You do have to pay for parking, but it's been safe. But still, metered parking in a "dying" shopping center? I'd think that they'd love to have people park. I've been to other places up and down the street and this is the only one where you have to pay! And they have one store, so I only pay for 15 minutes or so. But what a waste! I'd pay for a couple of hours and spend time bouncing from shop to shop, but that won't happen beecause everytime they get another shop of note, it closes down. This is an old school plaza and I want to like it more than I do. I wish they updated themselves, like El Cerrito Plaza. They have some of the same buildings, but built others. they have also updated their offerings and when something closes, another quality store joins them.
