Cycling shops can be slightly intimidating if you're like me and don't know a ton about bikes. Snooty bike mechanics are about as appealing to me as garlic ice cream. Fortunately I've had great experiences at Great Basin Bikes. Rich, the store owner, is clearly passionate about his business and has hired great staff. He's incredibly helpful and has great suggestions for rides and cycling groups. His website is full of great tips on rides, too. I'd rather just review a place on it's merits...but in the case of bike shops, it helps to compare as some bike shops try to bedazzle you with jargon and attitude, while others want to contribute to the universe of self-propulsion, fun, fitness and tapping into your inner 12 year old. Great Basin is solidly in the latter divsion. At College Cyclery, the owner, Randy, threw a fit at me requesting to see stems with the intention of re-fitting my girlfriend's bike to give her a more relaxed position. He insisted on a $125 fitting. I said that we'd just like to look at shorter, more upright stems and would see what works. He threw a mini-tantrum. Like a child, he agrily threw our some measurment specs to confuse and bewilder me saying, "well if YOU'RE the fitting expert, YOU tell ME what she needs!". I spent 5 years tuning, fixing and fitting bikes for a bike touring company, so could have gone to the mat with him. Instead we walked out and wisely headed to Great Basin Bicycles. At Great Basin we were told how personal a fit can be depending on the need of the rider and were sold 2 stems to try. "Which ever one you don't like, just bring it back, we'll worry about re-zip tying it to the packaging". Perfect palate cleanser after the bitter taste of College Cyclery. I am a pretty average bike user which is why I brought my bike into GBB to get a tuneup and the tires replaced. My bike seemed to be in pretty bad shape (horrible shifting) when I brought it in. Two new tires + tubes, a tuneup and they even replaced a broken gear on my rear shifter all for about $140. I would definitely recommend GBB for anyone needing a tuneup. read more

Just moved to Reno (from Portland, OR) and decided to get back into mountain biking. Customer Service! I am in intermediate road and mountain biker, who is also an engineer. I went in to GBB and had a dynamic bike fitting with Adam. What an experience. Adam, who is far younger and far better a cyclist, was the best. He was technical enough for the engineer to be engaged in efficiency and more than patient with the cyclist in me to improve my riding ability. He treated me as a person on a bike rather than just the bike. I highly recommend the fit for anyone wanting to improve their time and distance as well as prevent injury. THESE GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!! I got into triathlons this year and wouldn't have finished my Ironman without them. They not only retrofitted my road bike with aero bars, but they also gave me a quick course on how to fix a flat. I also took a lesson with Rich to improve my riding which boosted my average speed up from 14mph to 18mph. I'm a better rider and more knowledgeable cyclist because of them. I just almost finished building a mountain bike that I started at least 10 years ago. It is a cross country race bike that weighs around 21 pounds, and I only needed a seat post to finally complete it. I called a few shops around town, and Rich at Great Basin said he had 2 available at $20.00 each. I stopped by 3 days later just before they closed, and chose one. When I went to pay for it, I realized that I left my credit card next to my computer earlier when I made an online purchase. Rich was so cool; he told me to call with the payment info the next morning, which I did, but I was able to finish the bike that night without having to make a second trip back to the shop. This is why it pays to buy local, and why I recommend shopping at Great Basin Cycles. BTW, that was my second time shopping there in 15 years; Rich didn't know me, so it was especially nice of him to let me walk out of the store owing money. If you plan on going mountain biking, their website has a good assortment of downloadable topo maps of rides in Reno, Sparks, Carson, Tahoe, and even out of the area. The maps include great directions, descriptions and tips for the routes. Great Basin has a selection of new bikes, and it has a service dept. They will get my business in the future, and I recommend that Rich and his staff get yours as well. Find them on S. I had a broken shifter on my bike, so I took my bike to the shop where I had purchased it. They said it needed to be replaced and they would try to get it replaced through the warranty. Waited a week, no word from them. Called and was told the tech in charge of my bike was out for three days and that he'd call me. No word from him. Call again. It's now been three weeks. I'm told by the tech he hasn't been able to get on the Shimano website. Maybe he'll try to call them. I took it to Rich at Great Basin the next day. He fixed my bike while we waited! Great support and service. I'll never go to another shop again. read more

These guys know their stuff. I had been going to another bike shop that could not get rid of the creek in my bike. The other shop kept charging me for stuff and each time it was obvious they never checked to see if the creek was gone. I know creeks are hard to find sometimes and to get rid of but the guys at Great Basin did just that. It was a simple fix that they diagnosed quickly, fixed inexpensively and they made sure the creek was gone before I even came back to their store. I will take my bikes there from now. Took a dive on my bike and had a bent rim and broken post and saddle. Brought the bike in just before closing time and they received it after rushing me out the door. That was fine, glad to at least get it in there for service. Was told that the rim replacement would be about $60. Sounded fine to me. I called them up the next business day that they are open to see if they had taken a look at it yet. They had not, but told me they would give me a call back. I missed their call which was about an hour later and called them back an hour after that. I talked to the owner Steve on the phone. He said, "The bike is ready and it will be $133." I was quite surprised. I said "The last time I talked to someone they said they would call me back with a quote". AND HERE IS WHERE I WAS FLOORED. THE OWNER, STEVE, SAID "WELL, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT WE CAN TAKE ALL THE NEW PARTS OFF FOR YOU, AND PUT YOUR OLD BROKEN PARTS BACK ON, NO PROBLEM." WTF? Who says something like that to a customer? You know, I was happy that they had gotten the work done. But I wanted to know what my options were for the rim and saddle since there is a lot of different ways to go with rims and saddles. But the decisions were made for me and at no point was I ever consulted about the replacements. When I went in to pick up the bike I decided to tell them I was not happy with what was said. Their answer "Well, I don't think there is anything we can say now to make it better." Really? They had a chance to make it right. I NEVER EVER RECEIVED AN APOLOGY. Actually, that's all I really wanted. I would have liked to hear "Sorry, we were far too proactive in fixing your bike and did not consult with you at all. What can we do to make this right for you?" BUT THAT WAS NEVER SAID. ALL I GOT WAS A COCKY ARROGANT ATTITUDE. I am quite shocked too. I read all the reviews and never has anyone left a bad one. I just calls them as I sees them. Best service I've ever received at a bike store. I went in to check out their selection of Santa Cruz bikes, and one of the guys that helped me was more than happy to answer everything I threw at him. He spent about 45 minutes or more with me, letting me test ride many different bikes and telling me specifics on each one. He was genuinely kind, knowledgeable and very helpful. When I left, the whole store's employees looked up and waved goodbye. Where do you find service like this? Only here I think, and that's from a guy who has been to a lot of stores in the bay area. Sure, there are some good choices in San Franisco, Oakland, etc. but I'm more than happy to drive the distance to give these guys my money because they deserve it. They deserve to stay in business to teach everyone else how to run a bike store. read more

So I bought a 2010 Redline D600 29er on March 23, 2010. On May 14, 2013 I was riding home and the bolt that secures my saddle to the seat post completely sheared off. I went to eight different places before this bicycle shop to find a replacement bolt. I even went to Polaris and KTM dealers, and R&E Fasteners to name a few. This bolt turned out to be a M7x40mm with a 1.0mm pitch. Redline told me in this case, these bolts were made by a third party manufacturer rather than in house, and they are rarely in production anymore. So after the staff on duty in the shop did about five minutes of web searching, they took a look inside their stash of random assorted parts. By pure luck, they found a seat post that was the same diameter as my stock Redline seat post. The seat post they found had two M6 bolts that allow for adjustment; as compared to my original seat post that only had one bolt. This bike shop also spoiled me by giving me this seat post for free. So the fact that instead of their recommending another place for me to buy a replacement bolt, they solved the problem a different way by a seat post. I recommend this place :-) read more

I love Great Basin and Rich, the owner. He has been a fixture in the Reno bike scene since the 90's when he was an employee of Great Basin over on Virginia and Plumb. He knows his stuff and really likes riding. And the selection of maps and trails on the website is pretty daunting really. To say he's burned through a few pairs of bike shorts would be a gross understatement. I would have given the place 5 stars, but on my last visit to Reno I went in to take a look at a new Yeti SB66. But there was no 66 for me to mount and ride around the parking lot like I had gotten off at exit 28 and paid up good money to do some other sort of riding. GB is the only place in Reno with a Yeti franchise. However, there were only 3 demo Yetis on the floor. Two ASR-5's and one 575. I know times are tough, and Yetis are high end and high overhead, but pretty please, Rich, get me some SB66's! read more

The staff was very friendly & knowledgable. There was something wrong with my chain slipping and making grinding noises when shifting. I took it in and they looked at it right away, worked on it, and had me test it out, they fixed it right up and showed me what was going on. These guys are great. I had had trouble with the cycle shop closest to us (Steamboat Pkwy Damonte Ranch area) and was looking for some patient, knowledgeable folks. The owner of Great Basin is right there to spend as much time as necessary to explain things and to help out with your bike. The rest of the staff are also stellar. After being treated rudely by the other shop, and after being told it would take a week to change out the brake cable, Great Basin had us in on the spot and had it finished in less than half an hour. They sell Cannondale and some other brands -- no Specialized, though, if that is what you are looking for, although of course they service any brand. They are not too much farther of a drive for us and definitely worth the trip. read more

Feel like I got scammed. 1 year ago I went in to GB bicycles to trade in my full suspension mountain bike. They put me in a 19 inch Marin hybrid bike. I asked the owner/manager if he thought the bike was too big but he said that he wouldn't go any smaller. I tried to ride this bike for a year but I kept falling off the bike because the frame was too big. Feeling embarrassed and angry, I went back in to see if I could trade it in for something that fits. After an employee there confirmed that the bike was way too big for me, he said he would talk to the owner. The owner came back with a horrible offer that wouldn't even pay for a bike the sales guy labelled a "geezer bike." Needless to say I decided to sell my bike on Craigslist. When I was looking for a description of my bike on the website I found out that he sold me 2011 model bike in March of 2012. This bike was probably lying around his shop for a year and he saw an opportunity to get rid of it. He took advantage of a buyer with little knowledge. Just to confirm what I was thinking I went to two separate bike shops and told them the size of my bike frame. Both shops were astonished that I was riding a 19 inch frame.
