Half of this shop is firearms the other half is coinage. I went there to turn in some of my brother's coins to help pay for his cremation. I learned a lot, they were very well informed on the coins I turned in and they even tested them for the silver and or gold content in front of me. I've been going to Great Northern Guns since working in Downtown Anchorage as an Accounts Manager since 1996. Sadly Frank ( the store manager) was fired in July of this year (2019) and Yog ( The Troglodite) who sits on His Fat Duff & Insults & Pontificates to All who would Listen......has been made the "Defacto" In Franks Absence....They were always a High end Gun Store with Very HI-End ( Read Over Blue Book Prices),.....And as of Late My Relationship has been going down hill with this shop... The Only Bright Spot is "Jeff", The Very Knowledgeable, Gentle Giant who also works there & Has a Wealth & Lifetime of Experience & Customer Service.... Sadly tho', I also got Another Dose today of Joe (the Owner, now in his most senile 80's) Lack of Business Savvy & Lack of Customer Skills.....Since going there in the '90's I'd estimate I've spent well in excess of $25,000 U.S Hard earned dollars over the Years, but today Joe told Me that he sold a, 1888 rifle to some Old Lady in FLA who wanted a "Civil War" (1861-1865) rifle for the princely sum of $2,200.00, BECAUSE He Met her in a BAR.... Worst gun shop in Alaska. One of the salesmen "Yoag" (spelling) was suppose to call and hold the next Wilson Combat 1911 the shop got in for me to buy. No matter the price. ALL three times, while this guy is telling me about the pistol over the phone, he stopped and said "oh wait, there is someone here that wants to buy it." And click he hangs up. After the third time of him wasting my time, I told him to lose my number. I went over to Wild West Guns and got the Wilson Combat I wanted in 10 minutes. Furthermore, the prices of firearms in this store are usually over priced by 20%-25% compared to the other gun shops in the area. Also, a 20% commission when every other shop in town only charges %10 is ridiculous. I will never buy a firearm from this store. *UPDATE to Jeff N that made the desperate redirect reply below this post...I still have the messages and phone call recordings from Yoag saved if you feel the need to hear proof. I can post them on YouTube if you would like. However, that wouldn't be in your best interest. Nice try, yet again your lack of customer service is evidenced by your defensive attitude, lies and....excuses. Pathetic. Occasionally, I go to GNG to look for some harder to find gun part. I always end up leaving annoyed with the people working there without buying anything. Their prices on everything are expensive and I've had bad experiences arguing with staff about this or that. A lot of gun places could take a hint from this respectable/respectful business. They treat you right, and I like that. I bought a Marlin .30-30 from them back in January, was a good first Lever gun buying experience. The carry a lot of great stuff (a fantastic place for lever guns). They have a fantastic .22 selection. I have to do a little more shopping around but their prices seem to be decent to a little high. I think my next rifle will be a Henry Big Boy .44 carbine, a rifle I know they have. I will do my due diligence on shopping around, but honestly I'd pay a little more at their store for their quick, friendly service. I can appreciate knowledgeable guys like the one's who work at Great Northern Guns. Too often gun counters and gun shops can be a bad place for new gun owners (which is freeing ridiculous...) Though I haven't had any extensive conversations with these guys, I feel that they are a good place to pick up your first rifle, or at least look around and ask questions. read more

Doing business here is preferable compared to a big box store. I wouldn't consider myself a novice, but im not a "gun guy" either. The staff is knowledgeable and they don't give off snake oil salesman vibes. Some people are put off by Yog(who's personality is as large as his body). That being said, when a sale is made he takes the time to demonstrate how each fire arm is assembled, disassembled and how it actually functions, before the customer leaves. That's customer service and due diligence, not an insult to anyone's intelligence. It's worth a walkthrough just to see some cool old stuff if nothing else. read more

I went into Great Northern Guns on a lazy Sunday afternoon about two weeks ago looking for my first firearm for self-defense reasons. I was immediately greeted by Yag and Jeff (the owners of the store, from what I understand). There was a cat curled up on the countertop -- a good sign in my book -- and a friendly customer (a regular, I assume) was there shooting the breeze with the store owners. Despite the fact that I had no intention of buying a firearm that day (I told them this, outright, while we were talking) and that I did not know the first thing about a gun, Yag and Jeff took their time and walked me through the various things I should consider in my purchase. Not once did I ever feel hurried nor rushed, and they patiently explained to me the pros and cons of the rifles and pistols they were recommending. The regular that was sitting in a chair by the door even pitched in from time to time to offer his own perspective. After spending the next week visiting other shops with various degrees of success, and speaking with several friends of mine who were gun aficionados and former police officers, I ultimately decided to return to Great Northern Guns to give them my business. Yag was busy with another customer, but he handed me over to a younger fellow who was every bit as competent, friendly and welcoming as Yag and Jeff were the week before. He ran me through the purchase of my firearm and all the necessary accessories, and was never pushy about anything. All around, I had a great experience with Great Northern Guns. As a complete newbie, I never felt like I was receiving anything but the respect of the staff and as a middle school teacher with nearly 15 years of teaching experience, I always felt that I was being given the information necessary to make my purchase in an honest and straightforward manner. While it was clear that each gentleman behind the counter had their own preferences when it came to firearms choices, each was very respectful and attentive of my needs and helped me make an informed decision. I ended up spending about $750 and am confident that I made a good one, thanks to the help of everyone on the staff. Great folks work here. They're friendly without being pushy. Very wide selection of firearms. They carry the cleaning supplies, such as Barristol, that I need. Also, I have to disagree about the comments about Mr. Yog. Some folks just don't tolerate foolish behavior in their store. I've been "flagged" by folks waving the muzzle of a gun around in the big box stores and seen how little the staff can do. Never been "flagged" at Great Northern Guns; enforcing standards of behavior around firearms is essential. read more

Reading some of these past reviews, I am honestly in shock. I would give more than 5 stars if I could. This is the ONLY gun shop that will ever get my business. They are extremely knowledgeable, over-and-above helpful and informative, and the only gun shop that has treated me, a woman, with the utmost respect and concern. My 1st experience with purchasing a gun was only a couple years ago...my husband became interested in a particular gun and I knew he wouldn't buy it for himself. I called around to every gun store in Anchorage to see if they had it in stock or could order it so I could get it for him as a gift. I kid you not, each place I called...they were rude, short with me like they had better things to do, and treated me like an idiot (I didn't know the specifics about the gun other than the make/model and wasn't sure what options my husband might want). I was feeling pretty deflated...one guy almost had me in tears. I was about to give up, but I had one last place to check so what the hell. I called GNG and not only were my questions answered, but they treated me like an adult! I was so relieved! I ended up going in and throughout the entire purchase process I was given info about the gun and available accessories, I was treated with respect, and experienced really excellent customer service. Fast forward a bit. Yesterday, my second experience at GNG was the best retail experience of my life (and I'm a SHOPPER). My husband and I went in just to browse. We had an idea of what we wanted, but not the exact make/model. We gave some parameters to Jeff and he showed us a variety of pieces. Aside from taking our money, that's usually where customer service ends. But not at GNG! Jeff spent so much time helping us, I honestly started to feel bad for taking up so much of his time. Not only did he explain every piece - the pros, cons, available customizations - he helped me with some handling techniques that I've never really been able to get right. I'm a woman with small hands, not a lot of strength, and I'm not blessed in the coordination department. After a few minutes, Jeff had me feeling so much more confident handling the guns. Also, once we decided on one, he showed us how to take it apart, clean it, and gave us some useful tips. He then handed it to me and made ME take it apart to make sure I could do it. After noticing a couple things I was still struggling with, he offered to swap out some pieces for us to make it easier for me to use. And not in a pushy-sales pitch kind of way...it was a genuine concern for my satisfaction and ability to use the gun easily and safely. I'm telling you, I left there on cloud-nine. Not only did we get a new gun that I am SUPER excited about, but I also learned some new techniques, and got a gun anatomy lesson. No extra charge! My guess is that either the negative reviewers are seriously unhappy with life in general, they have some sort of interest/involvement with a competitor, or maybe there used to be a really big asshole that worked at GNG and no longer does? Maybe they should've asked for Jeff... Other things to note: Ammo prices were better than the big chain stores. Gun prices are reasonable...some were better than big chain stores. Great selection of accessories, ammo, books, etc. They have a resident KITTY!!! That alone makes me love the place... read more

I used to do business with this place in the mid 80s and got tired of the poor customer service so I swore......swore I would never go back its been 30 years, Well I just happened to be driving by today and needed some work done on a pistol and after doing a google search for gunsmiths this place came up with others so I decided to (I can't believe it) give them another chance well I walked in and a guy was helping a man with scopes another guy was putting price tags on packages and some guy was sitting on a chair so I stood there for a little bit and no one said anything I didn't want to interrupt the salesman but there was the other guy right there and the guy in the chair reached over in front of me and poured him self a cup of coffee from the pot sitting there so I thought Id break the silence and asked him hows the coffee? he looks up at me with a scowl and says JUST DRINK IT? what the fu-- sorry so I walked over and stood there for a good 10 minuets and no one said a word....completely ignored. Well another guy walks out from the back and I spoke up and asked if he was the gunsmith? No we haven't had one since the 80s, I mentioned well thats about the last time I was here I said......Oh why is that, It took everything I had to keep my mouth shut I was more mad at myself for stopping I swore.....swore I would never stop there...well Im a slow learner but I can learn. They did give me the location of a gunsmith and then tried to sell me a gun unbelievable no its believable. I guess what Im saying there's plenty of shops out there If I can change one persons choice thank you. Well I may have over reacted about the coffee guy that told me to Just Drink It! I didn't stop to think that he's probably been sitting there for God knows how long waiting for some help? Sorry! Stopped in after having lunch at nearby Noodle World and I was impressed at the wide selection of firearms/accessories they had. The staff is friendly, low key, and knowledgeable. Joe, the owner, introduced himself and said he started the business 45 yrs ago. The store has an Alaskan cabin in the woods feel to it. They are big proponents of Ruger, but my partner ended up buying a Sig Sauer P238 and I bought a case for my tactical shotgun and some 9mm ammo (hard to find). I am happy to give them repeat business because of the good vibe and seeing the many loyal customers they have filing in and out. Keep up the good work! read more

I like this place. The staff is helpful and it's ok just to browse. They have a lot of firearms, ammo and accessories. Looking for an old gun? They got it. Looking for the latest and greatest tactical handgun, shotgun or AR? They got it. Prices for guns are just like everywhere else. High. But, they have good customer service, they're open 7-days a week, they're good dudes and I'd rather go here thank you any box store like Cabelas or Sportsman's Warehouse. read more

Yog, the employee who helped me, was friendly, courteous, professional and knowledgeable. He answered my questions and showed me a variety of pistols meeting the criteria I was looking for. Went in for the first time (moved to AK last summer) yesterday. Saw a few customers and thought, oh no, this will be quite a wait. In fact, I was greeted very shortly after walking in and received almost immediate help. The gentleman was very friendly and courteous and answered all of my questions. He joked with my kids and wife and was a real pleasure to talk to. His co-worker was also very friendly and helpful and went out of his way to make a recommendation on a restaurant and send me the location! Wow! You can't really expect better service than that and I'll now be a consistent customer of GNG. So often in gun stores around the country, you're met with staff that seem annoyed at best and utterly rude and arrogant at worst, and seem to have trouble "lowering themselves" to their ignorant customers. That was NOT AT ALL the case here - great people, great service. Even thanked my wife and I for our military service on the way out - very kind of them. read more

I won't stoop to his level. And describe him. But let's just say he has no reason to be such a cocky, arrogant asshole. He's the worst offender. But there's a couple of other staff who are almost as bad. He assumes that anyone who isn't a good old boy. Is clueless about firearms. I'll never forget the first time I looked at that store. Yog saw me eyeing the selection of 1911's, and decided I'm a dumbass. So I indulged him. Not that he ever left his stool. And let him "teach" me about 1911's. " this gun is a 1911. And it shoots a 45 caliber bullet," really? I said. Is that different than a 22? I'm new. He than talks down to me. " yes, but you don't want what's in the case, you want an ed Baer, and I can get you a tour of their custom shop on the east coast". My response was " that is tempting, but I'm happy with my kimber. That I have strapped to my side." Then I laughed and left. I wrote it off as a one time thing. He has a short memory. But the next time I was browsing. His cocky ass tried again, as I was looking at ARs, pushes the SCAR on me, like he does everyone. And tried explaining the 5.56 round to me. Your goddamn right I would give you zero stars. read more

The guys here have always been super helpful, knowledgeable, and kind. Their prices on some guns are better than Cabelas. They work hard to compete with the big name stores like Cabelas and Sportsman's Warehouse, but they definitely are worth checking out. It's definitely important to support local businesses as well. There's a tall guy with a deep voice that works here, nicest guy I've ever dealt with, I think his name is Jeff. Thanks to him, I'll never do business with any of the big box stores again, prices are slightly higher than some places, but they have more quality guns and they go above and beyond when helping the customer. they're the only place in town that had .22 ammo when the scare was on, great selection of classic rifles and they have a HUGE selection of high end pistols. lots of high end ar's tactical shotguns, hunting shotguns and .22's. I only wish they had a bigger store, it gets a little tight, and I'd like to see more used guns in the south end of the store. I don't understand the bad reviews, never had a bad experience. There's a heavy set fella that can be a little gruff, but he knows his stuff and he took me through the entire case of pistols showing me the strengths of some and the weaknesses of others.
