Some items at Yang Win 珠成 Gift Shop are pricey because they're carefully handcrafted and stored in perfect condition. The store has been maintaining with the right temperature and humidity as the hardwood loves. When you walk in the store, expect to see lots of warning signs "don't touch" 不要摸. No kidding. Our hands have oil, unless you wash them with soap well. Oil and sweat would damage the luster on the wood. So, just look. The shopkeepers speak Chinese Mandarin and Cantonese. I've never seen anyone other than Chinese come in. So, I don't know how they interact with you. I often come here to buy "high end" gifts with Chinese taste. But they tend to leave me along. That's okay. Just lately, the temperature is rising outside. There's no change inside. So I sweat more than ever. Oh well. I'll come back when it's cooler.

When…read moreI stopped in last week, they were gearing up for the opening of the Richard Serra exhibition at the Menil Collection. That was OK, as Gayle and I saw a nice selection of his work at the Guggenheim in Bilbao Spain last October. Or as the person working the bookstore desk mentioned, Richard Serra is having his moment. The Menil Collection Bookstore also stocks some Rothko Chapel stuff, but surprisingly nothing regarding the Byzantine Fresco Chapel, considering that fabulous art's imminent return to Cyprus. At the same time, this place is a fun and educational browse and within its eclectic offerings, there is artistic treasure to be found.
