I am glad Half Price Books moved to Westchase Shopping Center between Whole Foods and Petco. Because I frequent these stores. First time here, I was to check out the book buy process. My first impression was the mixture of book smells. I couldn't take it at first. Then, I gradually getting used to the used book smell. The reason I was here so many times was because I heard they buy books. I brought a box full of books and I got one page of $10 back. Then, I came back to bring more hard bound books, CD's, DVD's and a first-generation Nintendo Game Boy. I guess they worth something... Woohoo! I am gonna go home and dig out all my books and stuff. I'll be back to get more sold. Sometimes we value books sitting on the bookshelves. But sometimes they sat there to collect dust. I am the one that allow them to be part of my home decor and not reading them. It was such a great idea to bring them to Half Price Books and get value out of them. This store is conveniently located in a shopping center with Petco, Whole Foods, Target, Taco Cabana and other retailers. I am not a big reader, but I heard HPB buys books, records, magazines, and other types of media. While cleaning out a relative's home, I decided to pack some books in boxes and take them to HPB to see if they might have any value. I originally opted to donate them at my local library. Unfortunately, most libraries do not have the space to house much outside of what they already have in stock. I made an appointment with HPB and took all the boxes, 9 (NINE) to be exact, no exaggeration. After I unloaded the boxes, they ask you to remain in the store until your offer is ready. All the items I took in for review were dated from the late 40's through 2010. I took in records, old magazines and a lot of books (A LOT!). My appointment started at 5:30 pm. at 7:14 PM, I was called over the PA system to review my offer. I was afraid some items wouldn't "make the cut" and I would have to load them back into my car and once again be on the search of where to put them next. The lady who was assisting me said they would be glad to take it all and donate or recycle what couldn't be used. That sounded fair and convenient, so I was pleased. Then came the offer... $62.90 for all the items. I wasn't expecting thousands, nor did I have any special attachment to these items, but $62.90?? I don't claim to know much about what was being sold, but I do know some of the items were worth more than my offer. In hindsight, I should have taken small loads in at a time or maybe even better, I should have found a dealer who specializes in older media. Bottom line, I was tired of waiting, and I just wanted to be done with it. I'm disappointed, not because I needed the money or wasn't willing to part ways with the items; it's more of the effort and time I took to only get $62.90 for everything. I think it was a rip off. Side note: as I waited for my offer, I looked around the store. They had an old Teen Beat type magazine with the Beatles on the cover. The one displayed was in the same shape as the two I was selling, but mine were 2 years older; older meaning worth more, I would think. Theirs was selling for $30.00. I wouldn't expect to get $30.00 for mine (I understand they have to make a profit), but you would think my total would be higher with those 2 valuable items. In the mix of all my other items was records from artists like Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. If the books were worth much, I would think the records would be. I wish they would have a system to break it down and show you what each piece was worth. Oh well... lesson learned. I will never waste my time like that again. After you accept an offer, they print a receipt for you to take to the front to cash or trade it in for merchandise in the store. The store itself is clean, the staff are all friendly, and they have a large selection. They will also order books for you from their other HPB stores within the metroplex and have them sent to your local HPB at no charge. If you decide you don't like the book after it arrives in the store, you don't have to pay for it. All in all, I most likely won't return. I would be a peeved if I strolled through the store and saw some of the items I sold. They were older and rare, so I know I would recognize them instantly. I hope this review helps others. Great first time experience! We arrived around 6PM on Sunday. Walked around about ten minutes trying to find what we were there for. Got smart and asked someone...she led me right to what I was looking for! We also found many items we were not there for! Sometimes you need to treat yourself when shopping for others! It truly is "half-price.". I thought to look for several things I had in my "the big A" Saved for Later cart. HPB had the item and it was half off. Technically this was the Half Price Books on Westheimer and Kirkwood, I love this new location bus it is much bigger than the old one, but the staff are still as nice and helpful. What I love about Half Price Books is that you can sell your old books, CDs, DVDs, comics, boardgames, to them and they will make an offer the same day and you will get cash not store credit. I can read these guys like a book, a half price book at that, and they can't stand me - or a lot of their other customers. They're closing down now (demolished since I wrote this), and while I'm sorry to see that, there are plenty of other locations of HPB, just not in this quirky lovely neighbourhood, so Barbi will be sad and many others will be sad. But I personally was abused and mistreated by the staff members here on three separate occasions, and I'm referring to at least two different staff members. Both older white males who were behaving not in a way that you would expect bookstore employees to behave, not in a way a human should behave honestly. Needless to say I was very disappointed by this behaviour and stopped shopping here promptly, as did others I know for similar incidents, and we all started using alternative purchase places for books and whatnot. I. Was. Excited. All the Half Price Books close to me closed so running across this one made me happy. Kind of. Went in early afternoon so it was rather quiet. It's a smaller store and very very organized. I went in the for the vinyls and only found 1. There are tons of oldies but not necessarily goodies. Walked around a bit and there was a counter in the back (maybe where you sell books) and I asked the staff back there if they could help me find a book. She looked it up, said the system showed 1 and walked me over and found the book. Winning! Great service. I lent the original copy to a friend and never got it back so was happy to find it. And half price. Browsed the kids section and the gifts/journals etc section and found a few things. Fortunately for my bank account, I couldn't spend a lot of time in here so I decided to call it quits early and went to check out. This is the part where the experience goes from 3/4 stars to 2 stars. There is a short line. When my turn comes, the cashier leans like her whole body on the counter to scan my items. Her elbows on the counters are basically holding her up. Weird. Doesn't say much to me. The tap on the card machine didn't work the first time and she kind of sighed loudly when she had to show me. I was buying 5 items and asked for a bag. She pointed to the ground where there were boxes and what looked like paper bags and said, that's all we have and shrugged. I literally just saw her put a lady's stuff in a plastic bag right before me. I wasn't impressed at all with her service. She was pleasant to the 2 ladies ahead of me and lost her umph when it was my turn. So needless to say, I love Half Price so I'll probably come back but I'll be prepared next time. I used to take weekly trips to Half Price books, when there were two locations within about a mile from me. It's been a long time since I've stepped foot in a store because it's so inconvenient now. I wanted to find a couple of books on photography, so I made the trip out there. It was worth the trip, though it was a haul for me. The used books are a great bargain. I found many beautiful art books and settled on a couple. The new books are 20% off, which is better than full price, but definitely not half priced and not reason enough for me to drive that far. I think there are some treasures here and it's a good place to shop if you are open to what you might find and not set on one particular title. read more

I read books sometimes. Half Price has books all the time. On Labor Day weekend, they had a 20% off sale all weekend, technically making them 30% Price Books. How can you resist that? How?! Hooow?!?! I've been coming to Half Price Books for years, and I have always left with a smile on my face. My journey here started years ago when I had the bright idea to turn my spare bedroom into a library. I lined the walls with bookcases, and started visiting Half Price Books to fill the cases. I started with my favorite genre, mystery, and would buy 5 to 10 books at a time. I bought paperback and hardback books. Prices ranged from $1.99 to $9.99, which was great considering the regular price of a paperback book started at $5.99 depending on how recent the book was released. This store has every genre of books you can think of. They have mystery, fantasy, crime, comedy, biographies, children books, learning books, religious book...the list goes on. They even have calendars, stuffed animals and thank you cards. There is something for every age group. If you enjoy reading and still like the old school comfort of holding a real book, then I urge you to purchase your books here. I promise you will find a book that's just for you. Side bar... The books I sold were in good condition and pretty relevant with the time period. I should've done my research first when deciding to sell my books here. Did a test.. I bought 10 books and spent 87.56. Went back a week later to see what they would buy them back for and offered me $1.30. What a joke. Would rather them not waste people's time on buying books back. At least have another option of a store credit that you know you are keeping your loyal customers. My review is based on having a book transferred from one of their other locations. Easy enough process for the employee to find it and order it for me. This was on a Sunday, I think, he told me it would be in by Thursday since their transfers were done on Thursdays but by the latest it would be that weekend. Good with me. So I called the following week because I never heard from them(left my phone number and they were to text me). The girl that answered the phone says no it would be in by this weekend(of the current week)....hmm. Ok I'll wait for the notification. So here we are almost 2 weeks later and still no notification. I called today and was told it could take 1-2 weeks and still not in. I said it had already been that long and so he checked again and told me that my book had come in but shelved because I did not come to get it and it is not on the shelf any longer. Holy moly. I agree with Sheira H... back in the days before Amazon, Half Price Books was great. But I rarely want to pay the price they are asking for the random books they have in stock. It's fun to wonder around and look at the clearance stuff, though I didn't find anything to buy. I just enjoy looking at the video games and dvds for cheap, and perhaps one day I'll actually buy something here. Oh... it also bugs me that political pundit commentary is classified as "political science" but books on international relations are "military," and books on the presidency are "history..." and it's not even that consistent. read more
