I was a first-time patient when I came in for a tooth extraction. Before the procedure, I was subjected to relentless attempts to upsell me on additional treatment until I firmly stated that I wanted only the extraction. At the time, I had active Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage and paid my approximately $200 copay in full. Two months later, Aspen sent me a text message notifying me that I owed approximately $1,500. When I called, they claimed my insurance had "termed." I knew this was false, so I contacted BCBS. The rep confirmed I had active coverage on the date of service and called Aspen directly. During that call, BCBS determined that Aspen had submitted the claim using the wrong Tax ID because the dentist who treated me was a temporary provider. BCBS explained to Aspen how to correct the claim. I assumed the matter was resolved. Two months later, Aspen sent me another text that I owed the same $1,500. I contacted the office and was again told I had no insurance on the date of service. An employee escalated the matter to the office manager, who (get this) then claimed BCBS had told Aspen that I was uninsured. This was a blatant lie and directly contradicted what BCBS had told both me and Aspen in the call. I explained this, but was nonetheless told I needed to call BCBS again. The employee abruptly hung up on me. I called BCBS a second time. Once again, they confirmed my coverage and, while I was on the phone, called Aspen directly. Déjà vu: Aspen had again submitted the claim with the wrong Tax ID. The BCBS representative once again explained to the office manager that the problem resulted from the temporary dentist and how to correct it. The office manager was curt and rude and seemed confused about the basic billing issue, as if it were her first day on the job. She did not apologize or take responsibility and I'm not sure she even comprehended what she was told. As of today, Aspen's portal still shows that I owe approximately $1,500, despite BCBS twice confirming my coverage and twice contacting Aspen directly to explain the error. I should not have to spend hours repeatedly correcting a billing mistake that Aspen made, nor should I have to argue with them about whether I had insurance when my insurer has repeatedly confirmed that I did. The billing incompetence is bad enough; the dismissive and hostile treatment made it substantially worse. Based on this experience, I would not trust this office with either my dental care or billing. Avoid it like the plague.
