Pros as a patient for about 3-4 years who so far has needed only routine services: communicative front desk, phenomenal hygienists, consistently run on time, some Friday availability, equipment and patient rooms very up to date. It's true that for routine care the majority of your time is with the hygienist. In my experience this has become pretty standard practice for dentists and I don't personally mind. Dr. Eckel checks in at the end of the appointment, is efficient and polite, always asks whether you have any questions. Cons: Allow extra time to park. Ongoing construction nearby plus busier days around the office complex have made things tricky--sometimes I find parking right away, sometimes it can take me up to 10 minutes. read more

My husband and I were patients of Dr. Eckel for several years. During that time we only saw the doctor briefly, barely a glance. We have excellent dental insurance, and already had excellent teeth, prior to seeing him. We actually felt that we only were there to see the hygienist, since we only saw Dr. Eckel, in passing. While he appears personable, his business practices are anything but. First started when he tried to charge us for an appointment his mother had made for us, before the 6 months between appointments. She was answering the phone and (he admitted) did not know to check. Since we were only seen there, they knew when we were to be seen again. He stated she didn't know how to do the appointment, yet he was going to charge us, until we said no. Later, we tested positive for COVID prior to our appointments. We called and were told that there would be a fifty dollar cancellation fee. We asked for clarification that it was fifty dollars, all together, as there were 2 of us. It was confirmed. We later got a text saying it was, in fact, one hundred dollars. We phoned several times, left messages, and were not given the courtesy of a reply. We instead got a nasty text from his office stating that he had given us a break before (when his mother clearly made the mistake) so, we were to pay the fee, including the extra fifty dollars. We truly have no idea if he is good at dentistry, since we never really saw him. Though, we are sure our dental insurance was billed as if we did, for years. We can attest to his business practices. He does not care if he keeps good patients. We can only think that his temper gets the best of him. What other reason to treat good patients like he did. He is a shady business man. They literally beg you to leave good reviews. And, text you the same after the visit! Avoid at all costs. read more

I've used Dr.Eckel for several years now, and until I needed something more complex, I was pleased with the service I received. He was always just fine, but his team was very friendly, and my hygienist always did a great job. However, I needed a new crown for a dental implant. Dr.Eckel looked at it and said it was a "slam dunk." But unfortunately, that was not the case. After two months, four office visits, missed work, and a pile of (refunded) cash, I left - literally - without a front tooth. On the first visit, I mentioned that I wished my teeth were a bit whiter. He said he would make the new crown a few shades whiter and that I could whiten my teeth at home while the crown was being produced. This made sense at the time, but I later discovered that the correct procedure is to whiten first and then pick out the color after whitening. Additionally, he was not particularly confident in his color selection. He kept asking what I thought, and it felt like he pushed the decision onto me. I do not work in dentistry and have little experience picking out tooth color. It felt like this decision required his expertise, and so I was a bit uncomfortable providing the amount of feedback/direction he required. This should have been a red flag... The day I was scheduled to go back to have the crown placed, they called me several hours before my appointment to tell me that it was delayed and that they needed to reschedule. I had taken paid time off from work for this appointment, and while I understand things happen, a bit of notice would have been nice so I could have gone to work/made money. When he put the first tooth in, the color was way off. It looked grey. To keep a long story short, he attempted this two more times. He was very uncomfortable/unsure which color to pick each time. Meanwhile, I secured the crown in my mouth with Polydent throughout this two-month process. This was annoying as I had to remove the tooth every time I ate and at night. I later learned that this is far from best practice. At this point, another major red flag I should have paid attention to.. He said the temporary glue did not hold because he had to file down my abutment (the implanted post that the crown is glued to) and that he might have shaved down too much... and that I might need a new one, but that he would "just have to see." He put the tooth in my mouth on the final visit and hesitated for 10-15 seconds. Finally, he handed me the mirror and asked what I thought. It was laughable how wrong the color was. I did not answer the question but instead redirected it to him. He confirmed the obvious - they did not match. At this point, I could not be without a front tooth for another two weeks to roll the dice on him, getting it right or wrong. I politely asked if maybe this tooth required more color matching skill than he was capable of. He quickly offered me a refund and sent me on my way. I appreciate the refund, but it seems like maybe he knew from the start that he could not match the color. Ultimately, if he had just admitted this earlier on, he could have saved us both the hassle. Unfortunately, I will not be able to recover/reuse the insurance-covered potion of this (they cover one crown every five years.) I called the local surgeon who did my implant surgery 15 years ago, and he recommended a cosmetic dentist in mid-town. I called the office, explained my story, and they squeezed me in the same day. His lab sends a tech with paint/stain and a setting oven on the day of placement to get the color just right (despite Dr.Eckel's repeated instance that there was no such thing as a "perfect match." Finally, I will need a new abutment, adding additional cost and time to this saga. This is a significant and unnecessary expense. Ultimately, this was no "slam dunk." Green Hills Smiles is fine if you need a quick cavity filled or a cleaning. However, anything of significance, I would highly recommend finding someone more capable. read more

The positive: I had no wait time for my 4:00 appointment and the hygienist was very friendly. The reasons I will never go back: 1. The dentist came in before the cleaning was done as I was the last patient and he wanted to leave for the day. I was a new patient and he spent maybe 3 minutes in the room. The only question he cared to ask of me was how I found his office. He then shook my hand and left. I felt like I was inconveniencing his time. 2. The hygienist did a poor job cleaning my teeth. The only tool used was the pointy one to scrape between my teeth. She expressed she wouldn't floss or clean around my permanent retainer because she didn't want to pop it off. I have always had this area cleaned before so was taken aback by this. There was also no attempt to remove buildup as I've had done with both my former dentists prior to moving here. 3. I looked at my phone when I got in my car and it was 4:34. My full x-ray scan, bitewing x-rays, 'consult,' and 'cleaning' took 32 minutes at best. When I left, I could still feel buildup on my teeth and after washing my hands I was able to scrape visible buildup off my teeth using my fingernail. Friendly and fast service means nothing if it's negligent. I have never been rushed in and out of a place so quickly. I am frustrated I have to wait 6 months before my insurance will pay for another cleaning. I had googled them and chose to go here based off their overall positive reviews. I was very disappointed and am looking for a new dentist. I would hope they will consider scheduling new patients at a time when they can meet their needs. I don't like speaking poorly of others but hope this can either prompt them to provide better care or prevent someone from having a similar experience. read more

I've received cleanings as well as other dental work, all wonderful. update: jacquie contacted me and let me know that there were issues with the insurance company that were resolved, and they are now able to continue to service it until december. cheers to that! everything below this is old news. However, after being told that my insurance would be supported for the rest of the year (2018) in February, I got a message today that it will no longer be accepted after June 20 (today is june 13). There are no available appointments before my coverage stops, and the office is closed for the final week of coverage! I can't change my dental coverage until next year. This notification should have been sent out months ago, and they shouldn't have said that coverage would extend to the end of the year at any point if this option was on the table. I've given three stars, because the actual service is great. Poor communication and poor execution of policies loses two sta i will alter my review if there was communication that I missed. read more

Shocked today by receiving a bill for services dating back to 2017. Why was I just now notified of this. Very suspicious. I have been in the office every 6 months always paid the balance due the day of service. If it was a special procedure I requested the amount I would owe out of pocket and paid it in full that day. I just recently moved to Nashville and needed to find a dentist. Dr. Eckel and his staff were great. I had a 1:00pm appointment and I was in within a few minutes. Sarah was very personable, and Dr. Eckel was very welcoming, friendly, and even had a few jokes. The receptionist at the front was also very friendly and helpful with my insurance questions. The dentist here is absolutely insane and should not be allowed to practice. I use my visit here as horror story that I pull out at parties to make people gasp and cringe, but honestly this happened 2 years ago in November and I still haven't been back to a dentist because I'm so scarred. I came into Dr. Eckel for a cleaning because he "accepted" my insurance, wasn't a chain, and had pretty good reviews on here (I say accepted in quotations because he said he accepted it, but it turns out he didn't offer anything that my HMO covered... lessons learned, I have a PPO now.) He did my new patient x-rays and showed me that my wisdom teeth absolutely needed to come out. 2 were impacted and 2 had come in fully, but were crowded and had gotten cavities in the side. I agreed to get them removed and set up the appointment. He then gave me a script for a light sedative a told me to take it before the procedure. I thought that was odd, but did as I was told. My father dropped me off for the procedure and my mom had plans to come pick me up. She had joked about videoing me when I came out of the procedure high... little did she know that wouldn't be an option as the good dentist apparently DOESN'T BELIEVE IN PUTTING YOU UNDER FOR TOOTH REMOVAL! Nope, just some novocaine and you'll be fine you sissy. So onto my procedure: He had me take the sedative (which did absolutely nothing for me and I don't even take pills so it's not like I have a tolerance problem. I don't even smoke weed), pumped me full of novacaine, and then decided it would be a grand time to test out his new 3D imaging system. By the time he was done, the novacaine had worn off and he pulled my first 2 teeth with tears literally streaming down my face. When he went to take the scalpel to the impacted teeth and I came out of my chair from the pain he seem shocked! Like seriously dude? Did you not see the tears and realize how much time had passed?! Any way, after having to sit fully alert and awake through the blood bath of having teeth sawed out of my head (and the sides of my mouth all cut up), I was sent home with some gauze, a script for some pain pills, literally no aftercare instructions, and told to come back when I get dry socket... you can't make this stuff up folks! If you're thinking about using him as a dentist, please go somewhere else. It's not worth the PTSD. read more

I had a great first visit. Other dentists I saw in nashville recommended filling cavities without even looking at X-rays (i was pregnant at the time). Dr Eckel takes a conservative approach. His hygienist was great and told me that other dentists she had worked for would see my decalcification between my teeth and immediately want to intervene. Dr Eckel is different. I saw him for all of about 30 seconds during my first visit, but I took that as a good sign! I should add I hadn't been to the dentist in almost three years (no insurance) so was terrified something big was going to be wrong. They didn't shame me for my lack of dental care. read more

I bought a living social to bridge the gap between insurances due to a new job. Their outsourced answering service was a little rude. I arrived to an empty office and waited at the desk for 15 minutes for someone to check me in. I guess that's because they outsource their receptionist. The dental hygienist took my x-rays and then the doctor came in. I will say he was exceptionally nice and as I saw posted before a very firm hand shake. He poked in my mouth for a second and was gone. Then the nightmare began.. The hygienist proceeded to tell me how I had a boring mouth with such little plaque. Then said "I'm going to concentrate on your front teeth and give you floss to take home to do the other ones yourself (never got the floss). " I've gone to the same place for 20 years and they have always cleaned all of my teeth. Then she polished them and said I had to hold the suction and use it myself. I've never had to do that either. The living social came with a custom whitening (what a crock of shit). They take a mold of your teeth and have retainers made and you put whitening in there and do it yourself. Oh and the living social only covers the top teeth. This is also not mentioned in the details or any fine print. She says it's an extra $50 to do the bottom ones, would you like to do that. Well duh, I like all my teeth to be the same color?!? She goes to fit me for the mold and shoved the mold in so hard she ripped both sides out my mouth. Then she screwed up the bottom twice so the dentist had to come in and do it for her. She said ok call back in a few days and see if they are ready. I called and ms. Useless from outsourced reception couldn't tell me if they were ready because she isn't in the same flipping building. I will never go back here. The only thing that was good was the dentist was nice and good looking. Other than that it was like the trip from hell. I wish I would have just paid out of pocket for my regular dentist. read more

i went here b/c it was one of the few places that took my HMO insurance. i spent the majority of the time w/ the hygienist who told me i had terrible gum disease and that i would need to schedule multiple deep cleaning sessions that would cost me over $1000 to complete. she didn't even bother to do any routine cleaning at this appointment b/c she wanted me to come back for the deep cleaning. at the end of the session, the dentist popped in for two seconds to see if i had any questions. i could definitely stand to floss more (ie not just when poppyseeds are stuck in my teeth), but i'm pretty diligent about brushing twice a day, and i have never had any issues w/ my gums in the past. so i decided to switch to the PPO insurance during open enrollment and get a second opinion before paying so much out of pocket. when i finally went to a different dentist a whole year later, i was told that my gums were fine and that i just had some plaque build up b/c i had gone so long between visits. if you look at some of the other reviews, other people have had a similar experience (being told they had 6 cavities despite never having issues in the past). a lot of the 5 star reviews also seem super shady (3 reviews in the same month from different people who don't have a photo or any other reviews). long story short: the people here are either completely incompetent (ie the hygienist measured my gingival pockets as 9mm when a different hygienist said there were 2mm) or they are being purposefully fraudulent. either way, no one should ever go here. read more

Now I have had terrible luck with dentists all my life since I was a kid had braces for six years people have messed up teeth but I went in today to Green Hills smiles for a cleaning/x-rays and everybody was so nice they were great I wasn't scared at all and overall experience was amazing and I can tell you now this dentist will be my forever dentist. this is the best dentist that I've been to and I've been to a lot highly recommend. read more

Do NOT go here if you value your time, don't have insurance and like professional dentists. My son had a chipped tooth fixed here last year and it chipped again. He made an appointment to go back in to have it fixed. First question when they put him in the chair - do you have insurance? When he said no, Dr. Eckel said that's too bad because we can charge a lot more if you did. Then he said I'll be back in 10 minutes. He came back in 25 and said, I have another appointment in 20 minutes so I don't have time now to take you, can you come back tomorrow? What???? My son took time off work and paid for an Uber to get there. On top of it they said it was going to cost $250 for the repair when it broke due to their shoddy work the first time. I called to ask Dr. Eckel about it and he told the receptionist, I should email him any questions I have. Instead I left my number and not surprisingly, he never called. When I told the receptionist my son was going to go somewhere else she actually sounded happy and said you're welcome to do that. What an awful place that takes advantage of a college student and what a jerk that dentist is! read more

Dr. Eckel is an excellent dentist. He does great work, is prompt, professional and makes you feel very comfortable. He takes his time to do it right and did an excellent job on my crowns. His staff is also very professional and friendly. Somehow, he makes it a pleasant experience even when he's drilling in your mouth. I didn't think that was possible. However, my husband and I both went (different days) and were told we each had 6 cavities. The girl checking out before me was told she had 4. This is entirely for the teeth whitening that I got done here since I have not had any other services done in this office. This experience alone was pretty bad. I have a feeling a cleaning would go better but I will just keep to what I saw. For my whitening, the dentist applied a red hydrogen peroxide treatment that does not require a light to make it work. I sat in the chair for 40 minutes for both top and bottom teeth. Note that there was no cleaning beforehand which I assumed was standard before a whitening treatment and also there was nothing placed on my gums for protection which I believe is also standard. Also, during the time between having the hydrogen peroxide applied to my teeth and the time of removal (about 40 minute time span), no one checked on me or was nearby in case of emergency. I did accidentally swallow some hydrogen peroxide and it burned the back of my throat. When I flagged the receptionist, she got the dentist who I guess was in the breakroom. He told me that swallowing some of the treatment wasn't a big deal so I guess that was it. Aside from the not so great experience, my teeth don't look the slightest bit whiter. read more

My journey to this office started with an emergent broken tooth on a Saturday. I am new to Nashville and found a couple dentist options that could get me in right away, but I liked Marsha at Dr. Eckel's office best so I went to his office. Marsha verified my insurance quickly and get me right in to see Dr. Eckel. He's awesome. Easy to talk to, explains things simply and makes you feel at ease. You also always know where you stand for procedure costs as they provide a care plan prior to doing any work. I had the consult for my broken tooth yesterday (which was broken down to the root) then returned today for an extraction and implant. Everyone was so kind to me throughout the whole procedure, and Dr. Eckel's assistant was by my side the whole time providing comforting words, bits of advice, and some hilarious stories keeping me in a good mood through the procedure. It's a great office and I highly recommend it! I'll be back...and not just because I have to for my implant :-) read more
