The appetizer we ordered was supposed to come with chili sauce but they were out. We were told to just use the hoison sauce at the table. Also, the shrimp had fallen off the sugar cane and honestly tasted like fried tofu and was not good. I ordered the beef vermicelli and the meat was overcooked and dry. My husband had the vermicelli with chicken and shredded pork. The chicken was good but there was hardly any pork. We were not impressed and expected more from an authentic restaurant. Food is great! Service is so poor or should I say very unfair. My husband and I is a regular customer and we noticed a lady server named Bin and a guy server who never greets nor smiles at us. We always have to call their attention to ask for water or other things. They don't even bother to ask us how was the food or whatever. We thought that's just the way they are (culturally). But I found out that they are so friendly and so accomodating with other customers especially with Western. I've never seen them especially Bin treated us the way they treated them. When she brought our food, she placed it down roughly without any explanation. She is of Southeast Asian descent, and we, being Asian ourselves, didn't think she would be racist towards us. Nope. This is just cheap fast food in a wok with zero flavour for polite, boring palettes. Veggie egg noodle dish was overly oily, bland and lacking any notable flavour profile. No garlic? No ginger? Seriously: WTF. I spent too much money on Door Dash for this highly disappointing meal and froze 3/4 of it for a time when I might actually be inspired to reconstitute it with a zesty curry sauce on the fly. Although the quality of the meat wasn't outstanding, I was surprised when I notice the noodles were kind of hidden by the big amounts of tripe, brisket and red meat. The broth could've used more concentrated flavours, it was a bit bland so the taste was very meaty. The waiter was cool, attentive, kind enough to recommend us one of the most popular beers. Hands down the best pho in Victoria and there quality and better yet quantity of beef and brisket is great!!! I have tried pretty well all Vietnamese pho places here in Victoria as I went on a big kick a while Back and I can tell you this place never lets me down!! Downtown definetly has better service and quantity of meats and stuff in the soup. Langford location is identical in flavours but I always find I get shorted on the tripe etc (My fav!) and the service is very hit and mis but!!! But!!! Food makes up for any lack in service! At the recommendation of a friend I stopped by here and had a great meal. The lemongrass chicken vermicelli bowl came with fresh veg and just right vermicelli along with a nice dose of shredded pork. The lemongrass chicken was grilled with a nice BBQ sauce of some type that was so good that it merits strong consideration for my "Top 10 meals for when I get out of prison" list. Being the Tyrannosaurus Rex of meat eaters (with longer arms) I even thought they were excessively generous with the chicken servings. Beyond that the pho was solid, the spring roll was ok and the service was good but not spectacular. I picked up some take-out for friends at work on my last Island visit (lucky them to have a visitor who could make the lunch run!) and found Green Leaf to be quite adequate. The pho itself had a decent broth and a medium serving of meats and was certainly in the acceptable price range for noodle soup (although a little higher than my favourite Mainland locations). However, I had to wait FOREVER to pick-up our order and by the time the food got back to the office it wasn't as hot as it could have been. The restaurant was smokin' busy and I'm sure this factored in to the delay, but Pho is usually so quick and efficient, I was a bit surprised by the wait time. A few tables looked pretty exasperated too. All in all, not a bad place to grab a bowl of soup, but perhaps best visited in the less busy afternoon than during the lunchtime rush. read more

When I got there they didn't seem to understand that I was "picking up" my order, i had to clarify twice, that I had already ordered. The food here is awesome. The service is terrible. Cranky, rude and inattentive servers. Eyeballs rolling, sighs. This is bad because I can't help but leave a tip (former server myself) but then I feel angry that I am leaving a tip not earned. But, my money will hopefully be going in part to the kitchen. I get the same thing every time; #2 Salad Roll with Peanut Sauce and the #45. It's enough food for three meals, so I take some home with me or just get take out. After a long day of touristing, we walked around Victoria, and came across this place, out of hunger than by choice. Having had some great Vietnamese food in Little Saigon in California, I had super low expectations for how good this was going to taste. I was pleasantly surprised about how good the food tasted. The pho, though more expensive than I would really ever pay, was on par with an average Westminster pho joints. The broth was flavorful, and the meat was of an even variety, which is a huge complaint of mine with the amount of tripe that usually gets dumped in my bowl burying the other delicious cuts of meat. Vermicelli with pork and shrimp was slightly soggy, and generous portions of meat, perhaps a bit too much, only because I like having an even portion of noodles to my meat. The most intriguing dish of the night was the fried whole tilapia, which I hoped was similar to a whole deep fried catfish I've had at Favori back at home. It was decent, but underseasoned, a bit too much oil lingering on the fish, and perhaps needed to be cooked a bit longer to crisp up the bones on the edges of the fish. read more

A friend who knows I love Vietnamese food invited me out for dinner one night, after he was wowed by Green Leaf Bistro. After hemming and hawing and muttering "diet" under my breath, I decided I deserved a treat, and off we went. They've done a great job with the look of the place. Large, open, nicely lit, and clean, with nice and unified decor (which, while I have affection for the more hole-in-the-wall ambiance of a lot of Vietnamese joints in the area, was still much appreciated), with some nice art and colour scheme, and lots of tables, well spaced. The service was prompt and efficient, with frequent tea and water refills which I always appreciate. The tea was standard and average, but good. I was excited to see they had Banh Tam (aka Banh Tam Bi) on the menu, one of my favourites - thick noodles with coconut milk sauce, carrots, bean sprouts, and BBQ/grilled pork with a chili-lime vinaigrette to pour over. The food arrived in reasonable time, and all our dishes came out close together (also appreciated - I find some places have one person eating way before the other). The Banh Tam was decent, and I enjoyed it, but it's got nothing on Saigon Night. First, the dish should be served in a bowl, not on a plate, because when you add the chili-lime sauce, it mixes with the coconut milk to mean the yummiest bits are at the bottom. I watched wistfully as my yummy remainders, totally unattainable from a plate, were taken away. The noodles and sauces were good, but the pork, while tender, lacked the nice outside crusty char that goes so well with the dish. My dining companions had some sort of pork chop, which was well received, and a bowl of pho, which was pronounced only adequate. I wasn't wowed too much, but I liked it enough that I will likely return to try something else in future. Favourite Vietnamese in the city still remains Pho Vuong and Pho Vy for pho, and Saigon Night for everything else, but this is still a solid choice. read more

I've had take out twice and dined in once. All were terrible. Everyone raves about this place. Being from Vancouver, my standards for pho are pretty high. Unfortunately I haven't found any place nearly as good and Green Leaf doesn't even come close. The first time I had pho from here was for take out. I was grocery shopping so I didn't have a menu in front of me but I asked for "brisket and steak pho noodle soup" thinking that was a pretty clear order. When I got there, my bill for 2 of those was about $30 so I was a bit annoyed at how much it cost. When I got home to eat it, I realized why it was so expensive. It was because they gave me some weird seafood meal with like octopus and stuff. Super gross. I'm sure some people like it but all I wanted was a beef noodle soup. So I forgave them and decided to give them one more try. Second time was also for take out and I actually got what I asked for. Still disappointed though. It wasn't anything special and not particularly good. Don't really know how to explain it but it was just MEH. The most recent time I went was in-house with a friend who had never been but also heard it was good. I know that pho is supposedly better in-house than take-out so I figured I would give this place one last try. The pho itself was bland. No amount of sauces helped. The service was awful. I told the server that I was waiting for my friend before I ordered so she poured me some tea while I waited which was nice. Within the 10 minutes that I was waiting for my friend, she asked me if I was ready to order and every.... single.... time.... I told her I will order with my friend when she gets there. When my friend arrived, we got chatting. We didn't even look at the menu because we were busy talking. The server cut us off mid-sentence to ask if we were ready to order. I told her we hadn't looked at the menu yet. She came back only a couple of minutes later and we repeated the same conversation. Some people might think that it's rude of the customer to waste the servers time, but, you see, I'm a server too, so I know that if people are chatting instead of looking at the menu, the server should just ask the customer to signal to the server when they are ready to order so that the server doesn't have to constantly annoy them. This server didn't do that. She just kept interrupting. So we decided to order so she would leave us alone. She didn't understand my order, which was just a number 25 or something, with extra vegetables. All items off the menu. Pretty simple. My friend and I were both confused as to why she was so confused lol. When our food came, we were talking again and, once again, the server interrupted mid-sentence to ask how the food is. We hadn't even tried it yet. No big deal but server etiquette should be to wait and see if the table is eating so you know they have tried it. The broth wasn't particularly good again. Super bland. The server kept reaching across my face to grab my cup instead of just asking for it. Of course I began just leaving the cup at the end of the table because I'm not a monster lol. This post probably sounds like I'm an awful customer which might be true idk. All in all, bland soup with terrible service. read more

I am a vegetarian, and tend to stick to the vegan side of vegetarian and was pleasantly surprised with this new Vietnamese restaurant in Victoria. Usually Vietnamese have only beef or chicken broth, and although one of the items on the vegetarian menu did have a meat broth (some people just don't get it!) it was clearly listed and was not hidden. I have been to many places that have outright lied to me and said that their broth was vegetarian and then found chicken chunks in it! Anyway, when we first visited Green Leaf we were greeted pleasantly and promptly, and we were made to feel very welcome and as if we were important guests. Granted, it was a slow night, but I have been back on nights when it was very full and busy, and we were greeted in the exact same manner as the first. When we explained our dietary restrictions to the server, she was very helpful and explained what our best choices were, what to avoid and how she could alter anything to make it suit our needs. When the food came (hot and sour soup with a tamarind base, veggie rice paper rolls, deep fried tofu and veggies with tofu - we found everything cooked perfectly, the vegetables very fresh and everything was delicious. The server was attentive without hovering, and the whole meal (and we were stuffed) was only $23. I would definitely recommend giving the Green Leaf Bistro a try. read more

Very authentic beef pho! I've tried many pho places in Victoria and not many are worth going back to (some places used chicken bone broth in their "beef pho"). Green leaf has excellent service and delicious bowl. I ordered the large brisket and meatballs soup and it came with tons of meat. Only complaint is that the large isn't even that big.
