We went on the green line about twice a day for 4 days. It is efficiently on time. If you need elevators or escalators vs stairs check for the wheelchair logo. The green line branches off into several fingers . We mostly used the Green Line E. Perhaps the train we rode closest to Newbury Street and Boston Public Garden was a newer model. By the inside close to the door there was an updated screen that displayed the upcoming stops. For some reason their subway is easier to use than New York or San Francisco. We felt more confident and safe. In Japan and South Korea we were at the mercy of helpful strangers if they even bothered to stop and assist. read more

I have the hots for the Green Line. From Lechmere to any of the far ends, I've been enjoying this combination street car and subway line. It's not perfect, more like A-OK. The trains run mostly often enough if you're in the north end of the system since the areas between Lechmere and Arlington are really four lines. Once you get past there, the Green Line splits into B, C, D and E. (The "A" branch was shut down years back.) The lines do not rejoin. Above ground, underground, it's helpful in that it goes from Cambridge through downtown Boston and runs way down to Newton, Brighton and Brookline. Many of the above ground stations do not have much to their name. Barely a station and more like a "stop." There is no cover at some and no ticketing machines. Some will let you know when the next train is coming, most will not. At all of the stations without turnstiles, you must board at the front of the train with the driver so that you can swipe your Charlie Card. read more

Zak and I caught the Red line to the Green line to shop on Newbury Street. It was Zak's first trip on the T and although he did great I don't think he will be graduating and able to ride the subway alone. The conduct was pleasant when we boarded and our trip was uneventful which is always a plus. Taking the T is the best way around Boston. Are you late and in a rush to get to your destination? Don't worry, the green line will get you there even later!! Slow and unreliable, old and rickety. If you are on the phone, the person on the other end may not be able to hear you because of the screeching of the green line. Not all the stations have sign boards that tell you how long the wait is for the next train. And even if there were sign boards, its not very reliable. This is what happens at times: You look at your watch. It s 5pm. The sign board says the next train will come in 10 min, so you think it will come at 5:10pm. Well at 5:05 pm, you check you watch again, the sign board still says the train will come in 10 min, so you hope it will come at 5:15pm. Well at 5:15pm, you look at your watch, and the sign board says the train will come in 9 min. So once again, you will be late!! During the weekends and late at night, the train will come every 20 min if you are lucky, but sometimes you will have to wait for 30 min. The green line is always super packed after baseball games too, so good luck. If you are a fast runner, you should take part in a race called "Beat the T" where you run along side the green line to see if you can outrun it because its that slow. read more

The green line is absolutely aggravating! How is it that there are 4 different green lines, with each having a different terminus? So confusing! One green doesn't connect with the other unless you go waay down, and make a transfer, to the same train, but different line. They don't accept bicycles on these trains either?! Gah! Grr. The trains are more like trolleys, with a smaller set of cars than a typical subway. Many of the cars of the green line go above ground on some of the lines. This is the only line I've seen where the different directions have different stations. Uggh! Why can't they just come up with different colors for the 4 green lines? A checker line? Polka dot line? The Green Line benefits from my years living in a city with no train system at all. In comparison to "nothing," this poorly run, oddly structured, somewhat confusing mess of train lines seems pretty ok to me. Plus, I've discovered the secret to sanity on the Green Line, which is this: Never ride it outbound past Kenmore, never plan on catching it inbound past Government Center, and never try to ride it between 5 and 6 pm on a weekday. For those times when you just can't avoid breaking my Green Line Rules, immediate ingestion of adult beverages upon arrival is recommended. read more

Oh Green Line... you are both a savior and a migraine for my daily commute into Boston! In comparison to the other lines, Red, Orange, Blue, the Green line is extremely small and slow with frequent abridged services. Don't get me started on the when they stop the train for standby! This public transport can barely handle the rush hour and Red Sox Game Day traffic so my commute can wildly range from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours! Since the line is mostly above ground it also is susceptible to traffic and inclement weather. (Delays and cancelations were imminent after each snowstorm this past winter.) Furthermore WHY must you also split into 4 other lines!? This causes such unnecessary congestion when you converge! At least they have finally added in the countdown clocks, which adds some level of predictability of the schedule for trains... I mostly ride the D line, which is supposedly the fastest because the stops are farther apart compared to the B, C, E lines. However, when it's Red Sox Game Day, I cannot beat the hordes of people flocking to Fenway! Just recently I realized I should have walked to the Park St. station instead of staying stranded and watching about 15+ trains packed to the brim pass by. Until I become rich enough to park in Boston, or permanently work in the 'burbs, I will unfortunately need to rely on the Green line to shuttle me from place to place. read more

I actually like the Green Line. Although the buses and the subway trains seem kind of older and in need of repair in some cases and isn't always the cleanest, it served most of the places I wanted to go to and I love how it always stops at Gov. Center but fans out throughout Boston from there. I think its really nice to be able to always ride one train in a direction no matter what "ID" is associated with the green train and be able to get to where your destination is because it is so consistent. I think that's what's really great about the Green Line. It's fairly consistent, while I was there seldomly were trains taken out of service and did not stop at their final destination. I was always able to get to where I needed to go. I just wish they ran past 12:45am! read more

Nothing good comes of a ride on the B line. Ever. I'm glad to see people using public transit,but the B is always overcrowded. It's slow. Three C lines and two E lines pass me by as I wait for one B to come along. And for me, it means two other lines before I even GET to the B to get where I'm going. Pros: -The first public transit -The cars are cool to look at -Scenic views of Brookline and Newton -You get to travel above ground (as opposed to riding in the bowels of the city) -Covers a thriving metropolitan area -You don't need Uber or have to deal with traffic -Once the 4 lines reach Boston proper, they converge and run along one track - quadrupling the frequency of trains inside the city Cons -It's an old-fashioned trolley system - that deals with pedestrians/cars when riding above ground -Above ground, there's no stations or turnstiles, so traveling becomes slow and tedious -Old, uncomfortable cars are poorly laid out -Newer cars tare still uncomfortable and just as poorly laid out as the old ones -Vulnerable to the weather (more so than the other lines) -There's a B, C, D and E line (why not A?) read more

I love transit systems. I have been riding the Green Line (off and on) since 1964. I love the relaxing ride from Riverside to Park Street. So, why only 4 stars? When we visit Boston we typically stay in one of the suburbs and ride the subway into downtown. Typically, that means a trip on the Green line. It is usually fast, comfortable, and I like how you can see the areas through the windows. Some of the cars are showing their age, but I don't mind because I am a train fan and enjoy seeing vintage equipment. The only downside is riding outbound from downtown and having to wait until your Green line train (Riverside, Heath, Boston College, etc.) arrives. It always seems like you just missed the one you needed! read more

I didnt stop at a lot of the green line stations when I was last in Boston. But I did hop on there for a short stint. I found it interesting that they had a different type of train. It looked like it was out of the 30s to the 50s. So its obviously an older line where the MBTA has updated the other lines, they have not yet updated the green line. I am not quite sure why. The other lines are definitely well maintained and kept up. Pro Tip: This line is not bicycle friendly. Someone had transferred with their bike from my train and was booted off of the green line! wow! So why wont they let bikes on the green line? I have no idea. The few stations that I stopped at were not as nice as the other orange line at all. They were also a lot dirtier. However if you want to go to the museum of science, this is the train to catch. It will drop you off about a 1/4 mile and one river crossing away. The cars were no more or less comfortable than the other lines. I did find it interesting that the front car has the conductor right next to the passengers in lieu of in a separate compartment or car. Overall though it seems like a regular light rail line as you can find anywhere other than the vintage cars. read more

I come from a place where public transportation moves faster than mules. So my first thought when I arrived in Boston was: "I think my train is broken. It's really slow. It stops every ten seconds." Whose brilliant idea was it to run a subway line above ground, right down the center of some of Boston's busiest streets, where it has to yield to regular stop lights? How is that, you know, different from a bus? Why is it called a subway, again? Sometimes I sneak on the train and see if I can get away with not paying. It's my personal revenge. Inside the train: - Always seats off peak, aligned as such that you're never driven to claustrophobia from being boxed in to a window seat. Yeah, I'm looking at you Green Line. - Have never seen a puddle of puke (knock wood). - Plenty of bike space! Still looking at you, Green. - Cell service from the Kendall tip of the Longfellow almost clear through South Station. Y'know, for uploading your Angry Birds scores. Along the track: - Every stop between and including Davis and South Station is worth a few hours exploring. - MBTA's best little-known shortcut: the 1 Bus. Central Sq to Back Bay in under 5 minutes. - Stations feel complete, safe, well-lit and properly staffed. - The most beautiful 25 seconds betwixt Kendall/MIT and Charles/MGH. Rain or shine, day or night. Best of the five rails. So reliable, I'd hire it to watch my kid. read more

Probably because they run Windows Vista." 4) Run-to-the-back Regina: "You! You there sir! Boarding in the rear of the cah! You! Do you have a pass? Come to the front! Can't hear me because you have an iPod on? Hold on, I'm going to hold this whole process up and come back there and get you..." 5) Ignorant Ingrid: "There was absolutely no attendant tapping passes at Coolidge Corner. No way, those people I saw were just orange-jacket wearing passengers. You need to pay again." 6) By-the-books Betsy: "I'm following the rules by allowing monthly pass holders to board in the rear, but no one would know because I'm the only one who saved the training guide from 2004 when we implemented this heinous system..." Really, how absurd. I don't think another organization exists with such a lack of standards. Is it really that hard to draft a memo detailing the procedures? I think this is the biggest reason there are above ground delays on any of these lines - no one knows what the hell the protocol is, so they just do whatever they feel like. Still, it gets me where I need to go, and more than 73% of the time is air conditioned. Three stars. read more

Getting from point A to point B has never been as difficult as it is on the D line. If you value punctuality then avoid this branch or budget at least 30 minutes: 20 minutes of waiting time and 10 minutes of unexplained stops. And even sometimes this is not enough. The train pattern at Park street seems to be 5 C lines, 4 B lines, 2 E lines then maybe a D line. This is incredibly frustrating and if by any chance you fancy a seat on this very illusive train well forget about it. By the time one rolls into the station, a mob has already gathered. Although I have to thank the t for saving me money on dating. Each day is an almost intimate experience with a stranger like no other. Once I received a 5 minute hug from a stranger behind me holding on for dear life. I don't understand why you can't have d line as often as other lines given the demand during morning rush hour. A lesson in how to make people hate your service despite being one of the cheaper major subway systems in the country. Things I hate: The ear-raping screeching noise that trains make coming into and going out of certain stations. My ears are basically always covered when I'm in the Boylston station. Haymarket too. I just assume my eardrums are going to be assaulted. Drivers looking you right in the eye and closing the door in your face. Having two trains sitting in the station with their doors closed for several minutes where no one can get on. One leaves and the other sits halfway down the track, still not letting anyone on. Next train doesn't come for 10-15 minutes. I didn't think it was possible to miss two trains in a row but somehow it happens. Getting double charged with the Charlie card. Yes, it happens, and it's complete crap that it does. I caught it happening about 10 times one month. That's $20 stolen by the T. Getting your weekly pass stuck in the machine. Guess what? There's no one there to help, so you're out the cost of the pass and still not inside the station. Thank you for riding the T! read more

I used to be a cheery person and optimistic about many things in life. People would come to me for helpful advice, and I would always say, "Come on; don't feel so down. There's a better tomorrow waiting just for you." Then I started riding the Green Line. Now I'm just bitter from the inside out. I usually have to transfer on the Green Line from Government Center to Arlington Station--three lousy stops. But it's gotten to the point when I'd rather just get out and walk than ride the Green Line for five minutes. In fact, I go into a furious inner rage whenever I'm late and realize that I HAVE to ride it. I come up those stairs from the Blue Line and abandon all hope, now that I'm ENTERING HELL. There are four separate lines on the Green Line, so usually trains come more often than other lines, but the number of cars is fewer and there are more people riding than other lines. 90% of the time, the cars are packed to the brim--and that's before they stop to pick up more people. And don't even talk to me about rush hour or any time the Red Sox are playing. Damnit! I just vomited in my mouth. Sometimes, I have wonderful, wonderful dreams about the Green Line launching into space and inhabiting another planet far, far away, just to start its own race of inconvenient, outdated train cars that we never have to hear from again. But those dreams usually happen while I'm in-between Park Street and Boylston stations and 35 crotches are in my face. You always know the Green Line is approaching because of its deafening wail of agony 'round the bend. My theory is that every Green Line train car goes on a murderous rampage every night from 2AM to 5AM and kills people who have really loud screams. The Green Line is getting better, but needs improvements. Biggest of all, the trains need to be better maintained as they are not cleaned very frequently on the outside like they should. The lighting in the trains need better maintaining too, lots of incorrect colors and poor lighting. The automated announcements are sometimes quite and hard to hear. Definitely not as well maintained like it was before, more cleaner yes, but other things are maintained much worse now. read more

I grew up riding the green line and didnt always used to be so terribly run. :( It honestly saddens me as I am a lifetime Boston area resident but it is a crumbling shell of its former life. Canadian Economist, Galbraith, wrote of Private Wealth and Public Decrepitude - This is apparent when you make use of public transportation in Boston. The people working in the T are usually friendly enough but its clear it is underfunded. When we dont fund things, THEY CRUMBLE. The walls havent been painted in years, most of the trains were leased/purchased in the 1980s/1990s, and Signalling problem delays are endemic. We need to demand better but part of that is understanding that when we refuse to put money into public utilities that they inevitably decline.. read more

Oh the green line ... Bane of my existence. I lived on the E branch for 4 years ( college ) and I always thought it kinda sucked, but at least there was the 39 bus and the orange line. One day it all changed. I decided to leave my cozy, safe student ghetto for a scary new life in Allston. I should have known better and opted to the far ends of the Red line, or perhaps the mysterious Blue line, but no ... I found myself fighting to get on and off trains filled with the most vile examples of humanity possible: BU girls with year-round Uggs + Tights, little yappy dogs (for those that live off campus), and giant sunglasses that dim the earth itself. Recently I heard one threaten to call a lawyer due to a mall drone accidentally not giving the girl back her parent's credit card. This call was preceeded with the girl on the phone with a friend, freaking out and crying, not knowing what to do. BU bros, busy checking out their BU girls while saying such things as "Dude, she was so drunk she didn't even notice me feelin her up bro" Both end up deciding to TALK REALLY LOUD AT EACH OTHER EVEN WHEN US POOR ALCOHOLICS HAVE HORRIBLE HANGOVERS AT 9AM. These two also morph at 8pm Thursday night into their drunken counterparts that have even less skill at inserting $1s into the fare box than normal. Not to mention you then need to deal with guessing who might get sick, who might burst into song, and who might randomly go flying into you. Not only do B line patrons get to enjoy this ... but then there's also the beloved migration of the RED SOX FAN. The Red Sox fan is typically 100% lost despite many instructions as to how to get to Fenway. The Red Sox fan demands to pile into a train before letting anyone off, blocks doorways and aisles, spends ten minutes in the doorway asking if the train is in fact headed to fenway and not Hell, and often these fans follow up their amazing performance on the train by getting off and walking across the street into high-speed traffic, sadly avoiding meeting the fate Darwin would prescribe them. I need to go back to drinking to help drown out the pains of the world, B Line included. I hope my review is a cautionary tale to avoid the allure of living near Spike's, Sunset, 8 delivery sushi restaurants, and other wonders ... the B line punishes those who dare live near it. read more

Why am I giving the green line a solid four stars? Because I don't take the flipping B line, and if I did, I don't think I would be writing a review, but rather plotting revenge on the jerk who designed that line. I bet that guy lives next to the guy that designed the 66 bus line. Jerks. I am a daily rider of the E line (REPRESENT!) and have a relatively decent experience regardless of what time it is, daily. Granted, there's the occassional creepy dude, but they don't screen at the door for the awesome factor and anyone can get in, as long as they've got their Charlie Card. My deduction of the one star is for not enough trains running later in the evening, or even all night, but granted, even if you take the train to Lechmere from Back Bay, a cab runs a mere $14 (usually with tip.) read more

There's a train directly behind us. ::commuters get off train and glance back.. yes.. there are 2 trains.. but netiher is moving:: ...10 minutes later... Train conductor: Everyone can get back on the train. We're sorry for any inconvenience, there's a disabled train up ahead so we don't know how far we can take you. Just a warning there is some heavy traffic up ahead.. ...meanwhile.. it takes the same amount of time to get from Blandford to Kenmore as it usually does.. and from Kenmore to Hynes.. etc and so forth.. What the heck.. is this the Oregon Trail or something? Do people not have communication devices? Is this disabled train hearsay? How do they not know when the train will go out of service? C'mon man. It's too fecking cold for jokes. And yes.. I do live on the green line now. I apparently am more masochistic than I thought. read more

Dear MBTA, Congratulations on your failure to provide competent service! In light of your recent efforts and lack of results you have succeeded in winning my vote of no confidence. As a Northeastern University alumnus I grew accustomed to long waits for old, packed trains for the E line. I also understood that this was an inevitability given as the E line branches in a much different direction than the other three Green Line routes and also ran few trains. The stupendous showing of the C Line this Saturday set new standards. I'm not so nave as to believe a train should be waiting at Park Street station when I arrive, but I do expect one of each line to pass through and somewhat regular intervals. I waited for over 25 minutes with no C line train in sight, while 4 D line trains, 5 B line trains and 2 (TWO!) E line trains before the C line arrived. On the wrong track. If it was an isolated incident, I would forgive and forget. Yet the reliability given by the C line of late has been equal to promises made by my Brookline exes. So again, congratulations on this achievement. You are now the top ranked train line I hate to take. read more

The D Line, like the other branches of the MBTA's Green Line, is making the best of a bad situation. The outdated tunnels make nearly hairpin turns underground, making it impossible to run trains that are longer than 3 cars (and those 3 car trains are pushing the tunnels' limits). The unfortunate consequence is that the D Line cannot accommodate the morning rush (running trains more frequently would just lead to a bottleneck & further delays downtown). In the morning, commuters are packed tighter than sardines, even in those 3 car trains. During the afternoon rush, don't bother trying to board the D Line after Park Street. The train originates at Government Center and is known to fill to capacity at that first stop. Most trains still have room at Park Street (the 2nd outbound stop). Commuters at Boylston are out of luck until later in the evening. Non-rush hour trains have 2 cars, but on off hours, the D Line will sometimes run 1 car trains. Oftentimes, these single cars are also packed with travelers, even during the late night hours. 1 car trains are also run on the weekends, and can also get crowded (do you see a pattern here?). Occasionally the train will break down, and the conductor must shut down and restart the train at every stop. Also note that a lot of young families live along and use this line; on weekends the crowding is exacerbated by several strollers on board. If you're looking for an apartment or home near a transit line, avoid the D Line, especially if you work in downtown Boston and need to get to the office at a set time. For students, those who work at home, or anyone else with a flexible schedule, the D Line may suit your needs fairly well. Overall, the D Line gives me a sense of what it would be like to live in Roland Deschain's fictional universe, where the world has "moved on," and all technology is a decaying shadow of its former greatness. I hate to rate it so low because I understand that the poor quality is not a result of malicious bad management (we all know that funds, especially those for public transit, are tighter than ever), but the D Line is of truly poor quality. read more

What's with all the hating on the green line?! I like the fact that the subway is right outside my door and that it comes every 10 minutes (hey exaggerators, I can hear the trolley coming from my window, believe me, it comes every 10 minutes). I love the charm of the trolleys and getting to watch the scenery pass by on my ride into the city. Sure, it's not the fastest, and it certainly slows down even more when it's underground, but seriously, has anyone been to San Francisco? Sometimes it's not all about the speed. Take a bus if you want to get there faster, lord knows there's enough of them, but as someone who lived in London for a year, I rejoice in the fact that I can walk a block and hop on the same trolley, that I can get hand delivered right to my front door, and that the drunk college kids can stay on the trolley a little longer and not walk by my apartment at night. This is were you play time roulette. You could be there an hour or two early to where you need to be, but the Green line....oh that dastardly Green line will somehow STILL make you late. Time Warp?! Nope, it's just the Green line being the Green line. I can't count the times I've been late thanks to the Green line. Here's the skinny...They break a lot. You will be on "Stand by" a lot. Trains hardly keep the 15 mins intervals they are supposed to be on to get to a stop. I really suggest getting there early and having some sort of plan just in case any of the above happens. B Line= You really aren't in any sort of big hurry to get any place. It runs on street level and has tons of stops, so ya...this is the line you take when you wanna WASTE time. If you need the B line for school...sorry. C Line= This one is actually dependable but it comes so infrequently. It also runs street level, but then goes underground after St. Mary's stop. I'd say from Kenmore to Coolidge Corner it's 15 mins and 15 from Coolidge to the end of the line. However during the week during rush hour...this goes out the window. D Line= This one could be your saving grace if you need to be somewhere quickly. Keep in mind that they usually don't usually observe the 15 mins stop interval. You could be sitting there needing to get to work and the train won't come by sometimes 30 mins later...on a weekday! So make some time to wait, if you're lucky you won't have too. From Beaconsfield to Kenmore it's about 15 mins! Another 15 to park! However...the D line breaks a lot! But when you tempt fate...it's better to take this line as it doesn't do street level running. E Line= HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Whatever. read more
