I have been to the Green Onion on several occasions. It's a very nice bar and has great cocktails. However 8f you are looking to find any 50+ single women you are out of luck here. I'm gonna start by saying that I'm a sucker for a dark low bar, and i gotta say the Grunion ™, fits that model in spades. Opened in 1968, and probably last redecorated in the 70s, this no frills dive cocktail lounge is an omaha institution that's been around almost twice as long as I have. The service is what you expect from all good dive bars, and the prices are in the same boat. You can have a good night here for not a lot of coin. My only complaint as a midtown resident is its a little too far west for me to frequent. read more

I've been coming here for 20 years. In my 20s, I came because they served the strongest drinks in town, then my friends and I would hop on over to Nico for a night of dancing. Now, l look at the Onion as kind of an iconic bar in Omaha. Can I tell you what their "secret sauce" is for success? Eh. It was a great example of a clean place for a good strong drink. Gets loud, especially if the staff likes a song. Seems a good place for meeting friends, as we were doing that, and saw several other groups doing the same. Stay long enough, and it's less of a place for such socialization. Even while it's after-work drinks, there's attitude from some of the patrons. I guess it's "their" place and we're intruding. If that's not the vibe the management desires, someone needs to look into that. Lucky for me, I don't booze anymore, so I miss little not attending when not with a mob. read more

My wife and I were in Omaha for the college World Series and stumbled across this place and boy we are glad we did. The outside is nothing fancy and the inside has an old supper club lounge feeling with its sunken bar and darker interior. The bar tender was very friendly and the cocktails were fantastic. Meh, not really a place I see myself going back to. The decor is very dated...I felt myself waking back into the 90s. The bartenders were older and somewhat condescending to the younger group I was with. The crowd is definitely older as well. [Clarification: The heinous bartender described below was blonde, not brunette.] This experience was easily THE WORST I've had in the entire metro area (including the Oface Bar in Council Bluffs... at least they try) all down to one bartender with a crap attitude. Maybe she was mad that we interrupted her texting with our business. Who knows? It's not my job to anticipate her needs and fill them. I came in with a mentally challenged, but talented local artist who had the audacity to order a Dr. Pepper and referred to our blonde bartender quietly to me as "chubby and cute." I called him on it pretty quickly but gently b'c 1) he's pretty obviously mentally challenged 2) she heard it and 3) he didn't really insult her. Had he, I'd've tipped and left. She heard him, but so what? I've seen worse customer behavior in bars and I was once threatened at knifepoint by a street performer in New Orleans. Had she recovered like a professional she would have been looking at a 30% tip for such an " egregious offense." Moving on, I always ask what the specials are and if the house has any drinks of which they are particularly proud. Her responses were all terse and rude. "We have everything. Whatever you want." "Anything the bar does particularly well?" I asked. "No, just whatever you want. " This usually gives the establishment a chance to show me their best drink and prove they can provide the most basic level of service. No one fails this minor test. NO ONE, but the Green Onion did. And it got SO much worse after this. I ordered a Moscow Mule. "We dont have it." After all that stunning repartee about how they can make anything BUT the most popular drink in Omaha? Vodka, ginger ale and lime? Really? But my job isn't to tell you how make anything. Had I gotten one without the fancy little mug, I would've let it slide, but at this point, I honestly wanted to see just how much worse she was determined to make this. And she WAS determined. I have no doubt she wasn't simply bad at her job, but was acting with deliberate hostility. Also, I'm pretty sure she was showing off for the other bartender. I ordered a White Russian. It came in a highball glass instead of an Old Fashioned glass with a green straw. Ever try to mix a White Russian in a highball glass? Check the photo. I paid and tipped a buck. I always tip a dollar up front per drink and level up based on service when I leave. Then I ordered a martini which she slopped on the bar. I accidentally tore the end of a five, which she refused to accept. I'm not a gambling man, but I'd be willing to bet there was tape in the office, and having worked in customer service in a previous life, I would have accepted that five. "Would you like me to go to my car for some scotch tape, because I'd be happy to do that." And I was. Because again, I wanted to see just how bad this could get and we're still not done . I taped up my bill in this classy bar while she took her sweet time about mopping up that Martini she spilled in front of me. When she did she used a wet rag, which surprised me usually a dry rag is more absorbent. The bar was wetter after she wiped up the spill than beforehand. Funny thing is, I think she was genuinely surprised when I didn't tip maybe she thought she was amusing? The interior was nice though. read more

The strongest and best mixed drinks in Omaha. A friend of mine who is an officer for the Omaha Police Department confirmed for me that a single mixed drink from this fine establishment puts you over the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle (.08 BAC baby!). Watch out for "cougars", as this place is crawling with them, particularly on weekends. One lady at least 20 years my senior offerred to cook my friend and I breakfast. I come to Omaha from Las Vegas, just to hit the old venues and the A*shole owner said he didnt want my business because of the type of hat I had on. An all right place for a decent, but pricey drink. In all honesty, the Green Onion has lost its luster to me. When I was in my early 20s, this place was rumored to have the strongest pours in town, which I guess is a good thing because everyone drinks to get blasted, right? On a recent visit, the crowd ranged from 20-somethings to older guys in work attire. The sunken, wraparound bar is pretty cool. But my old fashioned, well, I could've made it better at home. And for $7+, it just didn't do it for me. I had no idea what kind whiskey they even used. Hopefully it was at least Beam. Very strong drinks. I say that first and foremost because you should know what you are in for. Plan accordingly. The atmosphere is great. Its casual and fun. There were all ages there. The crowd was clean cut 20-50 yo, bikers, "hipsters" (or so they were called) and average Joe's and Jane's (me). We went on a Saturday night and it was packed. No matter, we found a table immediately, and got comfy. Almost everyone was sitting - no dancing going on, but the Jukebox was playing (not a super awesome selection, but enough to keep the bar going), and they had tons of tv's showing the game of the night. Its a chatty bar, and great for big groups or for just one or two. There is a decent size round bar in the middle and wait service for the tables. Everyone who worked there was super friendly. If you are in Omaha, there is no reason not to go here for a drink. read more

One station had a motocross event going on, another a basketball game, with no one really watching anything. Happy hour on a Wednesday. Beware. It's "pickle" day. While we were assured it was happy hour, we got a card and could pull one tab back. It said Full Price. A Mich Ultra and a well Vodka set us back $12.00 before tip. Not much of a happy hour. Based on limited research, chances of paying full price are 3 out of 5. Anyway, regardless of the boozy drinks the bar itself is an oval shape that is built in the center of the bar. I love this. Old school cocktail lounge in an unassuming strip mall. Walk in to the lounge, walk out of the 21st century. I went on Pickle Night which means with every drink you order you get a scratch off card that determines whether you'll pay full price, half price, get $1 off or get a free drink. Pretty cool. The focus is on mixed drinks and if you want a beer, you'll get it in the can. An aluminum can, not in the men's room. Friendly staff. I'd love to go back on a busy night and watch the regulars drink away their paychecks. I suspect the people watching would be pretty good. I'll drop in again. I love places like this. read more

Green Onion is one of my favorite places to get a mixed drink. Why? They are as strong as a circus performer. I came in here one time and was wearing a tank top. I noticed the sign outside about proper attire and still went in. The bartender promptly handed me a XXL Greg Norman polo and I was allowed to stay. I'm in Omaha about once a month an try to visit the Onion each time. Can't explain why I keep going back -- it's probably the same reason I buy beef jerky on a road trip. It's not good for me but I need it. Staff is unusually friendly, mixed drinks unusually strong, and there's always a seat. It's a dive plain and simple. This bar is alright. It's outdated and drinks are expensive, and strong. If this bar wasn't so close to home I would have never gone here and I would never come back. This bar has a wide variety of customers, and that's why my friend and I like to come here, we like to people watch.
