However, we booked a half-day guided tour and were very disappointed. The website (being as dated as it is should have given us a clue) boasts different trips to choose from, but Jim doesn't have the staff to pull them off anymore. We weren't able to select which tour we wanted. Instead we left and returned from the public launch near his home at Spring Cove marina. Two-thirds of his kayaks were missing or had broken rudders. The kayaks were lacking a little love and care. Even a simple hose down to get grass clippings, bugs, and cob webs out of them would have helped. Several of the life jackets needed to be replaced as I'm sure those did not meet coast guard standards - not that you really need life jackets when kayaking in the shallow waters of Swan Creek. But, he had great paddles - light weight carbon fiber with shaped blades. The advertised "beach" stop near Humphreys point was a 10 ft by 2 ft patch of muddy land. There was no great way to get out and explore or enjoy the overgrown area, nor was there a good place to swim and enjoy the warm August water. And our email reminder that bottled water and high energy trail mix set some higher expectations than the one extra bottle of water that Jim had in his kayak. The "guided" portion of the tour was almost non-existent. Other than navigational directions, there was very little information shared with the group about where we were paddling, or what we were seeing. Some brief explanation of a duck blind, and three sentences of history regarding one of the farms we saw was about it - for those close enough to hear Jim. We would have had the same trip if we were given a laminated map and let loose on the kayaks. The scenery was beautiful. We weren't fortunate enough to see any of the bald eagles in the area, but we saw plenty of Osprey, Herons, ducks, and other birds. We had great weather, so we were able to enjoy the serenity of the area. Having done guided kayak, canoe, cycling, and hiking tours before, we had higher expectations. I wish Jim the best of luck in what is clearly a delayed retirement.

Bottom line up front: the school was difficult to work with, unresponsive at times, incredibly…read morerude, and the ASA 106 course was cancelled about halfway through due to boat problems. They get two stars versus one because at least they had the decency to provide a full refund. I will never do business with them again, which is a shame as I live nearby and I'm now flying to other schools to continue my sailing education. Details: Last year my wife and I signed up for an ASA 106 course which was a DelMarVa circumnavigation. My wife had to cancel her participation due to a cancer diagnosis (she is now in full remission). Rita, the office manager, treated this as a serious inconvenience to her, rather than a situation to be empathetic about. In email exchanges, she stated that I "pressured her" on the phone to provide a partial refund, when in fact I NEVER SPOKE TO HER on the phone, because she never answered. She also wasn't terribly responsive on email, but she did eventually respond to things, sometimes weeks after we sent a message. I pushed back on her characterization that I pressured her. She did apologize and write "My apologies on the characterization and use of the word pressured. I do tend to take things personally and this season has been overwhelming." But this is just one indication of how poorly Rita treated us throughout the whole process. Let's just say customer services is NOT this school's strong suit. Rita is the daughter of the owner, Tom Tursi. I mention this only because if I ran the school, I would not tolerate this, but I can see why Tom would. Perhaps Rita is overwhelmed and they need office help. Or perhaps Rita isn't cut out for this kind of work, but the customer service element of the school is about as bad as it can get. On to the cancellation of the course. While in the middle of a marina, the engine shaft on the boat disengaged. This created a potentially dangerous situation, which was mitigated by the quick action of the crew/students. We ended up tying up to another vessel with fenders out while waiting for repairs. The vessel was repaired, but we lost a day stuck in a marina. Once underway again, we made it out into the Delaware Bay, where the same issue occurred. We needed to be towed in to a harbor in Delaware. I kept asking the captain and other instructor "what is happening next? What is the plan?" They had no answers. This is simply poor leadership. I ended up leaving and deciding that I was done with the course regardless of what they wanted to do. My wife, who just had chemo, drove out to pick me and another student up in Delaware. The fact that I was willing to abandon a $3K course in the middle of it is telling of how I felt at the time. I understand that things breaking at inopportune times is part of sailing. However, if I were the owner of the school, I would have driven out to where the boat was, addressed the students in person, apologized, provided refunds on the spot, and offered appropriate ground transportation to the students. Not doing so is just poor leadership. Providing strong leadership and decisive action in key scenarios is an important part of being a captain. The fact that this was not done in this scenario makes me question the leadership of the school. The fact that the engine shaft failed twice in three days also makes me question how they maintain their vessels and their choice of vessels in the first place. Ultimately the refund was provided, but there was no apology or explanation. Overall, the experience was negative from start to finish, from booking, logistics, dealing with my wife's health issues, the course itself, the boat problems, the aftermath, all of it. I suppose the instructors were knowledgeable and nice enough, but that was overshadowed by all of the other problems. The only redeeming quality is that at least they were honorable enough to provide a full refund to everyone except my wife, who could participate due to her cancer diagnosis. I ended up completing my 106 with another school and I'm currently enrolled in ASA 108 with BOSS - the Barefoot Offshore Sailing School.

Even people who know the Chesapeake Eastern Shore don't know about this little place. After you've…read morecrossed the Sassafras River in Georgetown, and you're approaching Galena, turn right at Galena's only stoplight toward Chestertown, and a few miles down the road you turn right on Route 444. This road heads back toward the Sassafras, and after a couple of miles you'll find a small community on the left. This is a private community, made clear by all the signage, that was founded about 1940. My grandfather was one of the first people to own a house there. The first houses were simple one-story places gathered around an inlet from the river, with a long pier allowing small boats to dock and a small beach and bathing area. But in the last generation, the land values have soared as rich folk discover this hideaway and tear down (or build onto) the original houses. There are no businesses there, so if you don't have an official reason to visit, you're not really welcome. I travel there a couple times a year, just to remind myself of the place I spent all of my summers until I was a teen (my kid profile pics were taken there). The surrounding area is interesting to drive through - Kennedyville was like a ghost town, but Galena seems to be teeming with antique stores today. Chestertown isn't far, and is very charming. If you are traveling through and want to see a curious area, just cruise around, stop in at Vonnie's for lunch, and take it all in.
