Wide variety of books, having the whole set would be nice, but finding new series even when you can't start with book 1 isn't too bad at their prices. They're are books for just $0.99, and I think the most expensive one I saw was $5.99, with most hovering around $3.50. The cashiers ate friendly and quick. Definitely recommend this place. read more

I've followed this shop on social media for years but have never gotten a chance to come in. We were in the area today and decided to make a quick pit stop to check it out. Right away, the staff were very friendly and greeted us when we came in. They had a great selection from books, to school and art supplies to toys/games and even home decor. Their prices were astounding! They had special edition splayed edge books for $6.99! I couldn't believe it! The selection is going to depend on what they get in but they also have stuff on Facebook that's not on the site and you can email them if you're looking for something particular. Remember the Scholastic book fair from elementary school? That memory came roaring back when I entered the Green Valley Book Fair! : ) This is a reader's paradise with a huge selection of books for all ages and on all topics... mostly paperbacks with some hard covers. The accessories are cute and very giftable. This is a great activity whether or not the weather is optimal for the usual/planned resort activities. The prices are very affordable and the helpful staff uses a radio system to find information very quickly. I recommend and would return. read more

I was super impressed with the selection hear for kids activity books and kids selections. The prices were really affordable and cheap. I honestly yess hoping for more fantasy/ Romantasy selection but that came up a bit short for me. This is a definite must visit if your in the area because your guaranteed to drop some money on stuff you didn't know you needed! This was so fun. There were so many kids books and teaching materials and toys. And everything was at a discount. I got a huge wolf stuffed animal that would usually cost over $50 for $18 and it was just fun to explore. Also it was dog friendly so we were able to bring my friends very old and confused dog who got lots of love and attention. read more

I went 30 mins before closing and once I stepped inside, I immediately knew that 30 mins was not going to be enough time!! I was in book heaven!!! There are 3 floors of books, crafts, stationary, decorations and more!!! There's an open outside enclosure with seasonal items and more space that I did not get to explore! They have current hardcover books for less than $6!! There is a huge kid section. Other items have deep discounted prices. The employees were super friendly even though we were racing to the register right at closing. They made sure we picked up free bookmarks that were made by local school kids. I will be back and make sure I have at least 2 hours (I got 2 hardcover books, 2 softcover books, 4 journal books and a book of stickers for less than $25). This place!!! Every time I have out of town guests, I take them there to browse. They have everything from baby/children's books & misc for kids, non-fiction, fiction, religious, artsy craftsy items, school & office stuff, you name it, but always at a descent price. I can go in with my guests not intending to buy anything (because I recently shopped there) & still come across something not seen before. Fortunately for my guests who flew here from other parts of the country, at the back of the store, they will package & ship your purchases. I've brought my two small dogs here and since it's indoors and cool during the summer, they get a good walk in. However, I've found I prefer to leave them at home so both of my hands are available to shop. They also have some picnic tables outside to sit and relax for a break. I've learned to check ahead to make sure they're opened as they periodically close to restock. Although I've been there enough times, I still use my gps in case we get to talking in the car enroute and don't drive by any turns. I highly recommend this place and will say my guests often remark this was one of their favorite places to go. Have fun shopping and try not to be in a hurry so you can take it all in. PC read more

This is the place to get reprints of classics for adults and kids alike, but the rest of the stuff was a mish mash of publisher's overstock. Such a great place, and less than an hour from Cville. Who doesn't love cheap books? The Green Valley Book Fair is a large warehouse full of a large selection of books from all genres and for all ages, and they also stock some activities and games for children through to adults. Make sure you check their website or social media pages to see when they'll be open because they usually open for a few weeks and then they're closed for a month or so until their next restock and opening. My main interest in the book fair was originally to purchase books for my son, who was around a year old when I first visited the Book Fair, and he needed a library update for Christmas. I spent all my time in the kids book section and there were so many books and aisles to go through to try to see everything and make the best selections that, with a toddler in tow by myself, I didn't check out the adult sections at all. I wanted to return to see what kind of selection they had for adult books, and so this past weekend my husband and I did just that. I was happily surprised! Lots of selection, from classics to new releases. I'm not sure where Green Valley Book Fair gets their selection from and how, but I want to ask next time I'm there, because I'm curious! I'll definitely keep returning, because books are the best gifts especially as we continue to grow our son's library. read more

Found an amazing selection of books for my niece as well as myself. I did have to take a Benadryl because of the cat and dogs inside, but luckily the place is large enough I could steer fairly clear of the animals. Unfortunately I'm very allergic to dogs and cats but with the book fair being so large it wasn't too bad, all the great books and friendly employees made up for my itchy eyes and sneezing. read more

I have been going for years. They specialize in new books at a discount. The prices cannot be beat and is best for a person that loves several different genres. They also carry a lot of odds and ends. These include jigsaw puzzles, arts and crafts, school supplies and much more. Took a ride to see what the hype was about. We had a great time looking thru the rolls and rolls of books from all categories. Didn't have the latest but a huge selection by far. Excellent prices kept us dropping more and more books in our basket. The staff were friendly and helpful. Plenty to do outside of just shopping made us spend more time there then expected but a great time was had by all. Not at all what I expected. That's on me. Insufficient research. What you get is a cavernous building with appear to my eye to be print overruns of recent and current books at quite good prices. If you are interested in church and other religion related stuff you'll be in heaven (ha!). If you have specific interests prepared to not be impressed. The choice of culinary material was dominated by making beer and baking cakes. Boating was limited to two books buried under "Adventure." Gardening was dominated by all the stuff that didn't sell anywhere else. Lather rinse and repeat for your interests. The bathrooms are clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. They only have what they have. That is not quite worth getting off I-81. read more

There's a lot to be said about -any- place that I'd drive 2 hours to...in Virginia! (And by "drive", I mean ride along in the car.) The drive is long (and you may fall asleep in the car, both ways...) but for the time when I was awake - the view along the highway was pretty. Though scenic in some places (like Shenandoah), I have this thing about going to Virginia...I try to avoid it at all costs. Sure, I live in the 'burbs now...but Maryland [insert greater than symbol] Virginia. (Oh yes, I said it.) Well, as painful as it is to admit, the 2 hour drive to Mount Crawford/Harrisonburg was well worth it to get to the Green Valley Book Fair. We pulled up around 1145am and found it to be fairly crowded. There are very large parking lots so it wasn't a problem finding a spot. The books are housed in two large buildings that are basically old barns. The buildings are very clean, have heat and a/c and more importantly, have benches all around so you can sit down and take a break from browsing. (Important for the elderly folk, like me and my stupid back...) The first section I went to was the travel book section and I was shocked when I saw Frommer's travel guides for $4. FOUR DOLLARS! Wow...is this real? As I continued looking around, I realized that yes, this is real! I picked up some moleskine journals for $4 also! In the upstairs area, there were also more fiction books, anime, the classics, books on finance, calendars and several titles in Spanish. I wandered downstairs in search of their photography section. It was a bit weak as their selections were scant. But they made up for it in other sections. World history, cars, sports, self-help, cars, medicine, cooking -- you get the idea. One of my favorite picks of the day was a 99cent copy of "New equations for life"...hilarious! This is definitely the best place to pick up books that you've been wanting to buy for awhile but were deterred by the $29.95 price tag. The most expensive book I encountered was a giant book of architecture for $10. The "How to...for Dummies" books were also in the $5-6 range. It's just the mecca for cheap books. Looks like a lot of James Madison students hit this place up for textbooks; I wish I had known about this place when I was in college! I'm sure I could have saved tons of $$. The fair opens 6 times a year for 2 week periods. Check their website for the dates and plan accordingly. There's also an outdoor market area and public auctions in the neighboring buildings to check out. Who knew that such a cool place would be in VIRGINIA of all places. :-p read more

Okay--if you are a book lover, listen up, because you will want to hear this (or read it, whatever). The Green Valley Book Fair opens for 2-week periods 6 times a year in two old barns back a country road in the middle of farm country (a short diversion off I-81 between Harrisonburg and Staunton). The two barns are filled to the hilt with books related to every topic, there is an art section, a cookbook section, a large children's section, bestsellers, EVERYTHING. The only thing that is lacking is their selection of audiobooks. Here comes the best part (drumroll, please)-----all of the books are NEW and 60 to 90% off retail!!!! It is best to get there the first day they open to have access to the best selection--it goes very fast as there are a very large number of bibliophiles present. It is quite a spectacle and if you can't deal with crowds, it may be best to stay home. But, if you love books, it is a fun experience. Be sure to clean out your trunk so you have room. They do supply boxes and, believe me, you'll need at least one. Some people bring wagons. Yeah, that's right, wagons. read more

I really enjoy coming in and rummaging through all the books. Don't come in looking for a specific title. I can say that my favorite author is hit or miss but when I do find one of her many books it's always an amazing deal. Generally I walk out with at least five books and spend on average 20-25 depending on wether it's hard cover or not. There is something for everyone here. Kids to adults, crafters to cooks, fiction lovers to biographies. So if you love books this is the place for you!! read more

While in the middle of nowhere, this is a great spot. Filled with thousands of brand new books at unbelievable prices ( I don't think I saw anything over $8). And, they accept credit/debit cards! My only complaint is that they don't have many newer or very popular books. I don't recommend going with a list of books (you probably won't find what you want), but I do recommend visiting this place with an open mind. They do have an enormous selection of books of all genres (to include things like cook books!), and you'll probably find something that peaks your interest for a good price. You could literally spend hours here and get lost in the amount of books offered. again, brand new books and very good prices, often cheaper than used books at a thrift store. aside from books, there are also games and cards and gift things. they also sell some cloths too! If you walk through the bridge, depending on the season you can get stocking stuffers and gifts. and on the other side is childrens things. yea, it's very easy to spend several hours here and wondered what happened to time. will definitely come back here again when in town. read more

I love going to the Green Valley Book Fair! The prices can't be beat. My wife and I went just last weekend and got about 15 books for around $60. There are two buildings. One has sections for children, cooking, lawn and garden, and home improvement. The second building has fiction, business, history, travel, and about every other category you can think of. During our visit I noticed they had a paranormal romance section, which I thought was a bit weird. Don't expect to find many new releases or best sellers. Instead, wander shelf to shelf and see what catches your eye. With prices so low, taking a chance on a new or unfamiliar author is not much of a gamble! And give yourself enough time to look around. We always spend an hour or more on our visits. read more

I first started attending the book fair over 20 years ago, and recently went back after probably 10 years. It's the same as ever- sprawling, super cheap and well-organized. They always have a good selection of books, especially classics, fiction, cooking, history and kids books. There are also areas for reference, science fiction, parenting, pets, science (including dirt cheap field guides), outdoor activities (hiking, biking, camping guides though the selection skews toward faraway places like Washington state). There are also sections for LGBT, and now manga and graphic novels. If you show up in the morning on the first day of any of the 3-week sessions scheduled, you'll get the best selection. Many times, I've come then and got the only copy or only one of 2 copies of coveted cookbooks or other tomes. They offer tax-free programs for libraries and schools, so if you administer a library, you can really get in and find some deals for your students. read more

As long as you're not looking for anything that goes out of date (i.e. travel guides) or don't mind getting older editions of such things, this place is a book lover's paradise. Certainly there are closer used book stores to Washington D.C. and those carry a wider variety of titles. But they do not come close to matching the prices of mass market books here. If you're looking for a random book from the 1970s on sociology, they absolutely will not carry it. But if you're looking for the Dan Brown novel you missed six years ago, it will probably be here for a price that is more suspensefully shocking than the book itself. Personally, I picked up a couple of random books here but nothing that I had gone in thinking I would be looking for. I was particularly looking for any of Jim Cramer's books and was shocked that, besides an overpriced book on CD, they had nothing by the investment guy which shocked me. Not that I would have had trouble finding it since everything is really well labelled and, unlike some used book stores (especially of this size), the titles were very well organized by author. While I'm not about to plan a trip to the Shenandoah Valley around the selected dates they are open throughout the year, I found it a fun way to spend an afternoon indoors buying book titles I never remembered needing. read more

If you have ever been to the Scholastic Warehouse Sale, in Danbury, CT, it has similar values, but in a bookstore layout and with a larger section for adults. I left with 4 new novels, 2 adult coloring books, a huge book of madlibs, & a box of colored pencils for under $30. The BBQ at the food truck is yummy & fair priced as well. This fair's located near the small town of Mount Crawford, which while pleasant, is truly in the middle of the countryside. The sale takes place periodically six times a year from March through mid-December in what were apparently once a series of barns. I think I've been to 9 or 10 sales now over the past 8 years. If I don't get in at least one good annual visit, I get fairly crabby. Of course, it's located in the great state of Virginia, which is better than benighted Maryland in every conceivable way. Remember Edgar Allan Poe, who generally lived well in Virginia but who died miserably after a short trip to Maryland. There's a good reason for that. Sorry, but I just had to get back at an earlier reviewer's needlessly snarky, disparaging comments about my adopted state. It's true that you won't find many recent best sellers at the GVBF, but there's a great depth of types of books available. I've found literally just about every kind of book here, and from every kind of press from big publishers like Random House all the way down to obscure academic presses. If you like history or literature, there are amazingly comprehensive sections for each. There's also a good natural science/nature guide section and a wonderful children's book annex (as it takes over an entire building, more or less). I've gotten far too many books from my trips to describe in detail, but, off the top of my head, I'd picked up volumes about the 4th century C.E. Roman military (an Osprey title), a survey of ancient Egyptian religion, a huge, well-illustrated volume about 17th and 18th century pirates, a very thick collected short fiction omnibus of Roald Dahl stories, a survey of 1920s Weimar Republic films, several excellent Virginia nature guides, some stray volumes of the collected papers of the Confederate States military (since the Civil War section here is sizeable), some translations of Latin American crime and suspense authors' stories, a few volumes of Sheridan Le Fanu as well as Wilkie Collins, Jack Finney's INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, a planet Mars observer's guide, two Library of America volumes of best news reporters' stories from the civil rights era, a survey of 1920s jazz, some home repair guides for plumbing and carpentry, several cook books, and many dinosaur and sea life kids' books for my son. The fact is, as is obvious from my disjointed, odd list, that they have a bewildering variety of books and genres, and the book fair is large--very, very large. It takes some endurance to make it from one side of the place to the other, especially when big crowds are there. After the long winter hiatus, the first spring sale can be very popular as well as the pre-Christmas sale, which is the last of the year. This place is likely a bit of a drive for the average shopper to attend, so it takes some preparation to visit. So be aware of that, and be ready to grab your shopping basket and politely push your way through. Things do calm down after opening day, but the most desirable items may get picked over after the first few days. You can always relax by having lunch or dinner at the nearby college town of Harrisonburg on the way home. Generally, after an hour or two, I can fill up a very large bag and maybe a smaller second for $60 or $70 tops. So, yes, I would definitely recommend the Green Valley Book Fair, but keep an open mind when you attend and be prepared to wander around and see what's in stock. read more

Randomly came across this place on the web and was going to be driving down I-81 from MD to TN when it was open in July, so I stopped in to see what it was about. WOW...a book lover's dream. Thank God I didn't have my mom with me (a school librarian), or we would have spent the whole day there. While someone else said you can't go in with a list of books/authors you are looking for, I wish I had and just realized that I might only find a few of them there and would likely come across some others in the hunt I would end up taking home as well (a number of genres were arranged by author). Even if I only found a couple on my list, I think a list would have given me a plan of attack, so I would not have felt so overwhelmed about where to begin. I went during the final weekend of the sale, so I can't imagine what it is like the first weekend since the selection still seemed great. Since I didn't know where to begin for myself, I actually spent a lot of time in the children's books buying gifts for my nieces and nephew. They have a section for Newbery and Caldecott award winners/classics, as well as great board books...I picked up some beautiful Eric Carle and others. read more

If you want the latest bestsellers, go to a big chain bookseller. If you want amazing deals on many thousands of books and discover something unexpected on every shelf, then you really should seek this out. There's a reason why the Green Valley Book Fair has become a tourist attraction. Imagine a bargain section from a big box book chain and multiply it by a thousand and you'll come close to the wonder that this place is. So many books!!! I agree with the previous comment that you should go here with an open mind rather than a list of books you want! I used to love book fairs and book orders as a kid so this place did not disappoint! They have all genres of books, all different prices and even supplies for classrooms. I'm so glad I stopped here!
