Bon Air Basketball has to be the worse recreational basketball organization in the Richmond area…read more My daughter is 9 years old and plays on a 11/12 year old team. Bon Air has teams separated by age groups Mite(9-10) Minor (11-12) and Intermediate (13-14) but Intermediate is where things get tricky. Apparently when it comes to Intermediate teams they split into to levels (advanced Intermediate and regular intermediate). Well after my daughter first minor game, the coach from the opposing team emailed Bon Air about how bad we beat them... so Bon Air moves our minor girls up to the "regular intermediate", which I don't see how they could decide to move them after playing only one game... OH BUT IT GETS BETTER. So throughout the season my daughters team won every regular intermediate games, but the had to experience some pretty unfair chain of events. During one game, during halftime, the ref went to the opposing team and was basically coaching them! He had the girls in a huddle! The REF! I thought...fine. But if you're going to do that with them... I'll wait until you come over to us... but he never did. So now it's play off time... and because my daughters team won all their games guess what luxury they get... To play in the playoffs against the teams they've played and beaten all season, right?! NOOOO! They get to get bumped up yet again to play against the ADVANCED 13-14 group. OH IT GETS EVEN BETTER! The matchmaker who puts the brackets together just happen to be coaches from opposing team! So let me get this... we're teaching these girl hard work really doesn't payoff, cheating and being mediocre at best does.

The kids have a lot of fun and enjoy their time playing. We always have a seat but the bleachers are minimal compared to a high school gym. The bathrooms are reasonably maintained but could be nicer. I'm not sure who works at the gym and who works with the youth basketball league, so I can't comment on the staff or service other than we haven't had any problems with this location all season. There are a few vending machines that could use a few more healthy and natural options. We haven't been in the locker rooms, but they are on-site. I do wish they would open both doors, and not just one side, so people can go in and out at the same time. It's nice that the gym can be split so four teams can play and practice half-court or full-court at the same time. It's also nice that the rim height is adjustable. IMHO, it's a nice location for youth basketball!

I believe Big Bens Gym is run by one of Ben's older brothers David. The facility is very clean and holds AAU tournaments throughout the summer as well as hosts the VAIL Sports basketball league all year long. Only complaints I have are that the referees that the facility hires for the games are terrible most days and the gym can get pretty hot on those scorching summer days but for the most part the temperature is pretty average. There are concession stands most days and David will fry fish so if you're hungry I recommend getting the fried fish sandwich combo because that thing slaps!
