The hotel is located on the Zocalo of Bacalar, just a few blocks from the lake and with plenty of dining options nearby. Our room was nicely decorated with a comfortable queen sized bed, air conditioning, and a kitchen area with dishware, coffee maker (but no coffee), a stove and refrigerator. Bottled water is also provided. Our private bathroom was clean and had good hot water in the shower. Veronica, the owner was very friendly and helpful during our stay. We were there in the high season of December and it was a relative bargain compared to other hotels that are right on the lagoon - we paid about $60 US/night. There are less expensive rooms but they do not have air conditioning and you have to share a bathroom. Laguna Bacalar is a beautiful place and I look forward to returning

I would not recommend this place if you are looking at be treated like more than a commodity…read more Upselling is rampant. - From the time you check in, they will try and upsell you to a different room - You can't walk the main hallway without being accosted by several different people trying to get you to go to a different hotel to talk about the vacation club in exchange for a resort credit - You can't walk down the main hallway without the spa concierge shouting at you to sign up. - When relaxing in the hot tub or pools, you are not safe from the resort picture people who will interrupt even the most romantic of moments trying to get you to sign up for a photo shoot. (We did end up signing up for one eventually and do have to say we had a good time doing it). - Buy a bottle of wine, be prepared to battle the waiter who is going to make it his mission to get you to buy a different one that costs twice as much. The rooms are dated and not that nice. We stayed in the preferred club honeymoon suite, and after two nights moved to the preferred club master suite due to an ant and fruit fly infestation in our original room. Even though the preferred club master suite is the second best room you can get at the resort, the outside couch on the deck was ripped, the outside light fixtures were missing covers, and the couch in the room was very used and just appeared to be very gross. Customer Service was lacking. No apologies for the bugs. When I ended up in tears because we felt like no one cared about what we were saying, my husband and I were told we were being given massages. But when we got to the spa, it was only a massage for one - the other would have to be bought. Upselling the sneaky way! The beach isn't big and really isn't suited to much water play. We were also there during seaweed season, which is not an all the time thing, but it made the beach pretty nasty and when taking walks on the beach off resort, it was very smelly at times. The food was okay. Some better than others but not too much was spectacular (although the corn soup at the Oceanside restaurant was amazing). If you are excited at the idea of eating a lot of shellfish, be prepared to be disappointed. My husband has been craving it and was looking forward to lobster, crab, large shrimps, prawns. He did eat some shrimp although it was pretty small and shell fish really wasn't a big thing. Thankfully, we did find some of that for him away from the resort. Overall, this is not a place I would recommend. We spent a lot of money for what felt like a mediocre experience, mostly because of the lack of caring on the part of management. Things could have been different had someone acted like they cared.

The travel from the airport was about roughly 3 hours, but its all worth it! There is always something to do in this place. Swim, enjoy cold drinks, watch the nightly live band, meet people, or overall just enjoy some peace and alone time by the beach.
