Very pushy and dishonest, in sales, financing and service.
My experiences over the years with Greentree have been nothing short of abysmal. I was in the market to buy a new car in 2011 and I thought this local Toyota dealership would be worth a shot. After test driving a vehicle and having what seemed like a positive conversation with Rich, a sales representative. I was transferred to finance and this is when things got ugly.
Being relatively new to the car buying experience, I should have been a bit more offensive. The finance representative was extremely rude and pushy. He coerced me into getting an extended warranty and I was tricked into a Lojack deal that was not as advertised. To clarify, he asked if I wanted to add the Lojack coverage for $30 per month and I declined. Then, completely out of thin air, he said, we'll make it work for $9 per month. I caved, it seemed like a great deal. After signing and processing tons of pages of paperwork, I left the dealer and began to review what had happened.
The cost of the Lojack came out to approximately $22 per month (maybe he tried to swindle me into a '$9 less per month' deal, instead of $9 per month? I still don't know, to this day). I immediately went back to voice my concerns and he was thoroughly hostile toward me. After a long time of arguing, he finally refunded the extended warranty, but flat-out refused to refund the Lojack. I got every excuse in the book, from "I already faxed the paperwork," to "you have to contact them yourself," to "too bad" He wasn't apologetic or polite at all, he acted as if I was a criminal, when they were the ones stealing money from me! I spent many hours on the phone with Lojack, who said the dealer could easily refund the money. Despite attempting for weeks to cancel the deal, the dealer refused to take it back. To this day, Lojack was never registered on the car and I was jipped in the process.
Enough with sales/finance, let's get into the pathetic service department. I don't like talking in that tone, but there's no other way to describe Greentree's parts and service. Starting with oil changes, if you are first in line and lucky, maybe you will get out of there in 90 minutes. The average wait time is close to two hours for an oil change. It's ridiculous.
Probably the worst aspect of the service department is how dishonest and cunning they are. They have flat out lied to me on numerous occasions. We're not talking about once or twice, but nearly every single time I went in for an oil change. Want specifics? It started with tires. At 35,000 miles, they told me I needed new tires, immediately. I knew that this was untrue. I kept coming back and they didn't mention tires again. Coincidental? I think not. I asked about the tires at 50,000 and they said they would be fine until 60,000. In the end, I got new tires from BJs instead and saved about $500 and I didn't even have to get them until 77,000 miles.
I had a check engine light a short time later and I called to see what Greentree could do. They said to come in and they would look at it, free of charge, since the car was under limited warranty. I came in on a Saturday and they said they don't do check engine diagnosis on weekends. I was also told it would cost something like $160, just to give me a code readout. No way! I got it for free at AutoZone and went elsewhere for repairs.
Another bad experience was the weekend after July 4th. Note that July 4th, 2013 was on a Thursday. Service was open on Friday, but since I had to work, I had to wait until Saturday. I was one of the first in line that morning, but guess what, they never opened. The website didn't say anything about being closed. Why would you open up the day after July 4th, but close on the 6th? In that instance, they only had a tiny hand written note on the door that they were closed. Myself and easily a dozen other customers waited in line for over a half hour before one of us finally discovered that they were closed.
I kept coming back for free lifetime oil changes, but I wish I didn't have to. They kept "finding" other problems with the car, all of which were complete fabrications. I always refused service and got second opinions. Not once did they present a legitimate issue that needed repair based on other opinions. They also pulled the "you need new tires, right now" ploy, prematurely, with the 2nd set of tires. The funniest thing is that on back to back visits, they gave drastically different diagnoses. The car (2010 Toyota Camry) itself has been very reliable. It's just a shame that Greentree isn't more of an honest business.
Now that the car is paid off in 2015, I am very thankful that I will never have to deal with Greentree again. Or at least I hope not... Every few months I continue to get random e-mails and phone calls from them, suggesting that I trade in my car toward a new one. No thank you! At least I live in a different state now, so I can stay as far away from them as possible. read more
