I love the Greer and that we have an option for this type of venue in the area. The space was recently renovated and has a neat art deco look/feel to it. There is a variety of programming offered from cabaret style solo performances to smaller scale musicals. There are seating options in booths, tables and a raised platform in the back. you can really see/hear well from anywhere in the venue, but the side booths you might lose some perspective. i don't particularly like the new QR code ordering because it can make it hard to actually ask questions about anything (and the servers are so busy it is hard to catch them to ask).. there are a variety of food and drink choices (apps and entrees) and they are on the more pricey side, but that is to be expected at this type of venue. The EASY Checkin and the CLOSE SEAT PROXY was just enough!!! I loved the staff and the QR code menu. The Ambiance was just perfect with seating immediately in front of the stage, (literally at arms length), and the tables behind there where the cast comes through!! It was somewhat interactive. It's been awhile since I've been to the Cabaret Theater. It's been remodeled since and it is beautiful. The bar area and lounge is gorgeous. Inside, there is not a bad seat in the house. I won't be going back to any performances at Greer Cabaret Theatre until there are major changes in leadership. I saw Hedwig at Greer Cabaret Theatre on Sunday, was excited for a Queer focused play. They changed the script to include Pittsburgh references but decided to leave in the line "and the colored girls sing..." in reference to Lou Reed's song Walk on the Wild Side. There were millions of other lines they could have chosen to reference Rock N Roll culture. Why choose this line? Why have white actors say that line? Regardless of who Lou Reed was referencing in the song, describing people as "colored" has a very specific meaning in the context of the United States history. Furthermore, he has omitted the word "colored" from the song and has other questionable songs in regards to race. This isn't the first show at Greer Theatre that has featured a white cast and mostly white crew using problematic language about race. Who's Holiday by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust compared the Grinch to a Black man and featured a white actress making jokes about the size of Black men's genitalia. Pittsburgh Cultural Trust emailed me the script and said it wasn't so bad and maybe I misunderstood. Read the script and it was as bad as I heard. I am seeing the pattern of major theatre companies in Pittsburgh echoing the racism of the city and the nation, I expected better. I guess I should expect to experience racism and/or racially insensitive dialogue on stage in Pittsburgh from companies with predominately white leadership. Time to find some new theatre companies! read more

First, we love the Greer as a setting for shows, are longtime regular attenders and have no issues with any performance we've ever seen there. This review is focused on the service aspects, which are less than optimal. We attended on a Thursday night when we saw an excellent 1-man play of Die Hard. The entertainment was highly enjoyable, but the food and table service were frustrating. We came an hour early with a plan to enjoy dinner before the show. They don't have anyone who will wait on you - they force you to use their QR code at the table to order. Most of their dinner options were marked as "out of stock", so we were corralled into ordering a burger or a pasta dish. Those items were very good, but we didn't like the railroading aspect. Post-delivery service was limited, to even get extra mayo - the food deliverer dumped and ran in a flash. Trying to talk to the nice elderly ushers was fruitless with no satisfaction involved. When we had questions about the food, ours even amicably acknowledged that we ''couldn't talk to'' the waitresses. Worst of all - the invoicing included an un-changeable 20% tip! So if you ordered a 2nd drink, 20% was also added on top of that. (To have some sense of control, I went to the outside bar to get our 2nd drinks - and did tip, but not 20%). The frustration factor of how the food service is run and charged for inserted unnecessary challenges into the otherwise pleasant mood for the evening. read more

Lovely service and event series. The parking garage elevator lets you out in the LOBBY of the theater. This was such a great surprise!! Too many times I've paid far too much to park blocks away when I could've taken the bus and walked less distance in my heels. The artist series brings in big names and the theatre is medium-sized for a cabaret. We were in the far back and still enjoyed the stage and sound. There are student discount tickets if you are associated with Pitt or CMU! The ordering is straightforward. You order on your phone, which takes away the awkwardness of interrupting the show to flag down a server and whispering your order. read more

The shows that we have gone to have all been great but the part I like is that you can see and hear the actors regardless of where you are in the theater - unlike the other big ones around where you struggle if you are seating top tier. Tonight we saw The Book if Merman and was that good! The time fllew too - 90 min show but so worth seeing! I went to see Matthew Morrison perform, and decided to order dinner. I was in the minority in the audience, having a meal, and I'm sorry. Because the food I had there was fan-freakin'-tastic! I ordered the salmon, which was seasoned beautifully. I don't even remember what the starch was, but it was delivered in finger - long strips, lightly deep fried, which made it visually appealing underneath the fillet. I would have appreciated five spears of asparagus rather than just the three, but it still didn't take away from the appeal of the entire dish. What I was blown away by was the Apple bread pudding. Something so humble, raised up to glorious heights. It was light on the inside (I think they used brioche bread). It was not too sweet, just comfortingly sweet, and was topped with a dense stabilized whipped cream that could have been a dessert on its own, but added just the perfect richness to each bite. I had a very nice dry Riesling that complemented each part of the meal. Oh, and the entertainment was very nice, too! read more

The renovated theater space is a huge improvement over the old black box. The food and service are quite lacking. We have tried eating there a few times this season and have been disappointed each time. Burgers are greatly over-seasoned. They are billed as a large plate item but arrive on a small plate overflowing with fries. It's very messy, and no one wants their food spilling over onto the table. Service is dreadfully slow in the lounge, a bit faster in the dining room. It took 15 minutes for a supervisor to flag down a server. A member of our party arrived later and had to also find an usher to ask a supervisor to send a server. The supervisor took the order but never put it in. The server returned with the first drink orders, which took about 10 minutes after the 3rd member spoke to the supervisor. She again took the order for that person. The first drinks were a beer & a vodka martini with a lemon twist. It tasted like a dirty martini. The next drink was a vodka martini with lime. It came with olives. The server said she would bring limes, but the martini should have been made fresh, as olives had already infused the vodka. The same probably occurred with the twist - the bartender had garnished with olives, recognized the error & replaced them with a lemon peel. The martini was already tainted. The food for the 3rd person never arrived, despite the server saying it would be up next when she finally brought the first couple's food. A prior experience was eerily similar with a new server. We chalked that up to her inexperience. There are few appetizing choices on the menu, the bar and servers don't get orders correct, and service is exceedingly slow with no apologies. read more

I LOVED the divey feel of the OLD Greer Cabaret Theater. Being able to have a snack and a drink while watching the show made it even better. That is why I kept wanting to go back. The small intimate setting was much more enjoyable than at the Benedum too. I don't care about the fancy lounge lighting or the curved booth seating. I'm going there for the performance. If I wanted frou-frou I would go to the Benedum with all of its gold leaf and chandeliers. And now with 50 less seats, it's going to be tough to get seats unless you remember to buy them 6 months ahead of time when the season is first announced. I guess I won't be driving into downtown to see as many shows in the future now. :( And what's up with the menu? Is it upscale - lamb and brie dishes? This is a review of the newly opened Lounge at the Greer on a Live Jazz Tuesday. TLDR: Come for the jazz and drinks, skip the food. The night's performers were Dwayne Johnson and his crew, and they were excellent. The service was also excellent. However, the quality of the food is lacking. I ordered the "Wild Mushroom Fettuccine", which I was told had a white sauce. When it was served, there was no sauce, and the portion size was lacking for the price of the dish. The flavor of fettuccine and the mushroom was overpowered by sour lemon and was hard to finish. Good jazz and drinks, but go elsewhere for dinner. read more

This review is limited in scope to an overlooked part of the entertainment offered at this venue. In addition to seasonal performances held throughout the week, the Greer Cabaret theater hosts a Monday night supper club with name entertainment giving a concert along with some stories about their songs mixed in. There are only 5 different concerts held throughout the fall through mid spring in their season. There are two shows with one starting at 7:00 and the other at 9:30. Since this theater is small it gives you a more intimate setting with someone on the piano accompanying the performer. There is no intermission during the show. Subscriptions are available on line or by calling Theater Square box office. Individual shows also go on sale closer to the time but they have greater availability for the 9:30 performance. The Cabaret has other concerts, talks, and dance throughout the remainder of the year. Those are not part of the season offerings. Those shows can be found on their website www.trustarts.org. Among the celebrities I have seen here are Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp, Eva Nobelzada, the Cooper family, Lea Salonga, Lucie Arnaz, and Kelli O'Hara. Once a year they hold what they call "Jim Caruso's cast party" where everyone can get in on the fun. Dinner service is provided by Meat and Potatoes and the backstage bar is in front if you arrive early and wish to get a few drinks. The main floor has table seating while along the sides are high top rounds. In the back of the theater are 3 rows of traditional theater style seating. All of which have waiters to attend to your needs as well as programs featuring the celebrity. After the show some of these celebrities have a "meet and greet" where you can get their autograph and pose for a quick photo with them. Sometimes they will sell cds they have made. The concept is modeled after New York's Feinstein's 54 below where you can enjoy a relaxing evening of song and comedy following a meal or if you prefer drinks served table-side. Checks are normally given following the show so as not to disturb the performance. This type of supper club is rare these days and our city is fortunate to have one of them. They have a great line up for the coming season including Mandy Gonzalez from "Hamilton" in NYC. During the rest of the week they will have small theater productions with both table service for food and drink. The next one I'm planning on seeing is "Spamilton" later this summer. Came here mid-week for Spamilton and sat front left and felt like we were almost right on the stage. Feels like a very intimate setting and service was prompt and respectful. I love the theater!! Seriously. What else could be as fun as a night out on the town and seeing a show!? Chris and I went to see The Toxic Avenger. Synopsis:The Toxic Avenger is a charming love story and laugh-out-loud musical that has it all: an unlikely hero, his beautiful girlfriend, a corrupt New Jersey mayor and two guys who play... well, everyone else ... bullies, mobsters, old ladies and stiletto-wearing back up singers. The two guys who play everything else were my favorite part of the whole play. I mean, the play was good, funny, with fun characters. But those two and each character they played just got better and better. Whenever they came on the stage it was a guaranteed laugh for me. I also loved the mother/nun/mayor. She made me laugh so much. And her voice and acting was really, really great. The play was fun to go to and what is not to love when you can order food and drinks while watching a play! One of the people who took part in writing this play also wrote, "I love you, your perfect, now change" a play that I adore. This play while good, was not on the same caliber as that other one. Would I see it again, probably not, but will I go to the CLO again, for sure! read more

Tonight was the second time that I have been to the Cabaret at Theater Square, and I had a lot of fun! The theater is quite small which gives the show a nice , intimate feel which I enjoy :). The first time I went it was for a comedy show/ drag show/ burlesque show (I know, awesome right?) My friends and I stood for the show and were able to see everything quite well from the side of the theater. Tonight, my family and I saw Dixie's Tupperware Party. We were a party of 7 and had to sit at two separate tables, since the tables only seat 4. We were told that we could not move the tables together because it would be a fire hazard... A little inconvenient but it wasn't a big deal. We arrived an hour before the show to have dinner. My mom and aunt ordered long islands and I ordered a peach Martini to start. My mom and aunt loved their first round of long islands and I enjoyed my martini- it wasn't too strong tasting which I liked. For an appetizer, my mom and I split the spinach artichoke dip. It was delicious! Nothing too out of the ordinary, but very good. I ordered a veggie quesadilla as my meal. I was expecting it to be a little bigger but it ended up being the perfect size. Portabella mushrooms, artichokes, peppers, onions and cheese- yum! What is slightly a pain is that when the show starts, your server disappears. I understand why- they don't want to bother you while the show is going on. But if you want another drink that can be rather inconvenient. Overall, really cute intimate theater. It's also right next to meat and potatoes- so that's a really big bonus! I would recommend going to meat and potatoes for dinner over this place though- better food for the same amount of money! read more

If you're looking for good laughs and something that is not your typical musical you need to go see The Toxic Avenger Monster Musical Comedy at the CLO Cabaret. It's a bout a nerd who turns into a New Jersey Super Hero! New Jersey? Yea New Jersey! My wife and I got complimentary tickets for the show through Yelp and this was our third time watching a show here. First of all if you have never been to a show at the CLO you need to try it out. The set up is not your typical theater seating. You are sitting at tables all around the floor area. It's almost like a bigger Improv layout. You can order food and drinks from a waiter or you can just get it from the bar in the back. If you're not into musicals and plays you can still like a show like Toxic Avenger. The actors are funny, they sing really good, and it's edgy! You won't be bored at all. If you like musicals but your husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend doesn't they would probably like this still. Drag them out to this show and they won't be disappointed! I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing my parents to a show like this but this was perfect for my wife and I! The show is about two hours long with a brief intermission about three quarters through the show. If you didn't see the movie before that's ok because I didn't and my wife did. I thought the actors did a great job. It was a small cast and they played a lot of different parts. You could see how talented they really are. This show will be here until December 18th so make sure you set a date to see Toxic Avenger! Even if it's based out of Jersey! read more

Really nice dinner/brunch theater. If you plan on eating try and get to the venue at least 1 hour early for really great table service. The food is a limited menu with cocktails, wine and beer. I had the crab cakes with home made chips which were delicious. The service was wonderful and the entire experience was delightful. Pittsburgh needs more venues like this. As far as seats go, here is my opinion of the best seats. Obviously all the the front row table seating is the best by far, also the 1st and 2nd tables on the left and right wall are just as good. As you get further back on the floor well.... just OK however; in the back, the seating is in rows like sitting at a diner counter, the 1st row there has a pretty good view because it is a few steps up. I absolutely LOVE coming to shows here! It is a true cabaret theater where you are seated at tables rather than chairs in rows. It is a small, intimate theater setting where you can wine and dine before the show. They have a nice variety of apps and entrees, so there is something for everyone. Burgers, pasta, sandwiches, etc. The food is average-- some people say its a little pricey, but honestly the prices are exactly what you should expect in a dinner theater setting. I am usually more excited to go and see the show! The last time we went, our server was Rachel, who was friendly, attentive and took very good care of us. A few of my favorites I've seen here include Toxic Avenger, First Date, Judge Jackie Justice and Murder for Two. My friend and I enjoy catching shows here a handful of times a year. Often, we'll go for the short, fun cabaret/musical performances. The venue is spacious enough to fit a lot of people, but still small enough for the show to be pretty close and intimate. No seat is too far to see the performer's face, and sometimes the stage is set up so they can move around in the crowd! The table service is friendly, but several times our order has gotten delayed, and depending on how close to the beginning of the show we are, they won't be able to fulfill the order on time :( Otherwise, a great spot for a date night, group outing, or catching a great show solo! read more

Such a nice venue! I love the casual feel here along with the ability to drink and eat during the show. A perfect date night if you ask me! I've been here on several occasions and each time better than the last. I've been lucky to have great seats and would imagine that if you're stuck in a rear-facing seat (since the tables are round), you may have to turn the seat around to face the front or turn your neck, which might not exactly be comfortable or ideal. But if you're ok with turning your seat, no seat is a bad seat. The box office might be a bit tricky to find as it has it's own entrance from the outside and it's almost separate from the theater. To the right of the entrance to the theater (the theater shares the same entrance as Meat and Potatoes), that's where the box office is in its separate space. Seeing The Toxic Avenger here was my first time in the theater space, and I was so impressed! I love how close and intimate everything is. There's a feeling of immersion that keeps me entertained. I'm not the best at paying attention and sitting still, but this theater set-up makes everything is engaging that I couldn't help but be fully present - and that is what the actors and everyone else deserves from an audience. I really appreciate that food and drink are available. Servers were courteous and quick, and there's little room to make small talk, which I prefer. My only complaint is that I feel there could be better food options for those with dietary restrictions. I understand I am a minority when it comes to that sort of thing, but as more businesses step up their game for healthier choices and accommodations, I am usually surprised when there are too-few of those options. Either way, I did enjoy my food! I look forward to seeing more local performances here. Tonight we had the opportunity to enjoy the CLO's Toxic Avenger at the Cabaret at Theater Square. What a great show it was! The five main cast members were fabulous! They continually changed costumes and character roles throughout this fast paced performance. Evan Ruggerio (who we enjoyed as the pied piper in Shrek the Musical) was the main character in this show. It was amazing how well he was able to maneuver the stage and steps with his prosthetic leg! The music (performed live by three musicians) was excellent. The singing was great and the jokes were extremely funny. It was such an enjoyable evening! The theater itself is small and comfortable. Guests sit at small round tables, some at floor level and some elevated. For this performance, the stage wrapped around the sides of the theater. It's easy to see from wherever you are seated. Food and beverage service is available at all of the tables. The acoustics are great. I look forward to attending future events at the Cabaret at Theater Square! read more

Fabulous shows every time! Saw last night's showing of Murder for Two - it was so clever, funny and diverse - hard to believe that it was only two actors, though two very multi-talented ones! Totally beats a movie, and the ability to nibble and sip make it superior to a theatre performance. Drink (dirty martini) was delicious; date had bottle beer. Best to order two, because there's no service during the show (and you wouldn't want there to be). Ambiance is a little lacking - just round tables in a room and a few "pews" on risers in the back, but once the lights go down and show is on, who cares? Servers were ready with the checks a soon as the lights came up, and I didn't notice anyone having any issues. Restrooms need more TLC - shared with Meat and Potatoes and there were no paper towels in ladies! read more

Last night I went to see "39 Steps". The show was starting at 7:30pm. We got there at 7pm to get drinks and dessert. I ordered Chocolate Turtle Mousse Pie. When they brought it out to me it was actually 2 very small pies. They were the size of a mason jar lid. The pies looked delicious. When I stated to eat the first the the crust was very hard. I almost needed at least a butter knife to cut it. This sounds very weird but the pie was more soupy than mousse and it had a very peppery taste to it. I didn't eat much of it and I didn't touch the second one at all. The theater itself is smaller, more intimate venue. The play had 4 actors. In this show the 4 actors played about 20 different characters. The actors were very good but the story was hard to follow at times. The stage props were really cool and had multiple uses. The story was infused with comedy which kept us laughing. The party scene was pretty funny with the "dancers" in the background. The service is slow. I was glad I paid for my meal with cash so I didn't have to wait to sign a credit card. One nice thing is that they have a full bar. This would be a nice Girls Night Out or date night. read more

I was not sure what to expect of Dixie's Tupperware Extravaganza. Walking in to the intimate Pittsburgh CLO Caberet Theatre and seeing the stage and live energy around the room told me I was in for a treat. Fully interactive theatre at its best, I attended with two friends while celebrating one's birthday. A frequent attendee of the arts along Penn Avenue, one friend knew most everyone and got us the coveted seats ON THE STAGE. You see, this show takes place as a Tupperware party in one's living room consisting of: two couches, coffee tables for REAL drinks, and... a large table of... TUPPERWARE. 90 minutes of nonstop fun, Dixie brought laughter to the audience through jokes about growing up and living as Tupperware salesperson in the south. I walked away with so much knowledge (there was a light feminist edge) about the history of how the "party" came about in the 1950s. Dixie had an uncanny way of building relationships with a few select audience members that kept everyone howling via her flirtation, frustrations and annoyances all in one breath. As mentioned, our seats were planted on the stage as "real-life" attendees to the Tupperware party. Such great seats had us watching Dixie's every move up until the finale which was a competitive game (no more spoilers) that saw your's truly on the winning team. #Rim Would you know, at the conclusion of the entire show, Dixie walked out to the lobby and welcomed everyone to a picture AND real life Tupperware (legit) order forms. She is making some DOUGH! To fill theatre of seats and finish the interactive experience with actual orders being placed by up-to-date catalogs was just uncanny and well, GENIUS. Dixie, you were definitely not a DRAG. Many of the local queens (and national) could take a lesson or 2 from you. This was my first time visiting the Cabaret Theater I walked pasted it a million times and I never knew what a hidden gem this place is. Fellas here's a tip you'll score major points if you take your dates here. It's a one stop shop for fun. It's a cozy theater with high and low dinner tables. That's right you can eat and get your drink on in on place. No drinking your wine outta a sippy cup here (if you know what I mean). The meals are reasonable priced I didn't dine here so I can't comment on the food. We watched the musical First Date which had me laughing from beginning to end maybe cause that's my life right now. The cast was great and they sing and dance right in the aisles so no sleeping here. Each table seats four so it maybe be a good idea to go on a double date or you'll be playing a game of diner roulette not knowing who'll you'll be dining with. I'm definitely coming back.
