Heinz Hall is a superb venue. It's absolutely gorgeous and they keep it up really nice. It's a reminder of simpler days with opulent decorations. Every year, we love coming to the holiday pops and any other special events that sound great. We have been coming since Marvin Hamlish was leading the symphony. The symphony is world class and always sounds amazing. The Mendelssohn Choir always puts on a great show too. We also love the guest singers and guest conductors. It was also nice to see the talented members of the Pittsburgh Ballet. Everyone was so talented. Santa always makes it special for the kids. The song a long is our favorite part. The concert puts us in the holiday spirit. We love seeing what who is appearing every season. It's always a fun night out. Everyone at the theater is always very friendly and helpful. read more

Had fun watching the Holiday Pop show. The symphony music was fabulous. The show was very entertaining with the conductor's personality, Santa Clause, Chanukah songs, choral group, solos. The sound quality is Super B! The pretty lights were heavenly to stare at. Thanks to Pittsburgh Radical Days, I had a free ticket admission to witness Pittsburgh Symphony performed and conducted by Moon Doh. The way they played was smooth as butter I suggested parking in Smithfield garage. It's a few minutes away from the Hall and cost for me to park $6 for couple hours. Other parkings lot are pricey $10+ during events and plus street parking usually is filled in the evening! read more

Beautiful, just beautiful! I can not believe the architecture of this building. When you step through the front doors of Heinz Hall, it's like you take a step back in time. We have been here for several shows, and all have been unreal. Recently, The Beatles Tribute (6 stars) which I can not describe how wonderful the band played, and what a great job hey did on the visual effects. Secondly. The Illusionists, Magic of the Holiday's (4 stars) which was great, but I felt a little out of touch way up on the top balcony - like others mentioned, it's difficult to see certain things from far away. Magic shows are maybe meant to see up close? Still, both were spectacular performances! There are overpriced snacks for purchase, and alcohol as well. No alcoholic drinks are permitted in the theater unless you purchase a souvenir cup. read more

Heinz Hall is a beautiful venue. I went to a combo performance of the Pittsburgh Ballet and Pittsburgh Symphony. I remember back in high school going with my mother and a famous actress that was in the musical we went to see said in an interview article that she liked performing at the Heinz Hall as she compared it to a jewel box. All the staircases reminds me of the Hogwarts Castle from Harry Potter. The outdoor terrace is a fun place to sit and relax at intermission or before the performance begins. The interior could probably use a little freshening up but it is still very nice. The acoustics are excellent. For those that like a cocktail there are plenty of bars. Pittsburgh should be very proud of this unique venue. The ceiling alone is mesmerizing. read more

We've been to the Heinz twice. Once to see Jason Mraz, and the other to see The Illusionists. I Enjoy the inside of the building. It has two levels with assigned seating. The bathrooms are very well taken care of and clean. The staff are very polite and helpful in helping you find your seating. There is a concession stand but we've never partaken due to usually having just had dinner or being on our way to dinner. Either way, I would definitely continue to purchase tickets to see my favorite artists perform or see other types of shows. read more

It's a beautiful theater with wonderful acoustics. We've seen multiple shows here and what a variety of shows performed here! We saw Sebastian Manascalco last year and for Valentine's Day this year my hubby treated me to our world class symphony orchestra with the AMAZING guest violinist Ray Chen! He plays a Stradivarius so masterfully it was amazing to watch and hear. I didn't know a violin could sound like that - he made it sing- just gorgeous! This review is in reference to "The Illusionists," which we saw last night (opening night).... First off, I must say as a season subscriber to Pittsburgh's own 'Liberty Magic,' a dedicated performance space for Magic & Illusion, I truly missed the intimate setting of seeing a show there, compared to the seemingly immense and grandiose space that is Heinz Hall. Our seats were in the top tier, and even though a camera and large video screen was used during the show, I feel like I missed being able to see what was happening on stage. Couple that with spotlights that annoyingly kept moving around, and shining into the audience, blinding us, and distracting from the show. Also, there were times when the music was so loud, people in the audience were covering their ears. As for the show itself, it was quite enjoyable, and the performers were all extremely talented. Absolutely beautiful theater located downtown, part of the Pittsburgh cultural district. Heinz hall has some nice new additions with keeping its original old charm. A few new bar areas have been added recently. Also, I had no idea Heinz hall had a restaurant. Be sure to make a reservation though if you want to catch dinner before an show. As for seating, there really are no bad seats in this theater. Stage is nicely viewable from everywhere. The workers are friendly and helpful when trying to fix your seat. Tickets are reasonable priced depending on who you are seeing. The theater is very clean & so are the bathrooms. Drinks are a bit pricy & you must purchase a cup with a lid to take your drink inside, so keep that in mind. Overall, I would recommend this theater. I lobe the atmosphere and the Pittsburgh symphony orchestra. read more

Here for The Illusionists show and so far this show is OFF THE HOOK..! Will add more later. This show is full of mind blowing magic from the opening of the curtain. During the intro, the magician appeared to appear & disappear at many sections of the stage, as if by magic (or having several body doubles ). Absolutely gorgeous theater, I felt like a princess just being here! The lobby areas are so beautiful and ornate. My favorite part was just wandering around and looking at all the unique features, like fancy sculptured drinking fountains, and dressing tables in the ladies room. The theater itself was less decorative than I expected, but views seemed to be pretty good from all areas. There aren't columns or structure supporting the balconies that impedes sight lines. They also have several bars and snack stands set up throughout the theater, so it is quick to get a drink at intermission or before the show. They also sell reusable cups for about $5, which you are allowed to take into the theater. Drinks are outrageously priced, but it supports arts and culture, so worth it. Only downside was that the gummy candy from the concession stands was stale and hard as a rock. Probably had been sitting around for years because no one likes swedish fish except me, I guess! read more

Heinz hall is a beautiful venue. The seats are comfortable and the decor is quite nice. The hall offers a Telecoil Loop for those with compatible hearing aids and cochlear implants. I made use of it while in attendance, and while it didn't work perfectly, and there was a slight delay, it was nice to have. I suspect some of those issues are related to where our seats were in reference to the loop system, but that's a guess. The venue has a touchless security system as well, that all patrons are forced to pass through which is a bit strange for those of us from out-of-state for whom such things are generally distasteful. read more

The last time I was here was in grade school for a field trip and I remember being in awe then. It is still just as beautiful. I brought my 11 year old son to see the show Illusionists. The line was around the block to get in the doors but they moved everyone in surprisingly quick! You have to walk through metal detectors and have your bag checked. They check your tickets and direct you which way to go. We were 2 floors up in row K. They are theater seats so anywhere you sit would be a good view I think. I did get a little dizzy looking down but luckily we were at the top row of the level we were on so we didn't have to walk down the steps to our seats. They had a large tv screen on the stage to see things a bit closer up. The spotlights were a bit distracting during the show but other than that it was a great show! The employees were quick and helpful. Unfortunately I did not get too many pictures or get to check out the rest of the venue because of where we ate before the show it made us get there just on time so we went straight to our seats and enjoyed the show. read more

Amazing venue on all counts. Parking: We parked in a garage across the street from Heinz Hall. Short walk and 8.00 for event parking. Such a short walk that high-heels are quite doable. Beauty: Its beauty can't be disputed. It's amazing, no doubt about it. Seating: We sat in the orchestra section, 19 rows from the stage, right in the center. No complaints at all. I had sufficient leg room (unlike the Benedum upper level seating which was the most cramped I've ever had anywhere hands down). And there were no heads in my way to see the action on stage. Performance: The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra was magnificent, as was the Mendelssohn Choir the night we attended. I'm approximating there were 75 choir members on stage along with close to 100 orchestra members. I could be wrong on the numbers but let's just say there were a significant number of people and instruments on stage. The performance and sound were superb. Refreshments: There was a bar and you are allowed to take into the theater bottled water. Yes, the cost was high at 4.00 a bottle. Coat check: There is a coat check provided for a 1.00 fee which is reasonable. Ladies' restroom: I found it to be fast-moving and having sufficient number of stalls to accommodate all of us women in line with time to spare during intermission. Plus, it was very clean. Staff: All were very polite, courteous, and efficient from the ticket takers to the ushers to some regal looking gentleman in the lobby who helped me find which door to enter for my seats and again, at the end, to deal with a lost-and-found item. He offered to take left-behind sunglasses to the lost-and-found for me. A very generous man. read more

Heinz Hall is excellent! Inside, it's ornate and beautiful in a way newer facilities can not replicate. Red velvet seats, gold-accented ceiling, etc. is everywhere you look. Acoustically, it's very good, a little resonant, and very quiet. As expected, front-of-balcony is probably your best bet for hearing music (a.k.a., "dress circle" tickets). You can see the stage well from just about every seat. The only negative I've noted is a lack of knee room for taller patrons. Not a huge deal. I think it's a treat just to spend time inside this great music hall. read more

I'm not a musical person, I've never been here before, and I was not super excited to be dragged into this. However. That's all changed. First off, Heinz Hall is BEAUTIFUL. Elegant, elaborate, stunning, wow! I'm glad we arrived to the show early because I had plenty of time to look around. Just a really classy place to be. We made our way to the bar area once we got inside. Thankfully they accept credit cards at the bar. Everything is as expensive as you'd think. A glass of wine was ~$11, for house! You cannot bring the drinks into the theater unless you buy their souvenir cup, so keep that in mind before shows and during intermission. There's a nice closed off courtyard area where we were able to stand outside while we waited for the show to begin. Beautiful day out so it was nice to be able to enjoy some fresh air. The theater itself is huge. I was worried that our seats would be too far away to get a good view of the play (Book of Mormon), but thankfully it wasn't at all. We had nice seats on the balcony level. Staff was super helpful in directing us (because we were totally lost!) and very friendly. The play was awesome, by the way. During intermission, the lines for the nearest bathrooms were SO long. An employee actually came over to direct some of us to farther away restrooms, which thankfully were significantly shorter. We didn't have much time to grab another drink during intermission, so we came back to our seats and waited for the show to start. Thankful for that employee though :) The only thing that sucked is it took a while to get home since everyone left at the same time. But, that's just what happens with these kinds of events. Every time I go to a show here, whether it's the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra or a band stopping in as part of a tour, I realize how lucky we are to have a venue like this. Beautiful architecture, surprisingly roomy seats and a great atmosphere. Let alone the wonderful acoustics. We're not only lucky to have such a beautiful venue, but the PSO plays a wonderful mix of classics, mash-ups, and new age shows to appeal to all ages. I'm personally a fan of the cinema themed shows like John Williams and Hans Zimmer. Thankfully this venue also picks up several of my favorite bands like Ben Folds and Sufjan Stevens, who otherwise may not have come to Pittsburgh. Well, not Ben, he's here all the time, but with the symphony it's a whole other level of perfection. Not to say they don't have some downfalls, there are a lot of pinch points and bottlenecks in the lobby especially as it relates to getting to the restroom or grabbing a drink. But the staff is typically very pleasant and I've never not had a good time. read more

I've seen many shows here--Book of Mormon, Beauty and the Beast, Howard Shore concert, etc. The marble columns and shiny candeliers in the atrium are beautiful. It is a well-kept, historical building and the stage and seats are nicely arranged. I don't have any complaints about the seats or acoustics but the stairs and hallways are so cramped. There is a terrible flow to the bustle of people coming in and out of the auditorium. The musty red carpet upon first viewing seemed grand but felt really stifling after a show. Location is near Point State Park and we usually take the free subway and walk here. Parking and driving directly is expensive and a hassel. Overall, a good theatre and hoping to see Hamilton soon! read more

At first glance. I noticed how nice the decor was and this is the only positive thing I have to say. Everything else about Heinz Hall, that I'm about to mention, is a handful. *I will primarily be discussing the location itself, and not go into details about the event or show because it does not reflect the hall* First of all, I was so confused and overwhelmed as to where anything was located. I attempted to seek help from five ushers who were unwilling to comply or help direct me to my seats. The ushers were less than helpful, condescending, lackluster, and rude. You'll find better customer service at a local movie theater than here... There are four(?) different levels, which none are visibly labeled for the attendees to follow. After finding the correct floor that I had to be on, I decided to head to the restroom before the show started and that was horrible decision. The restrooms had less than beautiful decor and it did not match the aesthetics of the Hall itself. Instead, it looked like a bunch of flea market items from the 70s with their gaudiness and salmon pink walls. The stalls were murky and the air felt like a steamy, gym locker room. They should offer Hazmat suits upon entering. The restrooms were complete trash like I've seen cleaner portable toilets, what a shame. The tickets were poorly labeled as well as their seats. I had trouble looking for my seats for a total of four times! Also, seats are as old as George Washington. There was no comfort at all especially if you're paying a ton of money for those seats and to sit there in discomfort for over an hour, how ridiculous! There is little to no room for spacing between the rows of chairs, you can find more room available on an overbooked airplane. The only way you're comfortable sitting in those chairs is if you're waiting for rigor mortis to kick in after coming back from their awful restrooms. Even before the actual show started, I was so outraged that I didn't even bother to venture into their bars and other food vendors. I'm pretty sure they're as clean as their restrooms and as expensive as the tickets itself. This was supposed to be an enjoyable event but it was not what I had expected. I am very disappointed that I had spent so much money for what was supposed to be a great time. I was so thoroughly repulsed by how terrible the customer service was, how confusing the seating arrangements were, and how vile those restrooms were. And it was another angry, ranting, rip-snorting, and hilarious outing for comedy's true Last Man Standing. I'd like to mention a couple of things that were left unsaid in my previous review. 1-The ushers are incredibly helpful and approachable. 2-The bathrooms are speckless and are staffed with attendants. 3-And the entirety of the building from inside to out, lobby to auditorium is gorgeously appointed with ruby-colored carpets and stunning chandeliers that glisten like benevolent starships. Once seating I love to look up at the chandeliers that form a semi-circle around the ceiling. Another gorgeous theater in the Pittsburgh Cultural District! I just love the grandiose feel of this place. Red velvet everywhere. Elaborate chandeliers. Beautiful marble staircases. It just oozes history, glamor and class! Which is funny considering I saw a rock concert here....kinda. My very first time at Heinz Hall was for the Ben Folds concert. He was touring the country and being accompanied by different symphonies. For this performance he was paired with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (the resident symphony here at Heinz Hall). It was an incredible show....his songs fit in perfectly with the huge symphony. I'm not necessarily a fan of classical music but I was blown away by the whole performance. The seating in the theater is incredibly tight, as are a lot of the older theaters around town. Just know that if you have any issues you may want to sit on an aisle. I'm a die hard orchestra (floor) seating fan so I was a little nervous to sit in the balcony for this show. I don't know if it was the type of show (compared to a Broadway or dance show where I literally want to see them sweat) but being elevated didn't bother me a bit. It actually gave me a great scope of the whole venue and performance. I'd be interested to see an actual Broadway show here (because they do share the venue with The Trust productions as well) so I'm sure if I see something come in that entices me I'll be there again! Special Note: They have a beautiful patio outside that they just remodeled. Not only is it a gorgeous building, but the performances done inside are beautiful! I came here for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performance of Beatles classics and was very impressed. From the moment I walked in, the staff treated me with complete respect, like I was a special guest, and was extremely helpful in showing me my seat. The performance itself was impressive. The orchestra was perfectly in tune and sync, creating beautiful music to all the Beatles classics. My favorite song was one played solely by the orchestra. It was powerful and put a new spin on the song. I would have liked to hear more of the orchestra. With many of the songs, the band outshined the other instruments. However, the band was also great. They had awesome vocals, a great deal of enthusiasm, and a lot of talent. I highly recommend seeing a show here. There's a lot of history and so much talent to experience. read more

As much as I'd like to award Heinz Hall 5 stars, I just can't bring myself to do it. I visited with some friends this past Sat. for CMU night at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO). This was the third time that I'd seen a PSO concert here, and every time, they've been amazing. We have a truly world-class orchestra here in PGH, so if you've never seen them perform, I'd highly recommend it. If this review were on the PSO itself, they would definitely earn 5+ stars. I don't usually do these, but I think this review calls for a pro/con format: Pros: 1.) Beautiful interior decorations: The chandeliers, columns, and domed ceilings are breathtaking. The ivory and red color combination also screams "classy," which is perfect for a symphony venue. 2.) The courtyard: If you have time during intermission or before/after the show, be sure to check out the courtyard to the right of the front entrance. Last Sat. was the first time I'd visited it, and there's a cool water fountain and some tables to sit and relax at, if you're lucky enough to snag one. 3.) The PSO: See above. Unlike the Benedum and Byham, which are owned by the PGH Cultural Trust, the PSO owns Heinz Hall, so most of what plays here are their symphonies. In fact, I've never personally viewed any other type of programming here--though I suppose it must exist to some extent. Cons: 1.) Seat pitch: I hate to say this, but expect to be cramped and uncomfortable during the show--at least, if you're sitting on the second level balcony! There is only about 2' of room between rows, which was barely enough for me to stuff my legs in--and I'm an average height woman! I assume the concert hall was designed this way to maximize seating, but they missed the mark on the comfort/capacity balance. Ladies, if there are people sitting on either side of you, I'd suggest putting your purse under your seat. Although it's out of sight, it beats having it between your feet the entire time! EDIT: Seat pitch isn't an issue on the orchestra level, though I can't speak for the first floor balcony. I recommend spending a bit more cash to sit on one of these levels and avoid having cramped legs the entire show. 2.) Bathrooms: This may just be me, but it seems that there's less capacity in the women's bathrooms than there is in the Benedum, which makes for longer lines during intermission. If you need to use them at this time, I strongly suggest sneaking out when everyone's still applauding to skip the line! Between the excellence of the PSO and the stunning beauty of the interior, I agree that the strengths of Heinz Hall far outweigh its weaknesses, but being cramped and uncomfortable during concerts detracts from the experience, sadly. I'd highly recommend paying a visit if you enjoy classical music--or if you're a visitor to town and the PSO is playing. 4.5 stars. read more

This is the home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, shortly the PSO. A lovely, simple, elegant place. Tight seating like *many* Pittsburgh performance halls. I actually somewhat like the cozy seating because it ensures all seats are relatively close to the stage unlike those of the more spacious halls of the West Coast. Heinz Hall is not as lavish or elaborate as the Benedum Center down the street, but is still a great performance hall. It is actually surprisingly simple compared to some other halls I have been to, but simplicity leads to elegance and beauty in this place. The PSO is a great symphony. With the passionate maestro Manfred Honeck, you are more than likely to enjoy outstanding classical music performances at Heinz Hall. Anne Sophie Mutter accompanied the PSO with her violin recently in an amazing performance just recently, which I enjoyed greatly (wish she had also performed solo, though...). Having a direct view of the stage from the balcony of course helped. Both balcony and orchestra seating are very good at Heinz Hall since the hall is relatively small. I would recommend avoiding the side seats though, if you have the choice, where I sat once and occasionally did not hear the speaker very well -- this might also be due to my deteriorating hearing (regardless, avoid the side seats! ;) Heinz Hall is also home to many other shows and concerts beyond the PSO's. Heinz Hall is beautiful when you walk in, especially during Christmas time! My friend and I came for a show called "Magic of the Holidays-the Illusionists" during December. We had comp yelp tickets which was a plus! Even though the line to get in was insanely long, it moved very very quick! If you do purchase a drink inside, prepare yourself to pay an arm and a leg. For two small glasses of wine it was around $25! Other than that any seat in the place has a nice view of the stage and it was nice that during the show they had a large screen for you to see as well! We enjoyed many parts of the show and thought some tricks were better than others. We enjoyed the humor of the show the most, but think some of the magic tricks could have been a bit more impressive. We would see another show at Heinz Hall again. Staff is very polite and friendly! read more
