The Blue Hole, as modest as it is, should still be a bucket list item for San Antonio dwellers…read more Along with other springs in the Headwaters area, it's the source of the San Antonio river, which has shaped our city and its culture for ages. Logistics. Best times to go are evenings and weekends when it's easier to find parking on the campus of the University of the Incarnate Word. Suggestions: park near the Natatorium and cross the river on a footbridge. Or, park near the Student Engagement Center. The path to the Blue Hole takes you past a sand volleyball court. Turn left into a wooded area, and you'll see a low stone wall encircling the spring. Sometimes the spring is dry, and sometimes it is flowing freely. Before you visit, check water level of the Edwards Aquifer. When these pictures were taken, the J-17 well was at 672' and rising. When the spring is flowing, the water surges up through cracks in the limestone and spills out into the muddy, leafy riverbed. Small fish dart around in the water. The spring is a small and humble place compared to the river as it goes through the artsy Museum Reach, the famous Riverwalk, the naturalistic Mission Reach, and beyond. Nevertheless, the Blue Hole has a sacred feeling. There is a bench nearby inscribed with the dictum, "Be still and know."

Today was the first time in 11 years I've visited it and I was lucky enough to see it teaming with water and tiny little fish nipping at things. Thanks to all the recent rain, the headwaters seem to have awoken and the natural spring began to flow. It looks different from the water in the river in the middle of the campus, looking clearer, cooler, and more inviting to stick your feet in (please don't). In fact, when I graduated, my dad filled an empty plastic water bottle from the spring and to this day it sits on a shelf in their living room. The water is crystal clear and looks drinkable. (again, please don't) The area is kept relatively clean with little to no litter surrounding the wall of the spring or immediate areas of the headwaters. A bench nearby is inscribed with "Be still and know," which wasn't there 11 years ago, but is still a nice touch to sit, ponder, meditate, and reflect. One of the more secluded spots, the sand volleyball court is probably the closest thing you'll catch a glimpse of. It's not too far within the woods where it's scary, but just far enough from the hustle and bustle of campus life.

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - JFK…read more One of the last things that JFK ever did was visit Alamo Heights. He came to San Antonio with his car the day before he went on to Dallas that fateful day in November '63. The moment was immortalized in this big brass plaque. It's really cool how they engraved the brass with a photograph of the President driving by Cambridge Elementary on Broadway, and all the smiling kids. So the Alamo Heights High School class of 1971 got together and raised some money for this memorial to that moment. They juxtapose the range of emotions for Alamo Heights in those twenty-four hours, from pride, excitement, and hopefulness, to grief the following day. It's a cool idea for a monument! The kids pictured waving at the president are a lot of the class of '71 who paid for the monument, I believe. I'm not really quite sure what's going on with the Legos on sticks in a bucket are, but it's artistic.

The day before, JFK, Jackie, and the Connallys spent an idyllic day in San Antonio, including a drive down Broadway past Cambridge Elementary in Alamo Heights. This monument, dedicated in 2019, captures that moment. Take a moment to pause on the sidewalk and look at the images of children, some of whom felt like the President was smiling and waving just at them in particular.

I just happened to see something come through my newsfeed over Fb, I bookmarked it, found my schedule open, so headed east to check it out. Emma likes to play in her room... and who doesn't like to play with little spirits?! I didn't know the history of the Magnolia Hotel so was totally clueless walking in the door... Magnolia Hotel has been on Ghost Adventures on Travel Channel. Also, Magnolia Hotel is ~not~ a hotel, it is now a personal residence. To my delight, I was able to hear stories of the old hotel, tales of it's past residents many of which have never left, and how Magnolia Hotel was discovered by the owners. Jim & Erin saved the Magnolia from being demolished... they single handedly have saved a part of Seguin history!... and some haunted history at that! I spent about two hours just hanging out, looking around, and people watching... talked to some interesting people, listening to questions and answers... all very interesting. Did I have an experience? I had something creepy go up the back of my left neck and skull as I was talking to a ghost hunter in the original dining area where the owner was sitting. I also felt some weird things around the house... but something I brushed off at first until I started listening to others talk about it... when you first come up the stairs, it feels really heavy. I originally brushed it off as I just walked up the stairs... but no, go back and you feel it... and everyone was feeling it!!! Emma was playing in her room. One of the guides said just a few minutes earlier, a little girl got scratched. Then someone told her that they saw the door knob in the pink bathroom turn back and forth. The owner, Erin, said this house is more active during the day than at night. Wow! The owners Jim & Erin host a ghost tour in their home on occasion, which books up months in advance. The tour last about 2 hours with in-depth stories which might also include a spiritual reading from the Erin at the end (but only if deceased wish to come forward). Erin has written Haunted New Braunfels, Haunted Seguin, and soon to be released Haunted Magnolia House. All proceeds go towards restoring the Magnolia Hotel. I can not wait to go on their ghost tour!

When I started doing Yelp reviews I considered what makes a restaurant go from being a 4 star to a…read more5 star. For me, my ratings jump between those two mythical ratings if the place goes from being somewhere I would recommend a local absolute stop by (4) and somewhere I would tell someone coming in from out of town that they shouldn't miss (5). Chris Madrids for me is a 5 all day long. This place has outdoor and indoor seating, it was a little hot when I went so I chose to stay inside. I was able to grab a table but I would caution against assuming you will be able to as a lot of seating is outside, and when it's midday in a San Antonio summer everyone is trying to stay inside. Outside does have some shade and stuff to help with the heat, but still it's something to be aware of. You walk in and walk up to a counter to order, the employee at the cashier was very friendly and helped my wife figure out what kind of shake she wanted. You then get a number and take your seat to wait for your food. So let's talk about that food. First we got a medium fry to share and let me attest it is plenty for two people. The fries are clearly made in house and while I would not say they were stand out, they do the trick for fries. Dip them in ketchup and enjoy between bites of burger. My wife is a huge cheese lover so she had to get the Cheddar Cheezy burger. I don't know exactly what I was expecting but when this came out dripping with ooey and gooey cheddar cheese coming off the bun I was stunned. I took one bite to try, and this is not just cheese, it's delicious cheddar cheese melted just right and covering the burger. Huge win and very tasty and juicy. I got the tostada burger which came shortly after my wife's and to be honest at this point I was a little unsettled in my surety that I had ordered correctly. I could imagine it would stand up to the Cheddar Cheezy. I was, in fact wrong as heck. This burger is what bumped this place in my mind from "great burger place in town" to "you have to bring your friends here". It's different, it's a texture adventure with the crunchy chips and the smooth beans and the meat patty once again comes to let you know he didn't hold back either. Not just a delicious burger, a delicious San Antonio coded burger that I can't imagine anywhere else. In short, Chris Madrids is swinging way above their weight class here. It's well priced, fun atmosphere and delicious food that doesn't feel like it could exist anywhere else.

Multiple seating areas inside & outside. Private room rentals for a party. I placed an order online for tostada burger to go and it was ready at counter on time. I opened the box and my jaw dropped - holy cheese!!!! I believe their website says it's 1/4 lb patty and there was probably close to 1/4 lb cheese on there! Well maybe not that much but there was a lot and it was perfectly melty. I ordered fries but didn't eat then because the burger was so delicious then I was stuffed. I went back a few days later before leaving town and enjoyed 1/2 order of bean & cheese nachos and margarita on their patio. Saw many people enjoying burgers & milkshakes. It's sooooo good. You need to go!!
