Although on this Saturday night most of the patrons and our cashier seemed to be in foul moods, especially the troglodyte in line in front of us, the food was amazing. It was pleasant enough to sit outside, and it was an awesome experience. It's likely our fourth or fifth visit, but it has been a few years. It's good to know nothing has changed. Let just say that this is what a burger should be (by the way, we both got "Porky's Delight). A lot of oozing cheddar, just the right amount of veg, and a very slightly greasy burger. The drink & condiments stations, especially the one in the front dining room, really clog up, but otherwise, they have everything you need for your meal right at hand. When I started doing Yelp reviews I considered what makes a restaurant go from being a 4 star to a 5 star. For me, my ratings jump between those two mythical ratings if the place goes from being somewhere I would recommend a local absolute stop by (4) and somewhere I would tell someone coming in from out of town that they shouldn't miss (5). Chris Madrids for me is a 5 all day long. This place has outdoor and indoor seating, it was a little hot when I went so I chose to stay inside. I was able to grab a table but I would caution against assuming you will be able to as a lot of seating is outside, and when it's midday in a San Antonio summer everyone is trying to stay inside. Outside does have some shade and stuff to help with the heat, but still it's something to be aware of. You walk in and walk up to a counter to order, the employee at the cashier was very friendly and helped my wife figure out what kind of shake she wanted. You then get a number and take your seat to wait for your food. So let's talk about that food. First we got a medium fry to share and let me attest it is plenty for two people. The fries are clearly made in house and while I would not say they were stand out, they do the trick for fries. Dip them in ketchup and enjoy between bites of burger. My wife is a huge cheese lover so she had to get the Cheddar Cheezy burger. I don't know exactly what I was expecting but when this came out dripping with ooey and gooey cheddar cheese coming off the bun I was stunned. I took one bite to try, and this is not just cheese, it's delicious cheddar cheese melted just right and covering the burger. Huge win and very tasty and juicy. I got the tostada burger which came shortly after my wife's and to be honest at this point I was a little unsettled in my surety that I had ordered correctly. I could imagine it would stand up to the Cheddar Cheezy. I was, in fact wrong as heck. This burger is what bumped this place in my mind from "great burger place in town" to "you have to bring your friends here". It's different, it's a texture adventure with the crunchy chips and the smooth beans and the meat patty once again comes to let you know he didn't hold back either. Not just a delicious burger, a delicious San Antonio coded burger that I can't imagine anywhere else. In short, Chris Madrids is swinging way above their weight class here. I believe their website says it's 1/4 lb patty and there was probably close to 1/4 lb cheese on there! Well maybe not that much but there was a lot and it was perfectly melty. We eat here a couple times a month and always love it. Food is cooked fresh and quickly. I don't think they've ever made a mistake with our order...They're very efficient and have lots of food runners and table clearers and we've never had to clean off a table or go look for our food. They have 2 drink stations with all the condiments and utensils you need. They also have a separate bar area to order from. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon to sit outside...Very nice patio area. I finally tried a burger here and it was just OK. I do not see what all the hype is about. Though a freshly made burger, the patty was extremely thin. For over $10 bucks I expected a little bit more meat and honestly to be able to taste it a little bit more. I've been eating here since it was just a shack on the corner with a couple of picnic benches out front to eat at. I loved this place from the start. Over the years, I watched as Chris grew the business and it expanded to a place where hundreds could sit and enjoy the consistent quality he offered. Sadly, Chris went to Jesus a few years ago and the family sold it to a group that promised to maintain Chris' vision. They have largely done that. The burgers are 5-star classics served in a welcoming party atmosphere. My three star review is not for the food or the good service, it's for the constant price increases that make the customer feel like they are the new guy in the cellblock every time they open their wallet. I love how big their burgers are!! They are flavorful and every time I order that bacon cheddar burger, I get it 100% correct! Their service is outstanding and I lately have only gotten to go orders as pick up and it has been outstanding to know my order will be correct! The fries what really wanted and I was disappointed. We had a team lunch for work here at the peak of lunch hour on a Tuesday. The restaurant was very busy, but they kept the line moving and there was plenty of space to accommodate people inside and outside. Parking is a little more challenging as there's limited spots. I ordered the bunless 1/2 lb porky's burger with fries and it came out to about $21+tip. No drink was included, which is a bit pricey for burgers. A buzzer is given so people can come find you with the food. About 10 minutes into waiting, my food came out fresh and exactly what I ordered. The amount of cheese was underwhelming as people raved about how much cheese you get. The beef patty was okay, but felt a bit dry and overcooked. Vegetables were fresh at least. Me and my partner decided to share a large fry and I was pleasantly surprised by its size it was a true large haha. The fries were homemade which was definitely a plus.
