My friends and family all are quite impressed with my quick progress too. Each lesson includes me playing and singing what I'm working on while Spencer plays his ukulele and sings along with me. This is truly a joyful experience and precisely what I wanted from studying ukulele, though I didn't know I would get to this kind of experience so quickly. I can't quite believe I actually play and sing duets with a musical theatre actor who has been on Broadway! I am able to take the confidence and experience gained with him out into the world and connect with others by singing and playing music. Really, I think this is what I like best about Spencer's teaching -- the fact that connecting to self and others through music is the point. Spencer is the perfect teacher for me, as a late- in-life beginner with lifelong musical interest, but no previous musical training. When I started my lessons, I had a lot of fear about whether I could really learn the ukulele --and also whether I could tolerate the feelings of awkwardness that go with being a beginner. I needn't have been afraid. He really has a gift for making you feel okay about making mistakes, even as he helps you to do things the right way and to feel ambitious about what you can do. I always feel supported and validated-- never criticized or pushed. Spencer has a system, but also allows me space to explore things in my own way. I like this interplay. Maybe some people can learn ukulele from the internet, a DVD or a group class, but I find the individual attention and guidance, as well as the structure of a weekly private lesson, invaluable I thought music lessons might be tedious and while I admit that some things feel hard to do at first, I now see that just sticking with it and practicing really pays off. I find the weekly lessons motivating and helpful in making steady progress. Spencer is a very down-to-earth, trustworthy, enthusiastic and generous person, who is an absolute pleasure to know. He loves music and he shares his joy, expertise and knowledge in a way that feels very attuned to my needs and interests . I feel extremely lucky and grateful to have found Spencer as my ukulele teacher and as my guide to understanding more about singing and musical theory too!

Though I do have experience in music from taking years of voice lessons, I have never been able to stick with an instrument, nor have I been able to read music or understand music theory. This is due to my frustration I get because - let's face it - music can be incredibly overwhelming if you're just starting out. When I started taking lessons with Chris, he understood my interests and what direction I wanted to go in with my guitar journey. From the very beginning I always felt very relaxed and never embarrassed playing with Chris, and he was able to explain musicality to me in a way that I was able to understand. Every lesson, I left feeling more confident than the last, and I never leave without feeling extremely accomplished. Chris has a way of instilling his joy of guitar and love of music with his students, therefor making me excited to go home and practice (and practice...and practice...and practice). I had never played drums before our first lesson, and now, after a month of lessons, I feel very confident behind a drum set and am able to play along with several songs. Before our first lesson, John asked what type of music I was most interested in and has been catering my lessons for that style, which has also been great. The structure of the lessons is super productive -- about half of the time is spent on more technical aspects, and the other half is spent working on learning and playing beats. I end up going home with just the right amount of stuff to practice to keep me busy without getting overwhelmed. I highly recommend!

I've never played the drums before but always wanted to and was worried that starting off as an adult I'd be trudging through a lot of tedious lessons to start where I had the basics drilled into my head. But even the early lessons were fun! John definitely teaches technique but he also takes time every lesson to ask you what you like and want to learn and will show you a little bit of the basic technique from styles you like. I got to play along with my favorite Black Lips song after just a few lessons! John is also really patient and positive which is nice because I don't have a drum kit at home and would stumble a while through the beginning of the lesson. The only draw back I thought there would be before going is that the location seemed a little far out on the map, but actually its just a short walk from the Greenpoint Ave G and he has a nice studio setup for the lessons. I will definitely be going back for more lessons when I have some more time after work!!
