This place is sadly an overcrowded zoo anytime you want to go. Weekends during the year and weekdays during the summer are particularly unpleasant. Lots of families seem to come with the goal of having a place to drop their kids (understandable), and not having to watch their kids, despite significant behavior issues (understandable but less than ideal if you are trying to enjoy the club). As others have noted, the service is kind, and/but the food is decidedly subpar. This is likely why many have left, despite the initiation fee. read more

We've been bringing our kids to swim lessons at the Griffin Club for nearly a year and have genuinely enjoyed the experience (besides the food that really lacks quality and consistency). The swim instructors are wonderful and it's been a positive environment for our family. We were informed that non-members are only allowed to participate in swim lessons for a limited period (12 weeks). The fact that we were able to enjoy the club for nearly a year was an exception. We understood and respected the policy. Because we liked the club and have many friends who are members, we decided to move forward with a membership-- paying the significant initiation fee. However, after joining, we learned that some non-members we've seen in the past are now able to enroll in swim lessons by having member friends sign them up. This workaround seems to be very unfair, which makes the enforcement of the policy feel inconsistent. We've also heard ongoing concerns from members about how non-member participation in swim lessons can make scheduling more competitive. While we understand this from both sides, especially since we were recently non-members ourselves, it does highlight a broader issue around fairness and how benefits are structured. Members should always be given the priority. It's disappointing because we made a significant financial commitment based on what we were told. Greater clarity and consistency in how these policies are applied would go a long way in building trust and ensuring all members feel they are receiving the value they signed up for. read more

This review is limited to the club's food service. The kitchen NEVER gets orders right! Most recently, my "medium rare" filet was bloody in the middle, and despite an employee confirming I wanted no charred broccolini (which is blackened but half raw), my order still came with a heap of the charred vegetables. And they forgot to include the side dish that the menu lists with my husband's order. Don't they understand when members specify they don't want menu items cooked in a way that adds carcinogenic compounds, they should listen to the patrons and get orders right! read more

Dinner the other night was more than disappointing, AVOID: Tempura Vegetables (deeply battered and fried greasy and tasteless Miso Black Cod, inedible Mary's Chicken, surprisingly small half chicken that had an off smell. I have some history at this club that has been called the Ernie Kovacs Club, Standard Club, Racquet Club, Beverly Hills Country Club (although it's not in Beverly Hills and it's not a country club), and now the Griffin Club. Smack in the heart of the Cheviot Hills in west LA, when I was little my parents were members and my mom who taught ballroom dancing would go for dinners and dancing. At the pool in the kiddie part, Lloyd Bridges of Sea Hunt fame showed me how to swim. I have been a guest playing tennis off and on and my doctor has been a member for all eternity. He invited me for dinner on the patio overlooking the tennis courts exclaiming how good the food was and the Covid protocols. Reluctantly I said yes (who is going to pass up an offer like that). Our temperature was taken and we went right out onto a huge patio with heat warmers spaced properly apart. The menu was on an app and I ordered the salmon. The view was great, table distancing was more than sufficient and the food was beautifully prepared. The salmon was delicious as was the veggies. Nice outdoor dining with a very attentive staff. P.S. I met Lloyd Bridges 40 years later at a charity event & reminded him that he taught me how to swim. With a twinkle in his eye he touched his nose, pointed to me and said "I remember you". Got to play some pickleball on their tennis courts, it was nice. Food was just mediocre with some salad they served. Unless you are unbelievably wealthy to the point that money is no object, do not join this club as they will squeeze every dollar possible out of you. You are not a "member", you are a number in a spreadsheet. My wife joined the club less than 2 years ago with our daughter mostly to have access to the pool. We were told of a kids club, lots of events for adults and kids, on top of the other amenities. It all sounded great and we figured that if we stayed in the club for a long time the initial fee was justifiable. As we do not play tennis we had two plan options: Family Membership: $13K initial, $465 monthly fee Individual with Children: $6K initial, $350 monthly fee We opted for the cheaper plan since I wouldn't be able to go as often and I could still go to the pool 10 times per year for $30 per visit. All of the plans are now much, much more expensive. On top of your monthly fee they do tell you that you have a quarterly food minimum and if you don't meet the minimum, you will get charged for it anyway. What they don't tell you is that all the other stuff costs extra. The events, the kids club (on the rare occasion it is open), etc. You're also charged for an employee holiday gift fund, because I guess they're not making enough money to pay their employees a holiday bonus (the employees are great and deserve a bonus). Since we joined less than 2 years ago our monthly fee has already increased to $400/month. The club has recently been sold and as of 2023 we've been notified that on top of further price increases to all plans, our Individual with Children plan is being discontinued and that we will be moved to the Family Membership plan for $525 monthly. This means that in less than 2 years our plan will have gone up 50% while no new amenities or perks have been added. They offered to add me to the plan at the same $525 monthly rate but with an additional $5k fee. So our options are to pay drastically more per month for the same membership, pay an extra $5k and drastically more per month, or to leave the club and say good bye to the large initial fee we paid. They claim all of these price increases are for planned club improvements but it seems ridiculous to force members to pay more when the club just received millions in a buyout. While it wasn't what we wanted, we submitted our resignation today because management has proven that they can't be trusted to conduct business in a fair and honest way that is considerate of the members. It feels awful knowing how much we paid for the initial fee, but giving such a greedy company more money feels worse. Ultimately, the club is quite nice and the staff have been great, but the new management doesn't see the members as people, just a wallet they can extract money out of. Sadly, we had to finally throw in the towel after 6 years of membership The atmosphere feels first and foremost a business for profit, not a tennis or social club FOR members. Since getting sold and under the new management, too much has changed...Some examples: The club is often rented out for filming and events not open to members. Fees and expenses keep increasing, they've added mandatory monthly food expenses and removed free amenities like coffee, lemonade and on court ice water. They lost or fired the majority of their employees and tennis Pro's, then increased the Liveball rates (higher than the local public non private club rates) and hired "better" tennis pros to justify the increased liveball fees. Pool keeps having to get shocked or closed due to escaped diaper "contents" (an explosion of non-member small kids are now everywhere). My car got broken into in their parking lot and my purse stolen (during Covid when they banned locker use and we had to keep our valuables in the car) and they refused to let me view the parking lot camera footage "due to liability reasons" We originally joined this club, because it had a long-standing reputation of community, kindness, inclusivity, and warmth. Sadly, that is all gone now. Only join this club if you like getting nickled and dimed or if you like feeling like a number (not a member). read more

My wife and I were visiting here using ONDA, which is a membership service that gives us access to clubs and work spaces all over the world. After two and a half hours of sitting by the pool, chatting quietly together, we decided to go to the bar to order food. An employee approached us and asked if we were ONDA members. I replied yes. She then proceeded to YELL 'you need to get your clothes and leave right now!' In the middle of the dining area. The entire place stoped and stared. I politely asked what the problem was and why we were being asked to leave. The employee would not answer me and would only repeat 'get your clothes and leave.' The other guests were very concerned and a few even approached us to ask if we were ok. We still have no idea why we were thrown out. It was the most disrespected I have ever felt, I regularly patron much higher end clubs than The Griffin, and have never had an issue. If The LGBTQAI+ community is unwelcome here, then you need to have a statement on your website. read more

As a Tennis Member for little less than 4 years I have many regrets for joining and paying a 9K membership fee. Many reviews before mine should shed some light on this club. All the amenities that were once standard are no more. Coffee Service, Ball Machines and Free Live Ball clinics on the weekends are gone. This year they changed ownership and management. For the past few months, it has been virtually impossible to reserve court time as it been taken by the Club to give private lessons and group clinics. Having reserved court time in advance, I've have had my court cancelled an hour before my game, as they needed my court for a private lesson. I see new Management as all talk and no action and as a result I will take my family elsewhere. Having memberships at SCLA and Braemar CC membership has its privileges. I put my kids in this camp for a week and after the camp was over, my older daughter tells me that a counselor named coach Deja pushed / shoved her because my daughter didn't remember her name. When I found out, I was extremely upset and called the head counselor named Bryce and told him what happened. His initial response to my report of what happened was almost as infuriating as the counselor (coach Deja) who's job it is to watch my children ... assault my child by shoving her! Bryce says, "I've known coach Deja for 2 years and I know her integrity and she would never do such a thing!" To which I reply, many children get abused by people we'd never suspect of hurting or abusing them... just because you think you know her doesn't mean she'd never do such a thing!! My daughter would never make a story up like this out of thin air! He still persisted that she'd never do such a thing, and only after I threatened that I'd call the police / authorities over this manner to do a full investigation... he finally said I'll look in this matter and get back to you. I have yet to hear from them! I will never let these people be around my children ever again and I'd suggest everyone stay the hell away from these people that don't want to hear about and brush off an accusation of such wrong doing! read more

Let me just say that when the new, refurbished Griffin Club reopened a few years ago, it was a true pleasure to spend time there. Good service, talented Tennis coaches, good value and fun events. Fast forward to now, in my opinion, the Griffin Club has sadly evolved into a terrible establishment that one should try and avoid at all costs. Good food and service: It's actually terrible. Examples: There's no distinction between a "Roasted Tomato Bisque" and the tomato sauce that comes with a kids' Marinara Pasta dish. Their mussels don't seem fresh as they taste as if they just reheat already cooked mussels. And on their separate Sushi menu there's a lot of mention of 'Surimi crab'. To clarify, Surimi isn't real crab. It's simply an imitation of real crab made of starch and finely pulverized white fish that has been shaped and cured to resemble the leg meat of snow crab or Japanese spider crab. Talented Tennis coaches: They were...but not anymore. Current coaches are either drunk whilst teaching or so bad that even a Level 3/3.5 can beat them. The most talented coaches all left to other clubs instead for more money so the Griffin Club seems to replace those with cheaper and not so good talent. Good value: Not anymore. Tennis membership initiation fee used to be 10K. Now it's 18K. Also, 20% gratuity is being added to every bill as part of the total already and yet they now make a big deal out of an 'added gratuity' line item hoping members keep adding more. And if you don't spend 180 bucks per months on food & beverages (e.g. when you travel for work and spend time away from home)...well, they then charge you that amount at the end of the month anyways. Fun events: Not anymore. Members leaving and joining the club seems like a rotating door and so they have lost track of what the Griffin Club culture should be. So be prepared to get yelled at by fellow members on the tennis court - or even the staff. Conclusion and context for its downfall: To its management, it's all about money. Creating new or increase existing revenue streams whilst cutting costs (or talent). And it's all about operational rigor. Why? Because the club is up for sale! It has been for quite some time now! And that explains it all. This is all about showing profit over member satisfaction in order to get to the best cash deal they are all hoping for. They really don't care about quality or the fact that their members are unhappy...It's just a business waiting to be sold and its management to move on whilst the members are left behind. My family and I went for the Sunday Brunch and it was egg-cellent. They brought back the omelette station! I really enjoy the salad bar as the ingredients are fresh and we miss Souplantation. The two items I miss is the seafood whether it be the shrimp cocktail or salmon and the fried chicken which they did excellent. It had a sweetness to the batter coating on the chicken. Let's start with the positives. If you're an avid tennis player like I am, this is a great set of courts to get some serious practice done, as well as have casual matches with friends. The courts are kept clean with water available on all eight of them. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Three stars. It's the clubhouse and additional amenities with all the problems. Had to knock one star off for the biggest of their problems, the KIDS. Holy mackerel, there are endless kids, morning, afternoon, and night. No matter what time I go to the club, there is at least 25 to 30 very young children running around treating the pool areas, fitness gym, restaurants, hallways, lounge areas, and even some courts, like their own private sandbox. When I came for a tour to discuss membership, there was a kid's event happening and I was told "Don't worry about all the children, we're having a special event for families ." Unfortunately, they got me, I was certainly misled as this club is not a club that caters to adult lifestyle, fitness, and leisure, but for parents who needs a place for their kids to run around and tire themselves out. Second star had to come off for the food. Wow...it's really terrible. As of today, If you decide to join, you'll be obligated to spend several hundreds of dollars per quarter within their food and beverage departments. There are three places to spend this: the upstairs full restaurant and the court level quick food bar, and court level alcohol bar. It's actually a running joke among members that the food upstairs is exceptionally horrific, but we have to eat it because we are paying for it. It aims to be upscale, but it's just unseasoned and bland. Even the french fries aren't great. How do you get french fries wrong? The dining room is very nice and the serving staff is excellence. They just have nothing good to serve. The quick food at court-level is slightly better, but is very disappointing for the type of club this could be. One, there are giant fruit smoothies that are made for....drum roll please...the KIDS! Full of sugar, all you'll see is the children running around with these smoothies, rocket-fueling their next game of "sprint around the clubhouse." Two, the food has zero healthy options. Contrary to what you'd expect, this is not a fitness club. There are barely any protein smoothie options, no meaningful fitness forward meals, no pre or post workout options. There's pizza and quesadillas. In summation, it's just not a place for fitness-forward adults who'd like the exclusivity of training at a private club. You can certainly find great courts, but ultimately, Griffin caters to parents who'd like to get a workout or tennis session in without paying for a babysitter. My suggestions: 1. Fire the chef upstairs. 2. Revamp the entire grab-and-go on court level to reflect mainly healthy options with a few not-so-healthy additional options. 3. Griffin needs to designate an area that is exclusively for children and chaperoned. Kids have as much freedom as the adults. They're even allowed in the fitness gyms and the locker room. Nuts. Parents of children found outside the designated area unsupervised should be penalized and subject to membership revocation. These very simple changes can elevate this place from a playground to the exclusive club it claims to be. read more

I initially joined the club in 2000. At that time, it required 3 letters of recommendations and was a place for the fitness-oriented adults who'd like the exclusivity of training at a private club , great ambience , service and dining experience. But then club was sold and new management took over. We were promised even netter quality of service, reasonable prices for the old members and renovated facilities. It took several months to renovate the club during which I was mainly paying the dues. New management one by one fired all the old employees, brought in a bunch of new ones who all seem rather clueless and they also did not stay for a ling time. New management could care less about all the old members, and only seem to want new members with families who buy lots of drinks and let their kids run wild. Facilities: Constant parties to bring more $$$ . Difficult to navigate between the crowd. Kids are throwing food everywhere and literally jumping onto you. Not accommodated for the people with disabilities. There stairs are hazardous, To get from the ground floor to the second floor you need to get to the end of the hallway and use workers elevator . Then there is another elevator between the second and upper floor . To get there you need to go back to the middle of the hall. Ladies room No privacy . Dirty showers with a lot of hair on the floor. Kids screaming and playing inside the showers , while mothers are chatting and drinking alcohol there. Rarely when you can see a cleaning lady there. Pool I kept club membership only for swimming , but swimming can only be reserved 3 times per week. During the Covid and winter/spring/fall season it was not possible to use it because water is cold and it is a distance to get from the pool to the shower. Even for the adults only resort pool from 3:30 - 6:30 its is occupied by KSWIM for kids and for the busy professional it is not possible to get there at 4 or 5 PM . I was faced with the situation when chlorine was poured into the swimming pool or Jacuzzi while I was seating there. The family pool now filled with kids, many toddlers in swim diapers (which was not allowed previously) so it is no longer the place for adults. Dining / Food On top of the monthly fee, they started to have a quarterly food minimum and if you don't meet the minimum, you will get charged for it anyway. Recently without any announcement * they said that they did it , but I never received one they raise the price. Explanation by Director of the operation was :" The modifications in the dues and the F&B minimum were introduced as part of an annual review process the club undertakes to account for escalating labor and operational expense costs. As per our updated policy, the F&B minimum now stands at $225 per quarter for individual memberships. " If this minimum is not fulfilled within the quarter, the remainder is automatically added to the member's account. Service charges and tax do not apply to your F&B minimum. I do not have to be "encouraged by $$$$ " to use the dining room in an old club , I was there every week for the great music, ambience and food. Dining room now looks like a pub with awful tasteless music/singers and filled up with screaming kids. Food is not healthy ; menu is limited and food is tasteless. The only eatable item there were scallops. I agree with other reviewers that the " management has proven that they can't be trusted to conduct business in a fair and honest way that is considerate of the members. I hate to write a bad review, as I typically aim to express appreciation for businesses and establishments, but I had to write this one. I was a member of the Griffin Club for about two years and really enjoyed its proximity to my home. Most of the general staff seemed kind and respectful. However, my first bad experience was with the head of the fitness program. I was not aware that I wasn't allowed to train at the club with my personal trainer. Instead of kindly informing me of the rules, he raised his voice at me to the point where four other people at the gym stopped what they were doing to listen in. He was extremely loud, rude, and disrespectful. When I informed management, they didn't seem very interested, nor did they ask the fitness manager to apologize for his behavior. After a while, I cancelled my membership due to the high raise in monthly fees. I gave notice via email, as the management requested I do. Unfortunately, the club continued charging me after cancellation. After numerous attempts to locate someone to fix the problem, Ms. Lorena Blythe of membership services finally answered my call, apologized, and said it would be taken care of. In addition, she connected me to the accounting department, which was only responsive through email. Several times, I asked the accountant, Ms. Wendy Ultreras, to contact me by phone. She ignored my requests, didn't respond to any of my six phone calls, but continued to email me with no remorseful or apologetic tone. After that, every four times I called the membership service manager, Ms. Blythe, she answered once. On several occasions, I even emailed her, begging her to call me, and she never did. When I called back to ask why she hadn't responded to any of my emails or called me, she apologized and said it was because she could no longer help me with the process and I'd have to just wait (This was 3 weeks after the original request). I can't believe someone at membership services thinks it's appropriate to ignore emails and phone calls and admit to it. My refund took an entire month. I understand that banks and refunds can take a while, but I was told 3-4 business days, and it surpassed that by quite a bit! The worst part was the lack of common politeness and manners. As always, someone from the club will respond to this review extending their apologies, but this club is a classic case of getting you through the door, taking your money, and leaving you to deal with all that comes after. So to be honest I didn't really think I'd use my membership at Griffin Club all that often. But I've been going everyday. The work out facility is great and I've found some really fun classes like sculpt, yoga, Zumba, and spin. The facility is very clean and the modern renovation looks great! I never saw it before but I like the aesthetics a lot. My kids love the pool and grass yard. And I know they are adding an additional pool this winter so that adults can have their own space and kids can have a larger pool to swim in without lap lanes! All the staff have been very accommodating, friendly, and professional. So far I'm loving it here! I would defiantly recommend to all my friends! read more

The Griffin club is a clear demonstration of how you should run a club. It's first class, Friendly, accommodating, helpful and attentive staff always go above and beyond. The work you have done to transform the club in the last 2 years and you commitment to creating such a wonderful environment is also to be commended. I'm glad that those who complained left, because clearly whatever made them write negative comments about the club, is a clear reflection of who they are, and does nit represent the Griffin club I got to.. it is not how me, and or my family feel about the club. It is also completely unfair for them to write these types of unfair reviews that might make another great family decide not to join this amazing community. During a extremely tough time for humanity, to complain that you have access to a first class tennis club is a sign that you are completely disconnected from the world around you, and most likely generally unhappy in life's, and most likely have not paid much attention to the word "privileged " .. maybe some light reading, and paying attention to more than "I", might help then shift their own behavior patterns. I just received an email from Yelp that they removed my previous review because they seem to think that I have some sort of relationship with the club. Since there is no way to respond to Yelp or contact them, I'm leaving another review: This is absolutely, unequivocally NOT true and the review I had posted, which was negative, was my honest experience when I was a member at the club. Our experience there was so bad we canceled our membership last month. Yelp is clearly not honoring guests' honest experiences and/or the Griffin Club is paying to have a negative reviews removed. The Griffin Club is a classic example of how not to run a successful business. In one word, the management is inept. The clubhouse remodel looks clean and modern upon first glance, but is poorly designed and done on the "cheap." The new management, Meriwether Companies, never surveyed the existing members and staff as to what was good about the old clubhouse and what needed to be improved upon. They inefficiently designed the locker rooms. There is a massive waste of space (aisle end caps that once held towels and towel bins, sit empty). There is not enough space between locker aisles, because they got rid of the easily portable stools and replaced them with heavy benches. In the women's locker room, they built the mirrored counters with plugs below the counter, so you have to bend down and reach under the counter to plug things in. Also, there are no lights above the mirrors, so you get ready in the dark. The shower and sink fixtures are made of cheap parts that broke within the first year of use. They eliminated the locker room jacuzzi, forcing the adults to use the outdoor one with the pooping and peeing children (yes, the jacuzzi has been pooped in at least three times). They replaced the old, all glass steam room doors with one with a wood frame - the paint literally was peeling off them almost immediately after they were installed. The gym went from a place with decent equipment to a hotel-style gym. There is no on-site Fitness Director (he was fired), so gym equipment is not maintained as well as it once was and pieces go missing or are broken, and are not replaced in a timely manner. Then, there is the upper deck above the kitchen and cardio room that was obviously not redone with the rest of deck during the remodel. The deck flashing needs to be replaced, because each winter when it rains, the water leaks into the cardio room through the light fixtures. This has happened the past two years. It was so bad last year that the paint started peeling back from the moisture. Do they properly repair it by fixing the deck, checking for mold (which is definitely growing in the ceiling) and replacing the dry wall? No, they just repaint. The pool area grill has been under reconstruction for months. It was supposed to be done by early June and it is still not finished as of November! As a remedy, members are treated to disgusting food that is served from a tent. Now, they have taken away another tennis court to build an "adult" pool that I fear will somehow become another place for the kids to overrun. Potential new tennis members: Do your due diligence. This is NOT a tennis club, and certainly not for the exorbitant fees they charge tennis members. Then, there are the kids. I have children and I would be appalled if they acted like the entitled, bratty, unsupervised children that are allowed to run free around the club. Their lack of manners makes sense when you meet the parents who are usually tossing back drinks at the pool or restaurant terrace. The club is a lawsuit waiting to happen. You can find kids running on the tennis courts barefoot, hanging from gym equipment, lodged under the temporary bar deck, and in the locker room. I know male members who stopped using the locker room, because the club allows girls (6 years and under) in the locker room. Unfortunately, in our society, all it would take is one little girl to say, "he touched me" and a male member would be in a very awkward situation. The worst thing, though, is the management's attitude. For the high initiation and monthly fees, the club falls short on service. It is glaringly obvious that communication from top management to the hardworking employees is lacking. In addition, it is the "ole boys club" management where members are selectively singled out to be greeted with kindness or to be ignored. God forbid you give any kind of constructive criticism. Instead of listening to concerns, management tells members they should consider leaving the club. That is their solution? It is a shocking approach to customer service! The management displays a punitive attitude towards my fellow members who complain. It is an unpleasant environment and I am disappointed that Meriwether missed an opportunity to build something great. read more

Coming from another tennis club and being a former member before it was renamed Griffin Club, I was certainly vowed by the club. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by beautiful, kind, and attentive hostess. At first you may feel you just walked into a cool restaurant like Nobo. The decor, lighting, and background music is outstanding. They have taken this couple hundred at most ckub membership to over 600 tennis members and 1300+ social members. The workout areas and swimming pool is packed with families and tennis has been reduced to less courts, although it will remain the heart of the club. John the GM is fantastic and he has great class and passion for the club. During my tour, he must have said hello by first name to a dozen or more kids and adults. Alec the tennis pro was on court teaching every time I visited and he is a very nice. I want to visit one if their social tennis events. The pool has cabanas around it and close approximity to kids game room. They have plans to convert one tennis court to a pool. Bravo read more

I read a number of the negative reviews and had to weigh in. We joined the club 2 years before renovations started, so we experienced the old club and the transformation is a resounding success. Old club: -Struggled to get new members. -Shower and bathroom facilities disgusting and smelled like mound and mildew. -Restaurant and entire clubhouse hadn't been renovated for at least 20 years, very outdated menu that never changed. -Workout rooms with 10 year old equipment in the basement with no natural light. New renovated Griffin Club: -Vibrant -Lots of new members and yes a lot more kids, but that makes this "family club" unique. -Kids are welcome and encouraged and that is what makes for a vibrant "in demand" club, where kids of today become members of tomorrow. -Staff--all staff are attentive and professional and hard working. -Showers and bathrooms are spotless and clean and inviting to use. -New restaurant and patio design is outstanding and new food options are always changing and updating. We now eat dinners/lunches a few times a week, in the old club it was a few times a year. -Also addition of a number of buffet meals, which are a great option for families. -My one recommendation is to alternate every few weekends between buffet and sit down menu for weekend brunches and dinners. -Workout facilities lots of natural light and all new equipment. I now go 5 times a week to work out. I much prefer the fun family environment that has been created and the exceptional renovations, updated food choices, top notch staff making Griffin Club a club that new families are interested and eager to join. read more
