Good small town grocery. It is definitely the biggest grocery in Escalante, maybe the biggest in all of Garfield county, but that is not saying too much. It has most of the basics covered. The hours are a bit inconvenient: it closes at 7p.

RIP OFF. They posted $6.99 for a case of arrow head water. But when we got to the register, the cashier told us it's actually$6.99 for HALF the case of water and it's just marked that way for the cashiers. Serious??? Would recommend you be carefully enough shopping here. Update: Went back as we enjoy the outdoors. And it slipped our mind this was the grocer that ripped us off before...until I logged on to review. We usually go to small tourist towns in CA, UT, NV. Hands down this is the only grocery store that tries to so boldly and obviously rip off tourist with a straight face and no shame. Come ON. Don't tell me the price marked is for the cashier...I may look like a foreigner, but I was born and raised and served in the US. Just because it's hot out does not warrant water to be sold at double or triple the price already marked. I am sooo tempted to report this grocer to the Better Business Bureau. Gonna remind all tourist to avoid this place and just stick up at a gas station or get stuff before you reach this destination.

Affordable, clean, and extensive grocery store in a super clutch location. Seems like the place the locals go.

Awesome store with nice staff, affordable prices, and a large selection of goods especially for a remote spot!

Good grocery store for the remote area. Didn't have all the brand names, but certainly had all of the items.

Compared to the prices we've seen in Bryce and Tropic, this store is completely reasonable.

I wish the…read moreowner was more friendly so I could express my concerns without writing a review, but that's not possible. So here goes. It's a lovely store, and I want to support the effort to bring natural foods to this remote area. I'm here a lot and stop by every time...and regret it, lol. I would not eat prepared foods from here. Handwashing does not happen. I have witnessed countless cross contaminations, and it's just gross. Going from the register to the cafe section, using unwashed fingers with ultra long nails to reach into bins to grab ingredients for the smoothies, adjust her pants, grab a sticky bun with bare fingers, then back to the register to handle cash, and back to the cafe to make food again. Ack. This particular worker was friendly, albeit flighty and seemed to have had a past medical issue contributing to her disorganization and lack of attention to detail. Probably some training would be helpful, and oversight from the management. There was a younger woman restocking, but she couldn't be bothered to step in and help when it was busy, with customers wanting to check out while food and smoothies were being made. This is off putting; pack your patience. (And this hasn't changed each time I'm here!) The woman also had zero idea of ingredients, so if you have allergies, probably best to avoid. I asked if there was milk in the sandwich bread and the reply was "yes, it's veganaise on the sandwich." Ummmm. Ok. I asked if there was sour cream or any dairy in the chicken salad, and the reply was "yes, it's veganaise." Lol, ugh. (Veganaise is VEGAN, no dairy.) But I'm glad I wasn't able to order anything after watching her prepare orders for others. Best to get your sandwich fix at EscaLatte (Escalante Outfitters) or go up the road to the food trucks in Boulder.

We stayed at Austin's Chuckwagon Motel for a night while exploring Capitol Reef in one of the…read moreretro-Queen rooms above the store. This is a room that isn't advertised in 3rd party sites and has to be booked on the property website only - it's something like 50% cheaper than the rooms in the hotel. The room comes with unlimited tea, coffee, and hot chocolate from the General Store/Cafe. We were a bit confused with how it worked since other customers have to pay for drinks, but the clerk assured us we could go whenever to get drinks (which we did multiple times!) While we checked in too late in the day to eat at the deli and left too early in the morning for Chuckwagon's famous lunch boxes, we did hit it up in the morning for breakfast pastries, which according to the cashier are all baked in house (and why we were attracted to them in the first place). We were having trouble deciding between the Kouign Amann and the Chocolate Croissant, eventually deciding on the former, but the cashier tossed us the latter for free! What great service! Chocolate Croissant (Complementary, normally $6) - This is a gorgeous looking croissant, golden brown with a drizzle of sweet chocolate on top, still soft and gooey thanks to being fresh from the oven. It's baked hard, so croissant shards fly everywhere while eating. I'd say it's baked a tad too long, so while extremely flaky, the interior isn't quite as chewy as I'd like. The lamination does look quite good from what I can tell after having some difficulty slicing through with a plastic knife. As is traditional, two chocolate batons are baked inside. (5/5) Kouign Amann w/ Cream ($6) - Again, this pastry has a really hard bake, so almost the entire thing shatters easily, except for the stellar caramelized sugar layer covering the bottom. It's hardened, sticky, and sweet with a great crunch factor. The interior is actually correct for a Kouign Amann, which is really surprising for a small-town bakery. It's not laminated nearly as much as the croissant, and instead seems to be a nice enriched brioche interior, albeit not particularly airy and soft in texture due to the bake. There's a really tangy and somewhat sweet cream cheese frosting that's piped into the center. I'd actually prefer the pastry without this extra flourish, but beggars can't be choosers! (5/5) Both pastries are more of a 4.5/5 due to the bake, but the ingredients and technique (other than bake) seem to be well thought out. We were not expecting much from these baked goods given that the Chuckwagon Deli isn't exactly a specialty bakery, but in the end we were extremely surprised by the quality. I'll definitely be revisiting if I'm ever in town again.
