Coming in the Winter is quite a different story as everything is leafless and dry, so I decided to venture out into the canyon. There are so many possibilities for exploration, but limited on time, I decided on a quick loop up the Rancho Connector. It was a steady incline, but worth the views of downtown and nearby snow-capped mountains. Awesome time! If you are looking for a hike that is easily accessible and has a diverse trail system, come check it out. Also worth the mention is The National Monument to the Basque Sheepherder just past the trailhead.

I only saw a few other people on the trail the first mile, then I was on my own. There were people fishing on the river. Other than that, I was kept company by thoughts and numerous birds. I even came across a wild horse. My late March hike made for mostly dried wild flowers. I do see making the trek out to the preserve in the summer to take a peaceful dip in the river.

The trailhead is located at the Waltham Way exit off Wild Horse Canyon Drive. The hike is beautiful as it winds through some of the restored habitats. Trees, tall grass, sagebrush, rabbitbrush, deer, wild horses, butterflies, other insects, and birds have returned to the area after fixing the damage that was done in the flood control project of the 1960's. It is about 2 miles from the trailhead to the bridge that crosses to the north side of the river. There is more of the conservation area between the river and I-80. There are no facilities on site ie bathrooms or water. Parking is along a dirt road and a small pull out area.

There were several…read moretrails to follow for how small it is, plenty of benches by the river as well as along the trail. You truly forget you are surrounded by city and neighborhoods. I saw so much wildlife and even came across a deer and a beaver. If you haven't checked it out and need to relax a bit, this is the place. Can't wait to get my camera out to take some more photos and hopefully see some more birds and wildlife.

Lots of nice benches…read moretucked here and there for a quiet break...unless of course a train goes by...but I always enjoy that. On the northern most path, once the shrubs and trees leaf out, you walk thru a green tunnel. I used to bring my mom here when she used a wheelchair for mobility...paths are pretty level and hard packed, and there are a couple of observation points paved with that plastic decking...they are holding up very well! There is a mystery here tho...closing hour is listed as 4:00pm, with notices the gate will be locked and your car stuck...but we've been there later in the afternoon and the gate was open and the parking lot full... We had our dog with us, on her leash, only to see a sign as we left, that dogs are not allowed...sorry.

What a great park with views to die for!…read more This was nowhere close to being on our radar, but thanks to Truckee Meadows Trails, we attended a group hike up here. This is part of Washoe County Parks. It is North of Reno and is easy to access off Sun Valley Boulevard. It is best known as a disc golf course and the day we were there there was a large group participating in a tournament. The trails meander around the hillsides with plenty of opportunities to overlook the spectacular views south towards Reno and east towards Sun Valley. Most of the trails are easy to moderate and are all dirt. Dogs are allowed on a leash. The trails are also open to bikes. This is not ADA accessible. There is parking at the trailhead and bathrooms are available. There is not a lot of shade on the trails and there are few signs other than for the disc golf. Definitely a spot worth exploring. The park is open from 8am-5pm daily.

Sun Valley Regional Park is a nice hiking park in Sun Valley. The trails are nice but beware, you…read moremay run into some snakes out there. There are some great views of Reno and Sparks. There is a bathroom. There are two covered eating areas. I noticed a few benches/picnic tables throughout the park you can sit on. The park is mostly clean, minus some dog owners who didn't clean up after their dogs. I would recommend only coming here to hike or play disc golf. The park doesn't offer much else. There is not a playground. There is not a basketball court or tennis court. There is almost no shade at this park. The park is a great place to explore but if you're looking for playground equipment this is not the place for you. There is a parking lot to park in. Have fun out there. -Dadzone

There are three soccer/football fields at this park. All three fields are in excellent condition. There are basketball courts which are very nice. There is a nice walking path throughout the park. The path is paved. There are three playgrounds at this park. All three playgrounds have soft padding underneath them. Two of the three playgrounds are definitely geared toward toddlers. Bigger kids will likely get bored quickly when playing on them. One of the playgrounds is a playground for the bigger kids. However, this playground is very similar to several other playgrounds in the area. If there is one area where Golden Eagle Park could improve its the playgrounds. A much bigger, unique, playground would be appreciated. There are no swings at any of the playgrounds. The whole park is very clean and there are several bathrooms. The parking lot is massive and there are hundreds of parking spaces. There are several picnic tables to eat at throughout the park. Have fun out there. - Dadzone

East keystone Canyon is a great…read more It is a great trail for hiking, walking the dog, mountain biking, etc. It is easy to find and it connects to other trails like Keystone Canyon. There is plenty of sights to see and if you like wildlife watching, this might be a place for you to check out. Also, plenty of sage brush to smell too. Nothing like sage brush smell after a good rain fall. Speaking of which the next time it does rain you should definitely come by here just for that because it is therapeutic and healing. I love it. There is plenty of parking. I have never had an issue finding any parking. It can get a little crazy during spring time because of all the hikers and mountain bikers. But it has never made me think about not going because there wont be parking. There is plenty. There are no restrooms on this side of the trail. So, be aware of that. So during the summer time might not be the best time to come here because this trail is very sun exposed and doesn't have a lot of trees to provide shade, unfortunately. With that said the views here of Reno, Nevada at night is pretty awesome and beautiful because there isn't many trees here. It is a good and bad thing because it is very hot during the summer but I just keep looking at the pros haha. I would definitely recommend going spring time and fall time. Very pretty hike and easy to moderate hiking difficulty. It also depends on your health level and how far to go on the trail. I hope this helps you and thank for reading my review.

This is an interesting park. This is not wide open grassy area with a pond to feed geese, jungle…read moregyms, and swings. This is a park with walking and biking trails wih ample access to the truckee river. Typically quiet and has enough room to not have to crowd any particular arrea. This is also a quality place to see spring blooms and fall color changes in the area. There is a small parking lot that is pretty safe since there is really no other reason to be in this area unless you are using the park. As far as naming of this park, I believe it was named after Dr. Massoud Dorostkar, an anesthesiologist in Reno who donated the tract of land for use as a park. What I dont know is how to properly prononuce the Persian surname Dorostkar. is it DO-roast-car or duh-RAWST-kahr? Either way this is a great scenic hike and picture worthy site that is a short bike ride from downtown.
