I've been exploring this park lately and I can't say enough about how much I like it. It's a great open space to come explore, walk the dogs and do various types of recreation. You'll be happy to know there is also a bathroom on site. There are various hiking trails you can explore, but most of it is not shaded. The Perimeter Loop Trail was fun with scenic views of downtown and the currently snow-capped mountain range to the West. I also did the Hidden Valley Backcountry Loop. It has a 1,033 Elevation gain and approximately 3.7 miles to complete the loop. It's a bit slippery going up, but I took my time and had no issues. As you can imagine, the views and the landscape only got more beautiful. read more

Wear your hiking shoes, dress appropriately and bring water! This was a hard graded trail and yes it was. It got really step the higher we hiked up. It was also very windy in December. So happy we didn't get any rain and was able to go for a hike! We hiked for a good hour. Loved the nature and view of the city from the top. There was a lot of gravel towards the top and a few of us did slip going down hill, even with hiking shoes. Even a trail runner said he fell and slipped a few times. There's a few trails so do some research to see which trail meets your needs. Lots of parking and the bathroom is next to the tennis and pickle ball courts. Lucky I had my pickle ball set in the trunk and even got in a few games. Location was only about 15 minutes from downtown Reno, very close! I'd come back next time to hike another trail! read more

Why the heck haven't my wife and I gone here to hie and walk the dog in the past? Maybe it's because we didn't know about it until we heard the local weatherman talk about it recently. Thank you Jeff Martinez for the heads up. Whether you want a challenging hike, or an easy walk, Hidden Valley Regional Park has it all. Oh, and man does it ever have spectacular views. You can see Sparks, Reno, Mount Rose, and Slide Mountain, which was especially stunning after the incredible winter we just went through. The only minor quibble I had is the lack of garbage cans on the trails. If you're walking your dog, you will need to carry the bag around for a while until you get into one of the playground or dog park areas. Will be going back here time and time again to enjoy nature. read more

I had no clue there was so much to this park. It was also a little further away than I expected. Easy to find, you drive down a couple of main streets in the Hidden Valley neighborhood. Plenty of parking lots- one for the picnic area, one for the tennis courts, another for the playground and space for those hitting the trails. Restroom is centrally located is this area. Within the park there are several different trails- Perimeter, Inner, Back Country, Highland and Mia Vista. Each are color coded on the trail markers or labeled if you use the AllTrails app. None require climbing or extreme hiking. Most are fairly level to slight elevation changes. None have any shade, so recommend early morning or avoid July and August afternoons. All trails vary - sand, gravel and dirt. All trails are used by bicyclists, dog walkers and horse riders. So watch your step and be aware of who comes up behind you fast. The far east side has steeper inclines and starts to get into a little tree line. From here is a fabulous view of most of Reno. read more

This is a great park for winter hiking. In the summer it's hot and dry, but in the winter, when everything else is covered in snow, you can escape for a nice adventure of many lengths. Any loop that takes you all the way to the top will require 1000' of elevation gain, a great workout with a beautiful reward. I have seen coyotes out here often, along with deer, and hawks. The trail can be steep and loose at times, making coming down take longer than you would think. If you like flat walks, there is a great trail around the main park that is about 2 miles long. The dog park is busy but I think less busy since Cyan Park opened. Attempted to play tennis here once but the courts were occupied by pickleball players chairs and bags. Looks like this park is used for tournaments. There is a children's playground which I can't speak to the quality of. read more

Hidden Valley Regional Park is a good park. I should have put a 1 star so people would not come here. Just to throw people off but I guess that would not be good for my reputation as a Yelper. But I will say this place could be bad, I have hear people have had bad experiences here. People in my head have told me that this has happened. So just be aware of that because it could possibly happened, MAYBE! And bad things could happen to you here so maybe a difference park would be better. I'm just being silly. It is not a bad park. It's just hard to spread good word about a place like this when I dont want to share it Haha. Now that I have made you aware of the disclaimer. This park has plenty of room to spread out and really stretch you feet. It has a dog park, a kids play ground area, bathrooms, gazebo area for a picnic, a few hiking trails, MTB trails, horse arena, and other picnic areas. Easy to get in and out of this park. So many of the parks near the Reno/Sparks area are great, but Hidden Valley Regional Park has features that distinguish it in terms of awesomeness. First is the access to the canyon trails: great heights, wild horses, quiet trails. Second is the view of downtown Reno from the grassy area near the north entrance to the park. What a view! Third is the cleanliness of the bathrooms. Sure, there's only one bathroom building with two stalls in the women's unit, but quality over quantity. The Reno 5000 race series brought this out-of-my-way park to my attention. I came here twice before the race to check out the conditions: nicely paved roads, a two-mile perimeter trail that is wide in some places and single-track in other places, and nice, rolling hills throughout. There is a ton of parking in the park: there must have been multiple hundreds of people come race day and the farthest parking lot, on the east side of the horse arena, had many open spots. Folks with kiddos will appreciate the two playground areas--one near the north entrance and one near the south entrance--and food-consumers will appreciate the good-sized pavilion picnic area. Maps of the park abound, which is great for folks who are trying to figure out the trails. read more

I love to bring my dogs here. We go up in the hills and they run around and get their exercise. It's always clean and trails are well maintained and the other people who use it are friendly and respectful of others. It says dogs must be on leash but I've never seen anyone with their dog on a leash up in the hills. I do carry one just in case. I have only done about a quarter of the trails back there and there are many more to do. Not much shade so if you plan to go for a long hike bring plenty of water. read more

Great park with lots of trails, a dog park and a playground. We went for the playground but didn't stay long. My youngest is 2, and this park is geared toward older kids. The play structure had a couple big slides and that's about it. We will come back here when the weather cools down and we have time to explore the trails. read more

I love this park. I usually go here for the hiking trails and the dog park. The hiking trails are so good and there are such a wide variety from easy to hard. In the park you have to keep your dog on a leash but if you get in the BLM land you don't have to keep your dog on a leash. I hike up there at least once a week and there is always something different to try for hiking trails. My dog loves going here so much that she cries the whole time that I drive there. The dog park is phenomenal! There is a small dog side for under 30 lbs which is great for the little guys that don't want a rambunctious large dog to step on them. There is the large dog side which is where I take my dog. They have benches set up all over where you can sit and watch your dog play. They do provide waste bags so that you can pick up your dogs leavings. Also there is a water fountain for your dog and a spigot if you want to bring a water bowl for your dog. It is shut off in the winter so keep that in mind. This park also offers an area where you can bring horses and train them in a large corral area. There are tennis courts and two playgrounds. There is also a nice picnic area set up with horse shoe pits. read more

One of my favorite parks in Reno, though it's so much more; dog park, horse arena, tennis & volleyball courts, restrooms, & hiking trails! Great, underrated views of Reno can be had from most of the trails. On a sunny day this is easily one of the prettiest spots in the valley. Bring water, the kids, the dogs, the donkeys...I've seen it all here, seriously bring the whole fam. Good walking/hiking shoes are a must. When you're done there are plenty of tables scattered for a picnic picnic too! The restrooms are super clean (let's help keep them that way!), and there's a cute kiddie playground & dog park right there too. read more

Let me preface this review with a note: I am reviewing primarily the hiking trails behind the park. The park itself deserves 4 stars for its cleanliness, location, and upkeep. Behind the park, there are some hills that are fun to explore and get lost in. I prefer to hike behind Hidden Valley Regional Park when I'm looking for a slightly shorter work-out. One of the biggest problems I have with these hills/the hiking here is the loose gravel. On your way up, it isn't too bad. There are great views, it is easy to stop on any hill or choose to keep climbing up, and the incline is pretty moderate. However, when you make your way back down, it is hard to keep your footing. I always end up with a scrape or two from a slide I take down one hill or another. This is a good place to hike with a small group of people and it is pretty dog friendly. The paths are relatively narrow. Sometimes you run into wild horses on the trail which is always fun to see! During the summer, there isn't much shade so the hot sun can be unforgiving: pack lots of water! read more

A gem tucked away in upper Hidden Valley area.... HV Regional Park has easy & moderated trails lower level not really challenging but great for walking & talking or you can hike some difficult areas as you head up the hillside to really get your lactic acid & lungs pumping if you want that. These trails are shared with the occasional Mtn-Bike riders doing the (6.5 mi loop) above with the sometimes surprise view of wild mustangs hanging out on the hillsides of the park as you travel up the trails. Very cool sight!! During the summer I love hiking during the hours getting close to sunset; cooler temps and amazing colorful views across the Reno City skyline from the upper trails are incredible. At the entrance of the park is a nice grass field to throw a ball and frisbee around or put out a blanket and relax too. The park is relatively quite, so don't tell too many people. As well, really nice gazebo covered picnic area with bbq's and tree covered landscape. If that wasn't enough, there is tennis & volleyball court, as well a really great dog park. Ample single track trails and opportunities for hiking just minutes from downtown Reno. I would not recommend these trails on hot days because of the severe western exposure and lack of year round streams. Still, a great urban hiking system worthy of visiting for day hikes and leisurely strolls with family. Chances are good you'll see a few of Nevada's famous "wild" horses. Give them space, they are not pets and can be aggressive if hungry or scared. read more

Love the dog park. I've gotta Frenchie, and she is on the small side so we go to the small dog side. It's very clean, the people who go are super nice, the other dogs are cool, non aggressive, they have benches to sit on and really nice grass. I would recommend anyone who is looking for a NICE dog park to go here. Poop bags and garbage cans. I think there's even water bowls for the dogs. Reminds me of dog parks in California. I didn't go in the park where there's all kids and dogs and crap. I was looking for a hike And when I say hike, I don't mean a stroll around a nice paved path with steady grades which grandma can do with you. I mean getting a workout, having opportunities to see what other people don't, and occasionally wondering where any trails are, all while having some fun exploring. The valley was pretty sweet, I decided to not take the designated route and followed some trails up the wash. These trails dwindled to being burro trails instead of anything people use. So I don't suggest doing that unless you're okay with trailblazing up 50-70 degree slopes to get back on a trail. Which you shouldn't because it's not environmentally friendly (I'll explain at the end) If you followed the primary path(s) up the right of the box canyon, you'll reach the lowest ridge of the range. There's a little social trail that branches off around there. It's pretty obvious to see at the start, but it won't last and you'll be roughing it up steep inclines with no paths of any sort. Why would anyone bother doing this? Well, because the designated path takes you around the mid of the range. I wanted to trot along the ridgeline. Would the path be a moderate difficulty hike with good views? Probably. Could you get hurt being an idiot and scrambling up mountains like me? Yes. Do I suggest following my route? Absolutely not... Unless you're a geocasher ;) Once you reach the southwest-most summit I was talking about, you'll reach the first decently large cairn. There's another one that's pretty easy to spot from there. No GPS necessary, just a sense of adventure. So all this is really fun for fit adventurers who have strong ankles and a few spare liters of water and snacks in case you get lost. But what I didn't mention is how I dont fully advocate trailblazing. For the most part, if there was no trails, burro trails or footpaths already in frequent use, I would turn back and not cut through fresh ground. What most people don't know is that hiking trails have an environmentally friendly purpose. They intend to keep people consolidated to a certain area so they don't tread all over the plants and animals in the area. Disturbing the environment also makes it more susceptible to invasives popping up. So please, be safe and conscientious to where you tread, and keep adventuring. read more

Went here to meet a friend so our babies could play recently. Decent little park set in the middle of a residential section. They had a small play ground (no safety swings or things for toddlers though), some tennis courts, covered gazebo-like picnic areas and plenty of green grass. Also a plus for me were the running water fountains and the open and clean bathrooms. Near the picnic area was also a horseshoe court which is great for small get-togethers. read more

This park is simply lovely! It is located near a really nice community in Reno. It is up and away from all the busy streets, which I love. It is so nice to not hear cars constantly passing. It's quiet, except for the sounds of people and dogs enjoying the park. There's some grassy areas to enjoy a picnic or play on the grass. The park is cute; however, I wish they had swings! The area feels safe; you can stay close and watch your kids play without having to constantly worry about passing traffic or what not. The dog park is great, as well. I don't have a dog, myself, but I have been there with friends and their fur babies. They have two different parts: one for small dogs and one for big dogs. All my friends, who have dogs, love this park. It is fully fenced; you don't have to worry about an escapee pup. I like that there are little trails, you can head off on, for a walk. On top of all that, the park is beautiful! It is kept clean. There are trees and grass and, of course, are desert surroundings. There's also a ton of parking! I love this place; it is one of my favorite parks, in Reno. As long as it stays well-maintained, my family and I will continue coming back here, for years to come. read more

This is by far the best dog park in all of Reno / Sparks. I have two small dogs and the small dog area is huge. The grass, even into November, is well groomed and maintained. One of the best things about this dog park is the people. Everyone manages their dogs. Everyone picks up after their dogs. Everyone is conversational and pleasant. Rarely are there issues of any kind at this park. Well worth the extra time to drive out here. Forget the Marina and all its goose crap. Ignore Lake Virgina and it's litter box gravel and unsupervised dogs. Rancho San Rafael is ok if you stay far east aka down hill, but they irrigate that park so much it's a mud pit. Use it in the hot summer months when your dog needs to cool down. There's a couple of other parks, but there's no separation of dogs usually or it's an after thought. Stick with Link Piazzo Dog Park inside Hidden Valley Regional Park. read more
