The rink was very fun and I will always love skating but there were a few things that made the experience not merit 5 stars. We wanted to make reservations beforehand since we have trauma from Detroit's ice skating lines being INSANE. But, you have to make a reservation over a few days in advance, and don't try to call their office because they won't answer. Thankfully it wasn't busy the day we went so there was no wait, but something to keep in mind when planning your visit. Parking is tragic and that's coming from an Ann Arbor local who is constantly fighting for a spot (and her life) on State street. What we thought to be an easy parking garage turned out to charge a nightmare price of $14 for only being there a little over an hour. Not to mention, the place was a bit of a walk on unsalted and very slippery sidewalks to the park. Compared to other outdoor skating rinks, this one was quite small. The path to the rink is downhill and dangerous to walk in regular shoes, let alone your skates when you've put them on! I counted so many people who almost ate it coming to and from the rink because of the icy path. I'm aware it's an ice attraction, but no one wants to be skating before they actually get to the rink... The ice rink itself has a wall of snow all around like it's carved out of snow, which is cool, but results in snow falling on the ice and it being pretty rough to skate on. There were also a bunch of kids digging at the snow and creating snowballs and throwing it at skaters passing by. PTL I wasn't one of the ones targeted but still, a safety hazard in itself! They were given several warnings by the employees but were never taken off the ice despite being told multiple times not to. I will say that for the cons, there are a few pros. The cost of skates and skating is a combined price of $6 per person so you don't have to worry about bringing your own skates. They have plenty of cubbies to hold your shoes/belongings that are within eyesight in case you're worried about things getting stolen. (Even if it was stolen, the thief would break his back trying to run away because of how slippery it is!) There is a nice area where parents/non-skaters can sit looking over the rink. For it only being $6, the ice skating does it's job, but doesn't stand out in comparison to other outdoor rinks I've been to.

Rosa Parks Circle is a community gathering place in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. It features…read morea large open concrete area/amphitheater where people can gather for an outdoor lunch during the day, and it also acts as a stage for festivals, swing dancing, musicians, and more throughout the year. You can sometimes find food trucks parked here in the summer. In the winter months, it's transformed into a public ice skating rink. This park was designed by artist Maya Lin and is formally known as Ecliptic, which refers to the path the sun follows in the sky among the constellations over the course of a year. The park includes features that portray water in its three states: The central ice skating rink is water in its solid form, a mist fountain represents water in its vapor form, and finally, the table-like fountain represents water in its liquid form. Another unique feature of the park are the lights beneath the ice rink's surface. 166 tiny fiber-optic lights shine at night, depicting the millennial constellation of the sky over Grand Rapids on January 1, 2000, the start of the new millennium. Currently the park is under construction, with plans to refurbish the bandstand and restrooms, add a bus shelter and more shade trees, benches, drinking fountain, and additional trash receptacles. I'm excited to see the updated park and encourage anyone visiting to visit once it's completed.

Our most recent experience was on a Friday night for their family deal: $12 per person includes entry, skate rental, a slice of pizza, soda and a cookie! A banging deal! The pizza is fresh and who doesn't like a chocolate chip cookie. Our kids had a blast. Lots of tumbles but they got right back up and kept skating. Also, as it turns out, roller skating is tough! Event for adults. They also offer roller blades if that's your cup of tea. I know they also take party reservations - something we've done with neighbor friends in the past during December as sort of a fun family Christmas gathering indoors when it's cold outside. It was awesome!

Yurt life for the win!…read more Since we had a staycation this Spring break, we decided to take a small trip to Muskegon State Park and stay at the yurt for two nights located in the winter sports complex. Check-in went smoothly thanks to an email with the combination and directions. The two nights cost us $120 to book online and the yurt was rustic, (no electricity or toilet) heated by a wood burning stove. We loved the experience, but the walk is a bit long to the out house, approximately 60-100 feet away. We brought our pillows, sleeping bags and extra blankets, since Spring weather is variable near Lake Michigan. My hubby got up every couple of hours to tend to the fire. We felt warm, but never hot. Definitely felt like camping, but it was nice to have a solid structure with bunk beds and a table to play games at. Wood is provided by the park for the wood stove, but not the outdoor fire pit. They have blinds on the windows for privacy and a battery operated lantern that can be hung with different brightness settings in order to play cards or read a book. This yurt can easily sleep 4-5 people and up to 7 with the pull out cots (though it would be a bit crowded). There are a plethora of trails and it was fun to check out the ice skating trail, cross country skiing trails, and the luge (even though it was closed for the season.) It looks like they also have zip lining and a fun playground to enjoy come summer. Across the road is a campground that overlooks Lake Michigan with plenty of seating to enjoy a picture perfect sunset. We've already rented a spot across the road for the summer and may check out the zip lining opportunities then! I heard they also have several luges on wheels that might be fun to learn how to manipulate. Those courses look awfully fun!

A family member was going to this center for a…read moreschool ice skating field trip and we wanted to know if there would be a charge to use walkers in this arena because the skater who would be there is a tiny girl who doesn't have much experience on ice and we didn't want her hurt by bigger, faster and more experienced skaters. This was also a very reasonable concern because other places have charged an extra $10 for the rentals of these items! I called after 9:00 a.m. on a Wednesday which was during their business hours but could never get ANYBODY to answer the phone or even have the BASIC professional courtesy to return my voicemails! It was also so annoying that the voicemail didn't list departments like NORMAL voicemails do (Human Resources, front desk, etc) but gave employee names at different extensions. I have no clue who these people are or what their job capacity is so how would I know who to request? I left a voicemail with 3 of the staff and it is late in the afternoon the same day and not ONE of them had the decency or common courtesy to return my call. I would NEVER recommend this place that treats people so poorly and rudely.

It was the first time I've been to a roller skating rink in forever! Immediate nostalgia. The skates are still the same, the smell is still the same. I love that the DJ still does the Hokey Pokey for the kids, and does the dead bug game. It was my nephew's first time skating, and he had a lot of fun skating with his friends. Being boys, they also had a lot of fun playing the basketball game set up in the corner, and some of the other games. They were very into winning tickets to pick prizes. Definitely bring some quarters if you know you (or your kiddos) will want to play the games. I found it easy to find, and there is a very large parking lot. It would be a lot of fun to have a party here, especially with a group of kids. It was a really great time!

Concession stand was fairly priced. Parking was great, but we were here during the January 2024 snow storm, so challenging to keep lanes straight. A few issues: Locker rooms are downstairs and only accessible via stairwell. This was challenging for the boys to get through. There's an elevator labeled for those with accessibility needs only. The entrance has no automatic doors, so challenging to work through traffic there as well. Don't know if it was the weather or just the preference, but the rinks were unusually cold. Many parents opted to stand in the back. (That was probably also for social reasons) Lastly, the lobby could use more seating. I did like the seats by the glass, which gave a nice view of the ice.

I'm at Southside Ice Arena right now. It's 7am on a Sunday and we are in the middle of a squirt…read moretournament. All tournament games prior to this semi final game were at a different rink in the city. This place is FILTHY!!!! The doors were locked and 4 teams of children had to wait at the locked doors for close to a half an hour. So did their parents. We walked in and there is garbage under tables and chairs in the lobby, the rugged areas have popcorn and garbage all over them. The stands have, you guessed it, garbage everywhere.One of the sheets of ice has no paint! And there is a squirt team scheduled to play on it right now. The locker rooms are filthy and full of garbage. The other sheet of ice is tore up- it needs to be zambonied twice. And the concession stand is dark with the cage pulled down. Mind you, there are 4 teams of parents and it is 7am- where's the coffee?! The last time we were here, the rink we were scheduled to play on broke the night before and there was a thick layer of water on the ice. The rink put our kids on to play, hours after they knew it was broke. It was dangerous. The game was aborted but it never should have begun. I'd like to give zero stars! This is easily the worst run rink in the city limits.
