And Texas BBQ has infiltrated Australia, in many guises and forms in recent years. Sadly, whilst I would have visited RNR a decade ago and been delighted, these days it just doesn't cut the brisket. Whilst the ribs themselves were cooked well, and had plenty of meat, the flavour was boring, sugary BBQ. No smoke, no depth, nothing to make me eat past the first mouthful really. Plain flavours for unrefined palates. RNR is a little disjointed in this location also. The waitstaff are all trying to serve your table. So, even though you get an individual server who takes your order, every single server that passes your table from the kitchen will ask if the order they are holding is yours... Now, that's just sloppy. The meal is also off-the-charts expensive. When two peeps spend in excess of $150 to have dinner, you kinda don't expect the rookie service + bland flavour 1-2 punch combo. You expect something with some wow factor. An uppercut of intensity, or a surprising haymaker of smoke. No surprises here, just disappointment from a pretender unable to fight its way out of the wet paper bag. Whilst I enjoyed the company (5 stars!) the food and ambience left me wanting. Wanting texas. Wanting smoke. Dreaming of the Salt Lick, hand made lemonade, all you can eat platters of pork ribs, sausage and brisket for $20 and mouth-watering mesquite meat!

The steaks had great taste (we chose the prime and dry age vs the wagyu) and the sides were great. Potato purée was buttery and creamy and the broccoli I was well seasoned and perfectly al dente. Contrary to what the name may imply there was plenty of tables and seats both inside and outside. Ordered the half rack of lamb with baked potato. The portion was quite large and the lamb was very tasty. Didn't feel like the lamb was too fatty which was a good thing and the bakes potato was large and enjoyable. For a "half portion" this really felt like a full blown meal. Service was satisfactory, food didn't take too long to come out. Definitely satisfied with the meal and enjoyed it enough to come back and try something else.

They called the day of my reservation around 1pm to confirm with me that I'd still be making it but later called at 6pm saying unfortunately the lamb shoulder would not be available. Not happy Jan! On the bright side though at least I was still told before getting there. Rescheduled for the following week and with some luck the lamb shoulder was in stock! FOOD Complimentary bread and a shot glass of soup coupled with pieces of soft blue cheese. I wish that shot glass had been a bowl of soup and blue cheese. First entree was the Grilled scallops served with fresh truffle ($26.50). Extra $10 for the few shaves of truffle but so worth it! The velouté sauce accompanying the scallops was phenomenal. Second entree was the Twice baked spanner crab soufflé ($17.50). Whilst the soufflé was soft and fluffy in terms of flavour it was definitely overshadowed by the scallops. After the entrees the monster dish I'd been waiting for was served. The 36hr Marylands lamb shoulder to share ($69) is a must to try if you come to La Grillade. The lamb is so soft and tender it falls off the bone. This is quite a fatty part of the lamb which means its juicy and oh so flavoursome. Dessert was vanilla bean pannacotta with a berry coulis and pear stewed in wine with vanilla ice cream. There could have been more ice cream but really, with the amount of food we ate, any more would have been gluttonous. So I guess it was just right.
